  • 04:10 - “Daddy”, this ironic, sinister, multifaceted poem cloaked in a nursery rhyme about Plath’s relation with her deceased father (and separated husband) was written on October 12th 1962, just before her 30th birthday, the month after she had moved to London from Devon with her two young children, and four months before her suicide. BBC recording: 30th October, 1962. The poem was published posthumously in “Ariel” in 1965.
Sylvia Plath (October 27, 1932 - February 11, 1963) was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer.
Two fragments of a Sylvia Plath Interview with Peter Orr (BBC radio, 1962) are included.
George Steiner (1965) claimed that “Daddy” was “The ‘Guernica’ of modern poetry.” Yet later, in 1969, he declared that the extreme nature of Plath’s late poems left him “uneasy”.
Music: Ludwig van Beethoven (1825/27) Große Fuge, Op.133 by the Merel Quartet at Tonhalle Zürich, 3.7.2013. Mary Ellen Woodside - Julia Schröder, Violin Ylvali Zilliacus, Viola - Rafael Rosenfeld, Cello (Wikipedia.org).
In her poem "Little Fugue" (1965) Plath refers to this Beethoven composition, and in an interview (1961) Ted Hughes states that “Beethoven for instance had more influence on me than any other single artist in any medium.”
06:03 - “Gobbledygoo” is a play on the word “gobbledygook”, meaning excessive use of technical terms.

Sylvia had a beautiful voice and her speech seemed to be so safe and firm. Why do people suffer so much from depression and loneliness? Why don't you try to assume that you need help? So many problems could be avoided; so many lives would have been saved.
