Thank you, Calab!! I love it when you do these longer videos. And it also now gives you the chance to practice your terms for your test. Are you doing the CJF test? If so, I wish you nothing but good luck!! Having those letters after your name, unfortunately, DOES make a difference to some people with higher end horses. They want to know that you're certified to work with their animal for their sport. The Farrier we use is a CJF, (Certified Journeyman Farrier), because some of our clients have high-end jumping and cross-country horses. They've gone now for the winter but will be back in the spring.Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦
@caleberickson3-crossesfarrier Glad to hear that!! Wishing you tons of luck at your test!! Do you know when you'll be taking it? Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦
@caleberickson3-crossesfarrier Good luck this fall then, Caleb!! I know you will do very well!! Your friend, the Retired Paramedic and Horse Trainer in Ontario, Canada, Jenn 💖 🇨🇦
I grew up with horses and have seen a million trimmings but it's been years now since I've seen one. As soon as I saw you start trimming with the knife I could distinctly smell that hoof!
You just explained what I’ve been asking for months on the Periople of the hoof. I’ve got a 20 yr old Percheron, 18.3 and around 2100. I’ve had him four months and have lost 14lbs trying to get jugheads feet up on a stand to rasp down all the flares he gets. You get the foot up and get about 3 strokes and he’s yanking it out of your hands and we start over. His former owner showed him as a driving team and when his pair passed away, he quit using him and stuck him in a stall for a year. Standing in nasty ass muck, it has taken a toll on his hoof walls. We’re just gona have to baby him along until new hoof drops down. THE BIGUNS WILL WEAR YOU OUT!!!
People don't understand, most land animals walk on their toes, and large animals put a lot of pressure on them. Hoof maintenance is SUPER important...!
Great job Caleb. Wouldn’t it be easier and make it faster for you to clean out the sole if you used a wider hoof knife? Also, why didn’t you rasp the hoof in the front or only half way vs, the entire front and sides of the hoof like usual? I know the feathers cover it but it hasn’t been until recently that I noticed you don’t rasp it all the way top to bottom and side to side. It looks so much more beautiful when you’re finished. Just curious. What credential are you hoping to receive if you pass your test? Thanks. ❤❤❤❤
I have Percheron's. As with my own farrier, I appreciate the forethought you put into the trim to get the job done in as little time as possible due to the extreme weight on the other three weight-bearing legs. Lovely job; beautiful channel, sir.
Thanks. Good tip. You are learning such a rewarding trade. Polish your skills like those knives. I once worked on a vinyl mill. There we had to fashion, and sharpen our own knives. For slashing sheets of vinyl as it rolled off the mill. Bless you today, and tomorrow! @@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed
Howdy Caleb, from Richard in Bellingham, Washington. I have been watching your videos for some time now, as well as " The Hoof GP ". Both of you, in my estimation, are the two Kings of your professions. Greams are bovines...........yours are equines. Two outstanding professionals in your fields ( no pun intended)!
What jumbo hooves! Very interesting. I don’t know how long a Ferrier can keep in the work force with all of the muscles & weight you have to carry from the horse.
Excellent job best looking draft horse feet. What was that wide groove that went down the center of the first hoof you did, all the way to the cornet band??
Glad “Press ‘n Seal” is a miracle product! It’s amazing for application of putting lidocaine on a kid before bloodwork, or lidocaine on for allergy testing. Good stuff!
Hello Calab. Sir after you Get done working on a Horse Hoofs do you eat or drink fluids? Also would these Knives be a little better for You? (@TheHoofGP watch his knives at Work? ) thanks a new fan.
The knives @TheHoofGP uses are not really suitable for my job I have used those kind and there not quite what I like the knives I have are sharp enough to shave with lol my wife says I need to drink more water I tend to forget to eat and drink when I'm working lol
Have the utmost confidence that you will pass your certification test with flying colors. I have heard the American Mustangs and BC and Alberta Wildies have the best hoofs because, as you said they travel many, many miles over rough terrain all the time. Of course, once one of them is adopted then the owner needs to start a regular schedule of hoof maintenance. Does the diet of the horse affect the quality of its hoof material? One of the channels I watch has the horses on pasture 24/7 all Summer...so grass...but, in the winter when the pastures are frozen over the horses get haylage and pelleted supplements. They've not spoken about the hoof health...they do have a farrier that services the horses, but he's never on camera. Just wondering. Thanks for another good, good video. 🤗
What about using a cloth elastic tensor band - the sort used to gently brace a sprained knee or ankle for people who have pain or weakness in those joints - instead of the Saran plastic wrap? There’d be an initial price for the new tensor bands, but they last forever and are washable. Plastic wrap is awful for the environment.
I really enjoyed watching this... one of my daughters works on a farm in pa. and they deal only in freishans. for sale, for shows, and daughter does the breeding, semen, farm mgr at times, etc. She has only 1 horse now who stands 17h high...thanks caleb
If what you do hurts the horse number one I don’t think that hoof would just be laying there and number two I don’t think the camera would be on the tripod anymore.
Nice it the customer would tie up tails as well as feather. Even better to present cleaned feet. We always make sure that hooves are picked out and legs clean out of respect
I like the way you explain what you are doing and why and keep the terminology coming, its educational. :)

Planning on taking cf in May cjf fall or following spring

Lakota really does have massive, massive hooves!! Thank you for naming all the parts of the hoof. It's fun to learn that stuff.
I grew up with horses and have seen a million trimmings but it's been years now since I've seen one. As soon as I saw you start trimming with the knife I could distinctly smell that hoof!
Lol...me too! And I was looking for the ever present dog trying to grab the hoof trimmings!
At some point, could you please show us the whole horse?
Yes sorry I spaced it and didn't get it done this time
As usual, another great video with Lacota and full of great information! You're the best Caleb! xoxo
Glad to see the gloves!
Love the explanations as you work. Blessings to you. ❤❤❤
I wish we could see the horses. I love Clydesdales.

Fine restoration/care !
Very good, informative content !
You explain very well the process. Ty
Enjoyed video. Like that you brush the hoof at the beginning.

The horse hoof is so amazing to me, great educational videos, thank you
Nice video and commentary Caleb. Thanks. She’s a big old gal!

I had an old farrier who used to say that a horse has five hearts. The one in their chest and one in each of their feet (meaning the frogs). ♥️♥️🇨🇦

I watch you all the time! And Maupin Farrier... I wish he spoke sometimes, but I wanna see you clean Lakotas hoof as spot on as Maupin does his
Very much enjoy the commentary. Thx.
Speaking of a dull knife, that has been my curiosity. How are these specialty knives sharpened???
We Use a special grinder wheel or I use a ken onion work sharp

Very informative and interesting video. Great explanations of your work too.
Sir: your work is so fabulous!
Excellent job best looking draft horse feet.

Thank you!👍👍👍🐴🐴🐴
Respect to you and all other farriers
Really educational, very interesting to me!!
What was the groove running up the first hoof? At 4:35.
Just do what you do. Awesome job!
One HUGE improvement on your video would be to show the whole horse after the trimming!
I used to shoe!!! Often seen farriers using the hoof wall offcut, to keep the feathers out of the way!!! Like a hair band if ya like!!!!
If the horse's hoof keeps sliding off on one side, can't you move your stand in that direction so the hoof stays on the stand?
"...a TON of distortion," HA! pretty good.
I do not know anything about horses, so here goes my question does it hurt the horse when you are doing that and if not why?
so many farriers use saran wrap.
excellent hand grip

Yes diet 100% effects hoof growth and quality of the hoof capsule. It's super important
Do they have a scale for horse weight?
I like that I have a mute button so much explaining if you've seen one video you've heard it all before . add some grip tape to your stand
Good luck on your test! You should fly through it! ❤
Thank you
Good job
Your back must hurt like crazy. Just looking at that position you take for so long, it hurts.

Cool job 😎
What is Lakota's job?
Just listen good job that is all
Super
It looks like a grinch
The blood coming thru the hoof wall?
No that's solar bruising
I haven’t watched all of your vids but are you allowed to show the animals you’re working on?
Yes unfortunately I didn't get video this time I usually try to
@@caleberickson_The_Dying_Breed cool deal!
Why don't you use a full sized rubber shoes
If what you do hurts the horse number one I don’t think that hoof would just be laying there and number two I don’t think the camera would be on the tripod anymore.
2000 lbs ..1 ton horse ..wow! U holding up some weight
Instead of cling film, could you use a tail bandage? Cling film is terrible for the environment
Everything is bad for the environment these days. They are now saying people shouldn't plant their own gardens because it's bad
Nice it the customer would tie up tails as well as feather. Even better to present cleaned feet. We always make sure that hooves are picked out and legs clean out of respect
Reminds me of a coconut 🥥
U should sit down to do this bcuz u need to protect ur back. A stool would be good like what dentist use small stool.
This wouldn't work as you have to be able to move out of the way fast and move with the horse
Hi there. WOW massive hoof. Can you imagine how far you would fly if the horse decided to give a kick! You’d end up 50 feet away.😳
It isn’t the size of the hoof, but the power behind it
@@hellybelly6 that’s exactly what I said 😁
👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽💜
I think you need to learn wrapping skills
Bs: Average Clydesdale doesn't top 17 hands. Can't shake feeling this is stolen footage. The VO isn't professional. The work's okay. But the vo? Nope.
Hey Caleb! Love the vids man. Do you have a business email? Or any socials where I can shoot you a DM? Would love to talk business with you. Thanks!
