Andre never quite said if he thought the approx $10K difference between the ZR2 and the trailboss is worth it. Watching how much fun he had makes me think the answer is YES, but I'd like to hear his perspective. Having driven both now, would you buy a trailboss over a ZR2 again?
You can buy nice full suspension upgrade, skid plates, winch, lighting, etc for $10k. You will never get the the best value for your money buying it via a trim level upgrade from the manufacturer who is making a healthy profit on it. Also, 95% or more of people will NEVER use a truck off road and simply throw money away on off road trims to make themselves feel better while cruising around town and to the mall.
@@carbonking53 You still wouldn't have a truck as capable as this. The ZR2 is a factory built desert racer like the Raptor. That's one of the few cases where buying the factory truck is the better value, because building a what is essentially a entry prerunner isn't gonna be cheap.
Mid size fits in my garage next to the wifes SUV and I can still work in the garage in the winter. Nothing better than not having to clear snow and ice off your truck at 5AM before going to work.

I hope she lasts as long and is as reliable as my Tundra has been and continues to be!
@Napom's Rides oh ok, I asked cause I work at the plant and have yet to build a production version of one yet on my shift. I do know this week production has drastically ramped up and that Gm is offering OT for us which is good signs that full production is near.
Anything that describes itself as a Tacoma killer is, therefore, not a Tacoma killer because it acknowledges that Tacoma is the king, at least until we get Cybertruck which will change the truck market forever. Like Tesla said years ago - all trucks are the same. Some just have engines and transmissions that suck less than others.
Why have manufacturers not learned that piano black trim is not a good feature, especially on trucks & SUV? Other than that, plus a few features buried in the infotainment menu, this is a very cool & good-looking truck!
This is a good goddamn question. That stuff looks good for 9 seconds after the vehicle prep technician pulls off the factory coating - then, scratched and dusty for 200,000 miles. When will these dopey manufacturers figure this out?
My Chevy (Bow Tie) has a Blower. Pushes 435hp@5000 rpm weight is light. Only 10,200 lbs. I built the Dies that make the parts. Heavy Stamping. The reason I like Colorado is simple, I am allowed to see ALL the silent recalls.
Great video. Please tell us - how was the knee room? Looks tight in some video shots, and thinking about bouncy/rocky terrain, are you bashing your knees?
So for $10k more he could’ve had it all? I’m sure TFL has the pull with GM to seamlessly get Andre out of his Trailboss and into a ZR2 if he wants that 😎
This is Andre. The ZR2 has the cool Baja mode with Performance transmission shift. That’s one tiny regret. Other than that - I will stay with my Trail Boss. The Boss has a higher towing rating and a lot more payload.
@@TFLoffroad Great points Andre! forgot you have that 6000lb boat you need to tow (7700lb capacity👍). Hoping in the refresh years they offer a custom Trailboss (similar to your truck) and an LT Trailboss with more of the Z71 amenities obviously at a slightly higher price point 🤔.
@@TFLoffroad Awesome, thanks for the response. Basically mirrors my thoughts on the ZR2. Off road trims with low payload are the norm, and it makes me sad. One big advantage of the Tremor packages, as far as I'm concerned (and why I bought one).

I like these but wonder if the Pro 4X would better suit my real world needs and still get me a nice NA V6 (presumably less complex) and still has a rear locker.
Toyota Tacoma shines in very few areas. 1) unmatched reliability. 2) resale value 3) aftermarket parts 4) quality bed structure As far as power, room, mpg, price, etc etc. others may shine but they only last a few thousand miles…..
I just have a hard time seeing how the Desert Boss package costs $9k. Ordered my ZR2 about a month ago, production in about 2 weeks. So look forward to getting back into a truck again. Kudos for Chevy for debuting the ZR2 this way. Another great episode.
There’s no way that cosmetic changes are really worth $9500, you can do aftermarket upgrades that would be cheaper, better and have more options as far as looks, the manufacturer premium is rarely worth it
I recently bought a 2016 Canyon with a manual transmission and a 4 cylinder engine. It was so quiet that I couldn't hear the engine and had to constantly look at the Tach to know when to shift gears. I wanted to get a louder muffler, and the first name I thought of was Cherrybomb. I put a Cherrybomb Vortex muffler on it because the Vortex has a deep truck sound. Now, it is loud enough to hear how hard the engine is working even when listening to music. It has a little bit of drone, and I could add a resonator, but I don't mind it. It sounds like an aggressive 6 cylinder when accelerating. Cruising on the highway is not that loud. I noticed that now, with the Cherrybomb muffler, the truck accelerates faster, and the fuel economy is better. My city driving fuel economy was 10.7 liters per 100 kilometers (22 mpg) and now it gets 9.5 liters per 100 kilometers (25 mpg).
Can't wait to get my Bright Blue Metallic '23 ZR2!!! Hopefully aroung Memorial day or shortly there after. Getting so excited after watching this video!
Can anyone tell me how baby seats work in the back?! We're looking hard at this but we have two kids 1-4 y/o and i'm 6'3". not an ideal combination for mid sized trucks!!!
Well, for the first leg of his trip, he was on paved highways. And he was averaging around 14.4 miles per gallon, according to the trucks' own computer. So, not great. Those 33" tall offroad tires are not helping fuel mileage either..
Owning a 2017 zr2 myself, I actually like the fact that it's not "Hey look at me" loud. I also like the sound of the new one because it's not "Hey look at me" loud. People look because it's an awesome truck.

Wow back in 2012 I bought a brand new from the dealer, fully loaded F250 Crew Cab, 6.7 Diesel Lariat truck for $55k. It's insane that this little toy truck that can't tow jack squat costs that much. WHICH manufacturer gives us the BEST BANG for the BUCK in terms of lowest price for best off-road worthiness? Which manufacturer gives us the absolute LOWEST PRICE for decent 4x4 off-road worthy ability? Which manufacturer gives us the absolute highest-end 4x4 Baja and Snow/Mud/Sand/Ice-traveling capabilities? Which company gives us the BEST (i.e. lowest!) month payments on just the truck-itself financing package AND/OR any combined Truck and comprehensive Insurance financing packages? Which truck carries the most in the back bed and which truck can tow the most? Which has the longest driving range off-road? Which has the highest obstacle-clearing clearance? Creat and show a MASTER TABLE that shows all these variables in an easy-to-read format and let TFL find out WHO IS THE MOST WORTHY OFF-ROADER and who can make it AFFORDABLE for the average 4x4 truck-buying consumer at all price points and truck sizes? @@bahamatodd it is different. ZR2 Bison will cost an extra ~10K with many enhancements not necessary for non-extreme offroaders like us, but with just changing the tires, 1K extra will gain what we need. Selling OEM 33" tires will save a few hundred dollars further.
I love the new ZR2 but to be honest I’m concerned about the durability, longevity, and effectiveness of a turbo four cylinder engine on a 5,000 lb truck. I’ve read several reports that indicated there was significant turbo lag on the Z71 model. Any thoughts?
Never had any personal experience, but they have had this engine available in the full size GM trucks for several years now, I think they have been good.
Good video, Andre! Makes me want to do this trip.. Couple of things - not clear if front sway bars can be disconnected like Wrangler…also, is airing down automatic or just the measurement?
I believe in a previous Video Andre stated it's just the measurement, not automatic. The truck will honk once you have reached your desired tire pressure.
I think the 2023 ZR2 base for 48K is the best deal. And you can save $1,000 with Costco discount bringing it to 47K. It’s hard to beat that. It has 3” lift, it’s 3.5” wider and 430ft lbs TQ. These trucks are awesome! I’m just curious how the heck a little 2.7L 4 banger is making 310HP and 430FT TQ. That’s crazy! I hope these engines last and last. With that kind of power and tune, you’d think they be done after 100K miles for sure. But, I guess not. Anyways pretty much any 2023 Colorado is a BEAST.
Hardest part for me was picking the color 😅 I would suggest getting the additional AUX kit factory installed, it’ll be a pain to DIY later. I got every option available except the bars since I needed a hard cover. I really wished they would of given me the option for the heads up display tho.

Great video Andre, can’t wait for the all electric Vegas to Reno in these trucks!!! One of the trucks can tow the Diesel generator!!!!!!
I’ve been following your coverage of this truck since it was unveiled and this video actually made me go down to the dealership and order one. Gonna be a long wait but I’m pretty pumped
Nothing better than not having to clear snow and ice off your truck at 5AM before going to work.
i want a zr2 so bad but im gonna have to settle with the trailboss the zr2 is just a bit out of my price range :(
I like for tge first time for me... is that you finally are able to go hard real time Off-roading. You look shucked up. Real good content. This makes someone to purchase a vehicle really understand what it can do.
Looks like a great way to review these trucks - Thanks for the review on this and all the Gen 3 Colorados by you and the TFL crew!!! The Targeted Production Week on my new ZR2 should start tomorrow - Finally passing my 2002 Tundra Limited down to my son once my 2023 ZR2 arrives! I hope she lasts as long and is as reliable as my Tundra has been and continues to be!
Did it start production?
@@larrysimth9077 Not sure, My TPW went from April 24 then was pushed to May 15, now is pushed to week of May 22 . . .
@Napom's Rides oh ok, I asked cause I work at the plant and have yet to build a production version of one yet on my shift. I do know this week production has drastically ramped up and that Gm is offering OT for us which is good signs that full production is near.
@@Napomsfreedom hey i thought you would be happy to know that we just started building ZR2's today so hopefully you will get to enjoy yours soon
@@larrysimth9077 Thanks for the Intel!!! I am so stoked to get my new truck!!
Chevy has put some cool tech in their trucks!
I just ordered mine yesterday! now i have to watch videos for 2 months.
@TFLoffroad: Nice work Andre! Love this stuff. So exciting.
Thank you.
That air down screen and alert is totally awesome. 👍🏼
Great video. Please tell us - how was the knee room? Looks tight in some video shots, and thinking about bouncy/rocky terrain, are you bashing your knees?
Looks like a ton of fun. I have a 2016 Colorado Z71. The new Colorados have tempted me some.
Andre, any regrets or second thoughts about getting the Trail Boss instead of the ZR2? (aside from the cruise control)
Yeah stinks he missed taking the $900 package with Cruise Control
So for $10k more he could’ve had it all? I’m sure TFL has the pull with GM to seamlessly get Andre out of his Trailboss and into a ZR2 if he wants that 😎
This is Andre. The ZR2 has the cool Baja mode with Performance transmission shift. That’s one tiny regret. Other than that - I will stay with my Trail Boss. The Boss has a higher towing rating and a lot more payload.
@@TFLoffroad
Great points Andre! forgot you have that 6000lb boat you need to tow (7700lb capacity👍).
How did I miss this episode, come on TH-cam, TFL AINT A REGULAR SHOW YOU CAN MISS, THEY ARE DOING IMPORTANT STUFF HERE!!!
Enjoyed this video on your journey across Nevada. What an opportunity to play offroad. Especially since Andre has a new Colorado. Are you excited to try out your new truck on this course, Andre? You guys are so lucky to have these opportunities. Great job guys! These trucks look very appealing now!
440 miles! Very cool video showing the truck in a real world environment. Amazing performance. I have a 2022 and making me think twice about upgrading. Just not sure I want to part with my v6
I like these but wonder if the Pro 4X would better suit my real world needs and still get me a nice NA V6 (presumably less complex) and still has a rear locker.
Yeah, the V6 is appealing.
And the Frontier has proven reliability. GM and Colorado...not so much.
@@nismo370z4 Well when Nissan basically made the same truck since the Bush administration, one would hope they could at least make it work correctly.
I did the Carretera austral (700 Miles aprox)here in Chile, with my 2008 Colorado, I'm not surprised. However I love the look of the zr2.
Zr2 should come with 35”. I really like the looks of the truck.
The Bison looks to be coming with 35's.
Toyota Tacoma shines in very few areas.
1) unmatched reliability.
2) resale value
3) aftermarket parts
4) quality bed structure
As far as power, room, mpg, price, etc etc. others may shine but they only last a few thousand miles…..
That looked to be so much fun Andre
Great video, can't wait to see more off roading with crawling, water and mud, and Moab.
You should now take EVERY truck on this trail you test.😊
I just have a hard time seeing how the Desert Boss package costs $9k. Ordered my ZR2 about a month ago, production in about 2 weeks. So look forward to getting back into a truck again. Kudos for Chevy for debuting the ZR2 this way. Another great episode.
There’s no way that cosmetic changes are really worth $9500, you can do aftermarket upgrades that would be cheaper, better and have more options as far as looks, the manufacturer premium is rarely worth it
You mean that cheesy light bar and hideous front bumper that look like they fell off the JC Whitney catalog aren’t worth $9k?
Love this! Awesome way to show off the Colorado!
Thank you for watching!
@@TFLoffroad made me want to go west to drive in the desert!
I love that the wheels have cargo tie-downs.
GM needs to put the 3.0L Diesel in this truck
Bump!
Considering years ago people drove that road in old Chevy Impala's you did ok!!
Do more tests on this track please. I would love to see a raptor or TRX on this.
There's been so many "Tacoma Killers" over the years and yet it's still alive. So there's that.
Can't wait to get my Bright Blue Metallic '23 ZR2!!! Hopefully aroung Memorial day or shortly there after. Getting so excited after watching this video!
I want to see the comparison between this and andres trail boss
That is coming up soon.
TrailBoss not even close to a ZR2
Can anyone tell me how baby seats work in the back?! We're looking hard at this but we have two kids 1-4 y/o and i'm 6'3". not an ideal combination for mid sized trucks!!!
I'm 6' and my wife is 5' 9". We have a very tall 3 yoa and his car seat fits without issues behind my seat.
I’d love to know how well it does on the highway and mileage
Well, for the first leg of his trip, he was on paved highways. And he was averaging around 14.4 miles per gallon, according to the trucks' own computer. So, not great.
Those 33" tall offroad tires are not helping fuel mileage either..
@@Hiluxtaco I get that in my Hemi Jeep GC!
"Didn't expect to see snow" Nevada literally means snowfall in Spanish lol, great video.
Congrats GM, a nice truck!
Owning a 2017 zr2 myself, I actually like the fact that it's not "Hey look at me" loud. I also like the sound of the new one because it's not "Hey look at me" loud. People look because it's an awesome truck.
@@2011buddylee i hear you. but i'm not trying to be the top dog. my v6 is great (like your 2019). Plenty of power and basically goes anywhere. :) Actually the only thing I plan to add in the future is some sort of front camera (maybe).
I wouldn't be surprised it gm pulls the trigger on making a faster version, after all they made a Colorado SS before
Excellent video. ZR2 looks like a sweet truck. Can't wait for the new Tacoma and how it compares.
@@2011buddylee I hadn't realized they released specifics of the new Tacoma. I'd only seen a few teaser images. Where did you learn about the power output of the new motor? I'd like to read more about it. Thanks.

@@2011buddylee Fair enough, thanks. I need to make a decision on one of these mid-sizes later this year, the raptor ranger is also going to be interesting but I haven't written off the new Tacoma yet. I also would like to see the Bison version of the colorado, supposed to be revealed May 31.
the base model looks much better! Also love the vid! Keep up the good work guys!
I really like the new ZR2, styling, interior, and I am warming-up to the 4cyl-Turbo. Well done Chevy. Nice advertising demo.
My question is why is it only Hyundai and Kia can offer a 10yr/100k mile warranty????
Cause only a fool would offer that on a vehicle like this people are gonna beat to hell.
I'm assuming it's because the average amount of people dont keep their vehicle for 10 years. On top of that. The average amount people who keep their vehicles for the average length of time. Is getting smaller as leasing and subscription services are becoming more widely available.
Because they find any/every reason not to honor that warranty.
Because Hyundai had really bad reliability so they were forced to offer the 10 year warranty on the engine and transmission
Because they can't do more Tham mall crawl
I pray that I'll be able to order one of these soon. I am obsessed with this new ZR2!!
You can order now I believe
@@mikemissouri5152 I can, I just need to graduate college first (2 more weeks) I've been searching for a job but no luck yet
@@samerkia good luck. I bought a new 17 ZR2 and it’s been great. Look forward to the new one. The Bison is going to be amazing
You got a great job! I'm jealous.
Wow back in 2012 I bought a brand new from the dealer, fully loaded F250 Crew Cab, 6.7 Diesel Lariat truck for $55k. It's insane that this little toy truck that can't tow jack squat costs that much. I love the look of the ZR2 and the suspension. But it's only good for towing a lawn mower to your grandmom's house. These trucks should cost under $42k for the very top package. $60k is insane.
If only the market price wasn't out of control.... Granted there a lot in this package, it's still a lot of money
I love the overall look. The performance is on par for its class.
8:39 It sounds like a vacuum cleaner. 😂
As soon as the video hit 4:40, I got an ad for a Ford F150 FX4 package showing off it carrying SxS off-roaders! HILARIOUS for TH-cam ads to do that! I actually watched the entire ad because it was actually interesting! I am now curious as to the PRICE DIFFERENCES in various manufacturers off-road worthy packages. It's time for TFL to do a 4x4 lineup PRICE comparison!
Let's get TFL Truck to do a FULL PRICE POINT COMPARISON of ALL low-end, mid-range and high-end OFF-ROAD trim levels between Jeep, GMC, Chevy, Ford, Nissan, Toyota with a full-breadth comparison between 4x4 Compact, Mid-size, Full Size and Heavy Duty trucks AND their various trim levels to give us a final table of ALL price points we can expect as a consumer for each level of 4x4/off-road worthy trim level and manufacturer-offered package options.

Impressive so far… interesting MPG, of course this isn’t indicative of any sort of normal DD conditions but 9.7mpg?! Y’all must have been Hoonin out there! Lol
Jealousy abounds…
Good video but, would the trail boss follow ZR2?..
WHY BUY ZR2 over Ranger Raptor??
I like a lot my 2018 ZR2..but the seat were hard and the leather breaking at the stitching. Still no automatic small window when ranger and taco do.
looks like 2023 colorado ZR2 can directly use 35X11.5R17 tires based on the gaps shown @27:00.
The ZR2 Bison will have 35s
@@bahamatodd it is different. ZR2 Bison will cost an extra ~10K with many enhancements not necessary for non-extreme offroaders like us, but with just changing the tires, 1K extra will gain what we need. Selling OEM 33" tires will save a few hundred dollars further.
Awesome video, awesome that Chevrolet took you on that race.
It sounds that way have concerns, so don’t buy it!!!
Why Ford has been successful with the 2.7L ecoboost in F150 and GM used their 2.7L in half ton truck before it showed up in the mid size trucks.
These trucks are great! I'm adding a work truck 4x4 to my fleet.
No, the front anti-sway bar cannot be disconnected.
Love the new truck!!!!
Thank you for watching.
Hardest part for me was picking the color 😅
I would suggest getting the additional AUX kit factory installed, it’ll be a pain to DIY later. I got every option available except the bars since I needed a hard cover. I really wished they would of given me the option for the heads up display tho.
switch pros, s-pod, and garmin are all superior aux switches tbh
I would have like that HUD option as well. I believe the Silverado has it, so I wonder if it can be done aftermarket or dealer installed.
