Shoshana Bean is a Broadway powerhouse who can sing any genre in any key. She can make you laugh or weep with equal alacrity. Her incredibly technique combines with her emotional power. There are many great youtube videos but Make it Rain from the Ace Theater and She Used to be Mine are fantastic. Duets with Avery Wilson and Cynthia Erivo are also great.
Hadn't seen this one before. It's clearly an older one so I'm a lil' surprised I hadn't run across it till now. Thanks for covering it Lyle! Christmas in July is a thing, so why not Christmas in April! Cheers to another awesome reaction!
Nice review, if you liked Shoshana you may want to check out her "Make it rain" live at the Ace hotel and "She used to be mine" look for all the purple lights behind her. She has many others, but those two show two more sides to her and are likely to draw more views than the others that unfortunately aren't as well known.
Well it’s getting bloody cold here in Melbourne so the song feels fitting 🥶. And that’s coming from a scotland native who’s clearly finally acclimatising to being cold in double digit Melbourne weather after 6 years here. I’m losing my hearty Scottish-ness. Where is that girl who would go out in minus weather in barely a dress and cardie!? 😂 Great reaction as usual! Always look forward to Voiceplay Fridays.
Also for (even more) playful and fun Voiceplay I would recommend “Elvira live at the Gordon performance centre” the usual goofy antics especially between Geoff and Earl.
Shoshana Bean has voice that can carry you away , her singing She Used to be Mine from the play Waitress is stunning, Purple Rain if you want to hear the powerhouse she can be. Great reaction I hadn't seen this one.
I think people misunderstand this song a lot, I never got creepy vibes, I always thought they were singing in a playful way as if the girl actually wants to stay but she's jokingly trying to deny it because of how conservative people were at that time
I know that some take exception to these lyrics. I'm old and see it as flirty and, sure, the guy is trying to seduce the gal, that's a given, but she wasn't putting up much of a fight,. Oldies like me understand how the game is - or was - played.
I think you and I are about the same age. I know that I had already heard the song when I was in my early teens and stumbled upon the movie in which it premiered called "Neptune's Daughter". It was an Esther Williams musical, and the song actually appeared twice in the film. The first time it was a duet between Esther and the male lead, Ricardo Montalban, who is playing a rich playboy. A complicated plot of mistaken identities, but no way is Esther 's character going to be persuaded to do anything she doesn't want to do, and she knows exactly what he's trying to do. The song is repeated later in the film, but this time the female and male roles are reversed. Betty Garrett plays Esther's sister, who has a crush on a character played by Red Skelton. And she is the aggressor trying to get the other person to stay, while Red is anxiously and nervously trying to get away. So, having seen that as the original context for which the song was written, I have never taken the lyrics as meaning a serious attempt to coerce someone against their will to stay.
The way I've heard it explained is that the woman wants to stay, but at that period in time it was seen as scandalous for a woman to stay the night at a man's house if she was not married to him. So her reasoning for making excuses to leave is so that everyone won't gossip about her and think she...how to put this lol....has loose morals. However, if that is not an acceptable explanation to anyone, just read what VP wrote in the description box. They really lean into that idea that this song has a creepy undertone and they're trying to dodge it. 😂

I LOVED this!!! So fun, so playful, beautiful harmonizing- it was great all the way around!!💜🎶💜
I am from a different era and I love this song, especially with the Voiceplay twist.
I'd go with their version of The First Noel.
Definitely a blast from the past. 50's vintage I think.

Christmas in July… 😁 Sometime you find little gems in the video’s description… ☺️

@@patriciaschuman4205 I don't know your age but I just turned 80 and have seen and done it all. Well most things anyway. :)
