"With Mr. Geoff Castellucci singing to me, she's putting up more of a fight than I would!" - classic!!!!! My thoughts exactly 🤣

The longer Geoff’s hair gets the lower his bass notes get 🤭🤭🤭

I absolutely love this fun, flirtatious song. I have no issues with it. I know it's because of my age (75), but in the time period that it was written it was a little naughty but not sinister.

So very true about the naughty not sinister. It was just a cute little tune that we loved back then.

Shoshona is a big name on Broadway, and has stareed in Wicked and Waitress, among other things so she's awesome. In fact she was Idina's stand in, and the first person to take over the role when she left! As for rhe lyrics to this song, I think if you listen and read them in context its pretty clear the 'hey, what's in this drink?' line is obviously allegorical - its a joke, because she's finding it difficult to leave and is looking for an 'excuse'. The immediate follow up line is "I wish I knew how to break this spell".

Shoshana replaced Idina in Wicked. She and Cynthia are friends and have done holiday concerts at the Apollo Theater. Shoshana's "Make it Rain", "Pawn it All" and "She Used to be Mine," are a good start to knowing her work.

So, this song was written during a time period where people in general, and particularly women, were expected to remain celibate until marriage. So the singers are going through the motions of pretending to say no over and over again, exhausting all the excuses. Most of the lyrics are talking about how other people would judge her if she stayed, and not about how she feels about staying. The line ‘what’s in this drink?’ Was an in-joke of the time period. The drink in question was usually mild, if not completely nonalcoholic, but it was a way to signal that the lady was planning on blaming the drink later.
This was a time period where women weren’t really allowed to say YES, even if they wanted to, so there was an intricate dance that had to be done.

Thanks for your reaction! Voice Play recently released their cover of "Stand By Me" and it is stunning! Somehow it went unnoticed and very few reactions to it possibly because it is a mall format and maybe people thought it was a mini/short instead of a full length video. I hope to see your reaction to it soon.

I wish people would watch the movie this song is from (Neptune's Daughter) before passing judgement on the song. There are two separate scenes, one with Ricardo Montalban and Esther Williams, and one with Betty Garrett and Red Skelton, in which Betty Garrett is the one trying to convince Red Skelton to stay. It's just a fun song, and I'm really glad Voiceplay chose to do it.

The way you "take" this song is in the spirit it was intended; a fun, flirtatious song from a different era.
Save the presentism for the historians.
    Keep on keepin' on, man!

Such a song - reminds me of the days before I married the love of my life, and we spent time trying to sweep the clock around instead of having him go too soon.

I love this reaction, because you're just so upbeat and warm, with so much positivity and appreciation for the music. I mean, I know you're not a technical music genius anymore than I am, but your perspective still manages to always be interesting and adorable. I also just love how you close out your reaction every time with wishing everyone a good whenever-it-is-for-them. I just love your charisma and your energy.

You NEED to deep-dive into Shoshana. She was on Broadway as Elphaba in Wicked. She probably has as much talent in her left pinkie than most people have in their entire body. :)

I think people of my generation the baby boomers don't have a problem with this song because we know it was written as just a flirtatious fun song nothing sinister, I understand why the younger generations have a problem with it but I still love it.

Yes! Check out more Shoshana. I love her voice.
I love how VP turned this into what it was originally meant to be: flirty hard-to-get lady concerned with social appearances and flirty guy urging her to ignore what "proper ladies" are supposed to do, not about roofies (which are no joke and women are traumatized by such vile acts, so I don't blame women for feeling uncomfortable about that line in the song).

There's a seldom seen video of Home Free doing this song live, outdoors, in the winter from a railroad boxcar. They were on the Canadian Pacific Christmas charity train that year (2014). That train comes through where I live in Minnesota and it is COLD during those shows. Like below zero Fahrenheit cold.

‘This song was written in 1944, but being in the 1949 movie “Neptune’s Daughter” starring Esther Williams,Richardo Montilban, Red Skelton, and Betty Garrett really popularized the song. In 1944, Loesser wrote "Baby, It's Cold Outside" to sing with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their housewarming party in New York City at the Navarro Hotel. They sang the song to indicate to guests that it was time to leave. Garland has written that after the first performance, "We became instant parlor room stars. We got invited to all the best parties for years on the basis of 'Baby.' It was our ticket to caviar and truffles. Parties were built around our being the closing act." In 1948, after years of performing the song, Loesser sold it to MGM…’

This is such a beautiful version of such a cringey song. It's a song with a much weirder meaning now than when it was released and yet it doesn't feel creepy when Voiceplay sing it, possibly because Shoshana sings so much of it too...
Thank you for the reaction DJ! Really loved this one. I sense a new artist on the polls come January...maybe some Shoshana? :P

The song is meant to be flirtatious, nothing more. Any other interpretation is a reflection of the listener.

    • @emilyrln

I'd argue that other interpretations are more about changes in dating culture and consent, particularly the very real danger of date rape drugs.

    • @emilyrln
      @emilyrln หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I agree; the more midrange tone suits the mellow vibes very well and doesn't draw attention to itself. Geoff's voice in this range also blends beautifully with Shoshanna's!
