I got the same car with the N47 engine. 250‘000k. Servicing it as foreseen, manifold cleaned at 170t km. Love the car, but the day the chain rattles it will probably not be worth fixing it from an economical point of view. Repair costs in Switzerland will surpass car‘s value by far. Excellent job here, true car mechanics!

Yes I'd like to know the oweners thought process on giving the go ahead on this. The logical thing to do is to scrap/sell as is and cut your losses. The problem the owner now has is this could be the start of many other things failing if previously havent already which in turn will make you feel even more compelled to spend on repair costs.
used to love BMWs as a kid, always wanted one until i was old enough to realize what he said, that you shouldnt be optimistic if you drive a BMW, you should be prepared for big bills
I have the same core engine in my 2002 Rover 75. MG Rover had the foresight to not use the swirl flaps or a dpf. They still have issues (blocked PCV valves, Crank pulleys) but are pretty much bullet proof and suit the car perfectly. I love watching you guys work, perfect work ethic.
You move very fast and know what you are doing. A real mechanic. Your accent is very cool btw. The owner of this BMW E90 did the right thing. 3000 pounds well worth it. E90s drive great and are quality cars, if service is done regularly.
Enjoyed watching this. Bit of advice. I'm a retired mechanic. I have a bad back, knees, right shoulder and elbow. All that heavy lifting over the years took its toll. Whenever you can, get help with heavy lifting (gearbox)
Ya I noticed, but then I am qualified manual handling Instructer, pure madness lifting that bell house on his own, when the back goes you'll know all about it.
These guys has really good experience and work very well I enjoy watching their videos They are so educational Only don’t understand how there are still people who continue to buy and drive these cars
Best engine in terms of longevity is the M47 lump as used in the 3 series & Rover 75 and Freelander from 2000 era. These engines good for 700k miles, we know of a few. Timing chains last for life of engine and they don't use a drop of oil even after 500k They can be mapped to 160 bhp and higher with bigger turbo. Bullet proof .
machine also said poor maintenance on that motor. 330d M57 Owner here and its the best and longest car I've owned 🙌 mind you, I may of paid a higher price 7/8yrs ago full main dealer service history - we all know the saying, You pay for what you get!
@@thecareditionltd ok so I need advice please. I’m moving from Ireland to Scotland and I need to change my car. SUV type preferably diesel and Audi a3 size. If it were you what would you buy yourself?? 😅
Once a BMW, never again a BMW! Owning a BMW E91 was a real negative life experience for me, specially after successfully owning Toyotas for many years. Now happily back to Toyotas and Mazdas and very happy.
Shame you've been put off for life. I doubt I'll ever leave bmw. Don't tell me you got a 6 owner one with naff service history and was hoping it would be ok..
Got f20 1 seires I had my chain done last year and I very lucky to say the garage said the chain guide had started to come part and found little piece in the oil pick up. 😬 and add clutch and flywheel on top because they was knackered 🙄 nearly die when I got the bill 😳
What a absolutely engineer I’m seriously impressed Very very impressed And I’m not easily impressed Liked and subscribed to your channel Will be defo watching all your vids and sharing them to my mates
awesome rebuild and fix...great diagnosis...I'm bringing my Audi S4 for a once over, definitely. How long did the engine take to put back in with the parts that were ordered?
I’ve got an N47 , 126k miles, occasionally has a slow crank when starting but no timing chain noise. 63 plate had it since new and changed oil and filter regularly, still drives like new and will drive until it dies !
I wish I owned this car, because in 20-30 years time I can stay Gytis from Car Edition rebuild this car, which will be worth a few pennies 😉 #superstar
Amazing work but I think id have been sticking a used motor in (with a new chain kit). Fair play though the owner went pretty full in. I really hope for his sake the car isntt rusty! (My e91 was!)
I have an n47 with 2 snapped glow plugs and need to remove the cylinder head. Can I replace the head without removing the engine? I think I've seen it done before
@brandon77020 I've just replaced the head but haven't started it yet. All I did was put the engine in TDC, locked the cams and made a few marks with a paint pen.
The N47 - not BMW's finest moment. However, if looked after, they are actually quite good engines. I've had two. The first came from the factory with the timing chain issue. I had that done before it failed. The second had the revised chain guides from the factory, 200kmiles no problems so far. However, I will be changing the chain and guides soon; this is no longer an engine-out job (there's tools for the job), so it's not too hideous to do. Swirl flaps - yep, not the greatest thing either. Basically, it needs a new inlet manifold (which includes the swirl flaps) and a walnut blast every 100k at least. Turbos - well, that's down to how well and how often the oil changes are done. I've done mine every 10k regardless of what the car says, and no issues so far. So, definitely not an engine to tolerate a lack of maintenance. But, in this day and age, one really questions what's a good engine to have going forward. The N47 doesn't need Ad Blue - it's only Euro 5, not Euro 6 compliant. That means it is notably simpler to keep the emissions system up to scratch than the later engines. With a stock of inlet manifolds and chain guide kits and some maintenance dedication one could probably keep one of these going for a long, long while, in a largely tech-free car such as a 3 series which is an excellent daily driver in many regards.
Now there is a real mechanic 🤙
Dirty real mechanic😅
He knows his stuff 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
1h to pull the whole engine out is absolute madness😮😮😮
"chain on the left looks like it's 30 and ready to settle down"..😂
You keep producing top quality videos by top quality mechanics. How he remembered where all those bolts went is beyond me, I have to bag mine up.
Holy crap dude. That was impressive timing to get that engine out.
Thank you 😊👍
@@thecareditionltd Amazing how quickly things can be done with the right setup/tools!

Just had the chains done on my Jaguar XF. Main dealer quoted a rough figure of £4.5k. Independent garage £2.3k using all Genuine Jaguar parts.

awesome rebuild and fix...great diagnosis...I'm bringing my Audi S4 for a once over, definitely. How long did the engine take to put back in with the parts that were ordered?
Exceptional!
Surely the bill for this is gonna be more than the car is worth by at least double.
Always replace heat exchanger gasket and funnels when you have engine outside…
Also balancer caps and water cooling flange on head
Good Job
Thank you 😊👍
How many mechanics in modern dealerships are able to carry out this level of work?
They'd said ..."Sir, you need a complete new engine"..
The M47 had the same issue with the inlet flaps. Best thing to do was remove them
How do you remember where all the parts go back together?
That car is max 3 grand and owner is fixing it tfk😂😂 nice video by the way
Thank you 😊👍
Luckily I'm still running an M57. What are the N57's like?
In our experience, N57 is similar if not worse in terms of carbon build up. They also have timing chain issues however less common compared to N47 😊👍
@ thanks for that, maybe hold off on a F11 530d then and stick with my old E46 330d touring
Same here M57 Best and longer car I've owned 👌

@WilliamCurrie-p9t maintenance is the key - treat ot well and it will do the sane to you.
Like the videos, like the attitude :)

Do you suggest to delete Egr and DPF or not ? About the turbo and chain will save some miles if changed the oil most often ?

I have an n47 with 2 snapped glow plugs and need to remove the cylinder head. Can I replace the head without removing the engine? I think I've seen it done before
I had one where the timing chain snapped and bent all the valves and left it in the car, still have to remove gearbox for timing chains tho
@brandon77020 I've just replaced the head but haven't started it yet. All I did was put the engine in TDC, locked the cams and made a few marks with a paint pen.

Swirl flaps only in the higher power versions so it's one reason to avoid those 👍
@12:18 you used oil on PTFE crank seal, which is supposed to install dry and let it sit 12 hours to develop good seal !
How do you know if it is a PTFE oil seal? I do not think it is!
Its FPM
Reworked CLY HEAD & TURBO looks better that the entire engine & drive drain.
M54 engine plz
Sucka blet!😂😂😂 Nice job bro!😉👌🍻
That's my saying, champagne lifestyle lemonade wallet 😂😂😂
Now you see what happens to an engine if you neglect maintenance. Disaster.
wow so so expensive
“When you drive a BMW you should not be optimistic.”
Yeah this is why I drive a Toyota. It’s not as nice but you can’t put a price on optimism.
Pre 2014 N47 were not great.
The "cap" is more reliable than the car
BMW are reliable cars if you maintain them on time, no just drive untill everything fucked up.
5:50 exactly why i like petrol engines.
This mechanic can fix a car using only a hammer and a tree stump.
