  • You might watch the story of David (48 years old) and Annie (24 years old) are getting married in 90 days and Annie wants to have a transitional thai engagement party in her village but David can't afford to give her the money that is needed for the family, in order for them to get married as in order to marry thai woman you need to pay Dowry ( Sin Sod ) to the bride's family. If you haven't, here is the link to this documentary -
🔴 David Can't Afford His Young Thai Fiancé | 90 Day Fiancé: • David Can't Afford His...
In this episode, you will see how it is really like for Thai marriage, we think it will be useful for those who want to marry Thai woman to watch this before you REALLY MARRY THAI WOMAN, in order to understand the whole process of Thai marriage and to see various aspects of Thai culture, as Marriage with Thai can be relatively complicated, especially when it comes to Dowry system- how much would you pay to the bride's family as a proof that you have financial stability to take care of the family in future.
The Thai dowry system, which is more commonly known as Sin Sod, is deeply rooted in Thai culture. It is a way of honoring your bride’s parents for raising their daughter well. This is also a way of showing that you are financially capable of taking care of your Thai bride throughout your married life, because her parents tend to consider financial security as basis for the marriage. You will need to negotiate with your bride’s parents regarding the amounts of the Sin Sod and Tong Mun. Tong Mun, which means gold engagement, is 24-karat gold that you give to your wife-to-be. The rule of thumb is, the higher the amount of the gold, the better. This is similar to the giving an engagement ring in the West.

The Sin Sod is to show the parents of the girl you are marrying that you can take care of her and start a family without struggle. The Sin Sod (Dowry) is supposed to be given back to the bride and groom to get them started and of course you are the only white person there it's a Thai wedding..

Questioning so many things seems very disrespectful. When I married my Thai wife in Thailand, They told me what to do and i just did it. No reason to question or argue about it. When in Rome do as the Romans do.

we have a very similar dowry tradition in Malay culture! the only difference is, except for the (cash) money, gifts are also given from the female side to the male side. we also have the same traditions of having family members from each side carry the gifts on decorated trays to the wedding venue. the shell ceremony is also present in Malay weddings where the bride and groom are seated on decorated seats with people coming by and offering their blessings!
p.s. Tah, you look so beautiful in the traditional attire!

Very interesting! I never went to a Thai wedding, but I did go to a sad ceremony, (don't know the name), 100 days after a funeral. Similar in the participation of the monks, giving them gifts, serving an elaborate banquet to them and the guests. It was in the sala(?) at a temple, not a hotel. I'd love to attend a happy ceremony such as this.

What a wonderful and well put together vid on a Thai wedding. This video is a must watch for People from other cultures who wish to be included in the thai culture or any SEA country . Many of the practices here are the same in Vietnam. As a westerner, it is important to smile, be patient, have a positive attitude and role with what ever is happening. Her family will be concerned with your haveing a good time and making sure food you like will be available. (And please, do not talk about funerals on the way to a wedding.....)
May I ask... do the guests give lucky money to the bride and groom?

Financial stability is a great start. Some marriages don't last because of financial problems, so ensuring understanding of the need to be financially stable can do no harm.
Jimmy, you're living a dream being accepted by another culture, no need to bring up Disney movies. You are living in the real world with people who are embracing you, embrace this reality.

in india many girls dont ask for her share in real estate of her parents and whole property goes to son... so taking this thing into consideration parents give gift/dowry to her when she get married.
asking for share in property looks rude according to indian culture hence they do such things and indirectly gives her share in this way.....also son and his wife takes care of son's parents for whole life so they get a little more share than daughter. girls goes to her home where son and parents livr together and they gives her lots of gifts and jewellery, new clothes during diwali festival and in Summer vacations. This is the common in India which keeps brother sister bond strong even after marriage and builds good relation between two families.

I’m Thai .. dowry in Thailand can mean a lot of things . We give dowry because a lot of things .. first to prove the financial status of the groom that can really take care of her daughter and most of the bride family will give it to the groom and bride to start a new family ... and normally the groom and bride ‘s family with settle how much the Dowry before they plan the wedding ..so it can be little or lots of money land or jewelry depends on how rich the groom and bride ‘s family ... a lot of bride families also dun take the dowry .. it ‘s depend on how they settle it but normally dowry is a important part of a tradition

@@brittainelyles2606 Basically. In modern times you don't need that much $$$ to start out a marriage. Both people are usually working and not buying into "FACE" aka "Keeping up with the Joneses" will save you lots in the long run. To Thai families "FACE" is their culture. To call it stupid is to insult "muh traditions" no matter how factual it is.

One important thing that you should keep in mind when discussing Thai dowry is that its amount is based on your Thai fiancee’s status, education, occupation and other related social background information (such as her virginity). An average middle-class, university-educated Thai lady deserves a dowry of 100,000- 300,000 baht. A dowry of a million baht for an uneducated lady of modest means is just ridiculous. Thai dowry prices fall drastically if your bride-to-be has been previously married, already has children, or is not a virgin anymore. In fact in most of these instances, no dowry deserves to be paid.
Thai dowry, however, is usually symbolic in nature and will normally be returned to the married couple after the wedding, so as to help them start on their new life.
