I always paid on dates, then got sick and couldn't work. Yet a girl I started seeing still expected me to pay, every time. Not even go halves. Because "it's romantic..." I got better, studied medicine, now I'm rich and pay for everything again, but I have ZERO respect for women like that. My partner still wants to pay at times. Now that's a strong woman!

A 48 year old with seemingly limited finances and borrowing of his mates is way out of his depth. At 48 and in Thailand with a 24 year old fiance you should be financially capable of looking after yourself. Not sure you've thought this one out at all.

I dated a Thai girl here in america (she was on student visa going to school). Everything was great until she wanted to get married. Marriage wasn't a priority of mine but I liked the girl so I fugred I'd at least ponder over it. Then she told me that if we get married I have to pay her parents 1million baht ($33,000 usd) and some gold on top of that. And that was the moment we broke up.

It's a cultural thing. Thats no difference from Westerner buying there fiancé engagement rings cost $20,000 - $50,000 U.S.D not including the cost of the wedding , food etc etc..)

Bit late the party but here it goes: Usually the groom's family will help and provide some funds. The dowry itself usually will be returned to the couple and is more of a symbol. Only a part from the gold will be kept by the parents.
Apart from the wedding costs and some gold most of the dowry will be returned to him.

it is up to the family. Most likely this is to show he can take care of her. Thai families will ask this if they do not know the groom well or they simply dont like him. Consider if a man asked to marry my daughter and I do not like him. I would simply ask for an amount that I know he could not pay. want to marry my daughter pay 1,000,000USD. That would be what I would ask if i learned my daughter wanted to marry a US service man as I would not be very pleased with her choice of mates as I do not like the US military.
