I can only say that my Thai wedding has been one of the most exotic, magical and happiest days of my life. As a Western guy, I was fortunate to have both my parents and my brother attending my wedding which made it a much more special day given that everyone had to travel from different parts of the world. Thai people are the most humble and charismatic humans on earth.
I also live in rural Thailand near a village. “Community family” is truly the theme with this type of life in the countryside. They seem to accept one another despite each other’s faults or ( for some) craziness. Your narrative is excellent about this wedding ceremony. Thanks for posting.
We had a similar ceremony in Northwest Thailand. I feel a part of the community and I love my family in Thailand and the people in the village so much! I was 60 and my wife was 59 and it’s interesting to see how many people were surprised that us old folks can fall in love! Thank you so much for your videos! I know it takes time from your personal life to create such high-quality well narrated videos. For you, your family, your village, and all people from Thailand I pray: ขอให้ปราศจากศัตรู ภยันตราย ทุกข์ทางใจ ทางกาย และทางใจ ขอให้สรรพสัตว์ทั้งที่มองเห็นและมองไม่เห็นในทุกมิติและทุกภพทุกชาติอำนวยพรแก่ท่าน ขอให้สรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายสัมผัสได้ถึงความสงบและความสุขภายใน สาธุ สาธุ สาธุ
A lovely ceremony I hope these traditions last for a long time to come, it's traditions like this that keeps families close and happiness and hope alive.
One important thing that you should keep in mind when discussing Thai dowry is that its amount is based on your Thai fiancee’s status, education, occupation and other related social background information (such as her virginity). An average middle-class, university-educated Thai lady deserves a dowry of 100,000- 300,000 baht. A dowry of a million baht for an uneducated lady of modest means is just ridiculous. Thai dowry prices fall drastically if your bride-to-be has been previously married, already has children, or is not a virgin anymore. In fact in most of these instances, no dowry deserves to be paid. Thai dowry, however, is usually symbolic in nature and will normally be returned to the married couple after the wedding, so as to help them start on their new life.
Congratulations to the new couple. Its always fun to take part in such a celebration. I think everyone everywhere can appreciate such a vibrant and rice-laden wedding.
Thank you for such an insight into the Thai wedding ceremonies. I now understand much more of our wedding in Nakhon Pathon I for 120 fam and friends. 3 of the best days in my life…
Thank you for the informative video. I will be getting married in 2 weeks, also in a rural village in Buriram Province where we make our home. In the short time I've lived here I have seen the communal bond of the people. For instance, this weekend is a Monk ordination ceremony for a young man living close by. Many of the village women have been preparing enough food for entire village of about 600 people.
Thanks Ryan, it reminds me of the 3 similar marriages that I have been to in the villages around Khon Kaen and Chum Phae. At one I went to there was a part of the ceremony where the families of the bride and groom ceremonially barter over the amount of Sin Sod, which was done with much good humour and alcohol! Alcohol seems to be the fuel that keeps most village ceremonies going 🤣😂 As a non drinker I find it all very amusing. God bless you, Damo, and the boys 😀❤🙏
Great video on Thai life. I was married in Pattaya in a Muslim ceremony. Same community atmosphere. In any serious event, the community pulls together and it's so refreshing to be a part of that. We had nephew that died in an accident and the community response was amazing. Nobody in the family was alone for days as people came from all around and supported the family. The Thai way to manage dying is also worth exploring more on your channel. I know you went through some with Uncle Monk not long ago. It's just interesting the concept of death in Thailand. The Buddhist thinking changes their perceptions on the topic. Even in out Muslim community, it's very different.
Great video! I (and some other farangs) got invited by our hotel/resort owner and attended a wedding party on Koh Tao in 2004-ish. Location behind a petrol station😃. Father of the bride was singing on a stage. And some dancers that had not so many clothes on🤔. The food was 👌. Donation 500 bath. Great experience... Thank you for reminding me of that😁 Have a great day 🖖

Lovely ceremony ❤ many congratulations to the couple. The tradition is very similar to the malay weddings in Brunei, minus the monk, replaced with an Imam 😅.. however I do love the bridesmaid 'barrier' session..same as in malay weddings, we have that too! I once in my life participated in that tradition and I got $300 for 'blocking' the groom from the groom to let him enter the bride's home. So much fun! Peace and love to all ❤
In Europe we had something similar around 50 years ago called "Mitgift" which goes in the same direction. When I was about to marry my Thai wife, I was quite scared of that topic. The family actually wanted quite a bit of money but my wife did not agree on the amount and in the end I played around 700$ just to keep face. There are cases where the sin sod is quite high but no need to support the family. In my case, I support them since 15 years and that's ok. Regardless where your partner comes from, a relationship will always cost money :-) Nothing is for free really in this world.
Same thoughts . I got married after three months of knowing my wife which looking back was crazy but we are still together six years later and this video brought back all my special memories of the day . I got my Sinod back bar 20,000 bhat without even asking . I built my wife a home which was something I wanted to do and was not press ganged into doing. It’s the best decision I ever made and I love every minute of being together . My wife was married before and I think it taught her to appreciate the love of a good man.
Wonderful! You say that rural Thai people may not have much but in real terms they have much more than us in the West. We could learn a lot in the West from ceremonies like this, rather than a wedding which may include drunkenness and noise, envy, materialism.
Gold and money paid at our wedding were returned after the ceremony. We used the money for a down payment on a new home in Bangkok. Many times if you see gold displayed at a wedding, it isn't real gold. It's mostly for a show!
I recently returned from Thailand and while there was a guest of the inner circle of the brides family for her wedding. Started at 7am and finished at mid night. If it was a movie it would have been a blockbuster from Bollywood. Was full of human spirit and joy. As an observer I couldn't help but think about the ' spare no expense ' attitude in certain communities where ' expense ' can be the difference between misery and joy. I think there would be some potential marriages out there that could generate more terror than joy for one side of the family because of this . 🤪🤣 Great video Ryan. 🙏🙏
I love seeing them throwing rice they stopped it mostly in some USA churches etc because the mess they blow bubbles ! Beautiful and I love the community help that's heartwarming the Thai culture thanks for sharing this with us Damo looks beautiful!
I find it peculiar that there's such an enormous emphasis on money within a society that are generally too poor to actually live up to it. I mean just 1,000 baht is very much for many of them, but to not lose face they have to show off that they have money (even if they don't). I've seen celebrations where families that normally have a hard time to even buy food, have to give money not to be looked down upon. Same thing with making merit at the temple, where it to many is about showing what a good person you are, which is of course shown by how much you give. I know a person who gave away all the land, animals and money the family had and now they live in total poverty, only to show the rest of the village what good persons they are... The ceremonies part from the focus on money are very nice and beautiful though.
Pretty much same as mine 10 years ago, great day lots of fun. Thank you for that, whilst it was explained to me at the time what would happen it was never explained why it was happening, why were we parading round at 7 in the morning, why were her sisters standing there with a string blockade and why were my feet getting a wash.
So different from normal weddings Where the parents pay for everything…to treat the guests On their costs…the guests just came and enjoy…it’s a tradition treat ..
We never received the "life lessons on a happy marriage" Acceptance and understanding you learn when living together. Beautiful wedding ceremony! Thanks Ryan. All the best to you, Damo, Otis, and Hugo PS. It always seems the women are more happy than the men at the weddings.... 5555 or is it just my biased mind 5555
Im Catholic in the U.S. We too throw rice at the bride and groom as they exit the church. I remember when I was a little boy throwing rice at my uncles wedding. It hit his bride in the eye and I felt terrible.
Well done Ryan you have produced a valuable reference video here. Perhaps it should be viewed for anyone who is planning marriage here in Isaan to help understanding the full significance of this commitment.
Ryan not sure if you know that all the envelopes and cash strapped to the bride and groom after entering the bedroom is removed and recorded in a book. All funds received are normally returned to the giver should there be a wedding in their family. Been there, regards . Oh and still happily there😆
It's great that many people in the village are invited, but are there also people in the village who will have not been invited? If so, why would that be?
My Wife and I had a traditional Thai wedding, after the ceremony ,Everyone had to congratulate Us with a toast, I don't drink, so My Darling new bride had the responsibility, afterwards I had to carry Her around. 🤣

Buy a plane ticket and go there
Thank you Ryan for sharing this exceptional wedding in Thailand ❤

I got married to my beautiful Isaan wife in January of this year such a special place in my heart and special ceremony ❤️

Quite right 👍
I am attending my first Thai wedding tomorrow, also in a very rural area. This video was an excellent introduction. Thanks.

Nice wedding ceremony ❤
My Wife and I had a traditional Thai wedding, after the ceremony ,Everyone had to congratulate Us with a toast, I don't drink, so My Darling new bride had the responsibility, afterwards I had to carry Her around. 🤣
My Wife and I had a traditional Thai wedding , i don't drink alcohol , so She had to toast each table, I had to hold her up about half way through.
Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
Really interesting thankyou ❤
You’re welcome 😊
Thai and Indian Weddings are so similar
Beautifully done.
Thank you very much!
I was very surprised some of their traditions are the same as in Azerbaijan.. I think all asians are similar
I remembered quite a few of the customs, the parade and baring, but I noticed in this case, no monks. Is this usual ?
apparently they stay private at the wedding but the parents and bride and groom see them in private! :)
Odd that, we had 9 monks at our wedding on 9 September 1999 which was supposed to be lucky 🤣
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Interesting video to watch. 👍🙏
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for mentioning เหล้าขาว😂👍🏽555
It is little bit similar with North East India's wedding
Just remember, if she has been married before, the price goes down. Or her age has a factor. Glad they got married, but just keep your wits about you for getting married. I was once offered a young women for 1 million baht, I declined. Later she married a Thai man for 10,000 baht. Plus, if any of my boys want to marry. I will always check the other’s cellphone, in this day and age.
This is alot of sinsud specially for thai couples
its not shocking for most south asian people
You’re right 😁🙏
hope to see more video like this from you..a tradition or anything about real life in thailand..
Lovely ❤I really want to visit
Brilliant, Fantastic
Thank you 🙏
