i just want to say I LOOOOOOVE YOU!!!!! LOL im a garage sale vulture, i go to the sales, buy things, fix them up and resale them. i never thought to buy furniture and revamp it but now i will. you gave clear step by step directions all while still making it look easy. I showed my husband and he laughed while rolling his eyes and said "oh lord, y'all women are seriously talented in every way that us men didnt know" lol. thanks again lovely and i also subscribed to your channel
Was going to buy a new couch but after watching your video im so inspired. You have just saved me thousands of dollars! thank you so much! now I just need to figure out how much material I need.
Omg you did a good job. I have a sectional beige leather couch that I bought 3 years ago for about $1300 and in about 1 year after I got it it started pealing off easily realizing that it was'nt real leather. I got so furious spending so much money on it. After me I finally said to my self perhaps I can find away ti reupholster a couch with another fabric so after me searching on youtube how to do it your sight was more simple to learn. Thank you so much for sharing.
michelle sanchez Thank you for watching Michelle! Subscribe to my channel. I will have a lot more reupholstery projects to show! send me pics of your project when you are done!
"Don't be tacky, people, finish the couch" I love it, that's exactly how I am. It's not difficult to add that extra little bit to make it look polished. Fabulous videos, I'm reupholstering my couches once I get the fabric. I'll definitely be coming back to this video when I do.
I am assuming your a novice, I just wanted to tell you u did a GREAT JOB, very smart to use the cereal box in lieu of having tack strip. I cant imagine how your poor hands must have felt after using a manual hardware stapler though, should u venture to reupholster in the future i would recommend get a cheapo air stapler fr ebay or harbor freight, the manual hand stapler uses a Thicker Gage Staple which tends to tear the seams over time and are shorter so they dont go far enough into the wood frame to secure it for long term use...
@@x-mess yes air staplers require the use of an air compressor. There are electric staplers on the market .. I don't personally recommend them. They are fine to staplers into soft wood or mdf but if u have a piece of furniture made with hardwood they are garbage
You have given me the want to reupolster my chaise that went to our sectional. I've even already bought the fabric for my project and it's still less then buying a new chaise . So hopefully in a month or so I'll have a redone section. Thank you so much for the inspiration I'm even going to do it blue color and with an accent color fabric with air planes on it . I hope my son loves it . Love your videos been benging since I found this one .
This is so inspiring! You have my creative juices boiling lol. I definitely need to do a video of me doing my couch. Thanks for sharing! My husband got excited when I showed him what you did to your boyfriend's couch. We both hate throwing things away. The way you did it was so simple. OMG.
Awesome job!!!!! Im about to tackle our sofa and you answered some of my questions on how to get clean edges. love the cereal box strip idea!!!! Thanks for posting this video. Very helpful to a newbie.
Wowwww thank you sooo much for this video, I basically have the same couch shape but it is faux leather and my new kitty destroyed it! So, broken hearted..and refuse to toss a perfectly good, new couch out, I decided to embark on this re-upholster journey. Thanks to you and these 3 part videos, I now feel confident enough to tackle this project!!! 😙
ur such an angel to me.. now i know how i make my sofa looks new...than trowing it i will just do like u do also..thank you for the time sharing this..its helps me a lot..keep it up..god bless u
I have a peeling sectional sofa (damn bonded leather). I just thought to myself, i need to cover myself because no companies seem to make covers for sectionals, and my wife just gave the comment, which means she i ready to buy. The sofa is very comfy actually. So now i am going to hunt down some material, and start one section (7) at a time. lol Thanks for the inspiration. And stay natural, better look! :)
Thank you so much for this! My fiance and I don't have it in our budget to get a new couch and found a barely used one online for sale but it's so ugly so I looked up how to fix that and I found your videos. I also love the bench thing you have behind it instead of normal end tables
I am new to your channel and just subscribed. I can't wait to reupholster my couch next weekend!!!. My coach has great cushions but is dirty as hell from the children in my life. I really can't afford the $2,000 new couch I want so I will get to work replacing the fabric. Thank you Diva
thank you for this video- have a free couch that is solid; the bottom tag says its from 1983!!! that is so solid- and i am going to reupholster it!!! thank you forever
Thanks so much for the step by step instructions. I plan to do this next month but I only want to do the seat and back rest area. I believe it wont be as tedious but the three part video have for sure motivated me to go ahead and do the damn thing. I've been told by many to say just forget it and buy another sectional feeling determined I decided to use one #1 resource (TH-cam). To my surprise I found the perfect tutorial (yours) Before seeing your videos I assumed the materials I needed and to my surprise I was on point...that made me have that much more confidence in the pending project....Ok welp fingers crossed and wish me luck. Im ready to enhance my love for arts and craft...next up framing canvas oil paintings but first this doggon sectional. THANKS AGAIN!!!!
+Artrece Castle yay! I don't know why I am just no seeing this. TH-cam is slipping on their notifications. I'm glad this video helped you! Hit me back and let know how the setional turned out.
Amazing! I haven't done any upholstery work before, but im way crafty and a natural DIYer. I would rather make something then try to find and buy it. New couches are too expensive! I want some new furniture for our first home and i have a tiny budget. Like i don't have any $ for any thing. Better DIY it! This is the best tutorial i have seen yet. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.
+Aira V My apologies for just now seeing this. Here is the link to my blog where I make the ottoman thehandyhomegirl.com/2015/02/how-to-make-a-storage-ottoman/
I firstly want to say I Love love love your channel and videos.. also I was wondering where you got your fabric from. I am going to redo my sofas and I have been having the hardest time finding great cheap fabric.
New Subbie here! Omg you did that! I am preparing to do my sofa which our huge puppy, a ridgeback ruined. It was faux leather. At any rate can you show us how you did the cushions? Your "New" sofa is fabulous, especially in that blue! Great job!
+sure1852 Thanks new subbie! Are you a sewer? you basically take the pieces from the cushion apart and use them as the pattern on your new fabric. then sew the new pieces together just like to old pieces were sewn.
+Ashley Spearman (The Handy Homegirl) no it was all junk. my dogs wouldn't even sit on it haha we ended up getting a new set from someone for free, they were just giving it away on fb so we snatched it up .
yes! just remove the faux leather like it is regular fabric and use it as your pattern. you don't want to feel the bulk and peeling of the old material underneath.
Ashley, have you ever done a "deconstructed" sofa? I'd really love to have that look in my kids' playroom, but am not willing to pay the bazillion dollars they cost. (for less work and fabric, no less???)
Hey Homie! I will definitely be doing a tutorial for the cushions. Long story the cushions are done with the same process. Take the fabric off piece by piece, use the old fabric as a pattern, cut it out, sew back together, then lastly restuff the pillow. But anywho a video will be done lol c'ya+Simona Michel
Woow.... I think I would have lost my mind over this project. You did an amazing job! Well done! Kind of inspired me to at least maybe try! One question. How did you staple the sides where you had the metal tag strip?
gzz I wish most women where like you. Sooooo amazing crafty you saved my mariage $2.700 GBU and of course THANK YOU for your time I love your kitchen background its BEAUTIFULL!!!!!!
How would I go about doing this to a couch that doesn't have pillows that canbbe taken out. My couch does not have seat pillows that can be taken out it all connected. Maybe ill see how it wad put together when I take it apart. Also where can I get quality fabric?
i actually upholstered a couch like that. When the cushions are attached it involves a lot more sewing. Stripping the couch is the same. Just make sure you keep the pieces that you take off in order so you use them as a template when cutting the new fabric. Pay attention to how the old pieces were put together and sew the new fabric in the same fashion. Let me know if you have more questions!
I love this tutorial!(: where did you buy your material? And how much extra fabric did you have at the end of your project? Sorry to ask so many questions, I just have this same project in the works on a budget lol
I can't find the video on how to do the cushion and pillows. I am currently 9 months pregnant with two extra couches I love and refuse to throw away but the match nothing in my house. So I need help bad
+Mao Vue Hi Mao! I actually overspent on the material. I spent maybe $70 on fabric and only used $40 worth but better safe than sorry. the staples and staple gun $12. I reused all of the hardware and zippers that cam with the couch.
+Autumn Elizabeth Hey Homie! I will definitely be doing a tutorial for the cushions. Long story the cushions are done with the same process. Take the fabric off piece by piece, use the old fabric as a pattern, cut it out, sew back together, then lastly restuff the pillow. But anywho a video will be done lol c'ya

Hey lady, it looks like you converted your ottoman into a storage ottoman. I am about to attempt to make my bonded leather ottoman into a storage ottoman using the same original leather and an extra yard of leather, can you show how you stripped the ottoman?
+tacthom hi! i have a post on my blog about how i redid the ottoman Check it out! thehandyhomegirl.com/2015/02/how-to-make-a-storage-ottoman/ and Thanks for watching!
+Aaron Johnson Hi! yes I used a sewing machine. I watched Modern Homemakers video and did what worked and made sense to me. My prices for a standard loveseat starts at $600 3 cushion couch start at $750.
+Ashley Spearman (The Handy Homegirl) what state are you in I'm in Ohio but moving to Florida my plan is. To buy furniture and get it reupholstered I have my own fabric I want to do clothes, furniture,in tables and drapes so I can send you volumes of work not a one time thing so I'm find somebody I can deal with and deal long term and if I give you volumes of work is there anyway we can work on prices kind of like a partnership I am partially paralyzed from a flu shot so I would learn the work myself but let me give you my email goldenarmz40@gmail.com to communicate without everyone seeing my messages
Using Raisin Bran Strips makes for a professional edge.......Could have used a ruler LOL. Good video just some parts are hilarious. Using a tape measure and ruler would have helped you.
Next time you want to do the couch, be sure that you leave a 1 or 2 inch extra on the cutting of the edge of the fabric. That way you have an edge to pull while reupholestering the couch. follow the pattern of the pieces you took off, just cut them a bit bigger.
Next time put your outside arms or outside back fabric on first, then your tack strip and the a liner and then your dacron. Check out custom designs upholstery.com 👍
Yea I do, I got to thinking about buying a new couch but in reality I know I'm just paying for different fabric put on it so I'm gonna try this thing out with one of my chairs and see if I got what it takes to take on my couch lol wish me luck
lol disregard my comments on this. I just read through a few comments that indicate that you did sew to put some pieces together. Reading is fundamental LOL
i just want to say I LOOOOOOVE YOU!!!!! Will the fabric frey like jeans since it wasn't hemmed? Or is it unnecessary when re-upholstering the couch?

Great job
Wow! Amazing job.
Woow.... I think I would have lost my mind over this project. You did an amazing job! Well done! Kind of inspired me to at least maybe try! One question. How did you staple the sides where you had the metal tag strip?
I'm sure it was offset.
Meaning she left enough space to staple the mesh or dust cover.
You did great! I was getting sad that my sofa was looking so old....now I've been inspired, thank you! Now, what fabric to select?????
-LAURALAGOVISTA
Thanks! So happy I inspired you to tackle that old couch!! go to you local fabric store and look for thick upholstery fabric.

Where did you get your fabric and also my couch has pillows that are attached can it be done on that kind of a couch

I was wondering...what about when the padding on the arm rests of the couch and the seat are all worn out? did you have that problem with your couch?
How would I go about doing this to a couch that doesn't have pillows that canbbe taken out. My couch does not have seat pillows that can be taken out it all connected. Maybe ill see how it wad put together when I take it apart. Also where can I get quality fabric?

Next time you want to do the couch, be sure that you leave a 1 or 2 inch extra on the cutting of the edge of the fabric. That way you have an edge to pull while reupholestering the couch. follow the pattern of the pieces you took off, just cut them a bit bigger.
When you sewed the fabric did you use a machine?
+Jasmine Stepney Yes i used a machine
beautiful!
so what if the cushions are attached to the couch? Can you just reupholster over them?
yes you can but it will involve more sewing. once you take the fabric apart you will see how it was put together
ooooooooooooooo I'm enspired thank you
What part of the couch did u use the box strips for?
the top part of the back and and side of the couch.
Next time put your outside arms or outside back fabric on first, then your tack strip and the a liner and then your dacron. Check out custom designs upholstery.com 👍
