reupholstering a free couch - no electricity or sewing!

  • you don't need to know how to sew or have expensive tools to reupholster. i used multiple fabrics from discount stores (about $25 total) to reupholster a very nice old couch i picked up for a different job but never used.
the only tools used were a painter's scraper, a razor, scissors, a staple gun and a hammer. oh, and occasionally a pair of needle nose pliers. no power tools.
(FULL DISCLOSURE: i used a sewing machine to make the throw pillows out of cut-offs).
this is not a perfectionist's reupholstery job, but great for furniture shoppers above thrift shopping and below boutique stores. a much better alternative than a new, cheaply-made import sofa. the price - and style - reflects that.
i made this couch for display in my new store location @ decor, 87 state street, north haven ct. but it is for sale, too ;-)
    be good,
    tim

This made it look like it is so easy to do it! I have to try it!!! I have been passing so many projects for being afraid to do it. I wish I would have find this video before. Thanks for uploading!

It's not easy but it's possible and doesn't require fancy tools. You can do it! Besides upcycling. the goal of my channel is to encourage people to try, fail, and try again :)

@Anon Anon Being in the business I've seen and torn down and set right many jobs like this. One time I found a crumbled news paper from 1932 in a hole someone used to fill it. It had 2 great ad's of new chairs just like that sofa. $19.50 for the chair. Desperate people to fill in a hole with newspapers.

@Anon Anon You're toxic, it's so easy to hide behind the comments of youtube and act like you can judge every flaw this world has.

  • @ChristenEve
    @ChristenEve 6 ปีที่แล้ว +93

The negative comments going as far as calling him mean names are completely unnecessary! Seriously? So you're going to cut someone down verbally over a couch? A piece of furniture that was in the trash? Yes, because that's what this world needs more of. People wasting their energy tearing others down over objects that aren't going to last forever. I took upholstery classes for several months and I can tell you it is hard work and takes patience and passion to get through the project. You may not like how he chose to redo the couch but at the end of the day it was his find that he saved from the garbage ...and since it's his energy, passion and time being used and NOT yours then why speak to him like hes beneath you? Not only did he work hard on this project, he filmed and edited the whole process, so why not appreciate what you are clearly overlooking.

tim sway So very true! I loved your video! You prove that it’s possible to re-upholster a piece even without a bunch of fancy equipment! Which inspires someone like me who doesn’t have access to the equipment we used in class anymore, so thank you!!

ChristenEve thanks! The point of my channel is to inspire people to try new things and think eco-consiously in the process. This was only the second time I did any kind of upholstery. It's not perfect but I tried and I hope others will too :)

I've just started to re-upholster a French settee. At this point in time, I'm busy ripping away all the fabric, sponge, and lining, and all those staples. The tacks took a few hours to remove. I'm looking forward to cleaning the frame, rubbing it down, them painting it black and silver. I'm going to do the back in black white and grey Union Jack flag with grey and black cushions. It's my first ever go at upholstery but I've got a good family friend who is advising me so all's good.

The whole point is to show how you can upholster this using basic tools..and you even stated in the title!..so for those who are dissing you should first read and observe before making such quick judgment. .you did a good job and I admire your skills.

I am so happy I found this video. I have a sofa exactly like this, same fabric - just a different color. I have been wanting to recover it but wasn't sure if I wanted to restore it to original state (I already sew, so I might be able to pull it off) or go your route. Considering its used everyday by kids or grandkids, I think your way may be more prudent. At least I won't feel like I'm going to have a heart attack if they sit on the newly recovered sofa. Thank you and you did a great job. I wouldn't worry about the bashing over your decision to recover it the way you did, or your fabric choices...to each his own!!!

    • @timsway

I think the fabric on the cushions is cute, but I also think you made the right decision in just putting it on the cushions, because it would have been overwhelming on the entire couch haha. My boyfriend has a gross old couch so I was looking for just a simple way to reupholster it. 👍🏻

A blue backing instead of brown would have looked nicer aesthetically and less... Frankenstein. But very helpful video! Looks durable and fairly easy to mimic. I'm no seamstress so this looks far more manageable to me than fumbling around with a needle or a sewing machine. Thanks so much for sharing!

Tanya Foster Brown and blue go together so I disagree. You can mix abd math fabrics and still have the furniture match the room.

Not so sure about the choice of fabric but I think you did a good job as this shows anyone can make a sofa at home ..and for ppl like me who don't have access to the expensive tools this works just fine!

The fabric is certainly not for everyone, but you totally get the point of the video. Thank you!!

    Man oh man
Firstly how's it feel to not have OCD's... 2nd, I love ...love love your guitar making side, I guess because it's musical... This furniture redoing side, eh, not so much. It's the hodge podge, it's the size of the visable hodge podge...
There is BIG money in Ugly As Sin, there is a seat for every ace.
Now, go build me a Lefty Avant-garde Duo-Sonic with a stop tail, and Gibson bridge, and hotter Tele pic ups... Pallet wood, and a store bought neck would be swing...
Love your videos & thanks for being talented.

Maria Smith I have no idea how to reupholster (as many of the commenters pointed out!) I'm just not afraid to try (and fail) doing things. If you are not afraid, then you can too!

To the person making the unnecessarily rude comments: There was obviously no home training done over at your house. Most of us were taught from time we could make complete sentences that,"If you can't say something nice- then don't say anything at all." I wonder- did you and your friends giggle at what a "bad ass" you are? I know the Mean Girls act portrayed now in the media is supposed to be cool but The fact is- this man took time out of his life to try to teach something and to maybe help others- so it makes WHATEVER he produces truly beautiful and so far above anyone who feels so insecure and insignificant that they feel threatened and so they then try to bring others down with their "witty" observations. When all it is is just bullying plain and simple. The fact is that someone wanted to teach and help others enough so that it trumped his own insecurities and. was willing to lay bare his own ego to criticism. That fact in itself is beautiful thereby making your "approval"-and your judgment at this point is questionable- irrelevant.
P.S. Did you ever think that maybe he used different colored fabrics to better illustrate the PROCESS to show what was used where and not worried so much about the resulting aesthetic? -

thank you! give it a shot. In some cases, I bet you can even go right over the existing fabric. The way I see it, if something is already kinda wrecked, it's real hard to wreck it more. just try things and learn - (sometimes fail) and try again.
