    Hey Everyone!!! Just wanted to let you know we currently have a poll going on in the Community Tab about future content and a new update video! If we get 100 likes on it (Update post), I'll open up a Community Discord for everyone to chat! I've seen so many amazing conversations here and would love to keep them going, but wasn't sure if that's what you guys wanted!

      New to MMOs. Started 14 3 weeks ago. First a bard. Easy enough. Wanted to try healing. Easy enough. Got to that infamous dungeon, I think level 48. Couldn't cast esuna fast enough. We wipe several times. I panicked. I told them I'm sorry and maybe healing isn't for me. I quit that dungeon. I didn't want to hold them up any longer. Long story short, I kept at. Just started HW, my main the the WM. But the pressure that the whole dungeon was a failure because of me still lingers. But perhaps that's why I like being the healer. Like commented and subscribed 👍

    I was terrified of healing for the longest time (admittedly it's still not my favourite role). But once you learn to relax you panic less and just shrug off the accidents. It's remarkable how quickly one goes from "omg gotta keep everyone at 100%" to "eh, rub some dirt on it and slap on a regen, you'll be fine."
    Bless to all you healers out there, you do good work.

      One of the biggest advice I give to struggling/panicking healers is: "Plant yourself and just cast. There is nothing more powerful than a casting healer." You'd be surprised at how much it changed the attitude of many sproutling casters and produced the biggest change in ability. Whereas they struggled prior to my advice, they didn't really struggle after this. I even watched one eat an aoe to the face and just soldier forth. It was glorious

    The silly thing about healing is that the low level dungeons give you a wrong impression about what you need to do long term. You only get a straight heal and tanks don't have much mitigation/self-healing. Over time you acquire regen spells and tanks are way hardier and you have to adapt your playstyle.

    • @EverydayEorzean
      @EverydayEorzean  3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      Agreed!!! It's not just low levels either, my entire healing style changes depending on the expansion I'm playing in.

    • @jimmym3352

      Good to know. I'm just starting out this past week as conjuror. Which seemed closest to Shaman in Wow, though eventually I'll be a white mage I guess. I've only healed 3 dungeons so far, or maybe it was 4. It's gone well enough, but I know it will get much harder, the first 4 dungeons are pretty easy.

    • @Vokcas01
      @Vokcas01 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest i disagree.. your point overall isn't wrong but the modern ffxiv healing requires more uptime in ruin and stone than cure and succour, because the game lack of true balance people are synced the healer has the time to actually practise to switch between ATT and Support because of the lack of overall healing needed.

    • @EverydayEorzean
      @EverydayEorzean  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Vokcas01 I agree to an extent, I think we may have interpretted the comment differently. At lower levels there is definitely time to do damage and not a whole lot of damage going out. What I meant by my healing style changing by expansion is due to the lack of diversity in your healing options through ARR.
      If you're starting as a new player, you only have conjuer as your healer option , and conjurer doesn't get regen until 35 - which is a handful of dungeons in. Not to mention you have absolutely no oGCD heals until 50. Compare that to how you heal at max level (primarily from regens and oGCDs) and you have a completely different healing style.
      Players go the first expansion of the game where you area really learning and developing habits not being introduced to these methods.
      To be fair, I'm looking at this from an optimization standpoint of saving as many GCDs for damage as possible, which definitely wont' be the case for most players.

    • @Tdx21
      @Tdx21 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So here is my opinion. You have to learn to adapt. The game cannot teach you how you should be playing, in end game dungeons, at the beginning of the game.
      Firstly it will overwhelm players trying out tanking or healing for the first time. If you had all the end game abilities available and you tanked a dungeon with Ifrit (extreme) level mechanics at level 10-20, i guarantee you will roll dps and just forget about healing/tanking.
      Early game is to get you into things, mid game reveals more complex mechanics, but provides abilities to deal with that and late game pushes your knowledge and abilities to the limits by working as a team. As a player in any dungeon you have to remember, you are not a one person team!
      Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. Enjoy!

      Healer is a role that require more consciousness and attention than any other role. So take your time get used to many things. It will feel overwhelming at first but you'd feel satisfied and rewarded when you get it. Dive into state of "in zone", dancing around harmlessly while keep those poor guys alive. That's feel so good.
      On the other hand, Tank need a lot of charisma and confidence. While DPS need to squeezing every drop of their possible damage out of their class while stay out of harm. So every role has their hard point. And no one good at any of that from start. It's just because healer could feel our mistake more often than any other role. While DPS may didn't notice when they does low damage.

      Something to note as healer is how valuable Esuna can be in dispelling harmful Debuffs.
      It can be quite invaluable for your sanity in some encounters to just esuna that pesky "Sludge" Debuff which you don't have to focus on healing through the 30 seconds its on a Party Member if you can just dispell it and be done with it.
      You can tell if a Debuff is dispellable or not by a blue line above the debuff icon. If there is one you can Esuna it, if there is none you cannot.

    #2 is actually very valuable. I learned that lesson in The Vault on the final boss. Every time we got tethered I would try to break the tether, but at the same time try to heal whomever I was tethered to and I'd end up dying. Which of course meant we'd wipe. It wasn't until I said, "Screw it, I have to keep myself alive first," and prioritized healing myself that suddenly everything worked. It went against all my instincts as a healer, to heal thyself first, but it was what got me through that fight.

    I'd like to add one more point to this: know your class! Half the game's combat is knowing how to play your class, and having the confidence to play your class goes a long way to doing well in fights. That means knowing to cast Cure II over Cure I, popping Lucid Dreaming regularly for MP, and just knowing what your spells and abilities do in general. A lot of new healer grievances are actually neatly solved by your kit, so read your spell descriptions!

    • @EverydayEorzean
      @EverydayEorzean  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      YES! Excellent comment! Knowing your class is critical, as some of our abilities are sneaky and have multiple uses/benefits or change over time as we level.

    • @buxus3770
      @buxus3770 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cure 1 over cure 2 unless you get a free cure 2 ? Doesn’t shelling out cure 2 drain you way faster?

    • @FlickTakFlakAttack
      @FlickTakFlakAttack 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@buxus3770 In general, you'll want more healing over mana efficiency, because healing your party in one cast instead of two leaves you more time to do damage, and your mana is getting constantly replenished by lucid dreaming anyway. Towards the late game, white mages don't even have to cast Cure 2 barring extraordinary circumstances.

    • @EverydayEorzean
      @EverydayEorzean  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@buxus3770 This is kind of a nuanced thing as it's going to depend on what kind of content you're taking on and your play style. It falls under Lesson 3: Full HP is Not Required. It's actually the next video I'm creating and it's going to go into healing potential, wasted healing/overheal and then some advanced healing tactics for end game.
      So back to your actual question....
      If you zoom in on the tool tips, you are 100% right! Cure I costs less and has a 15% chance to give you a free Cure II, but when you zoom out for a 'bigger picture', you'd have to cast two Cure I's to equal the potential of a Cure II. Casting the two Cure I's will still be at a lower mp cost and have a higher healing potency in the end, but you've used two GCD's instead of 1 to achieve roughly the same effect, which is a GCD I could have used to do damage. Yes, Cure II costs more, but you should only be casting it when you'll get the maximum use out of it, so it shouldn't be draining your mp too much.
      1 GCD doesn't sound like much, but can add up to a lot over time. If your spend time chasing the free Cure II or primarily relying on Cure I's (especially at max level), you'll end up with a lot of overheal and a lot of GCDs focused on healing that could have been used to help dps the boss/mob down.
      So in the end (Lvl 80), it kind of boils down to an optimization thing. On paper, it looks like a Cure I would be better, but in practice, the Cure II free's you up to be more versatile and get your tanks topped off more quickly and more safely.
      I hope this explanation helped! Let me know if you have any more questions!

    Another advice is to know which healer you're playing : D Each healer jobs are different from one another and I'm lucky enough to have my FC mates explaining the difference for me. For example, WHM is the best when it comes to panic healing and doing damage while SCH is a shielder, meaning they don't have a lot of panic healing spells but they give good shields. AST is a hybrid of both and has the cards, which looks intimidating but it's actually really fun!

Be scared of your WHM is what I'm saying :D

      This! I main scholar, so my default healer mindset is about preventing damage and debuffs with regular shielding and managing my aetherpool so I always have emergency heals while still building the fairy gauge and managing my MP. When I’m on white mage, my reaction time matters a lot more in keeping my party alive, even if I have bigger heals available, and those oGCD heal charges come on a steady time-based drip rather than requiring effort from me.
      Knowing how to emergency boost your healing is also class specific. White mage has skills that temporarily decrease cast time and negate mana cost, and medica 1 is better than 2 if your party already has the regen. Scholars can feel underpowered for healing checks, but have various boosts that can stack together to help you make it.
      tl;dr - all healers are good, but not all are the same. Know your skills and be aware of what kind of healing is the most challenging for your class specifically, so you can accommodate for it.

    One thing I've learned while healing (currently lv 59 AST): if you and your tank are comfortable doing wall to wall pulls applying Regens to the Tank (and everyone else if those skills are available to you) helps a lot with MP management and will help you get into the swing of doing damage spells in higher level dungeons.

    A couple of more tips for any new healers:
    1. Gear makes all the difference. It doesn't matter how good you are, bad gear means less effective heals which means more time spent healing, more mana spent, and higher chance of people dying. This is usually only an issue when starting a healing class for the first time, but it can discourage players. Although it can also be problematic when entering new content, specifically expansions.
    2. While you shouldn't be worried about topping off your party, you may need to learn preemptive heals/shields. In all the chaos of battle, you'll notice healing will be easier when you prep your heals for incoming damage, especially aoes. This is a learning experience though, so your first times will always be harder than usual.

    Kind of a WHM specific addendum to the "always be casting" point... one of my favorite sequences to use during pulls is: DoT everything you can as you're running/pulling (since you can cast your DoT while moving), when you stop throw down Asylum where the tank has stopped, put Regen on the tank, cast Medica II, weave Assize (this healing combo should fix any health problems that might have started to occur by now), then IMMEDIATELY spam the crap out of Holy. As a WHM... HOLY IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF YOUR HEALING TOOLS DUE TO THE STUN, and I don't think enough people realize this. If you're stunning all the trash in your AoE range until their stun immunity kicks in, that's probably 10+ seconds of nothing touching your tank at all because it's stunlocked. By the time their stun immunity kicks in, if things haven't started dying, recast Regen/Medica II and keep Holy-ing for the DPS factor, as you can.
    Another less serious tip, though one that has been taught to me through years of experience healing in multiple MMO's... as a healer, you can heal a lot of things, but you can't heal stupid (on the part of others). Never forget that and you should be fine ;-p

    • @EverydayEorzean
      @EverydayEorzean  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with all of that!!! Holy is easily top tier ability in the WHM kit, the other thing that makes it amazing (for me anyways) is no target required.

  • @TheRockMouse
    @TheRockMouse 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would like to add that when going through trash pulls, it is OKAY and ENCOURAGED to stay close to your tank. There are a couple reasons for this.
    1. Your regen abilities may accidentally pull mobs off your tank if they miss one or two with an aoe. If you stay next to them, their aoes will always pick them up.
    2. Limits instances where you can lose line of sight.
    3. ALL healers have aoe abilities centered around themselves. Aside from AST which has a ranged aoe damage, WHM and SCH have melee range aoe attacks to encourage healers to stay WITH your tank. It is literally baked into the class to do so. While AST has a ranged aoe, they have some other abilities centered around them as well.
    The unfortunate thing I see a lot is that new healers think they need to stay back from the tank, and even see some people suggest them to always stay away. In 99% of cases, as long as you are dodging telegraphed aoes, you will -not- take damage just by standing in the group of mobs.

    The only thing I'd add, and it's sort of situational for casual content and lvling, is when you have Sprouts or players that might not be at a solid skill lvl yet, you should probably choose healing over damage. In Savage and high-end fights, sure it's a bit deal, but in normal content you can sacrifice some DPS for a kill rather than wiping and redoing the whole thing alongside all the drama that can bring. I jokingly say "Might wanna heal like it's World of Warcraft" when we wipe a couple of times, which almost always works if the other party members aren't outright trolling

If your tank pulls all the enemies between two bosses or your DRK has entered walking dead, you’re not a bad healer if you “cave” and use benediction. It’s there for a reason!
    And another one, arguably more important: if you’re still learning how to heal on a class, it’s ok to ask the tank to do smaller pulls! I accidentally used RDM as a stepping-stone between BRD and SCH back when I first wanted to pick up a healer job. After I solo-healed Dun Scaith and Orbonne as RDM, I decided I could be anything I wanted lol
    To add onto the "Not all deaths are your fault" point: Not all deaths are your responsibility. There will be times where someone in your party just cannot grasp mechanics at all, and at a certain point raising them from their 4th one-shot death becomes a burden on you, and a burden on everyone around you. You can't heal your party if you run your MP dry raising that DRG for a 5th time in 2 minutes! Let them lay there and watch the mechanics, and once the fight's over talk them through what they were doing wrong so they can do better.

    Re: healing dungeon dps
    Another good point to do damage in large trash pulls is that most healers are likely going to easily do top aoe damage. Skilled dps can keep up but it’s so easy to do massive aoe damage with healer aoe dps spells. Healers have some of the best aoe damage skills in the game if everything is ready the whm can nuke 1/4 of every single mob’s health in 2 gcds. (Whm’s holy also aoe stuns and this works as full 100% damage mitigation for about 4 gcds if nobody else built mob cc immunity.)

    one thing healers should know is that you should probably use your big cooldown for the trash mob pulls, you don't have to save them for the bosses because the bosses typically don't have mechanics requiring benediction, so feel free to use all your cool downs for the mob pulls so you can get through the dungeons faster, plus it makes you look good in the party's eyes if you can heal through big pulls.

    I had a few Conjurers in my Party who would not cast damage spells but instead would cast their basic healing spell (Cure I) unceasingly on the Tank.
    Granted it gets you through the dungeon too. :)
    Yes, you don't need to top of your Tank the whole time and if the Boss/Enemy has a Tank Buster (An Attack which inflicts very, very high DMG on the Tank), your Tank has also a responsibility to actually pay attention to it and use a Skill to mitigate the incoming DMG.
    It's not always the Healers fault if a Tank dies.

    Three years old and this video is fantastic and as relevant as ever.
    Healing is easily the most stressful job while sometimes being the easiest. If everyone knows what they're doing and you have a good group/run, you can essentially go through as a green dps, tossing out the occasional heal that never feels too urgent.
    If the group isn't as good then you immediately fall into the role of babysitter. There are those who will get impatient with deaths, even if caused by themselves, and whether their fault or not the healer is nearly always the first point of blame. It can be especially bad because they're half right. In some of these situations an expereinced healer CAN babysit the group and cover many of the mistakes, leading to a mentality that the healer should be able to heal through it so it doesn't really matter. This should not be the mentality. Just as you wouldn't want people making your job much harder you should be equally considerate.
    I also believe to become a better healer, you should try out and level at least one tank and the same to become a better tank. Spend some time healing. This way you should gain an understanding of eachother's jobs that will only make you better at your own.
    In both tanking and healing your worst enemy is always gonna be yourself. Don't be too hard on yourself, relax and allow mistakes to happen and to naturally learn from experience. Don't take negative experiences to heart. Bad attitudes are not your fault. On the counterside, don't be over confident. I've seen this particularly prevalent in tanks. Not knowing the instance too well, not being experienced enough on knowing when to mitigate, yet still pulling wall to wall while also not checking where the healer currently is. If you don't mitigate at the right time, outpace your healer, and get a legion of mobs gunning for you, you are going to lose health faster than your healer can restore it. It is then not their fault if you go down. Know your limits. Can I survive this pull? Not just putting it all on your healer.
    Same with healing. Don't impatiently pull ahead of the tank and grab mobs for them unless you know without a doubt you can deal with it. Also bear in mind your tank may not yet be confortable with bigger pulls. Be patient and switch to DPS instead for a bit.

    A good healer knows when to heal and when not to heal. If you know the fight, you also know when damage comes in and when you need to heal/shield.
    There are a lot of fights where you can leave your party at low health for quite a time and then you can heal up in downtime for example, or as a WHM use the Lilies to heal, for when you have to move.
    Your only job is to heal unavoidable damage, Raidwide AoE, Tankbuster, Auto-Attacks from the boss. Never prepare for a fight as a healer for all the possible mistakes some people might do, prepare for the unavoidable damage. If people make mistakes and die, it is not your fault.
    Another rule I go by is: "I care about your health as much as you care about it yourself" When i put my Asylum or Sacred Soil, or my Star down and people choose to not stand in it, even though they easily can, I am not gonna single target heal them. You gotta be that selfish as a healer, especially in more challenging content like Extremes or Savage, because there your heals need more coordination and can't be easily wasted on someone who refuses to be a teamplayer. You are not a babysitter who should run after every party member, because they want to stand in Narnia.

      and, when running a duty, always use your aoes! total eclipse and prominence are your best friends when it comes to trash mobs, and there's no real reason to be using your single-target skills until you knock the group down to just 1 mob left or when you reach one of the bosses. also, circle of scorn is a DOT aoe and it's probably my favorite skill that you get within the level 50 range
      paladin has a stupid amount of skills that are meant specifically for shielding party members from damage, and i'm still learning when to use all of them lol

I don't play many MMOs but the one I used to play, Ragnarok Online.. there was an EXP penalty on death and that was really frustrating. In high level content there, you basically lose hours of leveling just for losing EXP on death. Sage main here that came over from full time tanking. It’s very intimidating, especially at first and more especially in unfamiliar content.
    Sometimes you’ve *got* to go with pure healing in those wall to wall pulls, especially when your tank is a DRK. In 8-man content I prioritize AoE mitigators and heals over single-target heals even though the single targets are stronger. Keep your heal-over-time ability and your all-party shield ability on cooldown, and if you’re a Sage keep in mind that Taurochole recycles fast and is a good party-wide mitigator that synergizes with a lot of tank buffs, and Eukrasian Dosis on the boss keeps Kardia ticking while you’re occupied elsewhere. I usually put Kardia on the squishiest tank (DRK) but not always-I’ve been known to put it on melee DPS if the player is having trouble.
    The best experienced players will pop a Dorito over their head so you can follow them in mechanic-heavy instances. I healed the last Endwalker trial for the first time and after I mistimed mechanics and wiped the party twice (a single healer can’t keep the party up in that fight) one did and *bam* I stayed up for the whole fight.

    I think the main skill that will distinguish the veterans from the rookies in healing FFXIV is the understanding that healing is the easiest job in the game... oh, sorry, did I say job? I meant jobs, plural. Doing all those jobs simultaneously is the hard part! Keeping the tank healed is easy, doing your DPS is easy, weaving in your flavor of healer's off-globals is pretty easy, and the fight mechanics normally aren't much harder for you than anyone else. But doing all of those at the same time without missing one?
    You can tell the veteran healer out of the bunch when they top off the tank, while doing a mechanic, and then rescue someone out of position successfully. Healing is all a juggling act, and that goes double for SCH, as they have two cast bars to lightly consider, theirs and their faerie's.

    Here's one... examine your tank to see what you're up against for the run. The HP usually gives things away too. I usually tank but do the same for my healer and I generally do an initial small pull to see the capabilities of the party. Some get annoyed but nothing is more annoying than starting with a big pull only to wipe because your healer isn't geared to a sufficient level or the aoe spam drones on because DPS is too low.

      @kingpin3000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm far from an end game healer so I can only comment on what I do when I heal casually, but my advice is that there are some really good macros that allow you target the your target's target. This allows you to have your tank selected most of the time. Your healing will apply to the tank and your damage spells will hit whatever your tank is fighting. This combined with using the up and down on the d-pad means you can cycle to your dps as well.
      I'm sure high level healers will completely disagree with this tactic and there are some drawback, the main on being you can't see the monster's casting bar, but it works well enough for me.

      Using up and down on the d-pad to target allies and left and right (or X/A depending on which controller you use) to target enemies works pretty well for me. I also made a macro for an emergency raise that first casts Swiftcast and then attempts to raise every party member in order in case I really feel the pressure to bring someone up quick without thinking too much about it.

      hey, PS4 healer here! assuming it happens some of the time, there are some instances where you can’t immediately revive someone once they die (for example, if they fall off a platform - their name will be greyed out for a few seconds, and won’t be targetable at all until they reappear on the field again).
      it can potentially also be a range issue, which can be fixed by just getting near them first before trying to target. I may be able to think up more solutions by knowing what your settings are, so if you don’t mind elaborating on them that’d be great!
      edit: as a sidenote, you can also totally practice reviving in the overworld by yoinking a friend along, have them switch to a super low level class (like a crafter/gatherer), and let them fight some monster. then when they die, try to see if your targeting + revive works!

    I have about 3000 hours in game so far. I started when ARR hit PS4 but stopped before HW because it was my first MMO and I rolled a PLD and got kicked from quite a few dungeons. Fast forward to Christmas 2019 I finally built a beast of a PC cause I wanted to get away from consoles. The first game I downloaded was FF XIV. I still had major Tankxiety so I rolled DPS. played through all the expansions and decided to level up other jobs. I REALLY wanted to start a tank class but was terrified! I watched a WTG video where they talked about tankxiety and how to get over it. Their advice was to sack up and get over yourself! I rolled a PLD and maxed it grinding dungeons, and you know what? It was no where near as bad as my anxiety was making me believe. I figured after that I'd roll a WHM. Same thing!
