So as part of our £15,000 EV challenge series (each Monday) in this episode we look a bit closer in detail at the specs and exactly what spec £15,000 buys you.
Surprisingly there are some items amongst these cars that even my Porsche Taycan and Tesla don’t have! What the hell, I mean a £120k Taycan doesn’t have some of the standard spec of these cars (unless you option it for even more money!).
Each has sat nav, parking cameras, cruise control, Bluetooth and more…
See our detailed review on the specs and comparisons with these 3 electric vehicles for £15,0000
    Hyundai Ioniq 28kwh
    Nissan leave 30kwh Telna 6.6kw
    Renault Zoe ZE40
The Zoe is much newer and lower mileage than the other two. Why? Well it’s a lease battery. That’s a very positive thing for many and means a very new car can be bought for a very sensible price. It has the best range by far.
How far do they really go? Well in our first video we did a range test with urban and mixed driving.
Coming soon we have episodes for practicality and motorway range.
So stay subscribed for more coming next week!

Really nice video! And really interesting cars, especially the Hyundai. It's worth mentioning that later 38 kWh Ioniqs had issues with rapid charging being really not fast at all - the 28 kWh is actually faster in a 1000 km race, provided it has chargers along the way!
Can't wait for the practicality review :)
BTW, I've done some really long trips in the Leaf - those seats are NOT comfortable over a longer period. They're really nice and cushy around town, but on a highway, they just don't give enough support. By the 2nd charging stop, I was grateful every time I saw a charger, because it meant a while away from these seats.

20:24 I've been through that recently, and yes. I got a second hand Renault Zoe, with the battery being leased by the previous owner. We asked Renault if we could buy that battery, they gave us a price (which depends on the battery's age and kilometers) and that's it.
Also keep in mind that newer Zoes don't give the option of leasing the battery anymore. It was too complicated to manage

FYI - Infinity Audio was an American speaker manufacturer formed in the late 1960's that produced some very innovative, high end HiFi speakers. They eventually became more mass marker after one of the two founders left the company and were swallowed up by Harmon-Kardon who were in turn swallowed by Samsung.

I had a Leaf 24kw Tekna and loved it for what I needed it for which was a 50 mile commute. Plugged in every night worked flawlessly. Also made a heated steering wheel and seats a must have for me on any future cars.
Since that I have had a new 2020 leaf 40kw and just recently replaced that with a model 3.
But my first leaf was fantastic for commuting. Monthly payments were less than the costs of the petrol I used before.
    Great video once again 👍

Your reviewing the lower spec Ioniq. I had one for three years, it is indeed a brilliant car. You forgot to mention that you can connect the cars sat nav to your mobile and the sat navigation will get live traffic and take you along the faster route, often better than Google maps in my experience.

Useful review banter and good seagull impressions. Zoe battery lease is a carry-over from earlier EV years when buyers were suspicious of battery durability and Renault saw an opportunity to reduce the purchase price for what was a pricy hatchback. Lease is a pain as it's linked to manual mileage, like many a lease car. Rear seats are ok for nippers, but a source of discomfort for adults. Lack of DC charging is a serious disadvantage. Go Ioniq every time.

    • @swecreations

I am running a 24Kwh Leaf as my car & it dates from 2015 .
I have owned it just over a year & what a brilliant car it is .
It’s reliable, Zippy when needed & suits my needs perfectly.
Mine also is Tekna Trim , I have improved the battery degradation using a PAYG Rapid charger at least once a month to balance the cells out up to 100% charge .
If the car continues the way it does and is doing it could become my longest ever owned car purchase 😀

I was holding my breath and praying that the marker pen Joe was using to 'install' his rear-parking sensors was just a white-board pen... it's SO easy to accidentally pick up a permanent marker...!! PHEW...!
Being a bit of a details kinda guy, I absolutely loved this 2nd £15k EV video - great work.
When people rant about how "EVs are WAY more expensive to buy than an ICE car", they're often inadvertently comparing a base-spec ICE version with an EV.
When you add just the auto-gearbox and Sat Nav to an ICE car, the price jumps up significantly.
But, most of all, what this excellent video goes to show is that, EV motoring can be affordable.
Looking at brand new cars, £15k only gets you in to entry-level city cars like the Kia Picanto, Skoda Fabia and VW Up! - all perfectly lovely cars in their own right, but certainly not family-sized.
These 3 could quite easily cover 99% of a family's day-to-day needs - all with exceptionally cheap 'running' costs.
Always love your videos, guys...! 😎

You can buy the battery outright FYI, it costs a fixed amount based off the age of the car, and they subtract a set amount every year. For my 2014 Zoe that is 1.8K for example, closer to 2.5k for a 2017 41kwh one.
If you have any questions on it I'd be happy to answer them, personally I'm very happy with it, it accelerates like a rocket off the line and handles well, has great efficiency and surprisingly comfortable both in the front and rear seat with a big boot. Managed to get 2 big leather armchairs in it with the seats folded, so it really has surprising amounts of space for how small it looks on the outside.

Being located in Canada, my judgement is a bit biased. Leafs (Leaves?) have a reputation for not doing well in our colder winters and Renaults aren't available here at all. I've been driving a 2017 Ioniq EV though the last five winters and I'm still in love with it. The top of the line spec. has even more bells and whistles than what you showed off here.

Useful and fun video thanks. Will those parking sensors retrofit on any car? :-) I think the Ioniq stands out in this company - none are 'lookers' to me, but it would be my choice. I guess Renault will give up on the battery lease when the cost of claims outweiighs the income from rental.

I have a 2013 Leaf and a 2021 Model 3. I couldn't care less that the Leaf has a sunglasses holder and the Model 3 doesn't. What I DO wish the M3 had that the Leaf has is the top down 360 degree camera view. There's something about the M3, large turning circle, wheels right in the corners that makes it the hardest car I have ever owned when it comes to parking - I've even curbed a wheel! In 40 plus years of driving it's the only car I have done this in.
C'mon Elon, the car has the cameras, it's just a matter of writing some software to make it happen. After all you added the blind spot cameras in a software update when Hyundai/Kia came out with theirs. Not that it's at all useful being located at the bottom corner of the central screen...

On the Hyundai, you can take the car to a complete stop by holding the pull on the left hand paddle, EDIT this may be only for the Kona onwards.
We find the sunglasses holder is an ideal place to keep your RFID cards!
Top spec on the early Hyundai & Kia EV models.
TBF the Leaf looks good in red, even with the toad like headlights! Just realised, never even sat in MK1 leaf.
Those single switch heated seats would cause so many "discussions" between couples, its bad enough with the home heating thermostat.
Don't forget the Zoe Q models can charge upto 43kw AC, like on the Twizzy, people can buy out their battery lease on Zoes.

I’d be interested to see how it fares on the long range test. Can’t say I’ve ever been a leaf fan over all as they too were not brilliant range wise and defo not a Zoe fan. Impressive on one level range wise but they are not to my taste. Plus they are supposed to be awkward when it comes to charging with that different charge port to many other cars.

    • @jonathantaylor1998
      @jonathantaylor1998 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It all comes down to your daily circumstances, though, doesn't it.
All these 3 will do 100+ miles on a charge, so providing your family's journeys are less than 100 miles per day, then, yes, of course these 3 will all work - you simply plug in every night to wake up to another 100+ miles of charge.
Do that on an EV-specific electricity tariff and you're talking 100 miles for about £1.50, which is around 1/10th the cost compared to a 50mpg petrol/diesel car.
We ran a 30kWh Leaf for over 2 years and, for 99% of the time, it did our daily journeys just fine.
We even did a few 200 mile holiday trips down south - it just takes a little forward-thinking planning, but we had no issues whatsoever.
Overall, I reckon occasional 1% longer-distance journey planning is well worth the other 99% of cheap, relaxing and environmentally-conscious times 😎

Enjoyed the video, and I think a Hyundai Ioniq would be perfect for a family car for my wife, but where did you find the Hyundai for under £15k? Are the 2017 models rare or does being in the trade help? Cheapest on Autotrader and Ebay I could find was £16,500, but 2018 with over 80k miles.

I think you are overselling the Hyundai. A friend of mine bought one (28kWh edition) and he is very satisfied, it is very efficient and drives easily 10 km/kWh he says, I am not sure it is true but he is very happy

You can do 10 km/kWh if you try really hard to 'hypermile'. I'm averaging 5.3 mi/kWh at the moment (about 8.5 km/kWh) driving normally.

I heard that the 40kwh Zoe had the 52kwh battery in it, but you can only access the 40kwh. Any truth to that and if so, anyone know if there's a way to access the extra? Might be worth getting the 40kwh as the 52kwh has no curtain airbags and therefore a rubbish NCAP!?
The Ioniq is probably the best but hopefully there'll be a test of its battery cooling (fan not liquid) and slower charging when warm! But probably still the best car here!

It's an unfair test, the Leaf 40 should have been included because the Ioniq 28 (well, OK it's a 30 really) will easily beat a Leaf 30 :)
Ioniq is the car Nissan could have built (in 2017) if they'd learnt anything from the Leaf 1. Guess company politics must have got in the way.

A leaf 40 for £15k..? No, not really. That’s the title

You forgot to mention the Ncap rating of zero for the Zoe, this is a family car review.

    • @spikebmth
      @spikebmth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

incorrect, the Zoe40 featured has 5 stars, it's the 2021 Zoe50 that had zero stars because they no longer fit side airbags or collision avoidance, hence failed the upgraded testing criteria.

That only applies to the newer facelift version of the Zoe (52kwh) not the one they were showing with 40kwh
