I’ve made a note to punish myself psychologically for not playing this game until last year. Jak X may be one of the best racing games I’ve ever played. Sure, some cars may feel slightly more slippery than others, -but damn does that learning curve feel rewarding when you just manage to get to that finish line in first place, with someone on your tail (yeah the racer A.I. in this game is no joke).
One more reason that people nowadays don't really appreciate is the split screen local versus mode. It was so much fun going home after school with your friends and competing against each other. Honestly I miss this kind of games since most of them are moved to being online only (looking at you need for speed) Same reason with mario kart but Jak X always felt a bit more brutal and we like that more.
I think this might be my favorite video of yours so far. I played Jak X more than any other Jak game in the series. I think a lot of that came from racing against my brother/sister. We always had a blast and it wasn't something we could do with the previous entries. I very much agree about the cars being the same though, and always found the upgrade system did push you to stick to one car while the game yeets new cars at you every 20 minutes. Also wanna give a quick shout-out to the music in this game. Nothing like getting blown up to a banger. Great video!
Favourite vid? Let’s go dude! Yeah so many of these old games get so tied to memories, especially anything with split screen (I have such vivid memories of og battlefront and even aoe with some special friends). Glad you enjoyed it mate!
I love this game. There was a glitch that corrupted my saved data so I played it without a memory card. I could get to the third set of races by bed time.
That my friend, is dedication. Isn’t it crazy that gamers will never know again the stress of not being able to save a game? Also fun fact, that glitch was widespread and still impacts the unpatched emulator version of Jak X to this day
Honestly, I was OBSESSED with this game back in the day. I unlocked everything, including the hidden stuff and practically daily used the online mode. Sadly the game quickly died after the PS3 released, only a year later there was nobody online anymore. Jak X is severely underappreciated, its easily one of the best arcade racers ever made. I just wish we could see a modern version of it, or arcade racer in general.
*Doesn’t upload for 12 days* *Comes back with the best video yet* The Return of the King. And I gotta ask: How’d you get MK64 to look so fucking beautiful? Straight up mesmerizing.
Bro thanks so much dude, I really appreciate that! I kept getting stuck on the script and got some YT fatigue which is why it’s so late, but back at it now! For MK64, it’s using a texture pack mod for the game running on project 64. If you’re keen and use emulators yourself, here’s the link for the one I used here github.com/AndratVA/Mario-Kart-64-HD
It definitely feels like going back to my roots (even if I didn’t have the time for any memes in this one). Glad I was able to bring it back up for you again!
Amazing video! I'm playing this right now. I'm just about to do the Red Eco Cup! I just recently beat Ratchet: Deadlocked with my twin brother. We've been finishing the old games we used to play together. Next is Sly Cooper!
I personally think that Deadlocked had a pretty strong story, and really tied itself into the anti commercialism commentary the previous 3 games tried to do. Jak X has some of that, what with GT Blitz being a sleazy show host that cared more about ratings and money than anything else, (before the twist reveal at the end obviously). I love both games equally and personally, are some of my favourite games of all time! Im happy to see that people are still talking about this title, despite it getting kinda swept under the rug as time went on. Also i really wish that multiplayer was an option for the PS4 release of Jak X :(
I absolutely adore this game, one of all time favourites from my childhood. And dare I say it next to mario kart 64 it has one of the best battle modes in a kart racer ever. No gimmicks, just pure item based carnage
Brooo jak 3 is great absolutely recommend it. Lost frontier not so much, still would like to see a video on that game too by HGG, to see what he thinks about it(also would like to see a video on Daxter if he hasn't already did that, I loved that game, Daxter is the man).
I've played them all they all have their moments but story wise lost frontier just doesn't make much sense, and honestly while most people didn't like it, I thought taking to the sky in a jak game and seeing the layout of where you are was cool.
This was an absolutely wonderful game I just finished it a few days ago and I am still obsessed with the speedy death race game loop as i did when i was a wee lad. Absolutely underrated as hell
Agree, definitely still holds up even though it didn’t compete with the big kart racers at the time. I think a great one to jump in and do a few racers now and again, honestly same as how I approach Mario kart these days actually
It'd be nice if we got a PC port of this too.. think of modded tracks..lol, or shoot the big thing I hope happens is in Jak 2-3 we get cutscene models in gameplay
I don't think the parallels are all that strong to Deadlocked. Rather it's much more like Crash, Naughty dog's previous series. 3 platforming games with a racing game to finish them off. Pretty straightforward. Also the vehicles behave way different from one another, and you can tell which vehicles excel in each type of event. Narrowing Down Race track levels and arena levels really isn't an accurate representation either. Death Races are not like normal racing, that's like saying burnout has the same gameplay as Gran Turismo, the way you drive is wildly different. It fundamentally changes the nature of how you drive. Even something like time Trials and races in CTR are really very different styles of play. I wouldn't call Jak X Kart Racing in the first place either it's more akin to Twisted Metal, Blur, full Auto, Wreckfest, and I'd call it as the title suggests Combat Racing.
Thanks for the vid, have been playing jak x and got stuck because of the repettitiveness but I agree it does have a pretty good story for what I've seen so far, but the ps4 port is either stuck at 30 fps or dropping way too frequently I tried emulating it but I had problems with frames and my game crashed almost every time I saved. I'll gave to get it for ps2 again one day I guess, or maybe I'll get a pc port before then.
Thanks again for watching my guy! Yeah, I have the PS4 version but I opted to just emulate for this video which is why there is so much weird glitching and artifacts across the screen. I think for me, this is a game I would happily go back to and play it in bursts, but I probably burnt myself out doing it in a single sitting which definitely might have informed my view on it overall
@@HowGoodGames no prob at, all man, any tips for emulation, the crashing when I saved was terrible, mostly because it always happened right before it saved, so I had to play the whole track over, adding to the repetitive expirience and hope it doesn't crash again. I used pcsx2.
@@michaelstaton1999 Yeah I did the same, there if you search for the game there is a PCSX2 wiki page that includes setting info as well as sometimes fixes. Checking on their led me to a patch for this issue (apparently the saving glitch was something that happened on original ps2's, someone in the comments mentioned it used to happen to them and corrupted their memory card) which you can load as a cheat. I found when you boot up the game the first time it tries to create a profile and save and then freezes, but then closing it down and restarting would let you load the save. Basically from there though, I mainly used save states and it was fine. Long reply but hopefully it helps!
@@HowGoodGames thanks didn't even think about save states, I'll have to find the shortcut key for that, so I can do it before I win a race, or it goes to the next cutscene. It all good I'm long winded too sometimes.
Bro I don't get the comparisons ur making with Mario Kart, Jak X never striked me as a kart racer to be honest because it never felt like an arcade-style go-kart racing kids-oriented game, u could easily compare the game to the Twisted Metal series because it's a vehicular combat racer that's about the destruction and sport to race to the death which both Jak 3 and Jak X featured buggies with weapons
Soundtrack for this game is UNDEFEATED I really think naughty dog didn’t mean to make such a banger of a game it’s ridiculously face paced n it’s exactly like death race lol what a classic, although it’s considered a spin off I’ve always considered it a legitimate sequel, how is it not so many characters returning from past games and the story is actually pretty decent it reeks EDGE 😂😂😂 I mean it is called Jak X-treeeeme 😂😂😂
Ok I really didn't realize the parallels between Jak X and Deadlocked after all these years 🤯 nice find!!
Thanks mate!
Still has some of the best music in a racer till this day, ancient ftw!
And nice parallel to deadlocked/gladiator, personally my favourite R&C game
