  • It's time to tackle one of our most common calls in both the tech and product departments here at Wells. The GM vent solenoid for the mid 2000's trucks and SUV's! In this video we should you some quick testing procedures as well as how to instal it. Enjoy!

    1:54 mark, test just like I do with my crack pipe? Zip tie connector clip fix to the rescue. Eric O. never taught me that one, nice tip! haha Good job Mike and Adam.

      Agreed and when I got the Pico or took some crash classes it was definitely information overlaod but amazing what I retained.

      Information overload is great if you are able apply it right away. I sometimes find it hard to apply right away, then I lose a bunch. That's why I always write notes in the book. TH-cam makes it easy though, you just go re-watch the video!

    Did the zip tie, different configuration but it is done on 03 Trailblazer...question. The solenoid tested good but have a p0440, changed vent valve, purge valve, gas cap...WHAT DID I MISS? thnx!

      Hey Dusty, a P0440 simply says there's a "leak" in the system. Could be anything from a bad hose to a bad fuel tank. Best bet would be to smoke test it. Find where that leak is coming from.

    Very timely subject, getting a chronic po 455 code or a ck gas cap message from a 04 malibu 6 cyl . Can a bad vent sol set these codes. Had a new gm cap for almost a yr , still getting codes , thanks for excellent thorough videos

      Hey Mark, perfect timing :) It is possible that your vent solenoid is causing the code. Vent's are relatively common on the older Malibus. Pull it off, give it power and ground, and see if you can blow through it. If it's sealed, then it's ok. If you can blow through it, replace it!

    Do you got a video covering p0447. I got a 2016 kia rio LX. Looked up code on AutoMate...
    1. Poor connection
    2. Open or short in power circuit
    3. Open or short in control circuit
    4. CCV
    5. ECM
    Do you got a video that addresses 2 and 3? Thank you.

      Hey Padrote, I don't think I have a video specifically showing that. Basically you would want to test for your power in and make sure the PCM is grounding it as it's supposed to.

      James, GREAT question! I see i've got you thinking! Alright, so let's look at the system. The VENT solenoid acts as the "back door" or the final sealing point before fresh air. In front of that vent is the canister. Now, under normal operation and conditions the canister should never allow vapors to flow out of it and reach our vent solenoid. Therefore, we should never end up with fuel vapor in our vent line. The vapors should be filtered out inside the canister and only filtered air should be in that piece of hose.

    Hello Mike.Would a restricted vent valve overload its driver and cause it to fail from too much current draw?

      Hi Marcus, it's dependent on how the vent fails. If it overheats and internal shorts its windings...then yes, it could increase it's amp draw and burn out the driver. Time and heat shorting the windings is key. The restriction won't immediately cause an amp draw.

    Them lines are getting rusty crusty. Do these all the time pretty common that dirt gets packed in the old ones pretty severely.

      Hey Mike, good ole' Wisconsin winters.....rust...sometimes can be the bane of my existence haha! It was definitely a decent band-aid from the GM engineers...but my question is, if we are running hose to the above the transmission, why not run it 5 more feet and feed it into the filtered side of the air box? Then we would never see issues again right???
