    The best mechanic's are the ones that take the time to diagnose without jumping to immediate replacement of parts. Fix it right the first time and word of mouth from customers will keep you in business forever. Thanks for your conscientious quality.

      There are more great techs out there than doctors are. If all the techs were like most doctors, you'd see wheels and parts falling off cars. But yes, there are idiot techs also.

    I know that this video is some 5 years old now but still. You did a great job diagnosing and repairing this fault. Your last statement about corrosion from aging and environmental exposure let alone the flexing is spot on. One more thing you should do however to address the corrosion at the connector is to apply some dielectric grease to the pins in the connector and to the backside where the wires are crimped to the sockets. Even some water proof shrink tubing will help as well.

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Jim, thanks a ton! You're right, a little dielectric in the connector would be a great move.

    Absolutely FANTASTIC and in depth video. I knew I had an issue with one of the speed sensors, and have replaced both cables on GM's before based on other videos. Replaced them right to the ABS module. I extend the new harness to the module with some old outdoor extension cord. take the remainder of the sketchy GM harness right out of the equation all together. However, I am ashamed to say, that as a former mechanic, I would have never thought to jump from one side to the other to verify, absolutely, the problem. I've done that a lot with other components, speakers, lights, etc. But never thought to do it with the wheel speed sensors. Genius sir!

    Excellent video! This is the procedure I was going to perform to diagnose my 2014 Impala Limited, but I really liked the harness switch trick you did. Well done! It boggles my mind how many people I've seen on various forums that have gone into a dealership, only to have the hub/sensor replaced, and then driving off and having the same problem recur.

      its420erik exactly what I’m going through right now. Just replaced front left hub bearing and rear left . My abs light was on it’s off right now but my brake flutters and feel /sense a spring like noise / vibration. I took my car back only to have it returned with the same issue. This issue has cost me $424.13 so far taking it back tomorrow feeling pretty frustrated! Any advice?

    Great job Mike. A month ago I did basically the exact same as you just did but on an 06 montana minivan. No relevant codes.. Live data to the rescue. Saw the dropouts on drivers front wheel. Set up my cheap little hantek scope right beside my maxidas and could see the bearing respond but the abs module not seeing it. The problem was the exact same yellow wire inside the connector as yours. What a coincidence. As a DIYer it was pretty satisfying to have found and fixed the problem without throwing a bearing at it and still tracking down the problem afterwards. I owe it all to the guys like yourself who are teaching those of us who enjoy learning your craft. All the best Mike.

      Hey Mike! Thanks man! Glad you were able to fix it right the first time! Nothing better than proving it before installing parts. Weird it was the yellow wire again...I wonder if it's always the yellow wire...hmmmm...gotta be some fun theory behind why the yellow wire gets it but the blue doesn't...that's a topic for another time :)

  • @jeanie1034
    @jeanie1034 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video (posted years ago, but still relevant)! One big factor that the viewer should consider before he attempts this repair is whether he has a full sized lift for the car! It would have been a nightmare to try this fix lying on your back under the car on a floor creeper! In some cases with a different harness configuration you could do the job horizontally by jacking the car and pulling off each wheel, but even that way your clever diagnostic trick of cross wiring adjacent sensors would still be hard to do!
    In any case, nice work and great attitude about doing a quality, accurate job -- applies even if its just a DIY project not for hire!

    Great video and diagnosis! The only thing that I didn't like is the very last picture of the corroded wire. That is not normal at all, even for an older vehicle. It's a sure way to have more problems in the future. The corrosion is there and it's going to continue to corrode. One look at that would tell me to replace the entire cable. Speaking from an electronics tech with 40 years experience, and I also help a friend who runs a garage when he has electrical problems. Back to the good, you were very very thorough and many mechanics would have spliced the first broken connection and test drive to find they still have a problem. You got it right the first time and I commend you for that.

    I'm having a similar issue. I have a 2000 Alero and in the past two weeks the problem started. Prior to this, just after getting my car, it was raining and suddenly my service vehicle soon, ABS, and trac off lights came on. I thought little of it. Then it this winter it would disable ABS and traction control in snowstorms (I live in Minnesota). Thanks for the thorough diagnosis testing. I'll be freerzing my buns off (as long as it isn't snowing) tomorrow on the cold concrete slab that I park my car on (even though it's April 7th tomorrow) checking this.

    Very professional, I wish you were in my city, heres a problem I can't seem to get a solution too. 2009 Chevy Express 1500, 2wd, with Stabilitrac. Upon acceleration from a stop it feels like resistance from the rear end, as if someone gently hits the vehicle from behind sometimes, not always. Sometimes the stabilitrac light flashes when this happens. The button on the dash no longer disengages stabilitrac. I noticed this starting 3 years ago when I would get stuck in snow, prior to that never got stuck in even the deepest snow, any ideas, thankyou.

    excellent video. A week ago I got a C1233 (open/short right front). hubs are Timken and relatively new. It is winter. yesterday was below 0°C so there was no water. No ABS light. The day before it was above 0°C and there was water. Light was on. Connected scanner and drove. Wheel speed was being reported by all sensors and were accurate. With scanner I could clear code and it came back almost immediately. Repeated this process a few times. No way to "prove it". Would you recommend replacing wire harness for peace of mind. Bonus: no soldering required since there is a connector at both ends. Best price for harness is $105US + shipping. Car is '97 regal. I take good care of car even though this is a winter only car.

      I think I figured it out. I pulled the wheel off today and the abs sensor wire from the hub clips onto a mount/extension on the backing plate. Thanks to excessive road salt, the mount broke off of the backing plate and the sensor wires were moving around instead of staying in place. The white insulator that covers the wires has been compromised so I suspect the wires inside have been compromised. Will be ordering new sensor wire and soldering it onto the old wire. Hoping for some warmer weather since I will be doing it on my driveway.

    That car is nice for living in Minnesota. Fairly clean frame. :) Excellent job, i've been there, done that. Right before you found the corrosion in the connector, i saw an intermittent speed signal when you were spinning the wheels. Corrosion can cause intermittent problems, and i'd bet that there is a little corrosion in the right side connector, as you said that there was a code set for the right side. It's not enough right now to really be causing an issue that you can actually see. But, you will see the right side setting the code more often as time passes.

      Hey David, good ole' northern winters huh? Does Minnesota use as much salt on the roads as we do here in Wi? Thanks! Yeh the signal did pop back for just a second. You are probably right, the right side will eventually fail down the road. It really is inevitable. Thanks for watching!

      Tried to answer earlier today on my phone, but for some reason my comment was not getting published. I'd say yep, our northern winters can be brutal. I'm in Michigan, and they salt the roads heavily, at least here in metro Detroit.

    This was immensely helpful to me, especially the use of the alternate side harness to identify what was really wrong with my ABS sensor system on that side. After replacing the harness, I examined the old one and found a broken wire, though the insulation was undamaged.

    Great video! I got one for you, I have never had an issue with my ABS or the ABS & Brake lights until the mechanic changed the speed sensors on both front wheels ! Now the ABS & Brake lights will not go off, IF we reset them & turn them off the ABS starts stuttering each time I need to hit the brakes hard . However IF we turn the lights back ON the brakes work perfect.. Have you ever heard of this ?
    One other thing, why not just put a new harness in instead of soldering ? Cost ??

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey John, thanks for watching! When the ABS light is on ABS brakes on not functioning. When you shut the light off they are working. The stuttering you are feeling is the ABS brakes engaging. You could have a sensor signal dropping out due to an air gap issue? Look for one of my recent videos on GM ABS. I describe this exact failure. The reason why this didn't get a whole harness is because there is no junction point. The wire runs allll the way back to the ABS module. Some vehicles have a jumper harness that you can replace. That is the best fix.

      @@GoTechTraining Thanks, do you have a link for that Video? I am having a hard time finding it..
      I just got back from another Certified Tech who had the correct scanner. not just a code reader . he was checking many fuses saying they are all communicating with what they are supposed to communicate with except the ABS Mod. He recommends me getting a refurbished mod & he will put it in, My problem now is how do I know for sure if it truly is the mod & not what your saying "You could have a sensor signal dropping out due to an air gap issue?" Appreciate your replies Thanks, I wish you all were in my area. You seem to really know what to do here !

    I have a 2004 GMC Canyon and I’m having some real issues with my Right Front ABS. What happened before I got the error is that my brakes are going out and I decided to replace ALL drums and discs with the help of my dad. We decided to start on the front right disc which does need to have a new disc out. Before we don’t know anything of how my vehicle work or where to unplug the ABS to take the whole thing out. So we went in blind, took the bolts off the wheel bearings but didn’t unplug the ABS. And as he does that the wire gives a resistance and couldn’t let go which messed with the sensor. The left side didn’t need a new disc by the way so that side is good. We run the computer diagnostics and it’s pointing to the Front Right ABS. I ordered a new ABS sensor (by itself) and we decided to take off the old sensor and replace it with the new. We got some sprays that was going to use to clean the wheel bearing to fit the sensor on very well. We unplug the battery for no false ABS readings, started on the whole replacement process, sprayed good on the bearings and put the sensor on once dried. After putting it all back together on my truck, with a new installed caliper, the ABS warning light went off which was a relief. Until, we took the truck on a test run for both caliper and ABS. When I press on the brakes my truck steering shudders to the left and veered my vehicle to the left which I knew something’s wrong. After a couple of brakes, the ABS light went on and the I P Brake lights went on. Now I ordered a full wheel bearing assembly with the sensor and it’s on its way over.
    My guess to what happened is that when we sprayed the old bearing to be put to use it messed with the sensor with the moisture or so. Could that be the problem to why my vehicle is acting that way?

    • @GoTechTraining
      @GoTechTraining  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's really hard for me to say what happened without seeing it and driving it. It could be related to the ABS system, it could also be a base brake system issue. Normally brakes get replaced in pairs.

    My Vauxhall/Opel once owned by GM now PSA. Went in for a service ..but I could feel a vibration or tap in my break pedal when I got it back driving at 20-30mph. It went back in and said couldn't find anything. But when I break hard my car slight pulls to the left. Now when I reach 30mph the vibration is very there and at 65mph the ABS light comes on.
    Any feedback greatly appreciated...
    I'm watching these videos to understand, so when I return, I'm asking right questions because one I don't wanna get ripped off and 2 I know if a job is going to be done properly.
    Thanks from UK.

      Hey Sunrise Wataha, thanks for watching! Sounds like a mechanical issue in the brakes. Maybe a caliper is hanging up and has caused the rotor to overheat and warp, leading to the pulsation you're feeling in the pedal.

(I did check it right at the hub like in the video even though it was new) If it is good that means the wiring is good and I should assume the ABS module is bad?

    Hi Mike , I have an intermittent problem on my 2006 Cadillac DTS. I see you answered a question from , just 3 days ago , so I'm going to ask you one today . This involves me going to MY Cadillac Dealer , $150 , " NO ANSWERE " diagnostics ! This is about this video , from Aug. 17, 2017 . My trouble is , code on dash , Service Break Assist / Traction Control ! Car will not restart with code ACTIVE ! I can wait for " auto rest" of system , and car will restart . Do to my age and need for car , I went for several WEEKS , before I went to Dealership . At Dealership , after a 1.5 Hr. hours ( on my car } , I was asked to talk to Mechanic " Tech" , and get His findings ! To my HORRER , as with your video , my trouble DIDN'T set a code in the Memory ! SO I was given no idea as to witch wheel , was cause of problem or WHAT , problem was !
    Mike , I don't know if "IT" impressed the Mechanic , when I explained {YOUR VIDEO} , and your SHOWING , memory of wheel fault , readouts , on a 2002 GM car ? So I paid my $150 , and was told , when code is set ( again ) , " Do NOT shut car off, and come to them , for an active readout" . Any thoughts on this ? Love your videos, Mike . Thank You !
