You can do the same thing with denatured alcohol. Protip: load it up in a spray bottle and give a *light* mist along the link of caulk you just laid down. Have a rag handy and wipe down the line, clean you hand, and continue. Not only will it not stick to your finger, but it also wont stick to anywhere the alcohol landed leaving you clean surrounding areas. A word of caution, work in small chunks (no more than a 2ft or so of section at a time, which is about the diameter of the mist spray output) due to the fact that alcohol is, after all, a solvent and itll make your caulk runny bcs its dissolving it partially. Its not an issue if you work fast and in small chunks bcs youre wiping it away as you work with your finger.
It's best to cover headlights with protective film while they're still clear to avoid hazing & discoloration. Now that they are made of stupid plastics instead of glass.
I did this to my car and it came out great! A few tips: 1. I was able to get the adhesive to come off after 10min in oven at 275F 2. Even at that temp, the head light melted where the plastic touched the oven rack. Instead, place a 2x4 or something below the headlight. 3. Wipe down the lens with rubbing alcohol and microfiber cloth first. 4. Use a plastic primer or spray paint that adheres specifically to plastic (I used Krylon Spraymaxx and it worked great) 5. Add all coats of primer/finish in one go so the each layer will adhere to each other, 10-15 min between coats, longer in humid environments. 6. Be extremely careful, I accidentally lightly bumped into my headlight cover and chipped it (I was able to epoxy it back on and sand/buff it back to new) The end result was WELL WORTH IT!!! My lights look amazing after painting them. Good job Rich
I would love to se wallmart selling a new kit of general use tools by Rich Rebuilds: a flat screwdriver, a kitchen knife. New improved version! now with a paperclip.
House hold silicone works perfectly fine. It is waterproof, will not harden, and will not crack. That bull shit about acetic acid is nonsense. They minute amount of HAc will not cause any issues. At least it has never caused me any issues when using it on headlights. We've used it to seal headlights after removing yellow/red reflectors, and to install angel eyes and light pipes, and there was never an issue.
Nice looks! Couple advices. You should sand plastic with 600 or 800grit sandpaper. Primer will stick much better then. You can buy headlight sealant. Remove old and lay down new, heat it and reassemble. It comes in rols. And when you open headlight (if the car is older age) check hid projector for burns. It can burn over time.
handy trick when smoothing silicone, use a cup or bowl of water to dip your finger in, keep your finger wet and it'll mould the sealant really well. works while wearing latex or rubber gloves too
I’m so confused 🤷♂️ where beige Tesla 1/4 flood one? And where black Tesla half flood one? Then now where grey primer Tesla come from? Your video list so confused.
I would never own a Tesla because the quality is bad. I find their vehicles ugly, and interior cheap looking. I only watch this channel because of Rich. He is the man, don’t tell me I cannot do something I’ll figure it out and save my money. That was me 43 years ago now I’m wealthy and most of my high school keeping up with the Joneses classmates and friends are in debt or broke. Keep doing you Rich, also try open mike somewhere, you are naturally funny.
A paint company should sponsor Rich and paint his Tesla since he has a full time job and he is riding around with a primer Tesla he doesn't have time or money to paint it. This is why Elon Musk doesn't want salvaged Tesla on the road looking like unfinished cars.
They look great. By the way, that Loctite S30 Polyurethane Sealant is the best adhesive that I have ever used for gluing flexible items together (such as shoe soles) even though it isn't advertised as an adhesive. The only downside is that it will need to cure about a week before putting the repaired item to use.
When I baked my headlights, the sealant inside was really old and hard. I recommend using butyl rubber (I think it's also called window sealant). It comes in a roll, and you just unwind it and lay it into the channel where the two pieces fit together. It's sort of like a less sticky gum until it is heated so it's super easy to work with. You can get it in grey or black as well!
In the past when I have done this, I preheated the oven, turned it off, then put my headlight in. The residual heat is usually good enough to soften the adhesive. If you keep oven on and the temp drops you might be in for a bad time when the heating element kicks on full blast.
For sealant recommend sikaflex 295 UV.... made specifically for glass and plastics, comes in black, easy clean with a lil mineral spirits/denatured alcohol. You can get it at most marine supply stores..

Rich, a little trick with silicone is to use a light spray of multi surface cleaner, I'm in the UK so not sure you call it the same there but basically it's a liquid soap based spray cleaner, this stops the silicon e sticking to your finger and so gets a better finish, yes even with gloves on!
