  • The Canon 80D was awesome, it was a great, mid level APS-C DSLR from Canon that gave great performance for photo and video but... that was 2016. So how does it hold up now in 2022? Is it still relevant? Does it still have anything to offer now? Let's talk about it.

I use the 80D professionally to shoot images and video and I’m a Top photographer from the U.K. now -based in California!

I spent 12 years with my first dslr ( rebel XTi ). The last 4 years have really been my maturing as a photographer because, I started doing more like street photography and learning a lot with it. I've basically pushed that camera as far as I could.
I just picked up a 80D with a 11-16mm F2.8 Tokina lense for $700 Canadian. An absolute deal imo. And is an insane upgrade for me. The 80D will definitely open many more doors for me.

I really don’t understand people’s obsession with 4k nowadays. For me it just means heavier files and harder to edit videos for not much of a difference in the average screen…

What I really don’t understand is the obsession with shooting over sampled 4K with a G-Master lens and then putting a pro-mist filter on it.

Agree. Most people don't even watch TH-cam on big screen. They just watch on the phone.

My Canon 80D is used. I bought mine 4 years ago from B&H here in NYC. It's been very good to me. But I do think of upgrading, but not to a mirrorless camera. I have my eyes set on a Canon 5DMIV. I want to stick with DSLR a bit longer since it's being unfairly phased out.

I remember saving up and buying my 80d a month later I was gifted an a6500 and I was mad I bought the 80d . I’ve compared the 1080p to justify it and even the 1080p of a higher quality.

Fair review. I've got one of these, and they were a real progression from 750D/70D. Dual Pix AF is much better, ISO is equivalent to the 5D III up to 3200. Where it falls down isn't just ISO over 3200, but dynamic range - there just isn't enough and it's a real limitation to canon DSLRs generally, alongside the lack of built in IS. All that said, it's a great little camera if you are looking for an upgrade from 18mp Canon models like the 1200/100/700D. You really see the difference in stills and video.

I got this in December 2017 and I'm packing it now for a trade-in tomorrow. It served me well and taught me a lot. Time to upgrade to a mirrorless full frame.

"As always" loved your video. Had actually bought a used 80D last year (from Park Cameras no less) rather than a system change to mirroless, for all the reasons you set out, and could not agree more. One question: in your esperience with the 80D what did you set your max ISO at? I'm using 1600 as I found 6400 was poor, but interested in your view. Many thanks.

Good comment - and a good, simple question. Iwas hoping to read @parkcameras’ response but I see he hasn’t responded after 5 months (to any comments in this video) so I won’t be subscribing to this channel

Coming from the 700d to the 40d now to the 80d in my experience ISO 1600 is acceptable but anything above that lacks details and is noisy. But when used in good light, the 80d is a ripper.

Considering an 80D vs a Panasonic GX95 because I have a few lenses for each mount. It’s a case of better IQ for stills and robust DSLR grip/handling vs 4K, peaking and IBIS from the Pany. It’s such a tough decision that I may just grab an old FF like the D600 or 6D and add a cheap video camera like the GX85 down the road. Photography is hard on a hobo budget. ;) Nice review, thanks.

What did you go with? The g95 is on sale with 12-60 for 697 usd I had the g95 and liked it. However I’m now focusing on older cameras

using Canon EF-S STM lenses with stabilization works great--no jell-o images from IBIS is a pleasure to shoot. Canon has been right about this for as long as I can remember. That is why they were reluctant to use IBIS and slow to adopt it. Plus, I think they hate the hybrid camera concept. Making one always entails compromises.

My first 2 Pro cameras I used was 80D - I own a C300 Mkiii now and also shoot on RED and Arri. I still have 1 80D - one was stollen I take my 80D on vacation for vlogs and photos and it’s still a GREAT camera. The video lacks a bit of dynamic range so sky does blow out but meh! For Vlogging they are still epic cameras

Canon are well built cameras in my experience, I bought the D600 kit way back around 2014 and mostly enjoyed it,tes low light images were very grainy almost upgraded to the 80D,then the 90D came out and was tempted, however I was also interested in full frame and just a few months ago I bought a new 6D mk2, now how does that hold up in 2022? I also bought a second hand Canon 400 mm F4 lens to go with it, and it works well although it's still not got the reach I would like for some of my bird photographs, perhaps I should have invested in a newer system ?

Got my beat up 80D free in a bundle with a Sigma 60-600 and have yet to really try it out. Wish I still had some of my old EF-S lenses, like that lightweight and noisy 55-250.

The b-roll of the 80d looks kinda naked without its eyecup! What did ya do with it? 😂 in fact, I bet you lost that lil eyepiece cover that chills on the strap for long exposures, didn't ya?

it would help if reviewers (particularly Millennials, et al) would have a reasonable discussion of something without using the word "perfect". There is ~ no ~ perfect camera, and if there ~ was ~ most Millennials could not afford it. Otherwise, the review was succinct and useful! Thank you!
