    I photographed a leopard with the 18 - 135mm usm kit lens because I didn't have a longer lens with me. The 32 megapixels saved me from any major quality loss and I wasn't uncomfortable to crop in 400% like I was with my previous 1200d with its 18mp sensor.
    The 90D is the best camera for the price. Period

  • @Captain-Cosmo

    Yes, I was hoping for a third generation 7D. This 90D still is absolutely awesome. Extremely versatile for both photo and video. I love the option of BOTH cropped and uncropped 1080 and 4K. If I'm doing a lot of video, I enjoy using a cage and a magnifying loupe eyecup for the rear LCD... better than any mirrorless EVF, and yet practically all of the mirrorless functionality in LiveView mode, too. One day, photographers who began on mirrorless are going to want to go back and experience the best that mirrored DSLRs had to offer. They're going to be looking at the 90D, the 5D Mark IV, the 6D Mark II and the 1D Marks II & III, each representing the very best -- and last -- of their respective classes.

    I really love having the 90D with the Sigma 60-600 lens. Surf photos/video at 250+ feet and I fill the frame without even hitting full zoom. I also use the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8, it's amazing for fire spinning at night, very impressed with it at 24fps@2000iso. So good in low light on 4k, the 1080 was a bit noisier (and accidental).

    • @andrewn.9072
      @andrewn.9072 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EEEBA1 When I was picking out a new DSLR for wildlife photography a couple of months ago, I had the same dilemma. For me, it was between the flagship crop sensor cameras for Canon and Nikon; the 90d and d500. After a lot of research, I found that the 90d had very little going for it compared to the nikon.
      The d500 shares its autofocus system with the d5, and its crazy quick and snappy. Also, even though the canon has a higher megapixel count, its noise performance is about 1-1.5 stops behind the nikon. You also get the full customization options within the menu that are only found in top of the line nikon cameras. To top it all off, the two cameras are in the same price range.
      Im not sure which camera models you are specifically looking at, but from everything I have gathered, nikon has done a fantastic job with all of their bodys, and has slightly edged canon out in recent years. With all that being said, you still can’t go wrong either way. All canon and nikon cameras are capable of taking great pictures if you use them correctly!
      Hope this helps!

    • @EEEBA1
      @EEEBA1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewn.9072 Yes it does help. Thank you.
      My only reason I was thinking Canon is because of their lens availability but I'm sure Nikon is about the same in that department?!
      I used to shoot with Canon years ago (zero equipment left because I gave it all away in 2013). So I'm starting all over again.
      I'm interested mainly in wild life, action and micro photography. I always wanted a Nikon camera and this is my chance :)

    • @andrewn.9072
      @andrewn.9072 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EEEBA1 I would say that in general Canon and Nikon’s lens assortment are on the same level. Since I almost exclusively shoot wildlife, I found that Nikon had a few lens options which could not be matched by canon. The 300mm pf, 200-500mm f5.6, and 500mm pf are all kind of in a class of their own. I currently use the 200-500 for my telephoto needs, and I have been thrilled with its performance, especially considering it’s price.
      I dont think you need to worry too much about lenses anyways; theres certainly a good enough selection for every style of photography.
      Nikon makes some great gear, so I think you’ll be happy with whatever you choose.
      Have fun!!

    Hey guys and gals, thanks so much for all the positive feedback and vibes. Just wanted to clear a few things up!
    Made a mistake, canon has a 1.6x crop factor, turning a 400mm into a 640mm... my bad!
    To those saying that the aperture gets multiplied yes that’s true, but it’s not as simple with telephotos. Telephoto lenses also use the law of compression. It’s a bit different from smaller focal lengths, calculation works but you will still be able to get desirable depth of field IF YOU ARE AT A HIGH FOCAL RANGE (meaning a f/5.6 won’t look like an f/9 when you shoot at 400mm because it will effectively be at 640mm).
    Of course you’re going to get more bokeh out of a full frame, but one should consider other factors!
    Hope this helps!

      Hi Spencer, would you mind telling me why you disagree? Maybe I can clear things up or cite sources.

    • @MrLogandm
      @MrLogandm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't effect the light coming in itll be a f5.6 still with bokeh looking more like an f8 but itll definitely depend highly on how close you are too your subject. If you're going for enviro portraits then itll look like the f8 when getting the trees and possibly lakes in there with the animals, however when filling the frame it should still blow the background out pretty decently

    • @tomaskoeck
      @tomaskoeck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      MrLogandm yes agreed!
      What people forget is that using a 640mm will blow out the backgrounds much more than a 400mm at the same distance based on the laws of compression. People get so hung up that aperture is the soul cause for blown out backgrounds, but like most things, it’s a combo of different factors.

    I've had my 90d since mid march .
    Then here in the uk we went into lockdown.
    I had a few regrets and wasn't sure I had done the right thing buying it .
    I have quite bad immunity issues . So initially I wasn't supposed to even go outside .
    As was told do not go outside .
    But I thought I can't stay in 24/7 .
    So started going just into our garden .
    I've been doing a side by side with my 60d and 760d .
    Had so much fun doing that .
    Anyhoo I've gradually learnt what a fantastic camera the 90d is .
    Shot so many subjects and not joking here . Our dogs . Insects . Flowers .
    My partner Samantha .
    Even planes deployed from the USA here .
    Got a few shots of the U2 on permanent detachment . .
    Also a squadron of B52 bombers here on exercise here at the mo .
    But the main thing is I'm having fun and have rediscovered my photo mojo .
    Great video .
    Thanks to TH-cam I've learnt even more about photography.

  • @psteffens
    @psteffens 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Nice review and I can understand a lot of the mentioned points, but the cropping thing at 2:06 is not exactly right. Yes, of course the focal length gets multiplied by the crop factor which results in a 640 mm tele FF-equivalent, but the aperture has to be multiplied as well, which ultumately results in a 640 mm f9. That being said, it effects only the amount of depth of field, not the amount of light falling onto the sensor, so this part is always a bit tricky.

    • @tomaskoeck
      @tomaskoeck  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spot on mate! What I didn’t communicate clearly was that with telephotos you get the law of compression which will help maintain the depth of field that most nature photographers want, even on a crop sensor body.

    • @SpencerLupul
      @SpencerLupul 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is right on that one. I’m not sure about the law of compression you mention. But no worries, on its own, a 640mm f9 is is just fine!

    • @tomaskoeck
      @tomaskoeck  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spencer Lupul he nailed it on the head! Compression is the term used to describe how telephoto lenses pull the background closer to the subject (depending on distances). That’s exactly why you can sometimes get away with shooting f/9. Because of the rule however, simple math conversions won’t always be accurate to the number given depending on the focal range.

    Great review. I have a 7d and plenty of EF glass so it looks like the perfect upgrade. Also I have large hands and some of the controls on mirrorless cameras are just too small to be practical. Smartphones went from big to pathetically small now back to bigger than ever (apart from the original phones in the 80s) so it will be interesting to see if cameras go the same way. Time will tell. I also love the 1.6 crop being a portrait and lifestyle shooter. I don't have to be overly close to the subject also don't do any serious landscape so medium wide angle is just fine. If I want more I'll let PS stitch a few together.

      @Pascal Steffens Correct on that, but because of physics and the laws of compression, using a telephoto will not render a f/5.6 into what appears to be an f/9. It’s not that simple of an equation unfortunately!

      tony northrup does a great video on that. I didn't buy it at first. i have a 7dmkii now and a 6dmkii and the same lenses produce different pictures because the crop factor affects field of view AND aperature. So much so that there is a learning curve going from crop to full frame...

      You can try it out yourself. 50mm f/1.8 APS-C looks virtually identical to 80mm f/2.8 full frame. This is why smartphones and compact cameras with f/1.8 apertures never quite looks the same despite focal length equivalents.

    Crop in with 4k does mostly Canon and Nikon.. a6100 is kind of inexpensive camera and does not crop in 4k. Panasonic g80/90 or 85/95 crops just a little. They are on sale often.. still 90D and M6 mark 2 are the better choises in Canon range

    Sony has very great glass, including a 100-400 mm and a 200-600 mm. The new crop sensors mirrorless bodies offer same and even better features. Better starting investing in mirrorless glass than using old glass that won't be as great on future cameras. Apparently Canon R5 has top of the league animal eye autofocus as well...

    I want to buy a new Canon-camera: after 7 years with the 650. That was a good camera. But Canon had the time to make these even more better. I saw the 90D and I was supprised from the reviews. But the "new generation" mirror-less from Canon, the EOS R and the other ones, is amazing too.
    Now I have to make a choice between the 90D or de EOS R.
    Do you think that the quality is almost the same. Only the EOS R makes no noise for nature-pictures or weddings. How "bad" is de 90D with the noise you make. I suppose it's possible to put the mirror in the camera open: especially when you make pictures in dark with a shootingtime for several seconds on a stativ of course.
    I am 60 years old and I live in Holland. My English is not perfect. But I need your opinion between the choice: 90D or de EOS R. Which is the best for pictures because I don't make a lot of video's.
    Or do you have suggestions for other TH-cam-reviews?

    • @tomaskoeck
      @tomaskoeck  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm it depends on what the camera will be primarily used for. I prefer the 90D for wildlife photography but you’ll get better results for weddings and portraits with the R because it’s full frame

    • @the_useless_photographer
      @the_useless_photographer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dont waste your money on the entry eos r, go straight for the eos R5 instead. The eos r was mainly a test camera so canon could get real world customer feedback, the R5 is an amazing machine, better than the r6 imo.

    Resolution is top notch. But the AF system is not as good as the Canon EOS 7D mark II for sports and wildlife. You'll get less shots in focus. And comparing it to the Canon 1DX mark II is a little too optimistic.

    • @stanimal8
      @stanimal8 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 90D focuses amazing well in live view, even some of my older glass that I couldn't fully dial in using micro focus adjustments seem nail focus in live view, but sadly my old eyes just can't see the LCD screen up close. So for me, live view works well on a tripod, but fairly useless for handholding with any heavier/telephoto lenses.
      Also been using the R6 for a few months, focus great, but I still like the OVF better, maybe I should have gotten the R5 for the better EVF, but didn't really want to spend that much more.

    I wish Canon would release pro grade EF-S lenses. because beside the 'old' 17-50mm f/2.8, there not much choice. Yes there are plenty of EF lenses but, half the glass is not usable for APSC.
    Anyway, the 90D is on my radar
