I didn't realize how really good she looked in spite of her illness. And her sense of humor and comedic timing were unaffected by the cancer. She was such an amazing talent.
Gilda Radner was one of a kind. She had every gift an entertainer needed except for length of years. Even with just her eyes, she could convey more emotions than most people can with their whole bodies, her smile was infectious enough to make you laugh, and once she got to using the rest of her expressions and body moves you were hooked. Cancer took her much too soon at age 42, RIP sweetheart!
Seeing Gilda fills my heart with JOY. She was such a wonderful person and so, so clever and funny. Gilda was never mean. She was pure light. And a brilliant physical comedienne🤩
I was 10 going on 11 when this aired and I remember being so happy to see Gilda Radner because at 10 you always think "death" when you hear "cancer" yet here she was. And I remember laughing my head off when she said "Oh I had cancer...what did you have?" Even at that young age the bravery of that joke was not missed on me. It was the very first time I actually laughed at cancer. Gilda Radner was one of a kind. I will never forget her. She and Jane Curtain are the first people I remember from SNL. I was laughing at them before I was even in Kindergarten. 💪🏾
@@betagemslostmedia607 Considering how many smiles and bursts of laughter she selflessly gave millons of us, it's nice to know that we can return the favor, even a tiny bit.
I worked in a small bookstore when that title came out and I was so relieved when I unpacked that box of books because I thought she was out of the woods. Gilda was the big sister I never met (I think a lot of us feel that way). ❤️
Wow…I wasn’t even thinking about the fact that Garry is gone now too…two of the funniest people to ever grace the stage. I’m watching the Larry Sanders show again right now…that show is as funny as a sit-com gets.
I remember watching this when it came on and I had zero knowledge of who this was. Later on, when I watched an interview with Gary Shandling he said Gilda came to him and said, “I want you to help me make cancer funny.” 😆 Comedy is always ahead of its time.
I've never seen this before, so I'm delighted that you posted it! I love Gilda and watched everything (else) she was in. I laughed so hard at her mugging her way across stage behind Gary. So funny!
It was so joyful to see her pop up on this show. I was so surprised. You can tell how beloved she was. And then it came back. 😪 "Are you lookin into the camera...?" 😍😂
I stumbled upon this tonight. No, really, the truth is that I wanted to see Gilda's characters that are so beloved by all. Her signature line, "it's always something" is a motto we all should live by then we wouldn't be surprised when the bad happens. Well, we would then also be surprised when something tremendously great happens. So, the way I see it, it's a win-win situation. On the other hand, for those with the glass half empty, a lose-lose thing. Actually it's really one's perspective as we are all so different. That is my weak attempt to say, I really miss her! Forever in my heart and memory.
I was so happy to see her on this show and looked forward to seeing more of her. She died shortly after this episode aired and it really broke my heart.
SNL was an important part of my childhood- I lived for Saturday nights to see what Gilda and Co would come up with. When I found out that she died I sobbed from my soul-Gilda you were the big sister I never had. I miss you.
Coconut drop at 7:23 ~ I completely forgot this character. Did Gilda give her a name? So wonderful to see ‘her’ again in 2023. We have a Gilda’s house in Nashville which was a wonderful blessing while my wife was experiencing cancer. What a rare talent. I’m eternally happy that Gilda & Gene shared in each others brilliance.
I remember my mom being very sad about Gilda passing away, and in turn, it affected me in a lasting way, too. It's not lost on me that 22 yrs later my mom also died of ovarian cancer
It’s crazy the different experiences humans have. My mom died from alcoholism at 49, my best friend from a car wreck the next year. At 20 my daughter got cancer, thankfully still doing okay but it changes your view and opinion on it. There are so many ways stuff can happen that don’t affect most families that can destroy yours.
That "beautiful painting" at the very end is from the movie "Young Frankenstein". It's the smiling portrait of Viktor Frankenstein, from the moment when Friedrich Frankenstein (his grandson) accepts his legacy to carry on Viktor's work.
Gilda opened the door regarding ovarian cancer to the WORLD. Her humor, her ups and downs showed us here how brave she was to return that night. Loved her then, love her now. I had signs of ovarian cancer at the same time. Finally, I had a biopsy and it was not cancer, yet. However, she most likely saved several lives to get early diagnosis and treatment like I did.
Fun Fact: Gilda's back-and-forth with Garry after he catches her looking into the camera was all ad-libbed. You can tell because Gilda has trouble keeping a straight face, and even stifles a laugh when Garry says he''ll "bop" her. Their comedic timing was off-the-charts in this scene.
If it wasn’t for the writers strike later that year, Gilda would’ve hosted the season finale of Saturday Night Live; *_18 more years_* would pass before Julia Louis-Dreyfus became the first female alum to host.
@@denisesudell2538 If we're reunited with our loved ones, we'll be them all. 💞 Gene publically made a written-essay statement to People magazine, that he didn't say good-bye to her, as he watched her slip away over a few hours.
2 things about this This show was funny back in the day. It probably hasn’t aged well. But Fox was new at the time and this was a fresh idea. Gilda having the guts at the time to break a taboo and acknowledge her cancer like she did was tremendous in moving us forward to start openly talking about cancer.
If I’m not mistaken, it originally aired on Showtime, then was rebroadcast (days, weeks?) later on Fox. I guess they split the cost? I always liked this one more than his second one (which was like behind the scenes at the tonight show), which aired on HBO. Box were acclaimed, but the second was more acclaimed. Used to love the theme to this show (I believe by Randy Newman)
Two legends. What's heartbreaking is Gilda tried to get treatment for her cancer when it was in earlier stages but her mostly male doctors wrote off her concerns and she didn't get treatment until it was much worse. Who knows how much longer we could have had her if she could have gotten less sexist medical care.
If it wasn't for Gilda, I may not have had the biopsy done when I did. I was with cancer- "yet", I was told when I finally had the biopsy done. Her story most likely saved thousands of lives.
She had one pregnancy with Gene but she miscarried early on. It was then that the doctors discovered she also had ovarian cancer which ultimately killed her.
Gilda complained for almost a year about fatigue, pain in her upper legs, and swelling in her abdomen, but multiple doctors brushed it off as chronic fatigue syndrome or her just being a "high-strung, emotional, nervous girl". She had a family history of ovarian cancer, and her father died of a brain tumor when she was 14 as well. Still today, women are not taken seriously by their doctors.
She made it another 14 months God bless her. One of SNL's all-time best
One of comedy's all-time best.

Wow her comedic timing facial expressions it was funny laughing through the tears that it was her last performance❤

Just finished reading her book. Just loved her.
That look of triumph on her face & in her body language when she first comes thru the door is incredible. Just wish it could've lasted longer for her.

What lovely people. Both helped others in many quiet ways.
I read her book, “It’s Always Something,” and so much of it stuck with me. Makes me want to reread it.

She passed away in June 1989, well over a year after this episode aired on both Showtime and on FOX
Greatest female comedic performer of my lifetime. Sincerity comes through her performances like no one else.
I remember when this aired. I saw it. It was so sad that that was the last time I would see her in any TV appearances. Rest in peace to you both
She was such a breath of fresh air when she stepped onto any set

What a wonderful funny lady. I miss her so much
One of the moments I remember most about this show…Gilda was so JOYFUL! Loved her energy so much.
Love the final shot is the portrait of Gene Wilder, Gilda's husband (yes I know it's from Young Frankenstein )

Comedian Blake Clark (best known for Home Improvement and Boy Meets World) plays Gilda's male nurse
He was also in the film 50 first dates.

Gilda Radner & Gary Handling were comedy gold. RIP Gilda & Gary.🙏
Gilda was a giant talent and I'm glad to get to see her perform but I'm sad to think how much more she had to offer
This show was so groundbreaking that few people even got the premise!
