Actually, for the longest time, I wanted to maintain a clean Arch installation with no DE or even a WM. Of course, I caved eventually and installed KDE (which is spectacular these days), but for a while, all I used was Elinks. Spectacular.

@@racingbeats1493 he has the choice to put 7video a week or not, I've been watching and loving ltt for a while now, but the simple fact that a huge majority of their video has great quality doesn't mean I can't critisize a bad quality one. I get that they have to put a load of work into their video,.. but I'd rather have another video made slightly better and not have this one rather than having a literal 8mins video about a portable battery. It's an 8mid add for a dumb battery and there is nothing wrong with saying that.

At the end of the day don't go with a Mophie battery there are better options and more cheaper but still respectable brand like aukey Rav power and Anker. And if the reviews are good you can go with a sorta not really a brand it works for me

1. You can not measure battery drain by 100%->50% and then 50%->0%. Because of diffrent voltages the DC-DC converters work diffenrently. So the dropping is not linear..
2. At start of video you said that espacially macbooks are picky and then only test with the razer blade. Doesn't it work with the macbook?

@@CaveyMoth I have no problem with them doing paid ads - and I bet the battery bank is just fine. But they actually did a whole video about how they were going to do better with video titles. Linus sounded serious in the video. But we're not seeing that carry through. Some of the others he said escaped quality control, ok, that happens and nobody is perfect. But people who are literally willing to pay them with actual money to support their work told them this was a bad title a week ago, and they still went with it - and apparently they still "forgot" to make sure that the misleading title was clearly marked as a paid ad.
Why the crazy code words if they actually want to be transparent about what the videos are? Why call a paid ad spot a "showcase" instead of "paid ad"?
I'm not rage quitting floatplane or commenting to slag them - I'm happy to continue supporting my fellow Canadians, but it's frustrating when they seem unable to learn from mistakes (or perhaps they fail to acknowledge mistakes).
There is so much good, high quality content coming from this group of talented people that videos like this erode trust inordinately quickly.

edit: Since I'm afraid of ending up on the WAN show, I am not saying this should have been in the video. I am saying that the title is misleading about how informative the video will be. It is like saying extend your battery life by plugging in your laptop to the wall.

3 out of their last 4 videos have been sponsored showcases and NONE of them have been labeled as promised. The Colorful AIO showcase was still acceptable because it's just an unboxing with Linus's thoughts and benchmark numbers but these other two are absolutely insulting. Hell, the other two videos (Monday.com and Colorful PC still dont have showcase in the titles). My goodwill towards LTT only allows me to watch so many ads.

The Monday.com video says it's sponsored like twenty times in the video (to the point that people are joking about it in the comments there). I imagine they did that because showcase seems like an odd title for it since it's not a physical product or even a piece of software.
I could be remembering it wrong, but I think the thing Linus promised was that after the initial clickbait wave came in they'd retitle it to accurately reflect the content. As you can see, this one is now titled showcase.

If a manufacture is comfortable enough to let you guys put it through a full load they should let you share more data points.

Here's a tip for Switch owners looking to extend battery life on the cheap, specially for those not in the US that cannot get access to these regularly advertised brands without paying heavy taxes on top of them:
There's a chinese (HK based) external battery brand called Vinsic. Particularly one model that has Vinsic 20000mAh printed on top of the battery with a stripped cover on it, all dark grey, with a USB Type-C port on it, two regular USB 3 and one microUSB.
I've had this battery for a bit over a couple of years now. Used with my Switch since I bought it, 3 to 4 times a year during trips. Works pretty much like the Razer example on the video - the charge doesn't increase while using it, but rather the drain rate goes down substantially.
Other than that, it barely loses charge when not in use... sometimes I check it after a couple of months of not using it, it barely lost a percentage of charge (because I mainly use it only during trips). It has worked well with basically anything I threw at it, including my smartphone (OnePlus 3). It's not ultra super cheap like some other eBay batteries, but it's cheaper than most Mophies, Ravpower and other big brands known in the US, particularly if you don't live there.
I've gone through several external batteries over the years. I first bought one in local import shop for an arm and a leg, it was just plain shit, held little power, and the battery degraded in a couple of years 'till it was useless. The power leakage on that one was horrible too... a week without using the battery and it went from 100 to 0 per cent charge. Can't even remember the brand anymore, it had a retractable stand to prop smartphones and tablets on top. But this is old news... I had an iPad 2 on that time, so it must be at least 6 or 7 yrs old.
Then I got a Kingston branded external battery plus multi function travel router thing. That one had too small a battery, microUSB only. TravelMate or something was the product line I think. It worked half decent for all the stuff it was supposed to do according to advertisement, but the phone app was still half assed, and I think this type of product kinda died. I always marvel how no company so far managed to hit this nail in the head, as there are tons of photographers in need of a product like that.
Then I got a type of external battery shell that takes 18650 lithium batteries. I think the brand is TOMO or something similar. Bulky, not a horrible idea, but unfortunately where I live it's not only almost impossible to find good quality 18650 batteries, when you do they are extremely expensive. Like a single good one costing more than an entire external battery.
So it ends up making no sense at all. Might be a good option if you can find a reliable resource for recycled, tested 18650s (usually comes from older laptop batteries).
Finally, I got to this one from Vinsic, and it's been working super well for me. The only problem is that it was an eBay purchase. So you never know what you are really going to get, I guess. I think it has no USB-C PD, fast charging capabilities and fancy stuff like that, so forget about charging a laptop.
But it uses LiPo batteries (I opened it up to check internals), and I can't complain about it. Best one I've got so far. I don't even know if it has the full 20000mAh as advertised... but it must be pretty close considering how much I've used it to charge my smartphone and other devices multiple times before charge going out.
Oh, one problem - charging it is slow as heck. Doesn't bother me much though.
General problem with these external battery advertisements we see all over in TH-cam channels is that lots of people like myself don't actually have access to these brands. They either reach us at insanely marked up prices by importers, or don't reach us at all. Amazon, for instance, just plain does not ship any products of the big external battery brands like RavPower, Anker, Mophie, Jackery, Hootoo and others for countries like mine. So you gotta try your luck on the wild west eBay. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Will it actually work plugging in your laptop with lower power input? I tried using a 60w power adapter that requires 65w on my dell laptop and windows started complaining.
So, can it only output 15v 3a or also 20v 2.25a that should work with the more powerful and higher capacity laptops like the xps 15?
When usb pd came out there weren't any external batteries that could provide more than 15v, great to see stuff caught up.
I might be wrong, but I believe the test where you plugged the thing in to check how much would drain on the laptop from 50% was flawwed. As I understand it batteries and capacitors discharge on a curve, and discharge the higher percentage faster than the lower percentage (it's a LOG graph essentially). As that would suggest, everything 50% or below would discharge slower anyways, a more proper test would of had both starting at 100 and measuring time it takes to 50%.

This is true for voltage, however percent should correct for the log scale. 0%-50% should be the same anount of energy as 50%-100% (I say should because measuring battery power difficult and complex) I would be interested to see any other info you may have on the topic, though. It may vary by devices or something like that.
They should have tested 100% to 0%. For both with and without the battery pack.
Laptop batteries don't discharge linearly from 100% to 0%, so there extrapolated graphs are useless...
I feel like they were told by Mophie to fudge the numbers with their specified test or they only gave yourselves like half a day for the experiment stuff in this video.
Either way, this video's conclusions are disappointing and unreliable.
A bigger test range is better and a 0-100 test is not that hard to do. It could be that they think that 50-100 is a more normal use case?. I also agree that this video is well below their normal standards, even for product showcases.

The more common non-smartphone models are typically 30W (20V@1.5A) which isn't quite enough for mid level x86 platforms.

mmh, If your laptop has a dedicated GPU but also have a CPU that has Intel graphics, would it work to extend battery life (go without charging), if the Intel graphics driver was installed and use Nvidia to switch over to Intel graphics? For example, have a laptop with 3 hr lasting battery but with a dedicated GPU. Would Intel graphics on that laptop reduce power consumption from the dedicated GPU?

Nope. Depending on the specific battery, both types can be very unstable and cause fires and explosions. I would guess Li-ion are the more unstable ones, but both technologies are problematic. Just search TH-cam if you want evidence ;)
hey linus, sorry for bothering you, but i had a question about an idea i had a while ago.
i have these squirrel cage fans that i use to cool my room. they are strong, push a lot of air around, and can be tilted to most any angle.
What if i hooked up said fan to my computer? a nice big powerful fan like that sending a constant gust of wind into my pc would (in my limited knowledge) cool the pc off a bit better than the small fans that come with the computer. and many of these aren't terribly loud, so it probably wouldn't be that much of a distraction.

Do ANY of these batteries support pass-through charging? Because that's something that is really hard to find and I'll instantly buy one if they do. I have a really nice Anker pack, but if I plug it in to charge, anything plugged into it stops charging. That's dumb.

@@Trainboy1EJR Then I guess that's literally the only form of advertising they have. I worked there for two years and have never seen advertising on TV, heard on the radio, or had any appear on any websites.
@@Napa39 Have you ever looked in the back of a High School Year Book? A whole bunch of local businesses have ads in it. When the carnival comes to town, local shops have a table in the merchant tent, usually with free pens, pencils, refrigerator magnets, frisbees, chip clips, or bottle openers with that business's name on it. There are so many ways to advertise, the only limit is your imagination, or the law... I remember the Sony PSP had a grafiti marketing campaign that ended in a lawsuit.

I thought all Thunderbolt 3 laptops supported it. Edit, Ultrabook is what I'm thinking of. No actual *gaming laptop* is going to support TB3 charging.

Couldn't you also just use a regular Powerbank when your laptop can be charged via USB C?
No, that is the whole issue with this video, the power bank needs to have the PD (power delivery) feature. He says that it charges "some" laptops instead of explaining that it has to do with voltages and amperage. DP can be 12, 15, 18, or 20V and you need to know what the powerbank outputs in order to know if it charges your laptop.

Think about that one person you know, who you've told to just plug in an external drive for their backups, and when you come over after they fail you realize they took the cable, plugged the USB 3 type A port into the USB hub on the front of the drive, and then managed to fit the micro USB 3 port slanted into an HDMI port. Yeah, think about that person. Of course, if your laptop consumes power within the USB-PD ratings and uses USB-PD to charge and you could find a USB-PD compatible external battery that supports close to your laptop's rating, you can plug it in. It's obvious, it's physics, it's tech standards... but maybe, JUST maybe, given this video is an ad, it's not meant /just/ for the regular viewers? The viewers of this channel are different than most people. That doesn't make them less oblivious though, just oblivious about other things, such as the fact that they don't have to watch a video they clicked on to the end, they can just move on with their lives and not give people crap.
