  • We take a look at the Nice 1956 Ford Fairlane Engine that was refreshed at Last Chance Auto Restore.
The engine was leaking oil around the front and rear seals and other dry gaskets . It did not seem to have the power you would expect from a "Y Block" Ford Engine.
The heads were rebuilt and upgraded, new seals and gaskets were installed.
Upgraded the distributer to an electronic set up, sandblasted and powder coated numerous pieces.
The car now has more power, runs smoother and looks much nicer than before!
The standard non power front drums were replaced with a nice Power Front Disc Brake conversion kit. Stops great now!

The Y Block takes a lot of heat. I had 292 in my ‘59 Ford and my dad had a 312 in his ‘56 Merc. They were, in my memory, stone reliable.

Love that two-tone colour on the Vicky. That was the original colour scheme of my Vicky, which I've owned now since 1973, with a rebuilt 292 that has given me zero issues! Nice to see what you've done with your build.

So glad you kept it a Y blcok rather than stick a small block Chevy into it.

I have a 56 F100 with a 292/304. I went with an MSD distributor, and a Blue Thunder aluminum intake, which is improved over original, and accepts the wide base carburetor. I guess it depends on how original one wants it to appear. I forgot to mention, and maybe you already know, these perform much better with a 57 or later distributor, as the originals had no mechanical advance. The later distributor also requires the use of a compatible carburetor.

Did you oblong the oil passage hole from the block to the heads so the rockers got better oil flow?

Is 272’ 292, and 312 y block the same casting, and over bored, so to speak? Or over all” a different block?

Can you buy new parts for a 56?? Wear items like front end parts ect?? I know the Chevys you can get anything for them but I'm bored with Chevys. I want a old Ford but I'm afraid no parts are avalible for them

Oil pump shafts tend to break on y blocks if pump tight . Also the rocker oil probs. Just a caution make sure oil light works .🌟

Yep probably why my '57 threw a rod on the freeway back in 1976. I still remember that car.

Just picked up a 56 4 door Fairlaine barn find for my 12 year old son. Going to restore it with him and curious about which break kit you went with for the conversion? Was thinking of mustang II IFS, but if there’s a more “stock” kit out there, that would be awesome. Definitely going to be a budget build for the time being.

That's the way to keep your kid from being a "car guy". "Pick up" a 4-door Ford piece of shit you know nothing about and pretend you do as you "restore" it. Or at least make a giant fucking mess putting cart after cart after cart over that huge herd of horses from that "barn".
Pick a fucking project you might be able to "restore" in weeks instead of years. He's fucking 12.
