  • Part 1 of the camshaft, lifter, and timing set upgrade for the 292 Ford Y Block in the 1955 Ford Fairlane owned and operated by the Hot Rod Reverend. Find out more by visiting HotRodReverend.com. This first video includes the introduction, tips, and various video clips that are peculiar to the Y Block. It ends after the lifters have been held in position and the old camshaft removed. Part 2 will begin with the old lifters getting dropped out and the work advancing from there.

Good project for your TH-cam Chanel, especially when it's a y-block. Ford didn't make it easy, I guess they thought they would just run forever. With mushroom lifters and hollow push rods you would think the valve train might be a little lighter then some?

Have to admit, I've never heard of installing the mushroom lifters from the bottom, although it's possible, would be a royal pain in the ass, especially since a helper is needed. FYI., an OEM timing set(true roller), for a heavy duty truck application is available.

I am right in the middle of a rocker shaft replacement on my '60 F100 with a 292. I got a set of shafts from Mummert who at one point sold them with those grooves cut in them. he no longer does that. I am hesitant to do it myself. I am planning on pressurizing the rocker shafts and had hoped that alone would be enough to oil the rocker assembly adequately.

If you aren’t going high performance you will be just fine I’m sure.

Thanks for these videos. I’m new to the Y-block and have found it disappointing that there’s so few detailed videos on these engines.
It also seems that a lot of the knowledgeable people are getting up there in age (heck, these engines are over 60 years old themselves) so

I don't know it all and certainly have my fair share of blunders, but through it all I am happy to let others know what I have learned and give some tips along the way. I highly encourage you to check out my website and subscribe - there is quite a bit more over there. HotRodReverend.com/blog

Hey new classic car enthusiast here and bought a 59 galaxie. Can't tell what it is. I see 292 because of some block numbers but the distributor is up front. Could you help me understand what I have please. And big fan of the chanel keep up the awesome work sir

With a distributor up front you most probably have an early FE block, not a Y block. Of course you cannot post pics to TH-cam, but if you contact me through my HotRodReverend.com website you will be able to send me a photo or two.

@@HotRodReverend went to the website and could not view contact information. I subscribed. I have access to a 292 y block in a ford f100. Rust ate the truck and frame but the engine appears to be all there. Crank still turns to. One of those ran when it parked situations.
