All part of the fun for him. I practice similar behaviours on my mountain bike obviously without the engine and even then it's like the horse riders own the place.
@@snoopdutt1985 I think you may be misinterpreting them. I mountain bike and gravel bike and my Mrs rides a horse. Her and her fellow riders often act out of fear because the consequence of a thoughtless bike rider can be tragic, for rider or horse, since the horse can always react unpredictability.

Exactly. When I ride on the roads, I stay far left and keep my boy calm. When a car comes past I will thank them for their respect or I will wave my whip for them to slow down. I hate people who rev to scare horses on purpose. I keep following the rules. So should others.

As a horse rider in Wales I personally think you were very respectful you could have very easily sped past those people but you had to courtesy and common sense to stop and turn off your engine!

He wasn't like that at all. It was merely a polite request. Unfortunately, there are far too many motorcyclists who have no respect for others and I suspect the horserider may have had a bad experience or two as a result.
It's easier to control a motorcycle than a horse that's decided to throw a wobbler and you're on the horse, it can be fatal!

Good man, as someone who's been bucked, kicked, and thrown from a horse. Its refreshing to see someone who gives way, very courteously I might add to these men on horseback. I applaud you sir and emplor other riders to be as courteous as this gentleman is.

This is the type of interaction that helps overcome so much of the negativity many feel toward motorcyclists. Mutual respect goes such a long way towards ensuring we can all enjoy our activities in shared spaces.
I've always said the same, horses shouldnt be allowed on tax paying roads as they are too easily spooked which annoys everyone
I never turn my engine off , I'll slow down and give plenty of space while going round but if the horse is scared of noise keep it off the roads it's dangerous

As an American I can appreciate the use of dry humor without a need for explanation. Comedy here has gotten to the point where you actually have to lead with "This is a joke and not how I really feel, so please don't take offense" followed by 40% of people taking offense.
Well . I once stood very still while waiting for a fox. Very early in a summer morn... then a woman rides up the hill making a very happy noise. Very happy . Like oh uh oh uh Ooooooo.... Felt like sharing the story. Nice shared moment of respect between country folks. 😊
This is the only downside of my Yamaha with free-flowing pipes. Came across a lady riding a horse on a main road so I stopped and she was INCREDIBLY thankful. Made my day too, to have such a positive interaction with another person. I’d hate to be responsible for a horse bucking off its rider, especially a kind old lady.

I never cease to be amazed at how many horse riders preach to motorists about what to do and not do around horses.
My advice has always been simple. If a horse is not comfortable around motorists and vehicles, they should not me on a road!
If you watch videos of motorcycle riders in the USA, (where I live) they often show off how they chase down people in their cars and smack their side-view mirrors off if they feel they were impeded in their high-speed slalom through traffic. They imperil everyone including themselves. You don't behave as though the rest of the world should yield to you. I wish more would follow your example.

I feel sorry for horse riders who don't realise the enduro bike was invented years ago. They spend hours looking for stupid bits of leather, hay, nails, shoes, silly hats and boots to keep their mode of transport running when all they have to do is be lucky enough to find and buy a Yamaha WR250R which is the god damn best mode of transport anyone could ever need.
if horses are that scared of everything, then surely taking them near a road or a trail used by motor vehicles is just a bad idea
I did exactly this with my quiet road bike and the hoarse rider was determined to complain! He was hell bent on moaning whatever I did. You're entitled to be there as much as them so just ride, ifs they wanna ride unpredictable animals then that is up to them
Where I am Alberta Canada...we actually have trails for horses and separate for dirt bikes and quads...it's nice for both
The same here in England. Horse riders have routes that they can be sure they will not encounter motor vehicles on, though can use all public highways other than footpaths and motorways.

I live in Germany and it‘s mostly illegal to ride your motorcycle in the nature. A friend of mine *cough cough* had the situation that he stopped his engine for people with dogs and they started shouting at him that it‘s illegal to ride there, pulled him from his motorcycle and called the police...

Not so - more that Scots law hasn't prescribed everything like in England and Wales. My understanding is that a public road must connect to public places together, so two other roads or an isolated chapel. I think those that know keep a very low profile!

We have horses. Just train them to get used to the sounds of motor engines. Its all very possible to get used to. Many riders are scared before the horse get scared. Or are scared for the horse whilst the horse is not. Just train them and you have a better, more relaxed ride.
Well yes, horses used to ride against cannon fire, lines of men with guns, roaring fires. Now a car comes past and they flip their shit. It's clearly bad training and control on the owners part

this is one of the reasons im moving to poland. our new garden is its own trail. land goes on for ages into some woods then onto a lake. damn I got lucky but maybe all my years of suffering in England is now worth it. roll on start of May.

if riders can't control their horses just because of loud noises they shouldn't be on the byway as they are a risk to everyone. vehicle riders have to make sure their vehicles are roadworthy and under control, why should horse riders be any different? What makes them so special?
Because many of the roads were created by horse use and the law we use today was created by them and with them in mind. We can't just cherry-pick the laws that we don't want to apply to us.
Maybe the law makers live out in the country side away from the riff raff and own horse's.

I know not everyone agrees with horses being ridden on public roads or paths for various reasons concerning the animal's unpredictable nature, but like everything else, horses can be desensitized to their surroundings. They do not always pose a hazard, particularly when *all* parties take appropriate caution.
It's so muffled, when you turn on subtitles its automatically in Russian. :)

This is all very fair on the bike riders part, but people that own horses, should be training their horses to be happy around vehicles, not that the biker should be able to scream past them at 8000rpm. But I used to help a local farm that took holiday makers riding, and all of their horses were trained to be happy on the road, and it’s just laziness on top of a superiority complex, which is like I have a horse and has to be my way, that a lot of riders have, which is a big part of the problem.
I was at a country pub in Sussex a couple of years ago, and they have a part of the car park put aside for horses, and this stupid woman was riding through the car park, when her horse kicked the front of a parked car right in, busted headlight and a completely buggered front wing, and she was going to leave without informing the cars owner, but a few of us stopped her, and the fury of her swear words was amusing, especially when we found out that she didn’t have insurance, and she honestly believed that it was the car drivers fault, even though he was eating lunch with his family at the time.
And it was a bit similar in this case, because the biker had stopped well short. And he had stopped his engine, but still that dick on the Hunter, felt that he had to say more than hello and thank you...
I don't ride a motorbike but this makes sense to me. I don't see anything grim about this.

We always switch off in the Peaks then wait until the horses are out of sight before we start up, if it’s on the road overtaking 5/6mph on the opposite kerb, passing again 5/6mph low revs. That’s all it takes we all have to be courteous to each other.
The rider chap may seem a bit OTT, but when you’re on a tense horse, 10 feet up in the air and the ground is a long way away, and very hard, you’ll do what it takes to prevent an accident
I totally agree with stopping and engine off, but begs the question, should such an uncontrollable animal be allowed on a public highway?
Awesome attitude, as a Cyclist I try and promote this same attitude myself to fellow cyclists, alas I often get criticised for it!
Good on you for trying to improve rider conduct. I don't think cycling could ever be misrepresented as much as motorcycling, which is not something I would wish on anyone.
Been horse rider for thirty years & I cant understand why folks are upset with what the horse rider said- some people you meet on the road really dont understand how horses can react and all horses are different

I used to ride horses, now I ride motorcycles, back in the day the trail bikers would do the same as you.
At some point there were some assholes that flew past everyone without any regard to safety...
Now you can hardly ride a motorcycle off road legally anywhere...

I live in France and here you just jump on your bike and hit the forests, got to be careful mind during the hunting season as there are alot of heavily armed (.308, .277 etc etc) hunters wandering around, and if it's after lunch most likely a bit pissed. Defo not like the U.K. Good video, good respect shown.

@TWO WHEEL FIX. There at least one road still open to MC if I'm not mistaken. ;-) Corrieyairack Pass. Quote " The Highland Council states that the Corrieyairack Pass is not maintained as a public road, and is not suitable for use as one, so it advises against using motor vehicles on the pass.[1] The road surface is made of stone, though it is now very eroded and damaged, and in many places the original paving has been lost. It is now used primarily by hikers and mountain bikers, as well as access for workers maintaining the adjacent electricity pylon line" Un Quote" They have put up barriers to stop 4x4's but motorcycles can get through. Note: All the road or path closed signs are rectangle, just giving information, not orders. Basically what its saying you can use the pass, but at your own risk

Just watched a video titled the grim reality of horse trails in England. It was a couple of horsemen passing a motorcyclist. Fascinating stuff.
I was working on the footway on the main road in a rural area where a bridal way crosses the road once, all I had was pedestrian barriers out around the inspection chamber and I was standing in the road in high Viz clothing. A lady on a passing horse went berserk at me, because me walking around in full high Viz clothing sent her horse off on one in the middle of the road. I had no machinery running and was making no noise. But the fact I was moving walking in the road on the opposite side to her was very inconsiderate and I should have known better for alarming her horse. They don't like high Viz clothing apparently, despite the majority of riders wearing it themselves. She told me I would be reported to the highway authority even though I had full authorisation and permits to be there with my work site. Maybe not all horse riders are stable human beings or always considerate themselves?
Omg!! I’m not watching another thing ever!! this was so refreshing so how human beings should be with each other, everyone polite but each getting what they needed without screaming and effing and jeffing at each other all done within the peace and quiet of the countryside. It’s made me feel quite hopeful 😇

Yes he was very respectful, in fact more than he needed to be towards the pedestrians and horse riders in this situation. Now the real question is would you show the same respect toward the dirt bike riders?
From my experience that is rarely the case, with angry pedestrians giving you dirty looks, hand gestures, shouting, refusing to get out of your way, even calling the cops on you,...all because you dared to disturb their peaceful walk in the woods on your dirty evil machine.
lol.. I grew up on motor bikes so you're aiming that at the wrong person! I don't ride them myself, but from a young toddler age can remember being zipped up inside my dads oversized coat (this was the sixties lol) sitting between his legs, later he got a sidecar.. He had every British bike going, Norton, BSA, Triumph etc. He brought them as wrecks then spent a long time searching for original parts to rebuild them. So in answer to your question, don't have problem with bikes or bike riders. What you need to ask yourself is could those people have had bad experiences with people that aren't polite on bikes? Not all people are that way, but yes granted there are some. Please don't tar all people with the same brush :(
Well I assumed that from "...that was really refreshing..." and ..."bikers bitching and moaning..." From my experience that is almost never the case. The opposite is true. The bikers are always polite, they slow down, even give a nod or a wave as they pass by...they just want to ride. Most of the time it's the pedestrians that have a problem with bikes.
What would that "bad experience with bikers be". Passing them almost at idle as quietly as our machines would allow it seems to be enough to send some (older) pedestrians into a fury. What do they expect us to do? Park at the side, turn off our engines and hide in a bush until their royal ass passes? I know what they expect us to do, not ride at all.
I really don't want to tar every person with the same brush, but when only a few of them complaining is enough to get us all banned from doing what we love, it's hard not to get upset.
If everybody just gives up an inch (the pedestrian moves out of the way, the rider slows down, the horse rider trains his horse to motor vehicles), nobody has to give up a mile. And we can all pass each other with a friendly smile and a wave.

Because I have come across myself many, young bikers who have screamed at me for not moving out of their way fast enough on muddy paths, also had a number of times teens came screaming up fast behind me only slowing down a few feet from me, then been told come on move... also there are many video's on here where people have moved out of the way and you hear in their helmet mikes where they are say f*cking walkers. Just because you are polite, and this chap is sadly doesn't mean ALL of the young trial bike riders are!! It's all about mutual respect, walkers and riders. Like I tried to explain politely one day to three bikers, you don't know if the person who isn't moving fast enough for you has medical conditions that means they can't move fast, or if they are elderly then don't move fast. Sadly they weren't impressed and just said yeah what ever. :(
I know loved being on dads bike lol.. :D Miss it and him so much some days, sadly he died when I was 16 due to a biking accident. Oil on a wet road...
I never scream at somebody not moving out of the way nor does any rider around here that I meet. That's just rude and should never be done. Idk maybe the riders are different where you are. A little venting of frustration in your own helmet never hurt anyone. But then again the walkers don't seem to be shy about yelling at the riders either...
On the "not moving out of the way fast enough". One of the main complaints from walkers I hear is how loud the bikes are. You can hear them half a mile away. That gives you plenty of time to find an appropriate spot to move out of the way (people of really bad hearing excluded). I run a lot in the woods and I always manege to move to the side without an issue.
So which one is it, are bikes too loud or are they not? I think most walkers simply underestimate how quickly a bike can come up on you. They are inattentive on the road, so the bikes startle them(when they are right up on them bikes get really loud), which they interpret as aggressive behavior from the riders.
Reminds me of my poor old grandma. When I drove through a town (at the speed limit) in 3rd gear, the rpm was higher and she would yell at me to slow down. When I used 4th or 5th gear (same speed) she would not complain at all. Most of this is all perception. Many riders know this and clutch in when passing someone just to be on the safe side.
Manners cost nothing and make a massive difference - Stay Safe
I ride a ZXR750 with a rather loud exhaust when ever I'm confronted with a horse I always pull over and turn off the engine. What's 40 seconds out of your ride to show respect.
I always do that for horses , I have had ridden a lot off road this year and have not had one problem.
Horses and their owners are not legally obliged to have third party insurance and if for any reason it damages you or you vehicle, thats not your fault, the horse owners are not liable.
That's not true in the UK. The rider/owner is responsible for the animal, which is why most are insured via BHS gold membership.
@@WiltshireByways I'm sorry to disappoint you, but your post isn't correct. I was waved past a horse and rider, the horse smashed the side of my car, whilst I was stationery. I contacted the horses owner, who provided me with their general third party insurance details and I placed my claim with them. Their defence, which is backed up with case law, was that as the horse hasn't done it before and as its an animal with a mind of its own, the legal owner and rider are not liable. I took legal advice, which resulted in the same outcome, unless you can prove the same horse had done it previously, which is impossible to prove.

I have encountered trail bikers walking my dogs and they are always very friendly. But then again , Rhodesian Ridgebacks are on the large side.
My ex's family used to have a Rhodie but it spent most of the day sleeping! They're great family protectors.
I don't get why ppl would have a problem with it. I live in a place with horsillion stables around and this is kind of nice when we pass each other with riders. I simply stop the engine and admire that beautiful animals. I'm not in a hurry anyway, as I'm enjoying my ride. No one ever had a problem with me passing and 99 of 100 always thank me and give me thumbs up. Simple live and let live rule applies :)
Interesting how even though everyone was courteous the male horse rider still had to feel the need to educate even though it was not required as the motorcycle rider went above and beyond what was needed.

Jodi Fisher motorbikes can look like predators to a horse. Imagine a loud metal terminator panther coming at you in a forest and see if you won't freak out :)

Haha if only that was true. There are no narrow shared byways though in OZ like the UK and many walking and horse parks don't allow motorcycles
Here in the States, I used to go to Brown’s Camp in the Tillamook State Forest (plenty of videos on TH-cam, take a look), which was connected to trailheads for mountain bikes and horses. With a rock quarry also becoming the de-facto place for target shooting, and plenty of SUVs taking to the trails, it’s a crowded place.
Perhaps it’s the sheer size of our Off-Highway Vehicle areas or how we mark them, but pedestrians and horses never cross paths with motorcycles, ATVs, or 4x4s.
It seems like what you need on the other side of the pond is a dedicated OHV area, whether it’s privately or publicly owned. Bonus points if you could replicate the track layout from Indian Dunes.
A great case for electric motorcycles. I have to say up here in Scotland I’ve given up with motorcycle trail riding after 50 years, in part due to the law change. Now I find a legal electric assist mountain bike gives me as much pleasure and little or no grief from fellow trail users.
A curse and a blessing John. Horse riders have an enormous problem with cyclists because they're so silent compared to motorcycles. I've got an e-bike myself, so like you have seen first-hand how people's reactions change when noise is removed.

I’ve just started greenlaning and watched your videos, lots of great tips.
At the weekend I stopped for a horse rider, she told me it was probably worse that I was sat waiting (engine off) rather than passing her slowly, she clearly hasn’t heard a Yoshi can before hehe.
The car driver behind her wasn’t so pleasant and asked me in a rather abrupt manner, where my number plate was, luckily having seen your way of dealing with people, I politely told her it was at the rear of the bike (didn’t have chance to educate her about bikes not having front plates).
The head on confrontations aren't so bad usually, it's when you want to overtake from behind (be it on a motorbike or bicycle). The horses always get spooked because they can't see what's coming. It alway seems a bit unfair all the concessions allowed to horse riders as they cause the most damage behind 4*4s and riding one regularly is the preserve of the very rich.
Most people I know who ride are dirt poor because they spend their wages on their horse!
All it takes is for everyone to have some care and consideration for All users. Unfortunately there are some total toss pots that if they don't like it then it shouldn't be allowed and they don't understand that they are the dangerous ones.

@@glennoc8585 Same here in USA. I live near Amish country and people are complete jerks to them all the time antagonizing the horses or feeling like they are entitled to come up and pet it when they have no right to.

I do this at home here in Ontario Canada as well. It's always a good time for a break let the horses pass take a minute and continue. Nice to share the trails

The amount of bridle paths around Lincolnshire but thay never seem to use them .only the boats and byways then complain and then get them restricted to motor vehicle's

The UK is fast becoming unsuitable for off roading .
I used to do trials riding in the 70s and even then the green lanes between sections started to reduce.
Hence the reason 90% of 4x4s or adventure bikes dont ever go off road .
Unfortunately the UK has just become too crowded.
I am a mountain biker once I got told by a horse rider I was destroying the by way with my bicycle at least I don't shit everywhere
A motorcyclist should give way to a horse as a horse rider should clear their sh*t for a walker, as a dog walker should leash their dog for a horse rider or lift their DSBs for kids crawling in the verges. These routes are about sharing and considerate use. Not victimising and channelling hate. Everyone needs to do 'their bit'.

My bike is kind of loud and every time I meet a horse I always stop and turn off my engine wait for them to pass ect yet 9/10 still aren't respectful and try to say how bikes shouldn't be on the byways when in fairness I believe that horses shouldn't and should stick to there own bridal ways but they don't ( we are still respectful to them tho I live on a farm so work with horses myself )
+mrtommyboy46 That's really odd. I meet hundreds of horse riders every year with only one or two looking disappointed to see me. Perhaps because I understand that roads were built for horses, not motorcycles. What area do you ride in?
+WiltshireByways I'm very often around Boscombe and lark hill but have gone down Combe and meat a few on the land we farm ! (There is a right of way there)
