I really appreciate the detail and diagrams on this. My only issue is the downplaying of pain. It’s so wild because the way it looks it doesn’t make sense why it felt like a demon was coming outside of me while mine was inserted. Worse pain ever and even vomited on the way home. I just wish more videos would address this because it was way more than uncomfy. But regardless I’m so glad we even have videos like this to watch so thank you for making this! I mostly watched it for the removal and I’m glad to see it’s way faster so at least if it hurts as bad it’ll be quicker.
I really appreciate you commenting that. Because I came here to see if my excruciating pain And I almost vomited on my drive home was normal or not. I'm still having slight pain or discomfort in my upper right groin area a month later.. .
In case it hasn't happened yet: I had mine taken out just the other day. My Gyno told me cough and while doing that she pulled it out. I felt it for like a split second but too short to even really realize what happened 😅 But, to put this into context: I also didn't have much problem with the insertion. It hurt a little, was very crampy but it wasn't a big problem. Taking it out should in any case be less painful than inserting it 😊
Yea I told my actual dr that I was getting the IUD and she prescribed me Valium for the actual procedure to “relax” me it was so painful I felt nauseous as well and had to have my friend help me to her car which she drove me home and helped me to bed which I remained in for the rest of the day I’m terrified of getting it removed now because I feel the pain is going to be the same! 😭
I was really scared to get my IUD and I just want to write this for anyone else who feels the same. Mostly I was worried about the pain. Although it differs person to person, my experience was just fine. The speculum and swabbing didn't hurt at all, and the actual insertion didn't hurt either (they were both uncomfortable, but not painful). The sound was the worst part - just a bad cramp, but it was over in 5 seconds, probably less. Just take some pain meds beforehand, and make sure you have a doctor that will be patient with you! Your fear will make it hurt way more than it might, and even if it does hurt, it's so fast! I hope this helps anyone who needs it :)
@@elizabethpartida7225 i got mine a few days ago, I don't have kids. For me it was a bit painful, cramp like but a bit stronger as I don't usually cramp when i have my period. I did take a ketoprofen beforehand and was also very scared about the pain. i was recommended to go on the first days of my period when the cervix is "softer" or more open.
"A doctor that will be patient"....I would definately go to a female who has experienced some sort of pain down there (IUD, childbirth) so that she'd know to be super gentle.

I've been a user of IUD for about 8 years, with 2 insertions. This method works for me, and the fact that it is a long-lasting method makes the pain worht it, BUT... The very first time was increadibly painful - and I have high pain tolerance. The fact that uterus-owners are expected to endure this pain or that we are said to exaggerate the pain is medical misoginy. No medical profesional on TH-cam talk about the tenaculum placement. The cervix is sensitive and the tenaculum hurts a lot. When I got my IUD replaced, the clinic used local anesthesia on my cervix and I was under a small percentage of Nitrous oxide. This helped incredibly. I was much more relaxed and the pain level went for a 8/10 to a 3/10. People with vaginas should be able to limit the pain of something that can be a traumatic experience. This birthcontrol method works well, but it doesn't mean that we should accept the pain that is associated with it. And also, why on earth are we still piercing though cervix with a tool that hasn't evolved for over 100 years? Isn't there anything better?
I agree. I just got my paraguard removed today after 6-1/2 years of having it in place. I can not even describe the pain and I was told to relax after my body’s reaction to the pain was to try to squeeze my legs 😅. Anyways, it is my #1 one bc method.
The pain I felt as well was indescribable. After the procedure was done I was so confused that this insertion isn't done with a person medicated (partially sedated). My uterus tilts backwards so it made it difficult for my OBGYN to place it quickly. So she had a US tech come in and do an ultrasound to help guide her. The process was so painful I thought I was going to vomit. The pain subsided as soon as it was done. I was just left with cramps and spotting for about 2 days. After that everything was completely good. So getting the IUD was completely worth it. But am I traumatized? Yes! I am not looking forward to getting it taken out. Hopefully most women do not experience the pain I did. Holy smokes!
@@jmonise5003 got an iud last month and it fell out after a month so just had to get it put back in yesterday… this time was a little better because i was a little more relaxed but man it was awful going through that pain twice in the span of one month 😭 my dr didn’t play it down much but we seriously are told “gonna be some pressure. or this might be uncomfortable” but if it makes me cry… it’s pretty dang awful.
Could you please make a video addressing pain during procedures? I’ve had two hysteroscopies that were said to be “uncomfortable” which I found so painful it was traumatic. Many of the comments here mention similar experiences with IUDs. It would be super useful to hear why you and other doctors discuss pain being rare or as something that shouldn’t happen when it is not the case for many women.
I had a similar experience. My doctor said I would not have any pain and it was agonizing. Then after the fact it started to come loose about a year later. When they removed it it was just as painful. I found out some drs use local anesthetics but when I asked my dr refused. They were unable to put the second one in and I ended up having to be put to sleep. Very traumatic and extremely painful. I’ve always had terrible cramps where I have even fainted but this was beyond that. I only got the iud because I have an autoimmune condition that causes clots and the Mirena was the only thing approved to help minimize my period bleeding. I was hemorrhaging and needing iron infusions. I feel like this information is extremely misleading.

There was a major step left out this procedural explanation. The tenaculum forceps (which have two hooks) are used to hold the cervix and then used to pry the cervix open in order for the IUD to be inserted. It is beyond my understanding why doctors do not fully explain the procedure, nor do they explain the vasovagal attack that is common in patients, and instead the invasiveness and the potential pain that some women may experience is minimised. Women ought to be offered a local anaesthetic or sedation for IUD insertion. In this day and age, with the medications that we have, there is no reason for women to experience the trauma and pain that could be avoided by taking steps for preventative pain management during such an invasive procedure.

I had my copper IUD inserted today and was very anxious as I had heard some unsettling stories about the pain and I have a very low tolerance. It was honestly so much easier then I thought. Procedure was a bit different then what she explained in the video but it didn’t feel sharp at all, just a strong, dull period cramp, it was over before I realised it! I took an ibuprofen beforehand as recommended and tried to just have a relaxing day without any plans. Am experiencing some moderate cramps now but nothing severe at all. I honestly feel super happy and relieved about having a safe, hormone free form of birth control and could really recommend this! Goes without saying everyone’s experience will differ, also depending on the person who does the procedure… Just hoping this might ease someone’s anxiety :)
This video is really informative, but I wish doctors would change the description to ‘it shouldn’t be too painful FOR MOST, but it can be severe’. I didn’t find it too bad initially, but within 10 minutes I was vomiting and it was the worst pain of my life (and i’ve had a bone marrow harvest from my pelvis..). 7 months on, i’m still struggling with daily pain. On a waiting list to get it removed. Why aren’t we giving women appropriate pain relief before this procedure and managing expectations appropriately?
After watching videos of this procedure and then reading the comments, I would NEVER get this unless the doctor told me they'd give me some sort of strong pain medicine beforehand.
Thankfully my OBGYN today me it would be painful afterwards but Thankfully he gave me numbing spray and to be on my phone to relax and I didn't feel it it felt like it did when I gave birth with an epidural got it when was 5 dilated lol she was coming fast so got an IUD after my postpartum check up
I love my rainbow baby so much best part of my life makes me so happy I have depression normally but alot better and breastfeeding/pumping makes you lose weight and helps with depression alot I thank God for blessing me with her 🥰👣🙏
Please stop implying insertion doesn’t hurt! I’ve had two, and it is incredibly painful! Doctors need to stop gaslighting women when it comes to pain. Everyone I know who’s had an IUD has experienced moderate to severe pain on insertion. As a healthcare professional myself, we really need to be transparent and honest with our patients. This video is so informative, but describing the sometimes excruciating pain as ‘crampy’ is patronising and wrong.
Yes I just had my third one placed yesterday and the removal and placement was so excruciating and unbearable!!! The doctor said I was being overly dramatic!!
My dearest women of a truth the best way is to agree with your husband and you people follow the natural method , by following your safe period. Any artificial thing you put inside of you whether the IUD or the other method had alot of side effects. And God will hold you responsibility on the last day
I tried having a second one inserted and nearly passed out and threw up from the pain. They should definitely disclose that some do experience a lot of pain.

I just had my IUD placed on wed and now it's going to be Friday. It was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I have never been pregnant, I dont know what contractions feel like. I bawled all day wed when it was placed because it was so painful and the cramps have been so bad for the past 2 days. Whoever says it didnt hurt, I wish I had your luck. I'm just putting my experience out there because i wish i knew i wasnt alone with the pain because as of right now I am regretting this.
I’ve had my IUD for almost 2 years now. It was very painful for me too and my cramps lasted almost 9 months after the insertion. But I think most of the pain was attributed to the doctor clamping my cervix open which I suppose isn’t done by all doctors during this procedure. Even though it hurt a bunch, I still think it was worth it and will be getting another one in about 3 years. It has worked out well for me so I don’t want to scare anyone, but I also don’t want anyone walking into a procedure done on such a sensitive and private area without a detailed picture of what it could be like for them. I suggest ibuprofen 30 mins to an hour before the actual insertion because I don’t even wanna think about what it would have been like without it. Stay safe and healthy out there guys!!
Agreed, doctor told me it would be uncomfortable and feel just like cramps. My cramps are painful but bearable. This feeling was Nothing like cramps. It felt more like a sharp stabbing pain in my uterus. I don't mean this to scare anyone but I wish this wasn't downplayed the way it was for me. Saying its slight discomfort, is misleading and generalizing it so that women feel as though only a few people experience pain sets it up so that getting an IUD seems more appealing. All Im saying is that I expressed my concerns and wasn't taken that seriously.
You are not alone, it was extremely painful for me too, I almost passed out getting it inserted. I recently went to my obgyn to have it removed and replaced with a new one since it has expired, I was terrified about how painful it was gonna be. Well my doc couldn’t find the strings and was not able to get it out, so now I have to pay $1000+ dollars for surgery to have it removed. I will not be doing another IUD, it is too painful and now too expensive to removed, I’ll be switching back to the pill.
The pinch was terrible and then after it was done it induced a hot flash and I was nauseous for a good few minutes. It’s not fine and way worse than ‘uncomfortable’
Just got mine. If I’m being honest it was incredibly painful, but not in the way I thought. I would say it feels like a period cramp if the pain of the cramp was localized to a single point and that’s what made it painful. The clamping also hurt before the insertion. I don’t have the highest pain tolerance though. For anyone thinking about doing it but is scared of the pain, find you a nice doctor who will take it at YOUR pace and also maybe take someone you trust to hold your hand. It is painful but the pain is only a few minutes. Even with the pain, I don’t regret my decision!
It was a sharp stabbing pain for me and by far the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. It’s so shocking to hear people say theirs didn’t hurt much. I still twitch thinking about it 5 years later BUT still worth it compared to taking the pills

Im still weirded out that so many people experience pain during the procedure and they dont give you anything for pain before hand. when i asked my nurse she said the entire first year was painful and its like wtfff?? I am not trying to be in pain for a whole year
Just got mines today. The Mirena. She explained my experience very well. It didn’t take long and she didn’t kid when she said it’ll be uncomfortable and make you crampy. But it does literally feel like menstrual cramps. Something I didn’t hear her mention was that it’s not required but they would like for you to be menstruating. Because that’s when your cervix kinda opens up a little. So right now I don’t notice a difference between before I went in and after🤷🏾♀️ but I’m fine also I took medicine before I went in.
I had no idea what I was in for when I opted to get an IUD. My doctor didn't really walk me through the process when we set up the appointment. So I'm glad I found this video prior to getting it done (2 hours before appt). This helped to ease my nerves just a little bit.
I got my copper IUD insert about a week ago and it was horrible. The pain was not a typical cramp (and I've had to deal with horrible cramps in my teenage years before getting on the pill). It was a sharp pain that radiated though my butt and down my legs and i felt lots of pressure in my pelvis. I felt dizzy and nauseous afterwards and experienced terrible cramping after the procedure. My doctor prescribed me painkillers which helped with the cramps after an hour. I apparently have a uterus that tilts towards my butt so I'm not sure if that affects it. My friend who got the same IUD a couple years ago said that it was not that bad for her. I guess it depends on the person.

@@genesisramirez1610 so sorry for the late response i honestly thought i replied! The procedure for me was extremely painful, i wasn't even given anything to numb my cervix. The cramping was so intense the first day i felt like i was a woman in labour, i have never experienced pain like that before. It was horrible. Constant cramping to the point i almost went to the ER they were so severe and i couldn't catch a break. Finally after 24+ hours of the on and off intense cramping they subsided and i just kept taking Aleve for muscle and back. It is the only thing that works for me. Ibuprofen and Tylenol just made things worse. Now i have very little cramping however the spotting is non-stop and just plain annoying lol i know it will go away though. Soon, i'll be going for my ultrasound to make sure its in place :) Are you still experiencing cramps? I hope you're doing better!! Just hang in there 💜

@@erikaagustin5021 the clamp is not always needed when placing an iud. With or without the clamp it would be uncomfortable/painful. The pain is from the cervix and entering the uterus. It would still feel the same without the clamp.

THE CERVIX HAS NERVES AND IT F**KING HURTS. offer local or pain pills (not ibuprofen) your patients comfort matters. There is a survey being taken by another gyno which has had 16000 participants and 75% says it hurts alot. Woman's pain management matters.

Ladies the Mirena is amazing! If you have heavy/painful periods I recommend 10/10. I just had one removed today after 3 1/2 years bc it was starting to come out. Despite this, I’m getting another one next week + will have it checked annually.
I just got mine a few days ago and I’ll be honest it was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I like to think I have a good pain tolerance but I was honestly traumatized afterwards. Definitely take pain medication before & bring someone if you can!
This gave me such relief!! After watching a video with some sharp tenaculums stabbing/pinching a good chunk of the uterus to steady it during iud insertion I was terrified. 😫🥺 I’m scheduled for one in a couple of weeks. I feel more calm now - thank you for this.
I'm here after that video too, but I've already had my IUD a while, and honestly it wasn't too bad for me. I'm not sure if that got used or why, but it was just some cramping and I think I took ibuprofen beforehand.
Very informative! Possible uterus/cervix perforation & infection is what stopped me from getting Mirena. Just my choice:) I wanted to share a little reminder 💗 As women always ask questions that protect your body. You are in control. Don't forget that. This is a great example of practicing self care. For example, why isn't anesthesia or other stronger pain relief offered with these types of invasive procedures? I ask because female patients are very often expected to endure painful/invasive procedures without protest. Yes, our bodies are unique so they are easy to manipulate at times, but they should be treated with dignity and concern. She shouldnt have to "take it" because her body is "strong" or because no incisions were made. The benchmark shouldn't be well she didn't walk away with horrible injuries...because many actually do leave medical settings with trauma. The "at least..." mentality is not healthy or fair to you either. Again, I always ask questions. I hope you will be empowered to do the same!:) (btw...how can men take more responsibility for their bodies & sexual behavior? What other forms of birth control are available for men other than condoms (which directly affect women) & vasectomy?)
I just got mine implanted on Friday and I can honestly say it didn’t hurt at all. Then again I have very heavy and painful period; this is the reason I got this done. And have to say my bleeding has decreased and the cramps and pain had went down dramatically. This was the BEST THING I ever did for myself
Thank you so much for making this video. I got the Paragard 3 days ago. It didn't feel great, but it didn't come close to the pain I was expecting. If you have severe anxiety, I'd ask your doctor to prescribe medication for that. I also listened to music during it, and that definitely helped too!
I'm on my 3rd skyla and absolutely love it. Mirena made me breakout. As much as I love not getting periods, I wish more doctors would be honest about the pain we can experience, especially if we never had kids. To me its the worse pain I've ever felt. Taking it out and putting it in. Its like severe cramping. I only keep getting it because I dont want kids, and its every 3 years and it stops my period. But its absolute hell for a few minutes. And this is coming from a person whose had 2 pacemakers and 4 heart surgeries.
This is very informative so I wish I'd watched before. I hated the fact that they said it'd be "uncomfortable" tho, I swear doctors should just use painful. The first time they tried doing it we had to reschedule because even the speculum hurt, so they prescribed a medication to take before the next try loll. The cramping afterwards was also not talked about, and as someone who never gets period cramps, that shit was so painful for the rest of the day of. I had my iud inserted 1 hr back… my experience is not that bad… thank god… I hope my periods stop soon… I took 500 mg naproxen 1 hr before the appointment. Also my doctor prescribed misopostrol to be inserted day before the appointment to dilute the cervix… the pain is deep dull pain (2-3 times)… it is more uncomfortable feeling
I have had a coil twice and i can tell you that the pain you feel is unlike any pain you have ever felt before. Its excrutiating and alien and NOTHING like period pain. BUT it lasts 7 seconds. The fitting, i'm talking about.
I'm now on my second IUD and I will have to admit that if they had offered some sort of pain relief or numbing I would have taken it. First time I went white as a ghost and had cold sweats for about 15-20mins after. The second time around I had the removal and replacement done in the same day. I nearly blacked out on the table and the Dr said I was definitely really pale. Don't get me wrong, I love my IUD for the protection it's provided. Just having the procedure be like this makes me thankful it's once every 5 years.
What they’re not telling you about is the tenaculum, I recommend you Google it because your doctor is violating informed consent by not telling you about it
So glad I found your channel, very informative. I have been diagnosed with Andomynosis, I have long and heavy periods which caused severe Anemia. My doctor determined an IUD would be the best option outside of having a hysterectomy to stop the heavy bleeding. Also I'm 44 years old, with the Mirena lasting 5 years, by the time its removed I'll be at menopausal stage. I have an IUD(Mirena) procedure tomorrow and this video was very helpful. Thank you.

This was sooooo helpful!! It eased my mind on removal. I have an appt the end of this month, and I’m having mine removed. Makes me happy it’s easier and not as crappy.
Thank you for the informative video, it helped to calm the nerves before I got my replacement earlier today. I do wish you would explain the tenaculum as well, that is quite a painful thing as well. However, ladies don't be afraid to ask your doctor for other pain options before your appointment, I expressed my concern for how traumatic and painful it was for me the first time I had one, and for my replacement they were able to give me misoprostol, xanax and oxycodone for the anxiety and pain and it was much easier this way. Also, coming out doesn't hurt nearly as much as going in!
I’m getting one in a couple weeks and two of the meds my doc is giving me beforehand are oxycodone and Xanax. How painful was it when you were able to take them?
@sarab2324 with the meds it wasn't bad at all. It was quick, and nothing close compared to without the meds, I was pleasantly surprised. And it's all over in less than 2 minutes. You got it!
I haven't had any trouble with IUDs. I've had two 5 year ones. Not consecutive though. I had a tubal ligation at age 35. Later I got my 2nd IUD to control heavy bleeding at age 37 . It worked. I've been having ovarian cysts and IBS-D for the last few years. Had it removed to see if I notice any changes with that as I've read there could be a correlation. I can say, I probably wouldn't have gotten an IUD if I had watched this video because if I saw the tools and how long it is, and how it goes through the cervix, I would freak out. So, I'm glad I didn't see it because I did love having both IUDs and my insertions and removals were only crampy and not that painful. After procedure was done, I never had pain. Good luck everyone.
CONSIDER TAKING PAIN MEDS BEFORE - JUST IN CASE. I wish my experience only felt like normal period cramps! My copper IUD insertion experience was excruciating. One of my sisters had one inserted a couple years before me and only described normal period cramps. With her description, I only took about an hour and a half off work to have the procedure done. During my own procedure, I began feeling sharp, high-pitched pain, which I guess was when the IUD entered the cervix. This level of pain continued for over half an hour, preventing me from leaving the chair. The level of pain caused nausea and dizziness that continued for around an hour after the insertion. Thankfully, my sweet doctor had a coke and chips brought to me to help. I've had the IUD for a couple years, but my periods are more painful and heavier. Why keep it? Effective birth control. I'm at the point, though, where I'm done with this little heathen. But I dread having it removed.
I am so traumatized by how painful my insertion was that I feel like I need to be sedated to be seen again. I was not in the slightest prepared for how painful the tenaculum and insertion would be. I cried so hard, felt so violated that I wasn’t better informed by my doctor of the potential pain and overall am so anxious to go back for my check up.
Getting mine this Friday and I was sooooo anxious and scared! But watching this has calmed me so much. I guess the anxiety came from the unknown and now that I have seen the whole procedure, I'm no longer as scared. TYSM May update later :)

I enjoyed this video because it gave me clarity on what my OBGYN was doing. I am happy with my choice of birth control, but the insertion was a traumatic experience. My doctor was gentle, but the insertion of the device is a whole different ballgame. It was firstly uncomfortable. It felt like I was being pinched on the inside that turned into period cramps on steroids. I hope no one heard me because I screamed a bit in the procedure room. Breathing deeply helped me not flinch and move as recommended by my doc. Afterwards I could walk, and I was fine to do a sonar .I have it in now for two days and I am still experiencing cramps, but it feels like period cramps.
This was great in terms of information, but I'm curious have you ever had an IUD? I don't question your knowledge but as a person who has had an iud inserted the downplay on pain isn't even considered
Just sharing my experience of the pain to add more information to anyone gathering information. I had a friend who described it as "veru uncomfortable and a tiny bit painful", I would say it was more than a tiny bit but not intolerable. My clinic had the option of doing it under sedation but I chose awake because going under comes with a long recovery. The sound felt like an acute period cramp which definitely hurt but was over in 10 seconds. Then the doctor's assistant came over and talked me through the insertion, getting me to focus on breathing, and that was also painful but not as bad (though it might have just felt better because she distracted me). Overall I'd say it was quite unpleasant but brief, so I don't regret doing it awake, I'll have to have a think if I'll choose awake next time though. They told me that the pain level depends on many things, including where you are in your cycle (better if you're on your period, worse if it's just before your period). If sedation is an option wherever you are, definitely consider it. If you want to do it awake, ask your doctor if it's possible to time it to the best time in your cycle :)
Many women experience no discomfort at all. I've had two types, a copper one and a hormonal one, both times I experienced moderate cramping upon insertion. Both removals were completely comfortable. So much depends on your doctor. Did s/he hurt you when s/he did a pap smear? S/he is likely to be equally careless regarding your comfort in IUD placement. I feel that it’s important to mention that a tenaculum is used to stabilize the cervix. And women do often experience a sharp pinching pain do to this stabilization. Is there a specific reason this was left out of the video? Do you not use them during insertion?
This video was very informative, I wish I would have saw it before I got mine. The pain however is pretty bad and I have a very high pain tolerance. I’m on day 5 since my insertion and other than the random cramping I haven’t had any other issues.
Tell this to your health insurance company. All they care about is money and low cost carriers. Not everyone has access to a caring, sensitive and patient doctor.
I’m from the UK. I had the mirena fitted yesterday as it was recommend as I have endometriosis. Worst pain in existence. Lasts a couple days. But very worth it in the long run
I originally had an mirena insertion attempt aborted due to intense pain 5+ yrs ago. My gyno said C-saction scarring (×2) made it difficult. Had one put in under GA a month ago and itt's finally settled after 2 wks of cramping and 3 of bleeding. Am so glad in Australia health care is free otherwise probs would not have been able to afford op. I am 52 btw.
Can I just say- the 1st insertion and the removal were the worst pains (1st insertion being the worst). It is not as easy as described. Now mind you, I'm on IUD #2 (going on 7 years now with an IUD) and I can say #1 - for sure take ibuprofen before the 1st insertion (it helps some, but the cramping will still suck ass and last days). #2 - removal is one of the sharpest pains I've ever dealt with. It goes as seen with the video- nothing stops the arms from scraping against what-all as it's being pulled out. I honestly felt it sharp straight through my core up to my heart. It was the weirdest and most painful thing I've ever experienced. I wish I had been told to take something before that procedure as well. Thankfully, 2nd time placement was wayyyy easier. In conclusion though, the IUD is not as easy as it is made out to be. I wish there was a little more perspective amongst pain tolerances. Maybe I'm a little wussy, but man, it can suck ass getting these things initially in place and removing them.

...and menstrual cramps can be very painful. My insertion felt like a sharp horrible pain, worst than any menstrual cramp I have ever had. Doctor had to stop and apply some local anesthesia. I has mine put in today, and some sort of numbing agent should be administered..because it was painful..an instrument stretching your cervix open 😵💫. That pain diminished after a while. Now it's just slight cramping.
What happens if they can’t see/find the strings? Do they have to dilate the cervix in order to find and pull it out? Ps I’m an OB/GYN sonographer and I love your videos!
There are a lot of negative accounts in the comments, which are all valid, but I would like to say it’s not horrible for everyone. I had a painless first insertion of my Skyla, and I was a virgin at the time. My second IUD was a Kyleena and I felt strong cramping for 1 minute but it was very bearable and I will be getting another this year. I take no pain meds. So do not be so scared that you turn away from the ideas of an IUD, but be aware that it’s different for everyone.
thank you for saying this, before i got mine my female friends (who never had one) tried to discourage me and told me things to make me afraid, but it wasn't that big of a deal for me, it is for some, but I find it a bit icky to encourage women to be too scared to get efficient protection
I’m reading all these comments and I’m stunned with everyone saying how painful it is. I’m 6 weeks postpartum and had my first IUD placed today. Absolutely felt no pain, just alot of pressure but did not feel pain during the insertion. I did have minimal bleeding for 2 days and very slight cramping. So far my experience with the IUD has been great, everyone is different with the pain tolerance. I was told by my doctor the IUD placement is less painful when you recently gave birth and more painful for someone who never had kids or someone who waited awhile after having kids.
Im doing research before getting my Copper IUD next week. From the looks of it, the pain is individual. One thing you should ask yourself is if you have a high pain tolerance or not. Also make sure you take pain killers before hand for the cramps (I heard Aleve is great). I personally don’t like pain what so ever but I get really painful period cramps. Lots of people don’t get period cramps 😂 which can be a shock going and experiencing painful cramps. I won’t get discourage by the pain and see for myself. But I will come prepare, I will take Aleve an hour before going, and remember it is only for a few minutes. Research shows that only around 3% to 8% of women’s IUD move.
DEPO left me irregular and unable to conceive like forever. I didn't complete my cycles and medication didn't work out to make me complete them. I ended up with endometrial hyperplasia basically endometrial cancer. Get off DEPO asap!!!! Please.
I (17) just got my IUD 3 hours ago, I was told that it would be slightly uncomfortable and the cramp wouldn't last very long. They had me come in on my period to provide better lubrication, I'm glad I listened because they didn't give me anything. no numbing cream like I had asked for, no medicine (Tylenol) after like I was promised. I couldn't imagine being off my period getting this. remember the cramp I mentioned? yeah it was definitely like a sharp pinch going in and a consistent cramp for 2ish hours. like someone is holding your uterus in their fist. I lied on the chair for who knows how long after just feeling really dizzy- when I stood up it was uncomfortable to walk, I just held my stomach and waddled out of the office, stopping every 10ft wanting the vomit. I know I only got mine inserted a few hours ago but does anyone else "feel" theirs? like if I flex or go to the bathroom you feel it? you're probably wonder why I didn't just tell my doctor what I felt when I was there. I would have- if she hadnt disappeared after, it wasn't a busy day she couldn't have been with another patient. even the nurse just *poof* gone. my friend had to help me, thank the gods she came along or i'd still be there. I just hoping the pain goes away soon. its not like a "normal" cramp. cramps stop, this continues
If placed incorrectly it can become embedded. We have different ways we can try to remove it in the office especially with using ultrasound. If unable to remove in the office it can always be removed as an outpatient surgery (hysteroscopy)
I just had my first IUD inserted two days ago. FYI I've never had children. I was extremely nervous because I had heard so many horror stories on the internet. But my provider put me at ease during a consult. However, I still feel that the pain control I was recommended (800 mg ibuprofen 1hr before) was not sufficient. I would say my pain was 8/10 at worst for 2 short bouts of time (likely the tenaculum placement and insertion of the IUD) and while there was intense cramping sensation that was a 6 or 7/10 it was way more tolerable since it was dull. The 8/10 was a deep sharp pain in my belly that caused me to yelp in pain both times it occurred. If the sharp pain lasted more than a few seconds I can see how someone could certainly pass out or vomit from the pain. I would recommend most people ask for a narcotic before the procedure especially if you've never had children. Just to be on the safe side. Also, try to make sure you have someone with you who is comfortable being in the room with you. My husband was there and it was so helpful to have his support. Especially since after the procedure was over I had some weird symptoms of feeling very cold and shivery, tingly fingers, weak shaky legs and of course moderate abdominal cramping. I wouldn't have wanted to drive myself home like that. Within 4 hours post insertion I was in little to no pain thankfully, but the pain I had was no more than a 5 or 6/10 DULL cramp pain. These next two days have been fine. Very little discomfort, no need for ibuprofen. Would I do it again? Yes, but I'd definitely as for a narcotic. If I couldn't have that option then I wouldn't do it.
I FINALLY stopped cramping 2 days after my Mirena insertion..even though I did slide too much on the table, that I actually slid off getting into position..but I didn't hurt myself...just my pride..

I got the iud literally 3 days ago! Although pain tolerance differs from person to person i can honestly say the whole process was more uncomfortable than it was painful! However, i was prompted to take two cytotec pills one the night before and one the morning of! It helps softens your cervic! I did have some mild mild cramping like 2 days after but other than that no problems at all!
I had an IUD and it randomly fell out on its own after about 18 months. I also had 2 premature babies. Is it possible I have an incompetent cervix that just can’t hold things in? Or is that fairly normal?
Literally the worst pain I’ve ever had to endure. I received an abnormal pap last week and now have to go in for a colposcopy next week and I’m terrified!!

I had my 2nd one put in yesterday. The nurse practitioner at my obgyn office hurt my private area so bad with the speculum that I think I was scratched inside. Now it hurts to urinate. The cramps are also pretty painful. I told her I was hurting and she kept wiggling the speculum around inside with it open... I've never had this doctor as my other one just retired. Say the least never seeing her again.
I’m so scared!! I’ve had a baby, and have mirena. I didn’t even feel it being placed. (6weeks postpartum so maybe something to do with there being 0 pain… I actually asked the doctor to warn me before she did it and she told me she was done.!!) I’m getting it replaced soon and I am so terrified it’ll hurt this time! I hear so many horror stories about it. But honestly.. it can’t be worse than labor. And I don’t want another kid. lol.
I really appreciate the detail and diagrams on this. My only issue is the downplaying of pain. It’s so wild because the way it looks it doesn’t make sense why it felt like a demon was coming outside of me while mine was inserted. Worse pain ever and even vomited on the way home. I just wish more videos would address this because it was way more than uncomfy. But regardless I’m so glad we even have videos like this to watch so thank you for making this! I mostly watched it for the removal and I’m glad to see it’s way faster so at least if it hurts as bad it’ll be quicker.

In case it hasn't happened yet: I had mine taken out just the other day. My Gyno told me cough and while doing that she pulled it out. I felt it for like a split second but too short to even really realize what happened 😅 But, to put this into context: I also didn't have much problem with the insertion. It hurt a little, was very crampy but it wasn't a big problem. Taking it out should in any case be less painful than inserting it 😊
Yea I told my actual dr that I was getting the IUD and she prescribed me Valium for the actual procedure to “relax” me it was so painful I felt nauseous as well and had to have my friend help me to her car which she drove me home and helped me to bed which I remained in for the rest of the day I’m terrified of getting it removed now because I feel the pain is going to be the same! 😭

I was really scared to get my IUD and I just want to write this for anyone else who feels the same. Mostly I was worried about the pain. Although it differs person to person, my experience was just fine. The speculum and swabbing didn't hurt at all, and the actual insertion didn't hurt either (they were both uncomfortable, but not painful). The sound was the worst part - just a bad cramp, but it was over in 5 seconds, probably less. Just take some pain meds beforehand, and make sure you have a doctor that will be patient with you! Your fear will make it hurt way more than it might, and even if it does hurt, it's so fast! I hope this helps anyone who needs it :)

For me it was a bit painful, cramp like but a bit stronger as I don't usually cramp when i have my period. I did take a ketoprofen beforehand and was also very scared about the pain.
i was recommended to go on the first days of my period when the cervix is "softer" or more open.

I've been a user of IUD for about 8 years, with 2 insertions. This method works for me, and the fact that it is a long-lasting method makes the pain worht it, BUT...
The very first time was increadibly painful - and I have high pain tolerance. The fact that uterus-owners are expected to endure this pain or that we are said to exaggerate the pain is medical misoginy. No medical profesional on TH-cam talk about the tenaculum placement. The cervix is sensitive and the tenaculum hurts a lot.
When I got my IUD replaced, the clinic used local anesthesia on my cervix and I was under a small percentage of Nitrous oxide. This helped incredibly. I was much more relaxed and the pain level went for a 8/10 to a 3/10.
People with vaginas should be able to limit the pain of something that can be a traumatic experience. This birthcontrol method works well, but it doesn't mean that we should accept the pain that is associated with it.
And also, why on earth are we still piercing though cervix with a tool that hasn't evolved for over 100 years? Isn't there anything better?

I agree. I just got my paraguard removed today after 6-1/2 years of having it in place. I can not even describe the pain and I was told to relax after my body’s reaction to the pain was to try to squeeze my legs 😅. Anyways, it is my #1 one bc method.
The pain I felt as well was indescribable. After the procedure was done I was so confused that this insertion isn't done with a person medicated (partially sedated). My uterus tilts backwards so it made it difficult for my OBGYN to place it quickly. So she had a US tech come in and do an ultrasound to help guide her. The process was so painful I thought I was going to vomit.
The pain subsided as soon as it was done. I was just left with cramps and spotting for about 2 days. After that everything was completely good.
So getting the IUD was completely worth it. But am I traumatized? Yes! I am not looking forward to getting it taken out. Hopefully most women do not experience the pain I did. Holy smokes!
@@jmonise5003 got an iud last month and it fell out after a month so just had to get it put back in yesterday… this time was a little better because i was a little more relaxed but man it was awful going through that pain twice in the span of one month 😭 my dr didn’t play it down much but we seriously are told “gonna be some pressure. or this might be uncomfortable” but if it makes me cry… it’s pretty dang awful.

Could you please make a video addressing pain during procedures? I’ve had two hysteroscopies that were said to be “uncomfortable” which I found so painful it was traumatic. Many of the comments here mention similar experiences with IUDs. It would be super useful to hear why you and other doctors discuss pain being rare or as something that shouldn’t happen when it is not the case for many women.
I had a similar experience. My doctor said I would not have any pain and it was agonizing. Then after the fact it started to come loose about a year later. When they removed it it was just as painful. I found out some drs use local anesthetics but when I asked my dr refused. They were unable to put the second one in and I ended up having to be put to sleep. Very traumatic and extremely painful. I’ve always had terrible cramps where I have even fainted but this was beyond that. I only got the iud because I have an autoimmune condition that causes clots and the Mirena was the only thing approved to help minimize my period bleeding. I was hemorrhaging and needing iron infusions. I feel like this information is extremely misleading.

Because the pain doesn’t last long and it’s a lot of money for them. About $1700 for a Mirena IUD.
There was a major step left out this procedural explanation. The tenaculum forceps (which have two hooks) are used to hold the cervix and then used to pry the cervix open in order for the IUD to be inserted. It is beyond my understanding why doctors do not fully explain the procedure, nor do they explain the vasovagal attack that is common in patients, and instead the invasiveness and the potential pain that some women may experience is minimised. Women ought to be offered a local anaesthetic or sedation for IUD insertion. In this day and age, with the medications that we have, there is no reason for women to experience the trauma and pain that could be avoided by taking steps for preventative pain management during such an invasive procedure.

I had my copper IUD inserted today and was very anxious as I had heard some unsettling stories about the pain and I have a very low tolerance. It was honestly so much easier then I thought. Procedure was a bit different then what she explained in the video but it didn’t feel sharp at all, just a strong, dull period cramp, it was over before I realised it! I took an ibuprofen beforehand as recommended and tried to just have a relaxing day without any plans. Am experiencing some moderate cramps now but nothing severe at all. I honestly feel super happy and relieved about having a safe, hormone free form of birth control and could really recommend this! Goes without saying everyone’s experience will differ, also depending on the person who does the procedure… Just hoping this might ease someone’s anxiety :)

This video is really informative, but I wish doctors would change the description to ‘it shouldn’t be too painful FOR MOST, but it can be severe’. I didn’t find it too bad initially, but within 10 minutes I was vomiting and it was the worst pain of my life (and i’ve had a bone marrow harvest from my pelvis..). 7 months on, i’m still struggling with daily pain. On a waiting list to get it removed. Why aren’t we giving women appropriate pain relief before this procedure and managing expectations appropriately?

After watching videos of this procedure and then reading the comments, I would NEVER get this unless the doctor told me they'd give me some sort of strong pain medicine beforehand.
Thankfully my OBGYN today me it would be painful afterwards but Thankfully he gave me numbing spray and to be on my phone to relax and I didn't feel it it felt like it did when I gave birth with an epidural got it when was 5 dilated lol she was coming fast so got an IUD after my postpartum check up
I love my rainbow baby so much best part of my life makes me so happy I have depression normally but alot better and breastfeeding/pumping makes you lose weight and helps with depression alot I thank God for blessing me with her 🥰👣🙏
Please stop implying insertion doesn’t hurt! I’ve had two, and it is incredibly painful! Doctors need to stop gaslighting women when it comes to pain. Everyone I know who’s had an IUD has experienced moderate to severe pain on insertion. As a healthcare professional myself, we really need to be transparent and honest with our patients. This video is so informative, but describing the sometimes excruciating pain as ‘crampy’ is patronising and wrong.
Yes I just had my third one placed yesterday and the removal and placement was so excruciating and unbearable!!! The doctor said I was being overly dramatic!!

My dearest women of a truth the best way is to agree with your husband and you people follow the natural method , by following your safe period. Any artificial thing you put inside of you whether the IUD or the other method had alot of side effects. And God will hold you responsibility on the last day
I tried having a second one inserted and nearly passed out and threw up from the pain. They should definitely disclose that some do experience a lot of pain.

I just had my IUD placed on wed and now it's going to be Friday. It was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. I have never been pregnant, I dont know what contractions feel like. I bawled all day wed when it was placed because it was so painful and the cramps have been so bad for the past 2 days. Whoever says it didnt hurt, I wish I had your luck. I'm just putting my experience out there because i wish i knew i wasnt alone with the pain because as of right now I am regretting this.
I’ve had my IUD for almost 2 years now. It was very painful for me too and my cramps lasted almost 9 months after the insertion. But I think most of the pain was attributed to the doctor clamping my cervix open which I suppose isn’t done by all doctors during this procedure. Even though it hurt a bunch, I still think it was worth it and will be getting another one in about 3 years. It has worked out well for me so I don’t want to scare anyone, but I also don’t want anyone walking into a procedure done on such a sensitive and private area without a detailed picture of what it could be like for them. I suggest ibuprofen 30 mins to an hour before the actual insertion because I don’t even wanna think about what it would have been like without it. Stay safe and healthy out there guys!!
Agreed, doctor told me it would be uncomfortable and feel just like cramps. My cramps are painful but bearable. This feeling was Nothing like cramps. It felt more like a sharp stabbing pain in my uterus. I don't mean this to scare anyone but I wish this wasn't downplayed the way it was for me. Saying its slight discomfort, is misleading and generalizing it so that women feel as though only a few people experience pain sets it up so that getting an IUD seems more appealing. All Im saying is that I expressed my concerns and wasn't taken that seriously.
Omg! Oh, No NO!! I've had 2 IUDs and there is definitely pain and discomfort. It literally makes me sweat in places I didn't know I could 😅
You are not alone, it was extremely painful for me too, I almost passed out getting it inserted. I recently went to my obgyn to have it removed and replaced with a new one since it has expired, I was terrified about how painful it was gonna be. Well my doc couldn’t find the strings and was not able to get it out, so now I have to pay $1000+ dollars for surgery to have it removed. I will not be doing another IUD, it is too painful and now too expensive to removed, I’ll be switching back to the pill.
The pinch was terrible and then after it was done it induced a hot flash and I was nauseous for a good few minutes. It’s not fine and way worse than ‘uncomfortable’
Just got mine. If I’m being honest it was incredibly painful, but not in the way I thought. I would say it feels like a period cramp if the pain of the cramp was localized to a single point and that’s what made it painful. The clamping also hurt before the insertion. I don’t have the highest pain tolerance though. For anyone thinking about doing it but is scared of the pain, find you a nice doctor who will take it at YOUR pace and also maybe take someone you trust to hold your hand. It is painful but the pain is only a few minutes. Even with the pain, I don’t regret my decision!
It was a sharp stabbing pain for me and by far the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced. It’s so shocking to hear people say theirs didn’t hurt much. I still twitch thinking about it 5 years later BUT still worth it compared to taking the pills

Just got mines today. The Mirena. She explained my experience very well. It didn’t take long and she didn’t kid when she said it’ll be uncomfortable and make you crampy. But it does literally feel like menstrual cramps. Something I didn’t hear her mention was that it’s not required but they would like for you to be menstruating. Because that’s when your cervix kinda opens up a little. So right now I don’t notice a difference between before I went in and after🤷🏾♀️ but I’m fine also I took medicine before I went in.
I had no idea what I was in for when I opted to get an IUD. My doctor didn't really walk me through the process when we set up the appointment. So I'm glad I found this video prior to getting it done (2 hours before appt). This helped to ease my nerves just a little bit.

I got my copper IUD insert about a week ago and it was horrible. The pain was not a typical cramp (and I've had to deal with horrible cramps in my teenage years before getting on the pill). It was a sharp pain that radiated though my butt and down my legs and i felt lots of pressure in my pelvis. I felt dizzy and nauseous afterwards and experienced terrible cramping after the procedure. My doctor prescribed me painkillers which helped with the cramps after an hour. I apparently have a uterus that tilts towards my butt so I'm not sure if that affects it. My friend who got the same IUD a couple years ago said that it was not that bad for her. I guess it depends on the person.

@@genesisramirez1610 so sorry for the late response i honestly thought i replied! The procedure for me was extremely painful, i wasn't even given anything to numb my cervix. The cramping was so intense the first day i felt like i was a woman in labour, i have never experienced pain like that before. It was horrible. Constant cramping to the point i almost went to the ER they were so severe and i couldn't catch a break. Finally after 24+ hours of the on and off intense cramping they subsided and i just kept taking Aleve for muscle and back. It is the only thing that works for me. Ibuprofen and Tylenol just made things worse. Now i have very little cramping however the spotting is non-stop and just plain annoying lol i know it will go away though. Soon, i'll be going for my ultrasound to make sure its in place :) Are you still experiencing cramps? I hope you're doing better!! Just hang in there 💜

@@erikaagustin5021 the clamp is not always needed when placing an iud. With or without the clamp it would be uncomfortable/painful. The pain is from the cervix and entering the uterus. It would still feel the same without the clamp.

THE CERVIX HAS NERVES AND IT F**KING HURTS. offer local or pain pills (not ibuprofen) your patients comfort matters. There is a survey being taken by another gyno which has had 16000 participants and 75% says it hurts alot. Woman's pain management matters.

Ladies the Mirena is amazing! If you have heavy/painful periods I recommend 10/10. I just had one removed today after 3 1/2 years bc it was starting to come out. Despite this, I’m getting another one next week + will have it checked annually.
I just got mine a few days ago and I’ll be honest it was the worst pain I’ve ever felt. I like to think I have a good pain tolerance but I was honestly traumatized afterwards. Definitely take pain medication before & bring someone if you can!

I'm here after that video too, but I've already had my IUD a while, and honestly it wasn't too bad for me. I'm not sure if that got used or why, but it was just some cramping and I think I took ibuprofen beforehand.
Very informative! Possible uterus/cervix perforation & infection is what stopped me from getting Mirena. Just my choice:) I wanted to share a little reminder 💗 As women always ask questions that protect your body. You are in control. Don't forget that. This is a great example of practicing self care. For example, why isn't anesthesia or other stronger pain relief offered with these types of invasive procedures? I ask because female patients are very often expected to endure painful/invasive procedures without protest. Yes, our bodies are unique so they are easy to manipulate at times, but they should be treated with dignity and concern. She shouldnt have to "take it" because her body is "strong" or because no incisions were made. The benchmark shouldn't be well she didn't walk away with horrible injuries...because many actually do leave medical settings with trauma. The "at least..." mentality is not healthy or fair to you either. Again, I always ask questions. I hope you will be empowered to do the same!:) (btw...how can men take more responsibility for their bodies & sexual behavior? What other forms of birth control are available for men other than condoms (which directly affect women) & vasectomy?)

I just got mine implanted on Friday and I can honestly say it didn’t hurt at all. Then again I have very heavy and painful period; this is the reason I got this done. And have to say my bleeding has decreased and the cramps and pain had went down dramatically. This was the BEST THING I ever did for myself
Thank you so much for making this video. I got the Paragard 3 days ago. It didn't feel great, but it didn't come close to the pain I was expecting. If you have severe anxiety, I'd ask your doctor to prescribe medication for that. I also listened to music during it, and that definitely helped too!

I'm on my 3rd skyla and absolutely love it. Mirena made me breakout. As much as I love not getting periods, I wish more doctors would be honest about the pain we can experience, especially if we never had kids. To me its the worse pain I've ever felt. Taking it out and putting it in. Its like severe cramping. I only keep getting it because I dont want kids, and its every 3 years and it stops my period. But its absolute hell for a few minutes. And this is coming from a person whose had 2 pacemakers and 4 heart surgeries.
Currently sitting at my OB office waiting to get mine removed. I was kind of nervous but after the video I’m better! Hoping for baby #3 🥰

This is very informative so I wish I'd watched before. I hated the fact that they said it'd be "uncomfortable" tho, I swear doctors should just use painful. The first time they tried doing it we had to reschedule because even the speculum hurt, so they prescribed a medication to take before the next try loll. The cramping afterwards was also not talked about, and as someone who never gets period cramps, that shit was so painful for the rest of the day of. Anyway hope that's informative for anyone going in.

I had my iud inserted 1 hr back… my experience is not that bad… thank god… I hope my periods stop soon… I took 500 mg naproxen 1 hr before the appointment. Also my doctor prescribed misopostrol to be inserted day before the appointment to dilute the cervix… the pain is deep dull pain (2-3 times)… it is more uncomfortable feeling
I have had a coil twice and i can tell you that the pain you feel is unlike any pain you have ever felt before. Its excrutiating and alien and NOTHING like period pain. BUT it lasts 7 seconds. The fitting, i'm talking about.
Mime lasted for 48hrs
I'm now on my second IUD and I will have to admit that if they had offered some sort of pain relief or numbing I would have taken it. First time I went white as a ghost and had cold sweats for about 15-20mins after.
The second time around I had the removal and replacement done in the same day. I nearly blacked out on the table and the Dr said I was definitely really pale.
Don't get me wrong, I love my IUD for the protection it's provided. Just having the procedure be like this makes me thankful it's once every 5 years.
What they’re not telling you about is the tenaculum, I recommend you Google it because your doctor is violating informed consent by not telling you about it

So glad I found your channel, very informative. I have been diagnosed with Andomynosis, I have long and heavy periods which caused severe Anemia. My doctor determined an IUD would be the best option outside of having a hysterectomy to stop the heavy bleeding. Also I'm 44 years old, with the Mirena lasting 5 years, by the time its removed I'll be at menopausal stage. I have an IUD(Mirena) procedure tomorrow and this video was very helpful. Thank you.

Thank you for the informative video, it helped to calm the nerves before I got my replacement earlier today. I do wish you would explain the tenaculum as well, that is quite a painful thing as well. However, ladies don't be afraid to ask your doctor for other pain options before your appointment, I expressed my concern for how traumatic and painful it was for me the first time I had one, and for my replacement they were able to give me misoprostol, xanax and oxycodone for the anxiety and pain and it was much easier this way. Also, coming out doesn't hurt nearly as much as going in!
I’m getting one in a couple weeks and two of the meds my doc is giving me beforehand are oxycodone and Xanax. How painful was it when you were able to take them?
@sarab2324 with the meds it wasn't bad at all. It was quick, and nothing close compared to without the meds, I was pleasantly surprised. And it's all over in less than 2 minutes. You got it!
I haven't had any trouble with IUDs. I've had two 5 year ones. Not consecutive though. I had a tubal ligation at age 35. Later I got my 2nd IUD to control heavy bleeding at age 37 . It worked. I've been having ovarian cysts and IBS-D for the last few years. Had it removed to see if I notice any changes with that as I've read there could be a correlation. I can say, I probably wouldn't have gotten an IUD if I had watched this video because if I saw the tools and how long it is, and how it goes through the cervix, I would freak out. So, I'm glad I didn't see it because I did love having both IUDs and my insertions and removals were only crampy and not that painful. After procedure was done, I never had pain. Good luck everyone.
CONSIDER TAKING PAIN MEDS BEFORE - JUST IN CASE. I wish my experience only felt like normal period cramps! My copper IUD insertion experience was excruciating. One of my sisters had one inserted a couple years before me and only described normal period cramps. With her description, I only took about an hour and a half off work to have the procedure done. During my own procedure, I began feeling sharp, high-pitched pain, which I guess was when the IUD entered the cervix. This level of pain continued for over half an hour, preventing me from leaving the chair. The level of pain caused nausea and dizziness that continued for around an hour after the insertion. Thankfully, my sweet doctor had a coke and chips brought to me to help. I've had the IUD for a couple years, but my periods are more painful and heavier. Why keep it? Effective birth control. I'm at the point, though, where I'm done with this little heathen. But I dread having it removed.
This was my exact experience yesterday and I have a high tolerance for pain
I am so traumatized by how painful my insertion was that I feel like I need to be sedated to be seen again. I was not in the slightest prepared for how painful the tenaculum and insertion would be. I cried so hard, felt so violated that I wasn’t better informed by my doctor of the potential pain and overall am so anxious to go back for my check up.

I enjoyed this video because it gave me clarity on what my OBGYN was doing. I am happy with my choice of birth control, but the insertion was a traumatic experience. My doctor was gentle, but the insertion of the device is a whole different ballgame. It was firstly uncomfortable. It felt like I was being pinched on the inside that turned into period cramps on steroids. I hope no one heard me because I screamed a bit in the procedure room. Breathing deeply helped me not flinch and move as recommended by my doc. Afterwards I could walk, and I was fine to do a sonar .I have it in now for two days and I am still experiencing cramps, but it feels like period cramps.

Just sharing my experience of the pain to add more information to anyone gathering information. I had a friend who described it as "veru uncomfortable and a tiny bit painful", I would say it was more than a tiny bit but not intolerable. My clinic had the option of doing it under sedation but I chose awake because going under comes with a long recovery. The sound felt like an acute period cramp which definitely hurt but was over in 10 seconds. Then the doctor's assistant came over and talked me through the insertion, getting me to focus on breathing, and that was also painful but not as bad (though it might have just felt better because she distracted me). Overall I'd say it was quite unpleasant but brief, so I don't regret doing it awake, I'll have to have a think if I'll choose awake next time though. They told me that the pain level depends on many things, including where you are in your cycle (better if you're on your period, worse if it's just before your period). If sedation is an option wherever you are, definitely consider it. If you want to do it awake, ask your doctor if it's possible to time it to the best time in your cycle :)
Many women experience no discomfort at all. I've had two types, a copper one and a hormonal one, both times I experienced moderate cramping upon insertion. Both removals were completely comfortable. So much depends on your doctor. Did s/he hurt you when s/he did a pap smear? S/he is likely to be equally careless regarding your comfort in IUD placement. Find a provider that doesn't go at their work like they are fighting snakes. It is not supposed to hurt. Gentle, woman centered gynecology is the way to go. Read doctor reviews; ask your friends about their doctors. Because health care doesn't have to hurt to be effective.

I feel that it’s important to mention that a tenaculum is used to stabilize the cervix. And women do often experience a sharp pinching pain do to this stabilization. Is there a specific reason this was left out of the video? Do you not use them during insertion?
This video was very informative, I wish I would have saw it before I got mine. The pain however is pretty bad and I have a very high pain tolerance. I’m on day 5 since my insertion and other than the random cramping I haven’t had any other issues.

Tell this to your health insurance company. All they care about is money and low cost carriers. Not everyone has access to a caring, sensitive and patient doctor.

I’m from the UK. I had the mirena fitted yesterday as it was recommend as I have endometriosis. Worst pain in existence. Lasts a couple days. But very worth it in the long run

I originally had an mirena insertion attempt aborted due to intense pain 5+ yrs ago. My gyno said C-saction scarring (×2) made it difficult.
Had one put in under GA a month ago and itt's finally settled after 2 wks of cramping and 3 of bleeding.
Am so glad in Australia health care is free otherwise probs would not have been able to afford op. I am 52 btw.
Can I just say- the 1st insertion and the removal were the worst pains (1st insertion being the worst). It is not as easy as described. Now mind you, I'm on IUD #2 (going on 7 years now with an IUD) and I can say #1 - for sure take ibuprofen before the 1st insertion (it helps some, but the cramping will still suck ass and last days). #2 - removal is one of the sharpest pains I've ever dealt with. It goes as seen with the video- nothing stops the arms from scraping against what-all as it's being pulled out. I honestly felt it sharp straight through my core up to my heart. It was the weirdest and most painful thing I've ever experienced. I wish I had been told to take something before that procedure as well. Thankfully, 2nd time placement was wayyyy easier. In conclusion though, the IUD is not as easy as it is made out to be. I wish there was a little more perspective amongst pain tolerances. Maybe I'm a little wussy, but man, it can suck ass getting these things initially in place and removing them.

...and menstrual cramps can be very painful. My insertion felt like a sharp horrible pain, worst than any menstrual cramp I have ever had. Doctor had to stop and apply some local anesthesia. Nonetheless, very educational video. So, thanks for making an updated video concerning pain management during insertion.
I has mine put in today, and some sort of numbing agent should be administered..because it was painful..an instrument stretching your cervix open 😵💫. That pain diminished after a while. Now it's just slight cramping.

There are a lot of negative accounts in the comments, which are all valid, but I would like to say it’s not horrible for everyone. I had a painless first insertion of my Skyla, and I was a virgin at the time.
My second IUD was a Kyleena and I felt strong cramping for 1 minute but it was very bearable and I will be getting another this year. I take no pain meds.
So do not be so scared that you turn away from the ideas of an IUD, but be aware that it’s different for everyone.
thank you for saying this, before i got mine my female friends (who never had one) tried to discourage me and told me things to make me afraid, but it wasn't that big of a deal for me, it is for some, but I find it a bit icky to encourage women to be too scared to get efficient protection

The device should be securely attached so when they remove it, there should be nothing left in there.
I’m reading all these comments and I’m stunned with everyone saying how painful it is. I’m 6 weeks postpartum and had my first IUD placed today. Absolutely felt no pain, just alot of pressure but did not feel pain during the insertion. I did have minimal bleeding for 2 days and very slight cramping. So far my experience with the IUD has been great, everyone is different with the pain tolerance. I was told by my doctor the IUD placement is less painful when you recently gave birth and more painful for someone who never had kids or someone who waited awhile after having kids.

Im doing research before getting my Copper IUD next week. From the looks of it, the pain is individual. One thing you should ask yourself is if you have a high pain tolerance or not. Also make sure you take pain killers before hand for the cramps (I heard Aleve is great). I personally don’t like pain what so ever but I get really painful period cramps. Lots of people don’t get period cramps 😂 which can be a shock going and experiencing painful cramps. I won’t get discourage by the pain and see for myself. But I will come prepare, I will take Aleve an hour before going, and remember it is only for a few minutes. Research shows that only around 3% to 8% of women’s IUD move.
Okay so quick question, are tenaculums often used in placement? Is it possible to get one placed without the use of one?

DEPO left me irregular and unable to conceive like forever. I didn't complete my cycles and medication didn't work out to make me complete them. I ended up with endometrial hyperplasia basically endometrial cancer. Get off DEPO asap!!!! Please.
I (17) just got my IUD 3 hours ago, I was told that it would be slightly uncomfortable and the cramp wouldn't last very long. They had me come in on my period to provide better lubrication, I'm glad I listened because they didn't give me anything. no numbing cream like I had asked for, no medicine (Tylenol) after like I was promised. I couldn't imagine being off my period getting this. remember the cramp I mentioned? yeah it was definitely like a sharp pinch going in and a consistent cramp for 2ish hours. like someone is holding your uterus in their fist. I lied on the chair for who knows how long after just feeling really dizzy- when I stood up it was uncomfortable to walk, I just held my stomach and waddled out of the office, stopping every 10ft wanting the vomit. I know I only got mine inserted a few hours ago but does anyone else "feel" theirs? like if I flex or go to the bathroom you feel it? you're probably wonder why I didn't just tell my doctor what I felt when I was there. I would have- if she hadnt disappeared after, it wasn't a busy day she couldn't have been with another patient. even the nurse just *poof* gone. my friend had to help me, thank the gods she came along or i'd still be there. I just hoping the pain goes away soon. its not like a "normal" cramp. cramps stop, this continues

Has there ever been an instance of the IUD adhering and “sticking” to the uterus and not wanting to come out?
If placed incorrectly it can become embedded. We have different ways we can try to remove it in the office especially with using ultrasound. If unable to remove in the office it can always be removed as an outpatient surgery (hysteroscopy)
I just had my first IUD inserted two days ago. FYI I've never had children. I was extremely nervous because I had heard so many horror stories on the internet. But my provider put me at ease during a consult.
However, I still feel that the pain control I was recommended (800 mg ibuprofen 1hr before) was not sufficient. I would say my pain was 8/10 at worst for 2 short bouts of time (likely the tenaculum placement and insertion of the IUD) and while there was intense cramping sensation that was a 6 or 7/10 it was way more tolerable since it was dull. The 8/10 was a deep sharp pain in my belly that caused me to yelp in pain both times it occurred. If the sharp pain lasted more than a few seconds I can see how someone could certainly pass out or vomit from the pain.
I would recommend most people ask for a narcotic before the procedure especially if you've never had children. Just to be on the safe side. Also, try to make sure you have someone with you who is comfortable being in the room with you. My husband was there and it was so helpful to have his support. Especially since after the procedure was over I had some weird symptoms of feeling very cold and shivery, tingly fingers, weak shaky legs and of course moderate abdominal cramping. I wouldn't have wanted to drive myself home like that. Within 4 hours post insertion I was in little to no pain thankfully, but the pain I had was no more than a 5 or 6/10 DULL cramp pain. These next two days have been fine. Very little discomfort, no need for ibuprofen. Would I do it again? Yes, but I'd definitely as for a narcotic. If I couldn't have that option then I wouldn't do it.

I FINALLY stopped cramping 2 days after my Mirena insertion..even though I did slide too much on the table, that I actually slid off getting into position..but I didn't hurt myself...just my pride..
Why do people keep saying it’s not painful? I got it recently and it was the most painful experience in my life and I’ve had my nose bashed with a brick. It’s like being shot.
I really want to get an IUD. But my anxiety is so bad lol. Everyone says it’s the worst pain when inserting 😭 so I’m so scareddddd lol but I think it’s one of the best and most practical forms of birth control. Do they dialate your cervix before insertion??
They give you a suppository to place at the cervix several HOURS before your appointment to dialate the cervix.

I got the iud literally 3 days ago! Although pain tolerance differs from person to person i can honestly say the whole process was more uncomfortable than it was painful! However, i was prompted to take two cytotec pills one the night before and one the morning of! It helps softens your cervic! I did have some mild mild cramping like 2 days after but other than that no problems at all!

Literally the worst pain I’ve ever had to endure. I received an abnormal pap last week and now have to go in for a colposcopy next week and I’m terrified!!

I use the Menstrual cup as well, would I have problems with the strings?
I had my 2nd one put in yesterday. The nurse practitioner at my obgyn office hurt my private area so bad with the speculum that I think I was scratched inside. Now it hurts to urinate. The cramps are also pretty painful. I told her I was hurting and she kept wiggling the speculum around inside with it open... I've never had this doctor as my other one just retired. Say the least never seeing her again.
I’m so scared!! I’ve had a baby, and have mirena. I didn’t even feel it being placed. (6weeks postpartum so maybe something to do with there being 0 pain… I actually asked the doctor to warn me before she did it and she told me she was done.!!) I’m getting it replaced soon and I am so terrified it’ll hurt this time! I hear so many horror stories about it. But honestly.. it can’t be worse than labor. And I don’t want another kid. lol.
