Kurt definitely wanted nirvana to be the biggest band in the world, however, having that amount of mass acceptance and having to deal with the pressures that comes with fame was probably not exactly what he dreamed of. It can be very stressful on the human psyche. That may have influenced his attitude in interviews. His energy & demeanor in nirvana interviews from ‘90 to ‘93 is so stark. Lastly, the dude was a heroin addict, of course he sounded careless and dismissive.

Exactly two things can be true at once. Wanting fame and hating it makes total sense. You want to share your art, be successful, inspire people. But fame also comes with lack of privacy, a new lifestyle, and probably an impact on someone’s mental health.
I think it’s normal to dream of being a rock star and plan art out and everything even if someone comes off as careless. When you’re famous, I’d assume you are probably concerned with how the public see you and your art.

because its not always about the fame? being a musician means youre passionate about the music you make and you love music, it just happens to be a profession you may or may not become successful in. it's not a guaranteed successful career anyways and most musicians see it as a hobby, not something that that'll actually make them bank. sometimes they just happen to become successful because of genuine talent or pure luck. any person that tries to become a "rockstar" for the fame is immediately snaked out as a poser and an asshole, we know this. i say this as a musicianbtw. and btw, maybe dont use words you dont know the meaning of, or words you saw online once and now milk it.@@Jimmy-cv2js

ppl bringing him up makes me happy ngl. his music changed so many lives and he contributed healthily to a lot to the early online remix scene and the way internet interacted with the industry, while all the "metallicas" were being reactionary d!ckheads. And to the point of the video, always seemed a super sincere and genuine dude in interviews, even in his own personal and very "uncool" failures.
I've seen him mention in interviews about how he feels insecure about his "relevance" so it's good to see people talking about him, because I think he's always been an incredible and inspiring artist. And mental health figure, because if he of all people can make it to the "other side" of a lot of what he seems to have, it gives a lot of us on the former side hope. He even was apparently a confidant for Josh Homme in a lot of dark times around the time of "...Like Clockwork" (which was one of my favorite qotsa albums for its emotional content).

What i miss in here is what Pearl Jam did in their height of their fame. They have given only a small amount of interviews, Nirvana gave more of them. They did not produce any videos to promote three of their albums, Nirvana did it on In Utero, they fought against Ticketmaster and they never looked after Ten to get their old sound back. Would have been easy for them in the wave of Postgrunge and the success of bands like Staind or Nickelback to go back to their sound on that album, but they stood true to themselves.
To say it in the words of Jacob Bannon of Converge: "What I naively misconstrued as a major label sham was actually a true collection of musical misfits. Pearl Jam found each other organically, just like our band did. They never wanted to play anything but honest, emotional music, just like our band played. And they’re all intensely different individuals, just like our band is. Pearl Jam wasn’t cool or hip, and didn’t claim to be. They were awkward kids, just like us. The closer I looked, the more parallels I saw to my own efforts and motivation. Though we played at different volumes and to different ends, we carried something similar in our blood. What I mistook in them as calculated was actually a very different “c” word entirely: character. They were a form of rebellion back then and I was just too stubborn to realize it. Pearl Jam’s bitterness towards the industry was very real. As promising kids, they innocently teetered on the edge of something spectacular only to be shoved off the edge by big business interests. They plummeted through the air, not ready to be the band that the world demanded them to be. The external pressures that cursed them at the peak of their ’90s powers could’ve crushed coal to diamonds. Miraculously they survived the fall and matured into a personal and political musical powerhouse."

That don’t care attitude wasn’t something that they did, it was almost forced to them, it’s not like they never wanted MTV not to play their videos and not be popular but steer clear of all the bullshit press and media they were receiving, I’ve seen it happen literally 30 years after Kurt’s death, people trying to take things out of context and label him and band and make a big story. Nirvana were always getting interviews before they were popular as well and there is a shit ton of them, most of them had the same repeating questions but the band decided to answer and do it anyways.
Another reason was Kurt was very self aware of the fact that he was influencing other fans and kids who were trying to be like their ‘favourite junkie rockstar’ and he clearly didn’t want that, he mentions this in an interview on 11/8/93, he was aware of the negative attention he and the band received and Kurt literally preached not to believe everything you read. He had to be very careful with what he said and it’s not surprise when you’re a young adult just a couple of years older than the legal drinking age and you have the whole music industry’s expectations and pressures on you after you worked off so hard for that to happen you would definitely need to approach things in a different manner.
If you’ve ever spent time on Interviews with just Kurt alone he provides quite thoughtful and insightful responses, he’d lie around the band though, there was a lot of tension and honestly alot of shit going around at that time period which will need a entire 30 page report on it.
Can’t hate on him since he gave the stage to literally most modern artists that got influenced by him and now influence your favourite artist. I

I think you've got Kurt Cobain all wrong, probably the result of projection tbh. Yes Kurt Cobain cared about his appearance, obviously. The point is he cut his own hair. he had a style that he knew looked good on him. His diy mindset mixed with his astronomical success is what makes him genuinely impressive. And diy is real authenticity, it shows dedication. In fact, his diy mentality perfectly aligns with his disdain for MTV (bc big corporation vibes), and his calling MTV to make sure they were playing his music perfectly aligns with his dedication to his band.
On another note, jokes and irony aside, living with your worldview seems like it would be really really hard.

He was a huge hypocrite but so are most people.
Dude is not saying hurr don't listen to Nirvana durr. He made a video about how artists present themselves to the audience via interviews. Just so happens that Kurt Cobain was very cringy with it. Kinda like a teenage girl we all had in middle or high school who created a whole personality around not caring about anything or anyone, claiming her clothes are all randomly picked in a thrift store because she just ddoooooonttt caaareee at allll whilst in reality she spends every free moment of her life in clothing stores trying to make the most casual "I don't care" fit possible...

Having said that, after going through the list I'm reminded how annoying it was that nirvana and other bands from the time and place pushed the whole feminism bit. He's trying very hard to think of all the girl bands he can with this list. Listing 2 breeders albums and Mazzy Starr in there and too many others in a top 50 is as cringe as seeing Steve Miller 30 years later accepting an award and saying there needs to be more women in rock.

I love that the "don't care" attitude of the 90s became so popular that it became the norm basically, which is ironic because it was to go against to norm. Now anyone that look like they actually care will seem as a tryhard, but not caring is also overused and therefore a bit cringy. Like a local band posting something like "yeah btw there's an album in the making" but they were making it for 1 year of hard work.

They don't care. Interviews always felt like poser or sellout shit that you were forced to do by a label to get push. It felt disingenuous and guys hated it. Almost to a person and through any era this seems to ring true. That's not an act for Mascis, he's socially inept and just hates talking to people like that. I don't know if you weren't alive in the 90's but this seems to be a trend of people who weren't there when they look back at the time, they completely misunderstand. This wasn't an act for most, there was a general listlessness in the 90's due to economic and social reasons, that had people burnt the hell out. This is also the half of the Shoegaze "scene" that people completely forget when they are fumbling over themselves to say it was about staring at shoes "cuz fx". The same listlessness can be found in BritPop like Suede, Oasis and Blur from the same era.
But holy shit, nailing Adam Friedland, Ian Fidance and the nasal twins like that was brilliant.

All I know about Kurt Cobain Is that he was a tortured artist (though Novoselic and footage says otherwise) who wanted to be big enough to be known, but not mainstream where everyone knows them. I think thats whg he hated the fame, he didn’t, he just didn’t want to be famous In the mainstream. He wanted to do more, but didn’t know how to take that leap.

Plenty of musicians occupy that space, including artists that Kurt himself idolized, he just happened himself to blow up harder than anyone.

I think your Kurt analysis has some important insights though I don’t agree with all of it. I want to say though that Kurt went out of his way to buy vintage clothing which was already normal fare for the punk rock world both sides of the Atlantic and people who like that stuff knows it takes a bit more effort to get than just going to a department store. So I dunno I don’t think it’s dressing like you don’t care. People in Olympia still dressed like that when I lived there.

Kurt was literally poor 90% of his life, quite literally didn’t have the opportunity to invest in fashion, it was just something that got ingrained in his life out of necessity, also the layers of clothing was due to him hating how skinny he was (and track marks) coupled with the fact that the northwest was cold as fuck, it was normal for him and other guys from that area to do that, he didn’t have to change because he got popular and tried to remain authentic to himself and his roots

    • @mperezmcfinn2511
      @mperezmcfinn2511 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Kurt didn't buy "vintage" he bought resale. Which was no more difficult than shopping at department stores. In fact, it might have been even easier. If you lived in a city or a college town, like most of those bands did, then you had a Salvation Army or Value Village-style store to buy clothes from. Because they were usually located in a downtown area, they were easier to reach if you didn't have a car. Kurt's cardigans and flannels were probably around 2 or 3 dollars a piece. I assume he went to department stores for socks, underwear, and his Chucks.
And, probably his jeans, since new jeans weren't expensive back then. Resale jeans were hit or miss depending on your size. But they were normally around 2 or 3 dollars.

The whole "I'm just a nerdy kid who wears whatever" is kinda silly bc everyone is doing it now.

I grew up in the "Grunge" area of the very early '90s. Is it possible or has it ever occurred to anyone that Kurt wanted more than anything to be a rockstar when he was a young teenager dreaming of it and writing about it in his notebooks. He wanted to be low-level famous, not the most famous musician in the world. But then when It actually happened to him in real life he realized how much it sucked to have all that attention put on him and how much pressure there was being cast as "the voice of a generation" like he was the next John Lennon. I do not believe Kurt was putting on an act or playing a bullshit character as the video suggest. He just got caught up in a situation where he became 100 times more famous than anyone would have ever thought possible.

Lots of interviewers are very entitled tho. The risk of interviewing someone is that you're getting into their personal life and space and if you don't do it propperly the interviewed will possibly start having an attitude or downright get mad. Sometimes the interviewer style is completely incompatible with the artist. A lot of people like nardwar style for being wacky and funny but his in your face style, his casually throwing personal data of the artist might and have infuriated a lot of people and rightly in my opinion. The interviewer is not a police officer questioning a suspect and the artist has the power to say i don't like where you're going, i want you to take a step back and a lot of interviewers get offended by it and try to push it further.
I'm just saying both people are humans and, like any other human interaction, respect must go both ways for it to work.

Ever considered that Kurt’s image wasn’t just for his own narcissism, perhaps he wanted to radiate his own authentic values to the world because he believed in them. Everything he represented was in contrast to narcissism. Just because he boldly showed it off doesn’t mean it’s just for attention. I’m not saying for sure because I don’t know, I just think you should consider that possibility in this video because you don’t actually know what was in his or anyone else’s head.
