He is a very talented actor. So many roles that he has done well. In Scooby Doo, Shaggy is the most important human character and it was really important that he nailed that role or else the film would have tanked

Billy West, Scott Innes, and Scott Menville did Shaggy too, but because of Casey Kasem's longevity with the character and Matthew Lillard's live action persona, only those two are thought about and area at the top of the list.
Billy West and Scott Innes were trying to emulate Casey but Scott Menville just seems out of place.

nah, he(shaggy) is based on hippies (well tbf, the whole mystery inc is), he smokes (he doesn't in cartoon but, that is the point) and then he eats a lot with his dog.
What anyone thinks is not important, the roots matter. I'm surprised they didn't make him actually smoke in the old cartoons when they could've easily made it so that he smokes cigarettes instead of blunts (smoking rules for cartoons back then were pretty lax).

I hated it when he was first cast as Shaggy in the cartoons. I really disliked the live action movies and I was pretty upset that they had replaced Scott Innes with Matthew Lillard. Over the years he's really grown on me though and I had the privilege to actually talk to one of the guys who was behind Be Cool Scooby-Doo and he told me just how seriously Lillard takes the role of Shaggy and how important it is for him that the character to be authentic for the fans. I have great respect now for Lillard in this role and I'm pretty disappointed they replaced him for the Scoob movie but I am glad that he's still in the cartoons and DTV movies.
