  • More than half the midsize SUVs tested earn good ratings in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s new side-impact evaluation.
    Ten out of 18 midsize SUVs earn good ratings: the Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX60, Lincoln Aviator, Mazda CX-9, Nissan Pathfinder, Subaru Ascent, Toyota Highlander, Volkswagen Atlas, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport and Volkswagen ID.4, the only electric vehicle in the group.
    Two more, the Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse, earn acceptable ratings. Six others are rated marginal: the Honda Passport, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Wrangler 4-door, Kia Telluride and Nissan Murano.
    ► These results are only for models sold in the USA

    Marginal safety rating for the Wrangler is very generous. The back passenger is not waking away from that wreck. I would call foul play if I were the other car manufactures that received a marginal rating.

      So all their sensor and force measurements don't mean anything? It looks like Murano had way more intrusion in the cabin and that's why it got a marginal rating, as the guy explained at the end.

    • @fuze3522
      @fuze3522 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Steven g they have much more room for crumple zones from the lack of an engine, and they have a much lower center of gravity due to the batteries significantly reducing your chances of rollover. Look at tesla for example, they are the safest car manufacturer out there. Beating even the likes of Volvo. The Ford Mach E also preformed exceptionally well in its ratings as well. Did I mention Volvo? Their electric cars are some of the safest out there. Hell even the Nissan Leaf scored 5 stars on all its tests. It’s no coincidence, EV’s are simply safer in comparison. That Mazda is a well designed car, but I can’t wait to see an electric version.

    • @Sashazur
      @Sashazur ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cars are obviously too badly damaged to be repaired, and for liability reasons they wouldn’t want to do that anyway. That’s because if someone bought a repaired crash-tested car and then later got injured due to an accident with the car, they maybe could successfully sue IIHS, blaming them for the crash or injuries. So I’m sure the cars are sold to a scrap yard, which means maybe some parts of them are reused, but that’s it.

    As we add more 'safety' features to cars, we increase their weight. As the weight increases, we have to add more safety features. Notice that the barrier hitting the vehicles is over 4100 lbs. How about we look at reducing the weight and size of vehicles so we increase the safety and lower carbon emissions through fuel economy?

    • @chigasaki06
      @chigasaki06 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Americans are getting fatter every year. Reducing weight and size of vehicles will be very difficult when they are built to accommodate our above-average size.

    • @tomwebber9377
      @tomwebber9377 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@chigasaki06 funny you say that because while I'm a big man (6'4, 240 lbs), just yesterday I must have witnessed 6 different instances of both men & women driving XL SUVs and their bodies were stuffed behind the steering wheel. My issue is always height, not girth, but I drive a full size plug in sedan only for the room. Safety requirements continue to increase which adds weight to the vehicle which increases the need for more safety. Airbags are not weightless (I am thankful for them) but sheer size and the ridiculous need for luxury items for entertainment and comfort are also just fattening vehicles beyond the sheer size of the average driver and passengers. We didn't have TVs, VCRs, etc growing up. We read, actually conversed and didn't know what a cupholder was, let alone have vehicles with 10 or more of them.

    • @damo5701
      @damo5701 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great idea in theory, but little to no chance of happening, as it's the style of vehicle that many people choose that dictates the size and weight, more so than the options fitted. So the solution would be to change people's tastes from pick up trucks and large SUVs. Reducing obesity in the population would have multiple benefits including health and medical costs, not just the size of vehicle needed to accommodate their girth.
      One thing not often discussed in the crash test ratings is that in a two vehicle crash, with vehicles of equal safety ratings, the occupants of the larger heavier vehicle will generally fair better than those in the smaller lighter vehicle. They have more crush space to start with and the larger vehicle will use the crush space of the smaller vehicle to dissipate some of it's momentum/energy. Another factor is as electric vehicles are rolled out (including PHEVs) weight most likely will increase, at least in the short term, due to the energy density of batteries (and thus the weight).

    車対車の死亡発生事故の態様は国(交通環境)によって変わるが、日本の場合もっとも多いのは正面衝突(33.0%, 2021)、ついで車同士の出会い頭衝突が12.4%、右左折時衝突6.1%、追突4.7%の順である(車対人を除く)。これらの中に側面90°からの衝突があるのは「出会い頭衝突」のごく一部で、一方が交差点通過中に他方が通過車の側面中央に衝突するケースである。このことから、運転席側への90°側面衝突は、日本における自動車死亡事故の態様としてはきわめてまれなものと判断できる。
    The type of fatal car-vehicle collisions varies by country (traffic environment), but in Japan, the most common type is head-on collision (33.0%, 2021), encounter collisions (12.4%), collisions at right and left turns (6.1%), and rear-end collisions (4.7%) (excluding accidents between vehicles and pedestrians). Among these, collisions from 90° to the side occur in only a small percentage of "encounter collisions," where one vehicle is passing through an intersection while the other collides with the center of the side of the passing vehicle. From this, it can be concluded that 90° side impact to the driver's side is a rare mode of fatal automobile accidents in Japan.

    This test is outdated!
    The test vehicle should be a bigger one because for:
    Sedans: The barrier hits above the floor and right to the doors and side panels.
    SUVs: The Barrier hits the doors with the floor first which absorb the energy generated by the crash.

    They should also do crash tests for the rear passenger if they’re not wearing a seatbelt. I’ve seen almost every people (including me most of the time lol) who doesn’t wear the seatbelt in the rear.
    And I also come from a country where 99% passengers sitting in the rear do not wear any seatbelts so this might be an interesting test in the future.

    This is why I didn’t buy a Jeep or Hyundai. The only thing worth a flip from FCA, is the RAM or the V8 powered cars and SUV’s.

      Fca doesn't manufacture them. They have their own divisions. Fca only owns them. Do some research before regurgitating other people's bs.
