Have you ever checked out the old Packard plant in Detroits east side? It is a very interesting place even in its decay. Packard also was first to design n build a multi level assembly plant due to Albert Kahn and his super strong support pillars. Shame Studebaker cooked the books when they bought them in the mid 50s
Wahoo!!!, so excited to finally see your plans for this ol rig. Keep up the great videos Derek and family. To my VGG Nation family, cheers to a happy safe Friday evening.
Hey Derek, a guys 15 years old and absolutely loves your vid’s. I look forward every Friday to the posts. You’ve even got me restoring a 73 f100. Appreciate your videos and personality a ton.

Hold onto that truck. A guy got bit by the bug at 10 helping my Dad work on his 51 truck and we found a 64 c10 for 1k when I was 13 and a guys dad gave him the truck and said if you wanna drive you better know how to work on them and I've still got her 18 years later

Got stuck on you with the white cadillac, now I look forward to every friday. Man you caught lightning in a bottle, please dont let Motor Trends change who you are, in my opinion, they need you more than you need them. Keep on keeping on Derek, the best to you and your family.
Derek, the car is "70 YEARS OLD"!!!!!!!! A carburetor and brakes, maybe all the rubber, and its still a running TANK without a turret! Truly amazing! Packard is an amazing machine as well.
Love this Packard Derek. I was afraid when you lowered the front it would ride rigid but it didn’t. Love the tires and wheels combo couldn’t ask for anything better. Have a Blessed One Sir
VGG and Derek and his whole family. It’s not just about cars. The way he keeps his keep it simple attitude. This outro nearly brought me to tears. Because I’m on the road to getting my car running. I have my 5yo daughter who’s never even seen my old Camino run. It’s just great motivation and lessons every episode. Truly grateful for this channel.
Been watching VGG for years now and I love going back and watching the older episodes now and seeing how he’s went from humble beginnings to such an awesome shop now I wouldn’t believe but I got too cause I’m looking right at it!! Great work Derek
I love the patina and random beauty of the old paintwork on these beautiful old barges. You’ve have done yet another amazing job on this old girl Derek!
I'm new here. I like old classic cars now more than ever. I don't know exactly why but it's growing on me. With all the stupid stuff going on this helps take me mind off of things. I just want to learn more and more and would like to have a place and space to do something like this. One day I will.
So refreshing seeing home grown projects the majority of us can relate to and do on our own. I can't watch any more shows taking a 2 year old truck and putting $40000 in new parts into it. Way to go Derek!
I think one of the biggest flaws was the overly long crankshaft limits it's potential somewhat, but if modern metalurgy could fix that, then you need to be able to design a car that can accomodate that long of an engine. That said, any car that has one is instantly cool.
Dude, There is nothing finer while doing nonsense on my lappy top and drinking a strong old cider than having your videos on in the background on the television set. Thank you for posting long videos of just general car stuff the younger enthusiasts just starting out can learn so much from this kind of content.
Derek thanks for the awesome content over the years brother! I showed this channel to my brother over Christmas, and he got so into it he's finally helping my dad with his '67 Chevelle. I spent a number of years wrenching with my dad where I could, but to hear my pops tell me with excitement my brother is getting into it too was really a joy to hear. My brother calls you the Bob Ross of auto channels, and I really think that sums you up. It's fun to watch, thanks and keep it up!
If he actually created it yes, I just hope he hasn't just rebranded a generic product which is the most likely situation. Can't blame a fella but I do hate to see him selling out.
@@Teredifa I just don't think he's wired that way. Best scenario is he showed his mix to some chemists and told them what he wanted. I hear you though, I just think his morals are pretty solid. Man Derek you have been kicking out some killer content thanks for the video's ! With no floors and the muffler delete you will need a gas mask to drive it .
For anybody that plans to remove their headliner and hopefully replace it some day with a new one - each of those bows in the headliner have a unique position in the car. Most of the time, they aren't labeled where they go, so be sure to label each of them so that they go back in the right spot.

SWEET! We had a 1953 Packard Clipper when I was a kid. Coolest car my family ever had. We went with 9 passenger station wagons once the family kept growing. I loved that Packard. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Derrick! VGG, best channel out there!
That thing came out fantastic!! Absolute perfect choice for the wheel and tire combo. What a sweet rig it turned out to be. Congrats on the shine juice products also.👍
Wish more car guys thought like you with your style here. Well done. Preserving patina the best way. Good reminding people; you don’t have to put a ton on money into an old car. It is often better as a survivor with the bumps and bruises that show individuality. And that is the stuff people notice. Allows more conversation, and there is no comparing of individuality 👍🏼
You can always "unpatina" a car but you can't create real patina after it's been painted. I have an old F150 with a lot of surface rust. The plan is to scrub-pad it down then matte clear-coat. Maybe in a year or so I'll give it a new paint job.
Yes, loved the episode but not so much the patina. Would've preferred he removed/treated as much rust as was reasonable, applied some sort of color match paint to the larger bare metal areas, and then distressed it to a matching matte finish. Finally, apply his shine juice making the Packard look its age but with a well cared for luster.
I learned to be a shade tree mechanic from my dad. When he passed in 2001 I brought home a 65 Monterey convertible that was rough. The only saving grace was good floors and good trunk. Put in a good solid year of work and built a nice cruiser. Watching you do your Roadworthy Rescues reminds me of all the same tricks I used back then. Still have and drive the Merc to this day. God Bless you and your family and all the people you inspire.
Derek sir, your videos always bring a smile to my face. You kind of remind me of a mix between Red Green and Bob Ross. And it takes me back to being a kid working on the car with my dad. Thank you sir. Looking forward to your next video. 👍👍
I’m not much of a car person, only know some of the basics. However I love this channel, the humor, family values and just the hard work ethic. I never miss an episode. Also LOVE how long the episodes are.
Derek it's great to see a shop video i really enjoyed this one, the will it run are great but seeing a few of the cars coming outta rusty acres and getting done up is equally as good👍
I've been watching for at least five years and I don't remember this car but that just goes to show you how much hard work and quality content Derek puts out for his viewers. Awesome video as always my friend
Well, I'll be dipped! Where are the hidden and unreleased videos hiding? The first video was only 4 years ago. I can't believe it but I'm looking right at it so I have to!
Weekend, snow is Falling and me chilling on the couch absorbing a cup of Coffee and of course a 1+ hour of VGG to the full lengh. Im a muscle/hotrod fan from Germany just admiring how freaking good those episodes are. I almost watched the whole channel by now and allways get really exited when there is soemthing New uploadet. Its allways good content! Can a guy get tired of this? Hell no! Thanks for another video and letting us hang out with ya again. Friday nights with your videos have been a real treat! This car turned out awesome, looks and sounds great. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I have to say i really enjoyed the little edit at the end and the commentary was extremely wholesome such an amazing channel and an amazing dude🤟 Much Love Derek. ❤️
This one actually brought a tear to my eyes. “Mustoff been a dustoff .. “ Another one for the books. Long ways from the Camaro in the garage. 110% earned and deserved . ✌️
These ae the kinds of cars that I dig.. You get that nostalgic feel when you drive them without all the panic that one might get scratched.. A man can enjoy it.
By far one the best rigs you've had on the channel. With the work you did, she just looks epic. More content with this beauty or more cars of this era. Keep it coming.
I absolutely love the kids pretending in your Chevelle! I sid that in my parents 1970 Buick Sport Wagon (Skylark). Fantastic job on the Packard and the free lessons.
Love this channel and the content. Creatives like Derek are a national treasure and deserve all the success. While network TV churns out rehashed cop shows with guys kissing each other that no one watches, we have VGG. Keep the wrenches turning!
The most interesting people are people who have the intelligence and passion to run a corporation but decide to do something simpler and more artistic (yes, artistic). Derek is this kind of person. Yes, a treasure.
I think we're going to order some of the Shine Juice and try it out on Edna in one of our videos. We've been using boiled linseed oil and she's due for another coat. Saw your recent video about having your own now
Fantastic transformation, she's perfect for cruising. Not to mention a new product for shining up old rusticles. Now this is VGG perfection, thanks for the entertainment, and have a great week!
love the videos. fun fact Sos pads are what us Alaska commercial fishermen use to polish our aluminum masts and all other aluminum on the boats it works really well. Just make sure to use stainless Sos otherwise the small particles that imbed in the finish will rust over time. love what you guys are doing!
I’m not even really a car guy. But I’ve worked on my cars to keep them on the road. All the courage you give people to work on their own cars is inspiring!!! Keep up the good work young man!!
A guy is still recovering from the stress of that ol Bricklin episode, so this was just what the doc ordered. A guy really enjoys when another guy revisits old revivals and does some upgrades.
And not just guys watching a guy work on his car...some of us women get a lot out of these videos in so many ways...his personality, humor, determination and awareness of a budget. So cool, so much fun
I was hoping for a new VGG video this weekend. And it was delivered! Nothing like enjoying a cold beer after work and watching Derek work! On a very cool ride too.
I'm glad I found this channel, I sadly just inherited my dad's 2nd gen dakota and it wasn't the truck he had the longest but his last truck. I've been working on some of the rust underneath and learned some great tricks from here. It feels to much sometimes but it's sentimental to me. Keep up the amazing work!
Hey Derek so glad to see videos like these on your channel really helps a guy and gals out with budget builds .. it's inspired me to get my 50 ford hot rod together in the past year thanks for all you do to get these old rigs back from the dead!
Derrick, that is the most solid advice I've heard in a long time, and well put. They ain't gotta be premo. Sometimes driving a ratty old going to town car is just plain fun. Life is to short to shelf'em for "I'm going to restore it some day"
If I had a Chance to just throw a rig together and call it a day I absolutely would. But since I live in a kinda stupid country with pretty strict rules when it comes to cars thats unfortunately not an option...
Whenever I am feeling down - I put one of your videos on Derek and watch it then just laugh, laugh, laugh - thank you for what you do - Love the Packard - it is a real going to town rig
It's like being proud of one of your good buddies, but that buddy doesn't know you at all. I just love what you're making and giving us for free. Cheers.
Hi Derek, really like your show and follow every episode and the Packard back. A lot of childhood memories because my father had a wrecking yard and one year he sold several vehicles for $50 for a demolition. Derby in the '60s and one of them was a Packard. The Packard won the demolition derby and then they had a rollover contest with it and it rolled over three times and completed the lap around the track before the radiator gave out. What a tank! 🙂
Good tip for anyone else welding in their own license plate floor, a good sealer to use when you do it is vinyl rv roof sealer. It stays soft and stretchy after curing so it can move and flex and it is all weather ready. Just get a brush and liberally paint the back of the plate before welding it in!
Over there in America,do the cars have to have a yearly MOT test? Here in England we have to go for the yearly MOT and also an emissions check too for.whats coming out of the exhaust..the license plate floor would defo not pass an MOT over here with them.just self tappered in lol!!! Good effort though and such a great old period car.....thanks VGG!!
@@iantowers6972 there are some states that require inspections and emission testing but most dont. and besides that most classics like this are grand fathered in and are exempt from emissions regulation.
@@iantowers6972 Like josh had said a lot of states have rather lax vehicle inspection laws(atleast for personal vehicles and not commercial) Mostly pertaining to passing emissions , Do all the lights work, does the e-brake work. Then however if the vehicle is over a certain age it's exempt from the emissions aspect of it in those states (mostly states in the northeast and west coast) then you have the other majority that dont have any vehicle inspection or emissions inspection. Very common to see vehicles with large amounts of structural damage still on the road. Though as long as all the lights work, the wheels are covered and there's a windshield and atleast a driver's side mirror there's not much illegal about it. It's just to the owners discretion to regard when they feel their vehicle is unsafe for use .
I've decided to get into cars and work on one for my son because of your channel and I want to thank you for everything you do. Finding something that I can get and work on is the problem.
I love this Packard build don't see a lot of them so it's pretty cool to see one. Every car is unique and has a story it's our job to bring that out, whether we have lots of money to stick into a rig or not a lot either way it's still art.

Hi Derek, you often ask for us fellers to weigh in with suggestions on builds. You know what would be really cool? To see a guy (or with the crew cab team) do a budget build that could participate in Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats (or similar top speed straight line event). Maybe even just re-gear and modify Independence or Roadkill for top end? Thanks for yet another great video!

How does a 15 year old kid own a 50 year old pickup truck? 😂 when I was 15 I was playing with my neighbors kids bicycling all over the place
@@rubenbraekman4515 I bad a 67 GTO at 15, hid from my folks at a friends farm. Bought two more 60's at 16 and my fourth at 17. All junkets mostly. Still have that first one though 42 years later.
@@miragesmack007 what the heck 😂 with what money?? At 15 I had 10 bucks to my name from mowing my grandparents grass hahaha
Hold onto that truck. A guy got bit by the bug at 10 helping my Dad work on his 51 truck and we found a 64 c10 for 1k when I was 13 and a guys dad gave him the truck and said if you wanna drive you better know how to work on them and I've still got her 18 years later
Hey Derek love your show i like that you are a family man and include your boys and wife in your clips. Look forward to watching new material keep being who you are dont change anything . Really like the jeep always wanted one .
Got stuck on you with the white cadillac, now I look forward to every friday. Man you caught lightning in a bottle, please dont let Motor Trends change who you are, in my opinion, they need you more than you need them. Keep on keeping on Derek, the best to you and your family.
Derek just keeps on coming through for a fella week after week. Thank you and the family for all that you do.
Our pleasure!
Derek, the car is "70 YEARS OLD"!!!!!!!! A carburetor and brakes, maybe all the rubber, and its still a running TANK without a turret! Truly amazing! Packard is an amazing machine as well.
Packards are badass cars!! Wish Studebaker didn't screw them over when they bought them in the mid 50s
This is going to probably be one of my favorite videos. This is real. Real down-home fun. Brings back good memories. Thank you, Derek!!
Glad you enjoyed it
Derek, this episode was the “Bob Ross” of automotive paint jobs! Thanks for the entertainment & inspiration!!!
Amazing how some ingenuity and a little elbow grease can really improve the look of a car. Always impressed with the rigs you spiff up.
You are the Bob Ross of these rigs hands down. Thanks for the best content that I have never missed a second of on TH-cam!
I love the patina and random beauty of the old paintwork on these beautiful old barges. You’ve have done yet another amazing job on this old girl Derek!
Many thanks!
I'm new here. I like old classic cars now more than ever. I don't know exactly why but it's growing on me. With all the stupid stuff going on this helps take me mind off of things. I just want to learn more and more and would like to have a place and space to do something like this. One day I will.
Do you think if someone mentions catalytic converter in the VGG, they'll be sent to stand in the naughty corner.
So refreshing seeing home grown projects the majority of us can relate to and do on our own. I can't watch any more shows taking a 2 year old truck and putting $40000 in new parts into it. Way to go Derek!
What a transformation! Nothing like an old rig still kicking around town
Like seeing an old guy at the gym
Love these classic rigs. I wish we could still get straight 8s. A guy can't thank you enough for making all these amazing videos.
I wish we could still get straight 8s, this was also my 1st thought and they last Obviously unlike modern junk that wont last 15 years.
Duesy!
You're going to make a fortune on that shine juice.
So very pleased to see genuinely lovely people do well. Congrats fella.
Time may prove me wring, but I hope not. I don't want to be watching "The TRUTH behind the criminal life of VICE GRIP GARAGE" someday on youtube.
I would be sad.
Man Derek you have been kicking out some killer content thanks for the video's ! With no floors and the muffler delete you will need a gas mask to drive it .
I'm reminded of all those years I drove cars with "Patina." I was ahead of my time.
For anybody that plans to remove their headliner and hopefully replace it some day with a new one - each of those bows in the headliner have a unique position in the car. Most of the time, they aren't labeled where they go, so be sure to label each of them so that they go back in the right spot.
That's not ''level 12 mouse housage'' that's asbestos...
@@hifiteen49 Can't tell by looking at it with your peeps, takes a microscope and special filters to do that or TEM. It is very unlikely, however.
Asbestos...sniff...nope. 🤷♂️👌🏻👍🏻😎🏴☠️
@@hifiteen49 it's not asbestos, it's a heavy roofing felt that's used as a sound deadener and insulation. It's no where near any high heat, why would they use asbestos?!
SWEET! We had a 1953 Packard Clipper when I was a kid. Coolest car my family ever had. We went with 9 passenger station wagons once the family kept growing. I loved that Packard. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Derrick! VGG, best channel out there!
Packards are epic cars!!
Wow, i had no idea packard made a 52 foot straight 8. Very cool.
Absolutely love Derek's positivity in all his videos. It helps me look at things differently, not just with cars but in life. Thank you so much!
That thing came out fantastic!! Absolute perfect choice for the wheel and tire combo. What a sweet rig it turned out to be. Congrats on the shine juice products also.👍
Thanks 👍
Wish more car guys thought like you with your style here. Well done. Preserving patina the best way. Good reminding people; you don’t have to put a ton on money into an old car. It is often better as a survivor with the bumps and bruises that show individuality. And that is the stuff people notice. Allows more conversation, and there is no comparing of individuality 👍🏼
Hey Dirk my name is Bill love your show don't forget the detail engine bay this time make such a big difference
Not really a fan of patina myself, but you're definitely right about being able to appreciate the work gone into it, and it came out very nice!
You can always "unpatina" a car but you can't create real patina after it's been painted. I have an old F150 with a lot of surface rust. The plan is to scrub-pad it down then matte clear-coat. Maybe in a year or so I'll give it a new paint job.
right? its like looking at an xray full of cancer and calling it art
Well said!
@@boyracer3477 I think I would like the matte more tbh. That's definitely a great idea tho to keep the surface locked in until you decide.
One of your best looking cars yet. Good find.
Thanks
Would you apply anything underneath to keep rust out?
I learned to be a shade tree mechanic from my dad. When he passed in 2001 I brought home a 65 Monterey convertible that was rough. The only saving grace was good floors and good trunk. Put in a good solid year of work and built a nice cruiser. Watching you do your Roadworthy Rescues reminds me of all the same tricks I used back then. Still have and drive the Merc to this day. God Bless you and your family and all the people you inspire.
‘65 Monterey convertible? No wonder you are happy!
That's a cool car. Reminds me of a Chrysler imperial. Big long lined car, ride like a cloud.
This is what we love about your show. Drive them!! They dont have to be perfect...make some memories!
A guy sure knows how to put education and entertainment into a video with the highest levels of quality. Absolutely love it.
Derek sir, your videos always bring a smile to my face. You kind of remind me of a mix between Red Green and Bob Ross. And it takes me back to being a kid working on the car with my dad. Thank you sir. Looking forward to your next video. 👍👍
Jesus man you described him perfectly. As a Canadian I will always love Red Green.
Nailed it with the Red Green comparaison
I’m not much of a car person, only know some of the basics. However I love this channel, the humor, family values and just the hard work ethic. I never miss an episode. Also LOVE how long the episodes are.
unreal just when i think i learned all the tricks you show me a free lowering kit. Nice job on the car. looks great
Thank you
Derek it's great to see a shop video i really enjoyed this one, the will it run are great but seeing a few of the cars coming outta rusty acres and getting done up is equally as good👍
I've been watching for at least five years and I don't remember this car but that just goes to show you how much hard work and quality content Derek puts out for his viewers.
Hell no! Derek is a Kind of a genious that just happens to be the funniest guy ever with a good Taste in saving all them old clapped out forgotten dreams of the past.
Greetings all the way from a german fella, really Liking your content.
Very cool build. This is how to have fun with a budget and still end up with something decent to drive on the weekends. 🇺🇸🍻
Another one for the books.
The Packard brothers are distant relatives and this is a real piece of Americana that hits home. Thanks Derek for all you do… 🤘
Everyone I meet says they are related to the Packards
@@SOLDOZER That’s nice. Can they prove it?
I'm not really related to anyone in the auto industry but if I was, and had a choice, it would be the Packards.
I look forward every week to new episodes from VGG. In fact, I check almost daily to see if a new one is available! And I aint kiddin' ya!
Very nice job on the old Lead Sled. Got to love the early 50's. The Straight Eights were a unique breed you don't see often now-a-days.
You can really tell how Derek is really proud about this product. Great job.
Something oddly satisfying about a guy watching another guy work on the old rigs every week. Great job as always!
Thanks 👍
Life is stressful for a guy right now. I thank you and your family for putting out this content to help me forget my troubles for a while.
This car looks really good. I love patina. It just has so much character. I'd be proud driving down the street in that.
I think it turned out great. I definitely like this look over the perfect shiny high dollar restorations you usually see at car shows!
I’d walk past a bunch of shiners to spend time checking this out at a show
Good tip for anyone else welding in their own license plate floor, a good sealer to use when you do it is vinyl rv roof sealer.
As always. Funny, informative, entertaining and heartwarming. Family comes first and your dedication to them shows it. Love you guys
WE HAVE TO CALL THIS THE IPKISS MOBILE!!!… 😍😍
This has The Mask and Jim Carrey written all over it!… I know it is not the same as I believe it was a Studebaker in that movie, but this is just as good as close as it's going to get!!!… LOVE IT!!!
Wishing all the best to you Derek, the Family, Friends, and all the crew @ViceGripGarage …
Stay Safe!… Stay Well!… Stay Positive!

Nothing better after a stressful day then when you see Derek uploaded a new vidya. Thanks for everything you do. Keep on doin what ya do brother
I am 49 and from London, Ontario......that's Canada flavors. My dad built race cars in the garage out back his house. Your show has me addicted. Mostly it's your attitude, knowledge, family, but also humor and car choices. Keep on rollin dude.
The Packard came out awesome. I do love the shine juice. Thank you for always thinking about us Fellas and Felletts who don't have a ton of dollars to throw at their rigs. I love you're attitude Derek get the cars out and enjoy them . Awesome work buddy 👍👍
Derek I just want to thank you for all the joy you bring in these videos
