  • You never know what-or who-you’ll run into In the Aisles. In this episode, Derek from Vice Grip Garage talks to “Canadian Carburetor Dragon” Liv Scaffidi of the TH-cam channel GNARLY SPEED SHOP. Liv talks about her love for vintage hot rods, muscle cars and Pontiacs, her plan to someday do a cross-country road trip in her Tempest, and her decision to finally learn fuel injection. Also, can a Burt Reynolds movie change the course of someone’s life? Yes. Yes it can.

I truly hope Ms. Scaffidi had a great time meeting an old timer guy. She seems a tad new to the scene, but has done the appropriate homework. She's certainly attuned to the car scene to the point she's "dangerous", but I'd bet she crumples the beer can bro races frequently. Dare I say, a Canadian I can respesct...without the syrup. She has that boomerish/old school mentality of "get er done before we run out of steam".

This series is great! It’s a slightly different side of Derek than VGG, which just makes you want to hang out with him even more (and even more so when he calls out the Avalanche as the worst car ever), and he brings out the best in the people he talks with. I had been unaware of Liv and her channel before this, but when a girl proclaims her love for Pontiacs, I’m definitely going to check that out!

Hi Derek - IPA came about long ago because when ale was shipped from England to their colonies in India it would spoil. They had to add a lot more hops (Hops is both a flavoring agent and a preservative), to the ale so it would not spoil. This special ale for India became known as "India Pale Ale" - or IPA.

When Liv mentioned her Tempest, it brought back many pleasant memories. My brother and I built several, a 66 and a 67. Later I had a 71 T-37. 71 was the only year they called ita T-37.
My first experience with Pontiac was my brothers 64 GTO. Just after he bought it he blew the 389 in it. A friend of his had an old Star Chief with a 421. They slipped the 421 into the GTO, put the tri power off the 389 on it. Ran fantastic. If you drove it easy it got 22 mpg on the highway. Never ran it down the strip so don't know how it would have done.
Around the town where I lived, there were only three cars that could outrun it. One was a 69 Judge with the 400 ram air. One was a 70 Chevelle the owner put over $5000 in early 70's dollars. The other was a 72 Dodge Challenger with the 440 with two four barrel carbs. No one else was even close.

It could run low 14's on the track. Until another kid came along with a '67 GTO with a 389 who was faster, Tracy's Camaro was king of the hill. Both kids held down like three jobs to afford what then were new cars. And of course they were both still living at home.

LOL I like your style girl! I've owned both a 77 and a 78 "BanditAM" and about 5 Camaros of various years from 68 to 78 and an IROC from the Indy Car tour in Canada. They are a great starter car. The old 50's cars are the best though. So get why you want a passer. Grat interview Derek.

41:30 Why can’t moms have fun too? 😂 Listen - the car seats aren’t always full! Plus I thought it’s “run what whatch’ya brung”, well sometimes it’s a minivan…

My son is 12. Me and him both love cars, he just wants to be a part of the action. And the coolest part is everyone wherever we go encouraging him to continue learning more about cars.
Unfortunately his Mom hated that I spend so much time on car projects. So that didn't turn out. But I got custody of my son. He has become the best helper a guy could ask for. When he was in car seats, we did car shows, now that he is a little older, racing mowers, and building a drag car out of a 72 Chevelle.
Moms could totally have fun too, even in a minivan (sleeper 2004 caravan with neon srt4 engine and manual trans, or AWD Astro van....turbo the 4.3 like the one roadkill put together, instead of syclone, or typhoon, it was the Momsoon.
Hope you have a Great Day!

@ 42:30 - An IPA (India Pale Ale) is (or was at one time anywho) supposed to follow some general guidelines as to ingredients and process. A Microbrew is typically anything brewed in small batches - at least as compared to Buttweiser etc. A feller comes to these things after drinking enough for a long enough time it seems....I think.....sure!

How's it going Mr. Derick? Well you have taught me alot over the course of your videos you've made, now I get to educate you for a change....lol. A 8 track tape has 4 channels, each channel has actually 2 tracks, a left and right for stereo. Theres a little chrome piece of tape hits the playback head it causes the click to move the head down and it plays the next 2 two tracks and so forth. Theres you 8 trcks total. Dang good video 👍
