I helped my Dad fix up a '62 Corvair Monza back in the 1980s. He had a friend who was an interior upholsterer so he got that done for cost. He put tires, drums, shoes, and bearings all around. did a complete rebuild on the engine and patched up the exhaust. Then I spent half a summer sanding the body getting the 1.5 billion door dings and paint chips. The only damage that needed was one of the tail lights from my sister allowing it to roll back and into a wall in a Manhattan Beach parking lot. The car was a California car so hit had only surface rust on the chrome. Anyway, Dad finally got it painted and sold it. It was the prettiest Corvair of the 15 he had. Nice job getting it going. That sound is one I remember fondly. Thank You.

They were good cars that got a bad reputation, handled good and fuel milage was good for the time. Easy to work on in the driveway. Bought it for $750 dollars, Canadian, and got more than that on a trade in 2 years later. Thanks for this save Derick, one of your good ones!
Was any heater good enough for a Saskatchewan winter? I grew up in South East Sask. First car was a 1976 Ford Capri. Good little car, but never enough heat!
A guy in El Paso Texas just can't get enough of your content Derek. I'm probably 20 years older and my kids are all growed up now, but it sure warms my heart to see you & Jessica and how you all interact with your chillins!
Awesome video Derek. Bentley is getting one heck of an apprenticeship wrenching alongside his Dad. The memories alone are worth everything. Don’t tell Mom, the universal phrase uttered by Dads worldwide.
Love seeing Jr working with you instead of sitting in front of a TV or on a cell phone, good seeing you raising him right. Reminds me of my days in the shop with Pops working on the ol tractors. Sure do miss him. Awesome video man.

I just love Derek's little mini me- Bentley. He's a great helper and learning valuable knowledge while sharing quality time with his dad. Those boys already know more about vehicles than some grown men. These are truly valuable lessons that will help them their entire life. Just love it when an engine comes to life after so many years. Keep wrenching and we'll keep watching. Stay safe and GOD bless

It's always great to see a vgg video on my notifications. The kids are growing up fast. I really liked the fact Derek's not so little anymore, little one covered his mouth and nose when he ran behind the exhausts. Such a great family. Wish we had more parents doing this with their kids instead of letting electronic devices babysit them.
I found this channel after watching your Amazon Prime show "Roadworthy Rescues" and I am not disappointed. I am not only stoked for the new season (my father absolutely loves it), but I am forever hooked on everything you do. Can't wait to watch more of your content, "professional" or otherwise :D
It is really weird to me to see someone come from that show - it was not well advertised or anything and then come here. Usually people come from here and go to the show which is exactly the same as here.
Nice seeing a Corvair, I have a soft spot for the little oddball vehicles. Thought the Corvair was railroaded back in the day. Could this be your next Road Track Car? You have the best help in the world with you. So good to see family values as #1. Thanks for all you and your family do.
Derek, love your work. You seem to be in a great mood doing this in your own space. Probably a lot less stressful knowing you're home instead of fighting to get there or if you'll actually make it. Thanks so much. Great video.
I've been binge watching your content just lately, tremendous stuff! The most real, unadulterated content you can currently get on youtube! Thanks for all that you do! Kind regards from the UK!
Watching you toodle around with your boys, I get teary eyed! I think about all the time I missed with my own boys and girls while I was too busy keeping food on the table and providing a stable roof for them to call home. Now my reward is I get to do what you're doing, but with my grandchildren. Almost all of my kids still like me and visit often, because they now understand where dad was all those years.
Congrats your kids are so lucky to get to spend this time working on cars with you. They will learn lessons way beyond their years and have memories to cherish for a lifetime!!!

I just started to teach my 13 year old daughter how to repair and do maintenance on our cars and she is loving it and so am I!! Thanks VGG for the inspiration!!!
Love it!. It’s a clean slate design from GM. Politicians hated it. That is two good reasons to like the corvair. I’m not sure this one will be a show car, but the fact that it runs and drives makes it salvageable. I like the odd vehicles. They don’t all need to be knuckle draggers. Compared to most cars from the ‘60s, this design still seems relevant. It will be a cool project for someone. Good Job!
I love that he's teaching his kids how to work on these old cars early on, I wish I had that when I was younger! They might be the ones making sure these older vehicles are still on the road in the future
I absolutely love watching you with your mini twin. It makes me think of how I used to follow my dad around and help him. He was my hero and best friend.
A year later and had to watch it again. It's freaking awesome to watch Derek do this with his kid. As 50 year old man, some of my favorite memories was working on cars/trucks with my dad back in the 70's & 80's. I hope Bentley has the same once he is my age. Good stuff, great times!
Currently Saturday 00:40 in the UK. I absolutely adore your videos derek. Much love to you and your family. Your channel has helped me through so much. Happy new year to you all
Sure enjoy your humor! Being from North Dakota, I just love the common sense approach you have. Being in Factory maintenance after being a dairy and grain farmer, I learned that many things seem complicated. When you break it down to systems and address each one, it makes it manageable and you learn something. Hats off to you for the lessons. Your family is blessed by working together. The series on Betty White is one of my favorites. Happy New. Year
seeing you and your son work together reminds me of me and my dad when I was a child being taught how to repair and restore cars. I love to see this :-)
It's just fantastic what you're doing here, teaching your boys to be able to work with their hands, and also to understand that you sometimes gotta "make it work" with what you have. You sir, are a fine example I wish more would follow. Great stuff!!
Happy new year to the VGG family and thank you all for all you do. As northern michigander living down utah it sure is nice to hear a northern accent and northern phrases/lingo once in a while and a guy appreciates the reminders of home.
Another fun revival! While I love the “drive it 600 miles home” episodes I always worry about your safety (and frankly everyone else’s), so it’s nice to see you with the kiddo and working at home :)
@@bb5242 That "horrible engine design" won countless races mounted in the back of various Porsches, from the early 4-cylinder 356 and 550 models through the iconic 6-cylinder 911 series and, in 12-cylinder form the virtually unbeatable 917 that dominated Sports Prototype racing both in the U.S. and Europe in the late 60's and early 70's. I have owned over a dozen Corvairs since 1980, and haven't had an engine failure yet. My latest one puts out 220 rwhp from 2.8 litres... on pump gas. No power adders like a Turbo, supercharger, or nitrous (On a side note, did you know that the 1962 Corvair Monza Spyder was the world's first successful turbocharged production car? "Terrible engine"). Never met a street legal 5.0 Fox body that I couldn't take in a drag race. I know that you didn't say anything about handling, but with just a few easy chassis mods (lowering springs, adjustable gas shocks, larger sway bars, poly bushings) she easily ran away from an Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce on a hilly, twisty Pocono Mountain back road. This "terrible engine" never needs a coolant flush and never needs a new radiator or hoses... because it doesn't have them!
@@bb5242 Those cars were death traps. They had an optional gasoline heater under the hood. It sounded like a little engine running. In the '70s down in SoCal I saw one with fire coming out of the back driving down the road. I caught up with the driver and told him to pull over. He didn't know that the car was on fire. Leaking push rod tubes.

This Corvair video was a prime example with Bentley with all those holes in the floor board and trunk not to forget the engine bay! We love your tutorials on how to check this and that and see if the part is good or bad and what the next step is to getting the engine to start. Good video as always! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! I have to say, I love watching these rescues. I love the old classics! They don't make them like that anymore and once they're gone, they're gone!! It's cool the family gets involved as well.
I'm really happy to see you saved a Corvair! Me and a friend of mine bought one as a project car back in high school. Learned a lot about these cool but goofy cars. One of the most important tools we got was a carb balancer to balance out the dual carb setup. Once we went through it all and had it running it sounded amazing with glass packs and the carbs balanced. Much more like a V8 actually. I'd love to own another Corvair again. So many upgrade options for them now so you don't need that crazy 90 degree v belt along with EFI upgrades with a single throttle body fuel injection system.
Thank you for giving the Corvair the attention it deserves, Derek. It's often forgotten (intentionally) in the automotive world and most mechanics just won't touch them. But I believe it deserves more recognition. (Ralph Nader's attention notwithstanding) Great job getting her running again!! 👍
My new favorite video of yours. My grandfather was obsessed with corvairs, probably owned like 6 or 7 at one point so I grew up in and around these cars. Takes me back more than 30 years to childhood. ❤️
Derek, Great video with your son! Kids always love helping their dad. Your kids are lucky to have great parents! If the corvair is a loss, you can sell the windows and trim. The Corvair engines are popular aircraft engines.

If you haven’t watched a sleeperdude video yet I highly recommend it. That kid Ralphie has a bright future too. Most guys are lucky if they’ve done one father son project like that. These kids have helped get more old cars back on the road than most men have.

I have been through a hard time drinking my life away and you and your family have helped me as embarassed as I can say... Thank you so much. You and your wife and your kids are cool af. Thanks guys. I appreciate you and your family, you gys might have saved a fella
It was a blast watching this episode. I had a 62 in high school that was in very similar condition. The floor pan area looked identical. We would rock the seat for fun as we went down the street, or toss sunflower seeds out the rust holes to the perpetual trash can below. The ignition will only needed a key to get out of "locked" mode. I rarely used the key. Once you get it running, carry an extra fan belt as those belts snapped frequently due to the extreme angles. Mine had an issue with the gearshift popping out of the socket of the shifter rod (the gearshift does not connect directly to the transmission, but connects to a rod that goes back to the trans). This will be fun to see what you do with it.
Of the three that little man right there has always been the first to jump out to be in most of the videos to get in on the action on these cars! Seeing y’all is very fun to watch and I can definitely bet he could one day be the next person to take on Vice Grip Garage! He’s learning from the best. Cheers Derek, and keep up the awesome content!
@@Rob-Müller You had the Capri over there? I assumed it was a watered down Mustang we had to settle for in the UK! Did you get the 1300cc version 😂
@@Me-zo8yc 2800cc, but still not a powerful car by North American standards.
A guy in El Paso Texas just can't get enough of your content Derek. I'm probably 20 years older and my kids are all growed up now, but it sure warms my heart to see you & Jessica and how you all interact with your chillins!
You would love “sleeperdude”u- tube channel . He gets all his kids involved, even his barnyard animals!
@@geraldlafleur7776 I'm gonna check it out. Looks like they jam on a 78 Gremlin in one of his videos... What could possibly go wrong!? 👍
He does an hour long video once a week, drops on Tuesday night usually.
It's so admirable how he prioritizes family time, what a guy
Awesome video Derek. Bentley is getting one heck of an apprenticeship wrenching alongside his Dad. The memories alone are worth everything. Don’t tell Mom, the universal phrase uttered by Dads worldwide.
Love seeing Jr working with you instead of sitting in front of a TV or on a cell phone, good seeing you raising him right. Reminds me of my days in the shop with Pops working on the ol tractors. Sure do miss him. Awesome video man.
Hey Derek! A guy can appreciate the content you put out. Can’t wait for season 2 of roadworthy rescues!!!!
I miss my dad so much when watching this .Derek is a great dad reminds me of how my dad was with me and working on cars. I love Derek s videos been watching for along time.great videos 👍
Couldn’t be a Friday night without VGG! Lil man is a mini you. Great family. 🇺🇸❤️
(son) "Is that the parking break or something?"
Derek is teaching the boy the automotive secrets he's spent years perfecting. I honestly love seeing them work together.
Caught that too
The little human does well.
Parking brake
😁😁👍👍
Someone should teach you when to use Brake and Break. .
Seeing how great of a dad you are is all worth the love you deserve from anyone Derek. I love your videos and wish more people were like you in life.
VGG parenting channel, disguised as a car channel 😂
You and your family are amazing, please do NOT change. A feller enjoys the personalities! WE APPRECIATE YOU ALL!
Seeing Bentley start to mimic your comedy without being prompted is the most wholesome thing ever.
This is by far the most entertaining and informative show on TH-cam. Top tier content that the whole family can enjoy
It was the same for me
A world needs more fathers like you derek, a feller is mighty proud and thankful for what you do
Nice seeing a Corvair, I have a soft spot for the little oddball vehicles. Thought the Corvair was railroaded back in the day. Could this be your next Road Track Car? You have the best help in the world with you. So good to see family values as #1. Thanks for all you and your family do.
Yeah, ole' Ralph Nader made his name vilifying these cars.
Always good to see your prodigy/protege working with you. He's a fine young man.
Kind regards from the UK!
yah me too its been a kick.... good stuff..
Bless your little pea-picking heart James.
Congrats your kids are so lucky to get to spend this time working on cars with you. They will learn lessons way beyond their years and have memories to cherish for a lifetime!!!
I lost my son in September and I have learned again that you can’t always do it tomorrow. Spend that family time buddy. Good job vice grip family 👍😎.
This is one more reason why I really dig this channel, a guy can always count on there being coverage on someting off the beaten path and learning a little something new. Also love seeing the family involvement, glad you're vowing to spend more time with them they deserve it.
What about other kids?
A boy knows he has become one of the guys when he hears his father say don't tell your Mom. Warms the Heart. Also I knew people who owned Corvairs and Loved them.
Derek, I love your content. I don't know why, but your reaction to the spoon in the engine bay CRACKED...ME...UP!!! Thank you for what you do.
I had a 67 when I was 19. That car was lot of fun. Had power glide trans and the 2.8 with a high rise intake and a 4 barrel carb. For what it was it ran pretty good.
Awesome video! Loved every bit of it - especially the parts where you brought your youngest human you're responsible for on the scene. You and your family truly are an inspiration for how a family unit is supposed to be. Thanks y'all!
You’re such a great dad and man! I hope them boys appreciate the awesome father they have. Imagine the memories/knowledge those boys are gonna grow up with!
Your channel is literally the only one I'll watch videos start to finish, no skipping etc no matter how long they are. I love your content fella. Keep it coming and happy new year to you, Jessica, and the kids!
agreed
and same for whistlin diesel and JH diesel and cleetus and ksr performance videos too
And the legend, finally, shoots at 60 FPS! Thanks!
@user-ug6cj7mm5z who the hell are ya??
I'll enjoy as much content and entertainment as y'all provide but family is more important. Glad to hear spending more time with your family is a New Year's resolution.
Thanks for watching
Bentley is doing a great job! He's going to turn out to be a fine man. Well done Derek!!
He’s there to help quite often.
Derek- I've been following and subscibed to your page about 4-5 months ago, I've binge watched most of your videos and love the content and humor. Bentley has a great dad! I love to see you passing on useful skills to him as well as being the loving guiding father! Can't wait for season two of Roadworthy!!!
He did the right thing and just got it running at home, safely, and hopefully won't touch it again. What a horrible engine design.
I'm very glad he didn't take this car on the road. Going over some train tracks a little to fast would likely snap it in half lol
@@bb5242 Really? ...dont tell Porsche...
This was a testament to you. You are a mechanical magician! I never thought this was going to run. Kudos to you!
Derek we love how you teach your kids how to do things and work together to get it done. This Corvair video was a prime example with Bentley with all those holes in the floor board and trunk not to forget the engine bay! We love your tutorials on how to check this and that and see if the part is good or bad and what the next step is to getting the engine to start. Good video as always! Love this channel and so does the wife!
Glad to see someone finally tackling a Corvair on one of these, they're very underappreciated!
Check out Matt’s Off Road Recovery’s Corvair Lakewood
ian roussell did a sweet one on full custom
Yessssss 🎉1 hour vids from VGG….great Friday night entertainment!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY!! I have to say, I love watching these rescues. I love the old classics! They don't make them like that anymore and once they're gone, they're gone!! It's cool the family gets involved as well.
.....once they're gone, THEY'RE gone......almost had it - learn English.......
Bentley’s first car is going to be epic! We need more dad’s like Derek.
Derek already did that, a 1969 Camaro. The episode was most certainly epic!
A VGG rescue? After the crap end of week I had... this is a blessing. Thank you feller!
The King is back! Thanks for every single minute, no second that a feller puts into these videos, much love!
Love your channel! Thank you for letting us join your family in your adventures.
I sure enjoy watching Derrick and his son work on these old cars, he is a wonderful example of a dad keep up the good work.
Love the content, your very inspiring for me to get back into working on and restoring old vehicles. Thanks for all you and your family do.

I tell ya, that kid is already a 22 year old eager kid ready for work. My goodness. He is on it! What a fantastic thing to experience as a father and especially doing the things you love to do. So refreshing. Thanks Mr. Bieri
Them 2 are a dying breed. 🥺
If you haven’t watched a sleeperdude video yet I highly recommend it. That kid Ralphie has a bright future too. Most guys are lucky if they’ve done one father son project like that. These kids have helped get more old cars back on the road than most men have.

My daughter is 9 she just got an old (04) crf70 I’m gonna have her help with all the maintenance so she learns.
Another great episode. Really love these left-for-dead, get-'em-up-and-running revivals. It's my favorite content that you do.
Bentley's laugh sounds just like his Mom's! Can't blame the little feller for laughing at the hole in the floor. It was funny.
This kinda reminds me of Vintage VGG where you just kinda jump right into something without all the preamble and whatnot
I dunno how to tell you how much you have taught me. I appreciate and love you guys!!!!
Derick, love what you do for your family, and for us. Thank you kind Sir, for all you do.
The Corvair is such a cool car, I'm glad to see you got it running.
Happy new years! 🎊 🎉
i been workin on corvairs exclusively since I was 16 and just turned 66, you have got a ton o work to do, especially floors and heater boxes that run under the floorboards, good luck I have seen and worked on every make n model of corvairs
Between your son laughing at the lack of a floor and you popping the engine bay you guys had me rolling.. Been with you since the beginning and always funny as hell ! Thanks Derrick
It’s really cool to see your sons getting involved and in the shop with dad.
That passenger door flopping around reminds me of the time the door latch on my dad's Corvair failed and I fell out as we were turning out of our driveway.
Love watching your show I’ve Been mechanizing almost 50 yrs and you have the mechanic touch and thought process
