    Hello Simon and may I say thank you so much for this video.
    Sorry this may be a bit of a rant, but a very nice one!
    I usually watch quite a few TH-cam photographer channels as well as yours and enjoy different things from each but I always find yours so calming and relaxed whilst still being very informative.
    Not looking for sympathy or anything now, just want to give you a bit of perspective.
    I'm currently in hospital 24 days and counting! Getting over COVID and Pneumonia.
    Anyway, I haven't really felt like watching all the usual channels but knowing what you do with your videos I have watched and truly enjoyed every moment of this today and I just wanted you to know that it has helped me through my day, so thank you from the top of my heart.
    I really hope one day to be able to do one of your work shops.
    Many many thanks and all the best :)
    Jeff

      Hello Jeff, that is by far one of the nicest, if not the nicest things anyone had ever written and I am completely and utterly warmed by it. I am so sorry to hear about what you have and are still enduring as I can only imagine it must have been and probably still is, a terrifying experience. As a small but non-the less heart felt incentive to keep you on the right track and the road to a full and speedy recovery, when all this is over drop me a line and we will sort something out.

    Here are two more suggestions. We tend to always hold the camera either horizontal of vertical. For long stemmed flowers, I like to deliberately cock the camera so that the stems create diagonal lines that head toward but not directly into a corner. Sounds odd but it adds a nice touch to many photos. It both creates strong diagonals and helps fill the frame. Since we always tend to see flowers spright up and down, angles can add interest. For flat flowers like daises, you can get diagonals from the stem in one direction and diagonals from the flower in the other. The other tip is to carry a 5 in 1 diffuser/reflector in a pocket. I use a 12 inch one that collapses its a bag that easily fits in a pocket. It is great to soften harsh light but the reflector placed strategically can give enough reflected light to backlight a subject.

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another one...I also have a white linen sheet that has two pockets in for sticks to slot into and I push the sticks in the ground so I then have a white curtain to diffuse the harsh light though.

    Hello Simon.
    I am still busy catching up on your videos after discovering your channel. I found it very interesting that you were using your old Benbo, which incidentally is short for Bent Bolt, which the whole tripod hinges upon. It is based vaguely on a WW1 machine gun tripod design. Benbo did a Mk2 tripod which is actually the biggest one they manufactured, this extends to around 6ft without using the centre column. I have both the Mk1 and the Mk2 which I have owned for many decades and they are both still in use and nothing has ever gone wrong with them.
    It's not often you see anyone on a TH-cam channel using one of these very versatile tripods so this was great to see

    • @SimonBoothPhotography
      @SimonBoothPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Steve. How interesting, I had no idea that's where the name came from and it makes complete sense now! I knew about the Mk2 and the Trekker, which I also have along with a couple of Uniloc versions. These were all my go to tripods back in the day, often with flash guns and cameras mounted on them as a full high speed flash rig in the days before digital. I have to confess however, they've now gone back in the shed!

    Your video really spoke to me this evening. I'm retired and this summer I've been giving time and energy to a number of home projects I've been neglecting for several years. I live on the edge of Denver and the allure of the Rocky Mountains is a constant temptation. I've been frustrated about foregoing photo escapes because I'm committed to getting the chores and to-do lists finished. All that said, I do have a nice yard with a variety of foliage, and a natural greenway works through the neighborhood four blocks away, so I'm going to plan some creative quiet time for myself the next few weeks -- all near home. If I keep my focus I should feel free to give myself some long days in the high country when the aspens start turning in four weeks. Last, I only found you a week ago (T. Heaton mentioned you) and I have enjoyed and appreciated what I've seen. Cheers.

    Hi Simon. Couldn't bring myself to get up early enough to catch the video just as it was posted (I try to be first in line). I'v had a couple of Benbos, and they are pretty fascinating devices, although a bit ungainly. Trying to get all the various appendages correctly oriented is like trying to put a sport coat on an octopus. Loved the bracken shot (clearly suffering from Pinna Disassociative Disorder). Great tips. And now....I must go outside!

    Thank you Simon. Such a beautiful, informative and inspirational video. Your images are gorgeous and when (yes I've ordered some extension tubes which are due for delivery in 8 weeks!!) I get started I would be very happy to get one half decent shot that I can compare to yours! Your video was so relaxing and enjoyable I didn't want it to end. Thank you for taking the time to explain your tips and show us what can be achieved with practice.

    Wow your pictures are just fantastic. I'm a student photographer and I'm making a portfolio I want to show how interesting insects, spiders and other arthropods can be. It's always the big animals who get the attention and I think they deserve a little bit more love. I think I'm definitely going to try to incorporate some of your tips this is just great!

    What a lovely video! I have always been a lover of macro photography, I love to get out in the garden or the countryside and do just what you are doing. I find the macro lenses usually don't get close enough, so I use them with tubes. I also like to stick a reversed 50mm lens, or a reversed enlarger lens onto a de-glassed zoom, this gives full aperture control on the zoom and allows you to vary the working distance. I also use Pentax gear, my de-glassed zoom is a FA 28-80, which I usually set at about 65mm for best results. With this setup I can get some pretty extreme magnification. I've also made a variety of flash diffusers from cardboard tubes and various other bits of junk, some of them use twin flash heads to fire the light from two directions at the same time. I fully endorse all of the 8 methods you've mentioned, except perhaps for the tripod one, as I find tripods far too restrictive and always shoot hand-held. Another method I use is to take a 300mm lens (many have pseudo macro modes) to keep distance between me and the subject, this is especially good for butterflies. My DA*300 is the weapon of choice for this type of shot, with or without the 1.4x teleconverter. I've subscribed to your channel and will watch your videos with a lot of interest! Thanks for posting this great content.
