they had to. all of the art and assets Rare created with Starfox Adventures was going to be wholly owned by Microsoft. It's why the game was rushed out the door in the state that it was.

@@Alice89chan Wait what? Sakamoto designed the original Metroid and directed Super. It's plausible to say that he felt outdone by Retro, but downplaying his previous roles in the series to such a degree isn't it, chief
@@GenericSoda except I never downplayed his role. It's basically how it went with Tetsuya Nomura and Keiji Inafune as well. It's not wiping their history to point out they hurt their work eventually and also having MSR taken to Spain was a good thing based on Other M alone. And it also happened to Yu Suzuki. As someone else typed here, Sakamoto went full George Lucas when he got absolute creative control.
Starfox Adventures had a pretty decent soundtrack and some of the locales were pretty original and atmospheric. I got the game when it was being sold cheap and knew nothing of the development woes prior so I wasn't disappointed in the arwing sections or Andross.
the first half of the game is imo superb, dark ice mine and cloudrunner fortress are amazing areas (and you can see a lot from it is taken straight out of dinosaur planet 64 in the 1 hour gameplay video) the second half is a lot more backtracky and you can obviously tell they just had to stretch the game with constraints. I still enjoy going back to it occasionally because of those great moments in between the paddy sections and the fact that it is a remnant with a lot of pieces that should've been on an entirely different IP
@@tarkekemeatballs5026 I have the same thoughts. I remember getting to Dragon Rock and being pretty bummed when I realized how barren that location was.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game as a kid - even if it was a bit confusing at times. While I still think that the best Star Fox game to ever be made is Assault, I really do enjoy this game - at least it tried something different, even if it was meant for an entirely different game.
Yeah, I thought it was... fine? I mean, there still weren't many Zelda OOT clones at that time, so having one that was merely "pretty good" was a lot better than nothing. I think a lot of people just got really hung up on the change in genre, and rejected it out of hand.
Jason Blalock StarFox fans are notoriously hypocritical on their reception to games. Case in point, the fans getting upset over the third-person perspective of Assault/Adventure and then stating they wanted more of Star Fox: 64. And then when Star Fox for the Wii U came out, it retconned a ton of expanded universe lore that was previously canon (like the entire inclusion of Krystal as a character) and people got upset that it was TOO MUCH like Star Fox 64. Don’t even get me started on the train wreck of Star Fox: Command, I think Matt should do a review on that mess at some point.
@@TigerstarLoL I remember someone put it best that Star Fox as a series is Miyamoto/Nintendo's go to for testing out whatever random idea they have no place else for. The first two games are pretty top notch railshooter shmups, a genre that really doesn't get enough love even among the already niche shmup genre. And then it just spins off from there into a lot of different gimmicky genre mashups. I think it's pretty easy to see how fans of the tight gameplay in the first two games would feel letdown by Nintendo's complete lack of trust in that style, and how newer fans coming in wouldn't understand the appeal of the older games
I really liked this game. I remember feeling letdown by the final boss fight because I wanted to fight Scales... but actually, I forgot he was in the game until he showed up just to NOT be a boss fight. I bet the game would have been more memorable if it stayed with the original IP. Hell, it could have been the Star Fox universe but with the original characters involved. Could be fascinating to see a reattempt at the original idea.
I still starkly remember noticing a plot hole one my own for the first time with this game: At the start, Fox mentions Tricky's dad being captured. Near the end of the game, Tricky acts surprised at hearing this same information again. In fact, I think the game itself forgot that it already told us this. XD
Wouldn't be surprised if there was supposed to be a plot point where he was rescued earlier in the game, only to be captured again. But just like other things like Falco supposedly helping on the General Scales fight, it was cut out because they had no time, because "we're being bought out by Microsoft, _lmao"_
I wish we got the chance to play the original Dinosaur Planet. It looked so good and it's a huge shame it'll never get to be played the way it was envisioned.
I find it interesting that Krystal's original outfit was pretty modest/normal. I wonder how different things might've been had she never been given her iconic skimpy bikini outfit.
~some~ people, not saying who, might not have had the same, ahem, sexual awakening they did have if Rare stuck with that original character design for Krystal
The Dinosaur Planet ROM leaked a while back, and playing it you can see just how much was left out of SFA; a real lot. Fans have been making huge strides in discoveries and fixes and it's exciting to wonder where the original version will end up in a few years time.
@@princeapoopoo5787 Ganondorf wasn't terrible in it... but it was a bit of a disappointment to me. First, because Zant made for a really freaky villain, with his alien look and calm and cool demeanor. But when you confront him, he's deliberately turned into a clown, presumably so we don't mind as much when Ganon replaces him moments after. And secondly, it wasn't exactly Ganondorf's finest portrayal. Wind Waker had brough a little humanity and nuance to Ganondorf. Even Ocarina of Time's fairly one-dimensional Ganondorf was at least a thinking and present character. TP Ganon was reduced to only being an evil force sitting in the final boss room, much like Calamity Ganon but with less justification. His execution flashback scene wouldn't have looked out of place in Dragonball Z, with his angry-grunting powerup. Maybe fitting for the bearer of the Triforce of Power, but it doesn't hurt to have some personality attached to it.
Y'know, when you mentioned that Star Fox as a series lacked a solid female lead, I immediately began thinking about Miyu and Faye, until I remembered that Star Fox 2 got the shaft until much much later. I feel like that whole debacle may be worth a Wha Happun? itself
As far as I'm aware, the story with SF2's cancellation was just "Nintendo was worried that they would look outdated on the 3D front, and also the N64 was right around the corner so why bother with a 3D SNES game". I wouldn't be surprised if there were more wrinkles to that, however.
@@LonelySpaceDetective Yea more or less, but still a game that was perfectly ready to ship out getting shafted *that* hard deserves a mention like this
I was introduced to Starfox by this game. While it and it's predecessors are vastly different, and I can understand people's frustrations, this game still brought me alot of joy and I enjoyed my time with it. Except the Push-the muscle-dino-into-the-failure-pit, because that mini game sucked.
dude, what was UP with that minigame? I had to put the game down for weeks because I just couldn't do it. did their playtesters just have inhuman button mashing strength or what??
I can answer why this was so hard. The designers accidently coded it where it is physically impossible to do the challenge with your thumb. Basically, it's an unintended glitch. But seriously... FUCK MUSCLEFOOT AND FUCK THAT DICKHEAD CHIEF... "PATHETIC" my ass....
I actually met two of my current best friends in grade school by helping them with that mini game. They were talking about it at lunch and I had learned a trick from the Prima guide to get past it.
Gameplay wise? Sure. But they should never do dialogue with them again. It was like a cheesey fan fiction. And then the fact that they were so much shorter than the human characters made no sense, since Star Fox characters have canon heights, which are all comparable to real life sizes. It's dumb, but it really bothered me that they were so tiny.
@@deadshotruby6667 I think the reason why the dialogue was cheesy was because they weren't fully implemented into the story, they were trying to create universal dialogue for them that could fit with most of the cutscenes, they weren't really given a chance to fully develop the characters. The voice acting for the Star Fox crew actually wasn't bad though, give them good dialogue and development and it should work out fine. Overall though, I think Nintendo needs to take note from Starlink on what Star Fox should be. I think the answer is clear, Star Fox needs to evolve past just being a rail shooter, and go into the realm of a more open world idea. Starlink perfectly shows the potential for something like this as a great concept. Imagine if they took what Starlink did, and expanded that into a much larger scope project. I feel like that is the natural progression for Star Fox.
They honestly should remake adventures but instead of ending the game after andross you could free roam and do other missions or add way more missions, I used to play this as a kid it felt like forever now I’m 16 I beat the game yesterday in under 2 days and I didn’t feel satisfied. Nostalgia hit me in the balls hard. Can’t get this game out of my head now. They really have to remaster this and actually try to make it longer and free roam sort of something like gta
Oh, I SO hope the inclusion of Metroid: Other M footage isn't just some empty tease. So many things went wrong with that title that I just *have* to know how and why. Just the story alone has so many problems, not the least of which being the utter character assassination of Samus Aran -- the badass armor-clad Super Missile shooting bounty hunter who nearly exterminated an entire race of space parasites...reduced to a monotone, subservient dork who gladly takes orders from (and awaits authorization from) someone who she doesn't work for (despite technically having all of her powers available to her throughout the entire game's story), narrating with basically no emotion in her voice for 99% of the game about babies and motherhood and her hero worship of Adam, all while being scared shitless to the point of paralysis at the sight of Ridley, despite that reaction not lining up with how she'd reacted to seeing Ridley at any other point when she'd fought and defeated him before that. And that's all before the fact that the final boss battle is literally just pointing your crosshairs at the game's Big Bad, who then gets frozen by another NPC, and then gets killed by *A COMPLETELY SEPARATE GROUP OF OTHER NPCS*, so you don't even get to actually defeat the villain of the game yourself.
@@criticalhit69 Well, I mean, that kinda depends on how you define "final", because technically, yeah, it's the last boss you can fight at any point in the game, but the final boss in the story, before the credits, is that BS with MB, so, I mean, now we're just arguing semantics **pushes up two pairs of glasses**
Super Nerd Daniel I mean, I never really considered that part a boss, and always felt the Queen Metroid was the final story boss, but regardless, I think they knew the ending sucked so they tacked on one last boss fight, which always felt kind of cheap, even if it’s a good boss fight.
Patrick Marsh Yeah all the Kong characters belong to Nintendo. One of the Rare staffers (Chris Seavor) actually tweeted that one of the Microsoft people asked that particular question not long after Rare was sold. They actually seemed excited at the prospect. Big ups to him for not busting out laughing.
The idea for "Wha 'Happun?" came about during a conversation Matt and the Super Best Friends had on an LP of Starfox Adventures. Now the circle is complete. Also, the finale of that LP has the best Matt reaction of all time, hands down.
Here my request for future games on this show: Star Fox Zero, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Left Alive, The Quiet Man, Crackdown 3 & Paper Mario: Color Splash.
Oh yeah, FUCK The Quiet Man. Like, I really like the concept and the idea that they were going for, but the execution was just...so *BAD*. I'd like some kind of inside look into that dev cycle, because, HOO BOY, the final product was not great.
Postal 3 is a goldmine of horrific development. Civvie11 just briefly touched on the shitshow of it's history but the the whole picture is a borderline onion article. Running With Scissors actually went out of their way to explain everything that went wrong and begged the reader to never spend a single penny on Postal 3 and avoid it at all costs.
Color Splash isn't a bad game (outside of being associated to sticker star, which technically wasn't a bad game either), and it's terrible sales figures are more likely to be because it's on WiiU at the end of it's very short lifecycle, than anything else.
A real shame they didn't refine what they had with Star Fox: Assault. It was solid and had loads of potential. The giant and detailed levels were impressive too. If they weren't gonna do it themselves they could've gotten Namco to make the next game again. Could've had Project Aces work on it too maybe, although they were pretty busy throughout the 00s. Nintendo are simply clueless, they don't know what to do with Star Fox, just like they didn't with Metroid for a long time and F-Zero still, and yet it'd be so easy. Too bad.
I really wish people appreciated this game more. It had a certain charm to it that made it fun despite its flaws. I’ve always wished for a Star Fox Adventures 2.
Fox McCloud is a guy who flys spaceships and tanks and shit. He should not be running around like LINK from Zelda in an adventure game. They just made him in the wrong game it seems
Honestly with how Nintendo has been getting more serious with their games tone without sacrificing the childish charm. I think they should go back to Starfox Assault and use that as the future foundation.
My partner works at Rare and it's so weird seeing that statue of Saber as I often drive past it when I go to pick her up. They have it on the side of the road along the winding route up to the main building, along with Banjo and Conker statues too!
You know, with him saying that the big Japanese companies are pretty secretive, makes me fear that we'll never see some really tragedies here like Other M, Sonic Forces, or the mess that was the Novid Fabulus Crystarium (otherwise known as the mess of a development cycle that was FFXIII).
I'd actually heard a little bit about that last part in a Super Eyepatch Wolf video about Final Fantasy XV (since that game's original incarnation, VS XIII, was meant to be part of that set. He touched on the dev cycle of that game, but I'd certainly like to see Matt's take on it, too! (Also, SEW/MM collab, perhaps...?)
@Bram Aho It was pretty bad, yeah. But more then that, we know for a fact that it changed a LOT in development, and the whole rushed nature of it feels like quite a story to tell from behind closed doors.
Most of these videos are on older games because it usually takes a while before you get any real info on a development cycle. You could probably piece together some things for some of the older Nintendo stuff at least.
David E. Yeah I’ve noticed that when he shows games in that intro section, most of them eventually get videos. I suspect he wouldn’t show anything he was unable to do. So yeah, I’d say Other M is coming sooner or later, and what an episode that one is going to be...
In other M's case though it's common knowledge that Sakamoto is largely responsible for how the game turned out due to him having strict control over how the game was going to be.
The only plus I could think about that came from SF Adventures is the sequel: Star Fox Assault. It's my personal favorite because of it's concepts to walk on Ground and Fly in the Air at the same time, that also carried to SF Zero from Star fox 2. And it's Multiplayer is actually fun, you can fight on Ground or Air! Heck, you can stand on your buddies Wing while he flies the Ship! And also... Finally A Villain Who Isn't Fricken *Andross!!*
Cool to hear the story behind this game! Never knew all of the crazy twists and turns and it's Dinosaur Planet origins. I had a great time playing it back in the day when it came out!
my mom rented this game for me and i didnt have a memory card and it sparked this loop of me renting and playing the first half of the game before i had to return it xD i used to leave my poor gamecube on aaaaaaalll day while i was at school all week to play this damn game.
I hope Nintendo brings back Krystal she added in a certain flair and was such a flirt that it feels strange without her in the crew teasing fox whenever she got the chance! I do hope that since they rebooted the Star Fox series that they try to add an assault inspired game back to the franchise I love to see the apparoid's again they were truly a force to be reckoned with!
@Vicky Rodriguez Blame the writers. The entire cast is one dimensional. Characters don't effect gameplay. I rather have ALL the SF characters (including Miyu & Fay) in the same game. I'll take an Assault sequel over another 64 rehash any day.
You know what Nintendo product desperately needs a Wha Happun? The Wii U A console that Nintendo killed off 4 years into it's life, and has been trying to made obsolete over the years with some of it's games being ported to the switch.
Now that Nintendo games are on the table, Metroid: Other M. Make it happen. Easily one of the most despised Nintendo games ever, if not THE most. Nearly killing one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises (and having yet to truly recover since) is reason enough to talk about it.
Final Fantasy XIV would make a good episode of "What Happened?" that has a rare happy ending, but its story has also been covered to death in extreme detail including developer interviews, so I don't know if you'd be able to bring anything new to the table other than your personality. But I watch any video I see about it, so I'd gladly take another.
@Makuta S-V I dunno man, looking at the story, the presentation, and everything else about it...might just be the best Final Fantasy anything since the PS1 era. Of course it's still an mmo, so that's something you have to be into. But still, damn. They did a great job.
@Makuta S-V I don't blame them for wanting to innovate and try new things. It would get stale if FF never tried to evolve their gameplay. You'll probably never see a return to the old ways tbh. Lots of indie games still do turn based jrpg combat though
@Makuta S-V It's...probably the most medieval high-fantasy oriented the series has been since 9 or 4-5? And it does that aesthetic beautifully too. I have no idea what you're talking about. Are you sure you didn't misplace a fucking roman numeral and you're thinking of XV? Because references to cyberpunk make no sense at all if we're talking about 14.
Listen Star Fox: Adventures was an amazing game for me even now its really fun to revisit it and play through it again. I will not dismiss the annoying minigames but otherwise it was a very fun and charming experience.
I beat star fox 64 every day for 2+years straight. Some of us prefer the faster pace action. When I played Star Fox adventures for the first time, I got to the part where star fox lands, i walked around a bit, and turned the game off. I suspect most people that liked this game was too young when star fox 64 was released, nothing wrong with that. Im too old now to be "frustrated". Its just an example of what happens when you change what people loved about a franchise to begin with. (like my pfp, shoutout to those who get it) Star Fox adventures could be reskinned into a zelda game, if you are into that sort of thing, hell it was reskinned from a 3d adventure game to a star fox 3d adventure game (great vid, matt). I'm glad I know this lol. All cuz dinosaur planets original protagonists LOOKED like the Star Fox team. Video Games have mechanics also lol. Loved the constant shooting, intergalactic battles, and explosions. Another example is when call of duty added jetpacks and went to space. That franchise was so big that so many people complained to the point where they went back to WW2 and the Cold War eras. That doesnt mean jetpacks suck, its that people that like call of duty prefer the boots on the ground aspect. Imagine you are watching your favorite show (like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones), and after a couple seasons of great story, the actors start singing. Then the show becomes a musical. Even if they were expert singers, most would turn it off/complain. You don't go to a gas station to buy a computer.
Let's hope one day Nintendo can figure out what to do with Star Fox. I honestly think they should try ground combat again. Third times the charm right?
I'm sure I'll get a lot of Dislikes and shit for this, but I don't care. I personally think Star Fox Adventures was a fun game. The idea of Fox McCloud, so used to using his Arwing, being forced to fight and explore on foot could be seen as character development for him. Learning a new way of tackling problems other than just shoot first, ask questions later. Plus, Krystal is love. Krystal is life. Nintendo, please resurrect Krystal ❤😢
Adventures, and Assault were the perfect way to continue the storyline for Fox and his crew. I think incorporating some of the things that Zero did, without the rebooting storyline could've helped out Star Fox. Alas, Nintendo didn't know what to really do without Andross.
I wonder if the suggestion to turn Dinosaur Planet into a Star Fox game was before or after Microsoft began negotiations about buying Rare. If it was after negotiations began, I wonder if Nintendo didn't want to give Xbox another exclusive series, so by turning Dinosaur Planet into Star Fox Adventures, Mircosoft would have one less series they own. Or maybe it's so that the game couldn't be brought over to the Xbox if it was already a Nintendo license game, so Rare had to finish it because they already turn everything into a Star Fox setting.
I could never beat that part of the game where you have to keep the scare meter in the middle! Lol. Overall I thought it was a decent game but Star Fox Assault was my game of choice!
I got this as a kid expecting a similar game as Lylat Wars! I didn't speak a lick of english yet back then, and I still remember being incredibly confused. Like, where are the space ships? Lasers? Why am I hitting dinosaurs with a staff? Who is this blue girl?
I remember enjoying the funk out of StarFox Adventures when it came out. That button mash pit challenge against the soldier and a Tricky section in the snow area were brutal.
Hey! I'm sorry to keep bugging you about this, But I want to ask you, have you ever considered Looking into the development of Sonic Chronicles? Conker is REALLY pushing it, since that game was on the N64, and was arguable still a better version. Say what you want, but when compared to their SNES and N64 output, their games under Microsoft, by comparison, are certainly dark.
@@MattMcMuscles Looking at my comment, I realise that the way I termed it makes it seem like I'm saying that you're mad about it, when what I mean't was people in general, sorry if it sounded like a personal attack. I'm a big fan of your's Mr. McMuscles, sorry if I seemed rude, thanks for all the awesome content.
Any chance we can get an episode on Starlink: Battle for Atlas? I remember getting to the final cutscene and wondering who the hell two of the people on my ship were even after going all in in the deluxe version. I felt so ripped off, I haven't bothered to go back for any of the additional content released post-launch. Judging by the amount of Starlink content in discount bins, I'm not alone.
Adventures was a harsh blow to the Star Fox series, mangling the prospect of a working on-foot formula and a needless infanticide of the Dinosaur Planet IP that never was. Thanks, Miyamoto!
I've always despised how Star Fox Adventures completely sidelined Krystal so they could push Fox McCloud as the protagonist. She went from half the game to almost none of the game. Also, I really don't like her redesign compared to her dinosaur planet design. It's basically furry bait.
Don’t care how many videos come out against Starfox Adventures. It still continues to be one of my favorite games. There’s just something special about it imo.
These channels are vultures, feeding and dragging on cold bodies because they lack an internal heat source. And feeding frenzies are a sign of desperate lack of validation for their gaming habits.
@@alexcat6480 Essentially, yes. It's basically beating a horse that's been dead for over 10 years. Everyone said ''It wasn't a real Starfox game.'' And maybe it wasn't, but regardless, what defines what a Starfox game is? There had only been 2 games released before adventures, so the series as a whole wasn't truly set in stone. Nintendo tried to branch out with adventures. Fans backlashed. Now Ninty is scared to veer too far from the same ol' starfox 64 routine, which doesn't work because it's not the 80s anymore. People are mad because Starfox is stagnant, but people are also mad when its different. I think it'd be interesting to see where Starfox would be right now is people had applauded adventures for the truly unique game it is, rather than condemning it because it's not another repetitive rail-shooter. It what it is. the Starfox fandom is probably the most toxic Nintendo fandom, and will continue to be so, most likely. Only thing that could drag Starfox out of the muck at this point is some genuine positivity.
I really hope one day Playtonic will revisit the Dinosaur Planet idea. I remember being really excited about it when I read previews for it in Nintendo Power and Game Informer, and being disappointed it turned into Adventures.
Being a young kid at the time of Starfox Adventures, and becoming truly hooked on video games BECAUSE of games like Ocarina of Time and Starfox64 (Not to mention my dinosaur obsession thanks to Jurassic Park), I was very excited for this game. I was also blissfully unaware of Dinosaur Planet until years later, and even still never really looked into it. In fact, watching this video now is the first time I've ever really taken an interest into what happened. I can very much recognize with my adult brain that all the issues with the game that are mentioned here exist, just by thinking back to actively playing it at launch. And I can confidently say that I wish I could see what Dinosaur Planet would have been. However, I still love Starfox Adventures the way that it is. I loved the idea of just flying to different parts of the planet...etc. I think I remember wishing there was a little more freedom with the Arwing, and the ability to fly up to the Great Fox, etc. Basically, I wanted No Man's Sky. Anyway, idk. I loved it. I also do remember being confused by Scales and Andross. Definitely the most jarring part of the game, even back when I was younger. I remember being so anxious about the build up of having to fight him, just for him to disappear. It took me so long just to try to fight the giant T-Rex, I was terrified. If it were up to me, I think there would be a way to resolve all of this, and please everyone. Dinosaur Planet can still exist the way that it was. Crystal obviously had a history there before Fox showed up. Dinosaur Planet could still be developed as a prequel to the events of Starfox Adventures...with General Scales being the true villain, instead of Andross. The whole game could play out without a single reference to Starfox. It can very easily work within the Starfox canon, in my opinion.
I can't believe Nintendo gave up their shares of Rare. Every game they were putting out was gold from the SNES through the 64 era. SFA might've been the only major misstep during their time with Nintendo and I don't even think it was something they couldn't recover from (maybe DK64 too, but that's still a decent game and it sold well).
Miyamoto only suggested it, not force them to. The only forcing there probably was, was changing it from an N64 game to a Game Cube game, and that's all there is from Nintendo's side of the deal here. Unfortunate set back for sure. The one main culprit though, is Microsoft getting into the process of buying them out, which forced a deadline to be pretty much the day before the buy out.
So Krystal was supposed to co-star the game with the guy. I'm gonna guess that since Fox was then made the protagonist Nintendo didn't want him to share the role. This ended up putting Krystal in less than an NPC role since she only appears in the prologue, then at around half of the game once, and then at the end to say like 3 or 4 lines.
Miyamoto never forced Rare, he only recommended the team to turn the game into Star Fox. Rare was the one who decided to do it because it was going to help the game sell thanks to the ip recognition.
Plus it sounded like they wanted to work on a Star Fox game for a while, or any other Nintendo IP besides Donkey Kong. So they did, and they were left with little time to do so, not only on a new console that made them redo their work, but also about to be bought out by Microsoft. If only Microsoft held out on buying them, this would have been fine, and better than how it ended up.
Honestly Miyamoto's input seems like it was barely more than a friendly idea, pretty much just a passing comment Rare themselves decided to take to heart.
I felt the same way about this game as a kid that most people seem to feel about Nuts N' Bolts. It was a decent enough game in its own right- interesting premise, good graphics for the time, characters with actual personality- buuuut it wasn't a good Star Fox game. I solidly believe it would've been way better left as Dinosaur Planet with the Star Fox crew never even tangentially involved.
Fun Fact: Star Fox Adventures was released on September 24th 2002, literally the next day Rare was officially bought out by Microsoft
I was so shocked I couldn't believe the people who made my childhood were just gone like that. Their Microsoft titles just weren't the same.
they had to. all of the art and assets Rare created with Starfox Adventures was going to be wholly owned by Microsoft. It's why the game was rushed out the door in the state that it was.

@@SupprimoBros there was supposed to be an entire underground section in Dragon Rock too, you can see it in the demo disc version's hacks.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game as a kid - even if it was a bit confusing at times. While I still think that the best Star Fox game to ever be made is Assault, I really do enjoy this game - at least it tried something different, even if it was meant for an entirely different game.
Yo, that's a nice Melon pic you got there, mate.
This game is weird.

Just gonna put it out there: This was one of my favorite Gamecube games when my Gamecube still worked
I still starkly remember noticing a plot hole one my own for the first time with this game: At the start, Fox mentions Tricky's dad being captured. Near the end of the game, Tricky acts surprised at hearing this same information again. In fact, I think the game itself forgot that it already told us this. XD
Somehow I never noticed that
Wouldn't be surprised if there was supposed to be a plot point where he was rescued earlier in the game, only to be captured again.
Id of rather had the original to be honest, or atleast I think. I was never a huge fan of Starfox Adventures premise.
Unless someone makes a kickstarter about it, and change all the characters into original IP...
Dinosaur Planet could have been the last "Classic Rare" original game.

"Most shoehorned final bosses."
Ganondorf!
"It's Andross."
The fact Andross can beat Ganondorf at that game is sad. Even Twiight Princess had foreshadowing for God's sake.
Don't attack me like this man, Ganondorf was my favourite part about Twilight Princess
Y'all clearly have not seen Sigma (from the Mega Man X series)

I feel like that whole debacle may be worth a Wha Happun? itself
Katt Monroe carried Star Fox 64, I don't know what Matt is talking about.
As far as I'm aware, the story with SF2's cancellation was just "Nintendo was worried that they would look outdated on the 3D front, and also the N64 was right around the corner so why bother with a 3D SNES game".
I wouldn't be surprised if there were more wrinkles to that, however.
@@phantomspaceman Oh yeah, also I wouldn't really call Katt as she was in 64 a "solid female lead". She's a minor character at best.

I was introduced to Starfox by this game. While it and it's predecessors are vastly different, and I can understand people's frustrations, this game still brought me alot of joy and I enjoyed my time with it.
Except the Push-the muscle-dino-into-the-failure-pit, because that mini game sucked.
I know right. I really enjoyed this game and remember it fondly, hope that holds up when I play it again.
It was pretty much the same for me.
dude, what was UP with that minigame?
I still think that Starlink devs should make the new Star Fox, the gameplay is already perfect for a full on Lylat System game
@@Nosidda .......
Why not both?
What? You don’t like one of the most badass female characters in video games being reduced to “the baby”
Um, actually, *pushes up glasses* the final boss is Phantoon which is probably the best boss in the whole game

The LP will always live on in my heart.
Here my request for future games on this show: Star Fox Zero, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, Left Alive, The Quiet Man, Crackdown 3 & Paper Mario: Color Splash.
Breakpoint got a shitty launch, there nothing shocking about it. Just rushed, nothing else.
I’d love the paper Mario video! It’s sad to see what the series has become
Too bad.

The only plus I could think about that came from SF Adventures is the sequel:

The Wii U
A console that Nintendo killed off 4 years into it's life, and has been trying to made obsolete over the years with some of it's games being ported to the switch.
Now that Nintendo games are on the table,
Metroid: Other M. Make it happen. Easily one of the most despised Nintendo games ever, if not THE most. Nearly killing one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises (and having yet to truly recover since) is reason enough to talk about it.
I believe that Federation Force is more despised.
That goddamn button-mashing test of strength still haunts me to this day.
At least the music in Star Fox Adventures was solid.
Well we start the game off With Krystal literally wearing a White Thong g string.. I'm not kidding.
@Makuta S-V There's like next to no sci-fi elements in FFXIV. It's all been high fantasy for like 95% of the game
Loved how Matt brought up Rare’s LJN published games before their snes/n64 classics

@@crossy44 Crossy 44 Not too terribly far, but we got most of the UI, graphics, controls, and the such out of the way. If you're interested, look up the youtube channel JUstin113D ^_^
He's a good friend of mines and is the main developer of the fan project~! We also got a discord, which you'll find on his channel if you so want ^_^
My guy, you don't just say you're remaking Sonic Chronicles and not tell us how it's coming along!
@@TommyDeonauthsArchives It'd probs be a very good one indeed ^_^
Really helps that Matt has acknowledged it's existence on this show, so a Chronicles Wha Happun has been a big tease for me all this time lmao
*Rare's* dark years include both Viva Piñata games, Conker's Bad Fur Day and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts... that doesn't seem that dark, if ya was mad about Nuts & Bolts, fine, but that seems fairly solid.
Conker is REALLY pushing it, since that game was on the N64, and was arguable still a better version. Say what you want, but when compared to their SNES and N64 output, their games under Microsoft, by comparison, are certainly dark.

Looking at my comment, I realise that the way I termed it makes it seem like I'm saying that you're mad about it, when what I mean't was people in general, sorry if it sounded like a personal attack. I never had a N64 or SNES so take my opinions with a pinch of salt, although I am playing a lot of the older titles on Rare Replay, and they're great.
I'm a big fan of your's Mr. McMuscles, sorry if I seemed rude, thanks for all the awesome content.
@@docterfantazmo no, you're good man, don't worry about it.
Lol now I’m all nostalgic for Tricky.
“See you later guys”
Lol I lost it at that part hilarious

11:08 all 201 bananas in Donkey Kong 64 in 5 hours 18 min?
Damn that's impressive. Been a long time, but I'm pretty sure it took me close to 20 hours.
Could you do a Wha Happun on the CATS movie?
Hey look, it's Fox from Super Smash Bros.
Never thought I'd see this on here seeing as though people liked this...and then I remembered this was initially supposed to be another game...eh🤷🏾♂️
It's harder to find people who liked this game as opposed to people who hated this game.
@@medes5597 there are still people who love it.
I really hope one day Playtonic will revisit the Dinosaur Planet idea. I remember being really excited about it when I read previews for it in Nintendo Power and Game Informer, and being disappointed it turned into Adventures.
I still like this game a lot, despite its flaws. Plus it introduced me to Krystal so 10/10
Being a young kid at the time of Starfox Adventures, and becoming truly hooked on video games BECAUSE of games like Ocarina of Time and Starfox64 (Not to mention my dinosaur obsession thanks to Jurassic Park), I was very excited for this game.
I would love to see your breakdown of the mess that is Ark: Survival Evolved.
Ain’t got money to suggest a game properly, but I’d love to see him do a video on “Stubbs the Zombie” for Xbox.
I liked this because of that guitar intro for General Scales, straight up. GG
WHA HAPPUN?: Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE
"Haha. They did it 'hijacked by Ganon' style." *"We maybe took too much inspiration from Zelda"* "ah"
Makes me wonder what could have been had Miyamoto not strong-armed the team into making it Starfox
The video states it was only a suggestion, nothing more.
Really feels like Miyamoto shouldn't have stuck his nose in the project and left Dinosaur planet alone.
