This is THE bargain bin game for me.
I've never owned it, rented it, played it, seen a trailer for it, or so much as a SCREENSHOT of it. Yet I see that cover and I go "Oh yeah, I know that game."

That gives a bad name to some truly interesting but somewhat flawed Bargain Bin games like Eternal Eyes and Battle Hunter.

After all these years, this quote sticks with me as the defining summation of the game's problems.
Adam was a great reviewer, I really enjoyed him on X-Play.
Nothing like x-play on the fuzzy channel two numbers down from the fuzzy porn channel.
Adam and Morgan on X-Play was my childhood. And Morgan was my first huge crush. I always feel a warm tingle of nostalgia when I think of that show during that era.
Oh man, Morgan was a big time "celebrity crush" for me back in the day. Extended/X Play was my game review source for years.

My favorite thing about Drake is that even his concept as a character is flawed.
Nothing screams "Assassin badass" like your superpower being able to revive after dying embarrassingly.
to be fair, Shadow of Mordor has that as a character power in an Ass Creed style game.
I mean there's Deadpool, but at least he has a quirky personality to go with it.

This was the first video game that Drake was in and it shows. Luckily, Drake would eventually be hired by Blizzard so he could play Reaper by putting a mask on his stupid face. I suppose it pays when you're so angsty, you're trying to be cool, have otherworld powers and can pull unlimited guns out of your pants.
Gabriel is so angry BECAUSE he was once Drake and can never live down the shame.

Hey Matt, I worked at Majesco from 2010-2014 (til mass layoffs). I would love to see more "What Happened" on Majesco games; most notably NBA Baller Beats for reasons.
Funfact: A fellow QA buddy almost got fired years after this game came out for making a joke about drake accidentally in the presence of the wrong person, and had to explain himself.

Like we're all wand-carrying wizards who could get everything right the first try if we wanted to, yet are still somehow powerless enough to have to work for them.

Majesco will publish everything. They published the entire Cooking Mama franchise outside of Japan, they published Double Dragon Neon, they published Psychonauts. But they also published a bunch of games that Matt has talked about like Advent Rising and Girl Fight. They're like a firehose

There's a Doom-esque fantasy game called Hexen and the game it's a sequel to, Heretic, that I remembered strongly because my dad borrowed them from a coworker and played for a few weeks. For the longest time I couldn't remember the names of those games, just that they were similar to Doom and that there was an enemy that looked like a bipedal dog with two heads (turns out it wasn't a dog, but with those graphics that's what I had always assumed they were as a kid), until I started buying Doom clones left and right on Steam and ended up with Heretic.

...I... did actually play Gast. I’m Swedish and I played it as a kid. In fact it was even somewhat scary as a kid. An evil clown had stopped a magical carnival ride and turned everything scary. You went around this haunted carnival/mansion and everything was dark some really eerie music and atmosphere. Throughout the journey you will meet several creepy and unnerving characters like a Raven, a giant Venus Flytrap, an anthropomorphic Cat with some major Freddy Krueger claws etc.
The most messed up part was you could either help them with issues they had... or you can literally feed them to the others. I used to always bring the Raven with me to the cat, just so the cat could kill him
Now this was a children’s game... but it was one hell of a dark one.
You'd think that trying to make Drake Of The 99 Dragons into a huge thing would make the devs _more_ receptive to calls for improving their first impression, not less.

@@MattMcMuscles Oh, and there is an incredibly easy way to kill the final boss. Due to a glitch, things outside of Drake's cone of vision don't animate, so as long as you don't look at the boss, it can't hurt you. Clear out the mirror, glance at the boss long enough to lock on to the correct head, turn away from him and keep firing until the head switches. Rinse, repeat. Boss will die in about 35-40 seconds.
And, oh yeah, the final levels weren't in the game until about a month before we had to go gold.

I bought Mystik Belle. Neat game.
Whenever I look at this game I think of mixed bag of Batman Beyond, Jackie Chan Adventures and Jake Long American Dragon except with none of their good qualities.
Also games really should consider having more "Hentai CG Shrine Galleries" that one got me good but I'm not against it.
Yeah, the style made me think it was based on some obscure series by Warner bros./DC. I never knew until now that it was game first.

Actually, the first thing that occurred to me was No More Heroes. Intentionally cartoony art style, the lead character being an edgy assassin....only, you know, not good.

Honestly the game has a cool style, Drake reminds me of a Tim Bruce design and if the game was actually made properly it’d look so good.

I appreciate the sentiment, but there are much more deserving games worth your attention then this garbage.
The bones are there. It's a good idea, but they didn't do the work and polishing to make it a decent game.

Action 52 would be a cool one for you to cover. That game is infamous and legendary for how awful it is and I bet you'd do a very entertaining episode on it.
Back in the day, I remember seeing ads for this crap game in Mad Magazine a lot. Always showing off the art but almost never showing any screenshots of the gameplay itself. And when the ads did eventually show screenshots, they were thumbnail size. Like the size of your actual thumbnails as you're holding the magazine.
You could just feel the lack of confidence in this game.

God, those cutscenes where he's just flapping that giant mouth open and close. I think that will always be the first thing I think about when someone mentions this game.
I remember plenty of ads of this game in gaming magazines back in the days. Kinda makes me wonder.

15:27 Well we finally got Double Dragon Neon on Switch and as someone who played said Switch version earlier this year, can confirm, Neon is incredible.
I loved the game on PS3 so when I saw the Switch was getting it, I was hype as hell~

Maybe this is a bit forward thinking, but I think an April Fools version of Wha Happen that focuses on a game with troubled marketing or development but turns out well (Bloodstained or Portal for instance) would make for anice change of pace.
Also whoever is picking the music for these videos has some great eclectic taste.
I think Friday The 13th: The Game & Ghost Recon: Breakpoint would make fine additions to Wha Happun?

@@unicorntomboy9736 Indeed it has, but is there enough actual development drama to justify it? Not to mention how it's essentially one loon plugging away while wrestling with issues, both reputational and professional.
Breakpoint just a flop and none of it is a mess unlike the other game they cover. It still have a gaming population and there terrible glitch breaking stuff or horrible development issues. Disliking a game doesn’t mean it a nightmare.

They made a comic to go with the release of this game. In about 2006 I went to a horror convention. A dealer gave me this along with some other weird books. It sat in the back window of my car for probably a year and died. Now I'm glad I never read it.
I have been waiting on this one for a long, long time. Glad to finally see it pop up; it’s one of those games I’ve had in the back of my mind for years as a “I wonder what the story behind that was?”

It's hilarious how Drake of the 99 Dragons and Nosferatu: Wrath of Malachi relased within weeks by the same developer, and both are still talked about today. Except one is still talked about because it's rather excellent, and one is still talked about because it's horrifyingly bad.
What about Contra: Rogue Corps? That game received mixed to negative reviews upon release, and is considered by many to be one of the worst games of 2019 and another failed attempt at making a 3D Contra game.

I remember being excited for this (even tho we were too broke for a game system) because I loved BTAS and the art reminded me of that. And then my friend’s brother got it and I watched him play and...w o o f
Every time I see this Bruce Timm- infused fever dream, I can't help but think of ways to make this work. 2 or 3 more passes in the drafting process and you would've had the bones of a servicable game. A fun exercise for wannabe game devs: Strip apart the game and make well-considered decisions of how you'd make it work as a game and a story.
This is one of the rare instances where something genuinely unpopular stopped getting installments.
Because in reality, that’s very uncommon. Modern comic characters keep getting new series, despite all their previous series’ getting sh*t-canned due to lack of sales, unpopular movies keep getting sequels, etc.
And all the actually good sh*t gets written off for tax-returns, and/ or abandoned forever.

A pro tip to all up and coming game developers: If you want to turn your game into a media empire, make sure said game is actually good.
Or at least functional.
A classic example of how the combination of Hubris, & a stubborn refusal to acknowledge bug reports (among a myriad of other reasons), can flop right back in your face.
I've always wondered about this game. It was one of those things that got meme'd in the early social media days and then people stopped caring about because there wasn't enough material for analysis. I'm glad someone spoke up enough on it to give us this video Good work Matt!

Great video. This game had to be covered eventually. Loved the UNIST music in there. Amazing soundtrack.
While the plot would make it hard, the design and art style for everything in Drake I can defintly see making a good comic book and TV show. The angular proportions and color use reminds me of things like Samurai Jack and some of Brice Timm's work. So I'll give them credit for thinking ahead with the multimedia plan.

I remember how in a intermission show between cartoons, animes and irl programs on every saturday morning were calling up random kids to tell them what to do in the game based on Loophole.

I cheered up like a sports fan watching a last minute goal in a football game when I saw the thumbnail. Possibly my most hyped episode yet. Amazing job! Now, it’s time to cover Action 52 (because of Cheetahmen) in order to complete the unholy trinity of “crappy games that prioritized becoming multimedia IPs instead of good games on its own” that preceded Drake and Mighty N9. 4:18 Somecallmejohnny and Antdude collabs when? Also, Mystik Belle reminds me a bit of A Hat in Time, mostly because their MCs have similar designs.

Gast is a game I haven’t thought about in a long long time.
When I was young I wanted a computer for my room, but I could only have one if I built my own. So using my dads spare parts, I made myself a machine that ran windows 95 (this was a time when the pentium 3 was our most powerful machine) Gast was the only game that ran on this machine. I think it was in French and I never got very far. Might have been puzzle adventure game? Had a cute little ghost as the main character and cartoony horror style that I liked. How we acquired the game? I’ve no idea. My guess is we got it in a bunch of review copies for my dad to write about. I don’t think we had a box or even proper jewel case for it.

3:12 I've heard about that franchise, in another episode of "What happened?" (Altough it was more of a "What's happening?"). I'm still surprised that this has sold more than Metroid or Devil May Cry, and only slightly less than the main Megaman games.
I remember seeing an add for this in Tips and Tricks magazine and wanting it so bad! Good thing I never got it.
Loved advent rising, for all it's quirks, I still remember finishing the game for the storyline (unusual for me) and feeling satisfied.
