What exactly are the steps to deleting some parts of the text? I found it a bit difficult to follow along. Yes, I’m a newbie Illustrator-user. Loved the video still!

Hey! I couldn't figure it out either, but I got it my own way! I clicked inside the open space of the letter and dragged down across the line I wanted to delete and released after I passed the line & clicked delete. Only the part I wanted to be gone disappeared!
When I try to add an outer glow it was black instead of white. I checked the layering of the effects and also tried to make it "screen" with white and black color but it doesn't make a difference.

my drop shadow looks a lot different thank yours. mine is very fuzzy and barley even shows. it is also black instead of a darker pink. how do i fix this??? great tutorial though. amazing walkthrough. 10/10
You probably solved it yourself as your comment is from last year. Just in case someone else has the same problem: reduce the blur and the drop shadow will look like in the video.

Do you mean to the Graphic Styles? For that, select the neon ready object & click on "New" button in Graphic Style Panel. Please share me the Ai snapshot (with Appearance Panel open) if your issue is different.
In video here, I selected Stroke Effect first. but you try without selecting any effect from appearance panel. Then you can put drop shadow INSIDE the stroke by drag n' drop. It's like fooling the Ai :D
Select the Shape, Add Two Anchor points using Pen Tool. Now take Direct Selection Tool & Delete the Segment you just created. Or You can use Eraser Tool too. Saves the hassles
You're welcome! :) If you have effect visibility problem then please make sure that Appearance Panel Effects Ordering is exact as Mine. This is very important to keep some effects always below or above. So check that. I hope this was the question about.

on 6:17 I added New *WHITE* Stroke with 12pt width. Make sure you are on the same step as mine. The mistake you are making is adding Gaussian Blur OUTSIDE of stroke. You can drag and drop it INSIDE the stroke. If your issue is persistent then please share me a snapshot of the file WITH the Appearance Panel. You can use imgbb.com to share the image.
I'm working in the new 2018 Illustrator CC which has a different layout and when I create a new stroke to add the gaussian blur, my previous stroke with the drop shadow on it disappears (not visually but in the appearance panel) so when I go back to stroke 1 to add the outer glow it's not there for me to click on. It's almost as if when I created a new stroke it just merged the two into one. I've tried re starting the tutorial a few times thinking I've missed a step but I think it's just something to do with the new layout and where/how things are now positioned. Can you help?
Hi, I got my hands on CC 2018, I saw there is a Button (Small Three Dots like ellipses) at the bottom of every parameter sections in NEW Combined Property Panel of CC 2018. Click on that button and you will see Appearance Panel popped up separately. It is same as it was in earlier versions. So If you are having a problem in combined property panel of CC 2018, then I recommend you to just close that panel & choose individual panels from the window menu. just like the previous version. I hope this is your answer.
I love your tutorials! I'm stuck on the part where you did the brush option. I followed your steps but for some reason the grey part of the knob keeps getting dragged out when I use the customized brush. Is there a reason why this is happening?
By the way that brush part is optional. I just shown you another possibility. You need to mark Start Point & End Point of Brush in Brush Settings. So that Head & Tail won't get dragged or stretched.

I love the pink color that you use in the background, but would LOVE to use that as the text color, leaving the background transparent/white. However, when I try the same process here but with the text pink instead of white, it just doesn't come out quite as crisp as the effect you've done with the white text. +Nina Barone Yes. Keep your text object with white like mine, select it, then go to "Recolor Artwork" (round button from upper parameters bar. just below Window Menu) Turn on preview, select white, Increase Saturation, change Hue slider. Tadaaa! Play with it and get you colors.
Thanks for this! For some reason I can't get it to actually change the color though? I selected my text, went to the Recolor Artwork button, and in the window that opened up I don't see any "preview" check box or anything. Once I was in there, I played around with the colors and everything and when I hit okay it just stays white!

Export Two different images. One with Glow effects turned on. And other with turned off. Then combine in any video editing software or even photoshop can turn it into looping GIF.
Export Two images out of AI. One with Glow/lights ON amd another with Glow/Lights OFF. then with that two images You can create GIF in Photoshop or After Effects or Any third party ONLINE Gif creation tool. However, unlike yours, my knob comes in front of the letters instead of getting behind, and after dropping shadow and overlaying it, the shadow turns white instead of giving a shadow effect. Select knobs, right-click > Arrange > Send to Back. or you can just drag that layer to the bottom. I believe your effects are in wrong order. especially when it needs to be INSIDE the FILL or outside. I'm not using any layout preset. Usually I remove all the panels and then I turn on one by one as I need.(from window menu) You should do the same. But first get to know all the panels.

Yes. Same values will work there. Just use Blending Options instead of separate glows. There you can add multiple strokes & glows. Photoshop is bit tedious with Path selection in compare to Illustrator. But still you can get the work done. Good Luck.
very cool until you understand that those drop shadows and blurs arent even vector. Could you make a video teaching how to make a VECTOR neon? using drop shadows and blurs are actualy making raster images out of the effect....
+Pedro Neves Actually those shdows & blurs are vector as long as those are inside illustrator. If you scale up objects then effects will also scale with it. And YES you can convert into Total vector and can export it too. Select your object > Object Menu > Expand Appearance. 😉 Good Luck. And plz let me know if anything goes wrong.
Thank you for your answer. My problem is that i need to save effects in eps10 and it keeps turning it into an embedded image. Is there any way to keep the effect as a vector in eps10 format? Expanding appearance seems to also turn it into a embedded image instead of Total vector
I've tried with both however when I select an anchor it deletes half of the letter. I even tried the path eraser tool which worked for a few but then again started doing half the letters instead of where I went
+Janel Johnson Okay I got it. If your fontface doesn't give points where you need then, You will need to add Anchor Points manually then delete the Segments. And yes, Don't delete Points. PATH Segment. If you select points then delete, extra segments would delete too.

You won't need tutorial for that. I placed two images in loop. One WITH lights ON & another with OFF. (just turn off glow effects)

No, I did that part in editing of this tutorial video. You can render out in Photoshop though. GIF or Video. Use Timeline Panel there.

Yes you can. Using Blending Options from Layer Panel. You can add "Stroke" & manipulate it.
I suggest using "Smart Filter" for non-destructive blurs.

Set the Fill to "None". (there's an Icon with Red Crossed line right below fill & stroke box in Toolbar)

Select background shape & Lock 🔒 it. *Ctrl + 2* then it won't bother you.

Thank you for your answer. My problem is that i need to save effects in eps10 and it keeps turning it into an embedded image. Is there any way to keep the effect as a vector in eps10 format? Expanding appearance seems to also turn it into a embedded image instead of Total vector

Add Two Points with with Pen Tool > then Using Direct Selection Tool (A), Drag over over that newly made segment and Press "Delete" once.

I've tried with both however when I select an anchor it deletes half of the letter. I even tried the path eraser tool which worked for a few but then again started doing half the letters instead of where I went
+Janel Johnson Okay I got it. If your fontface doesn't give points where you need then, You will need to add Anchor Points manually then delete the Segments. And yes, Don't delete Points. PATH Segment. If you select points then delete, extra segments would delete too.

+Richard E check the layer & effects stack ordering. It does matter. Also check Drop Shadow Properties. Maybe you are missing blend mode there.

I i found it ! your document colour settings must be CMYK. It should be RGB.
