    I spent 4 years in outboard school. get the genuine service manual for your motor. maybe think of it this way, everything comes apart and goes back together in layers. a water separating fuel filter is like an insurance addition to your fuel supply line. Those NGK spark plugs are the best, good choice. when diagnosing problem remember engine needs spark, get a cheap inline spark checker, fuel, and compression. ive found that yamalube is top notch and mixed properly for a two cycle outboard will prevent carbon build up and help engine live longer. get a can of OMC engine tuner to melt carbon build up and to clean things like spark plugs and carburetors if ever needed. i hope this helps a bit.

      *_ And let's not forget the humid climate Shawn experiences. If there's ethanol in his fuel supply, MAN, that invites moisture (i.e., water) into the fuel system. Judging by what the Generator innards looked like when he cleaned it out, it might just be the same problem with the outboard motor. _*

      Great advice, especially with the service manual. Loads of info and diagrams in those with no internet needed. Also being so far out in the woods, I’d recommend always keep extra plugs, gaskets and 2 stroke oil on hand. The disposables of course. Maybe even some cheap Amazon replacement carbs. They’ll help you in a bind and it’ll all save a trip into town with having some stock on hand.

    • @24hobbes24
      @24hobbes24 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      If he is changing plugs to get it to run, perhaps the auto oiler is overfeeding the 2 stroke mix fouling the plugs constantly? Keeping 2 or 4 extra plugs around in a dry box wouldn't be a bad idea.

    What I love about all of this , are the challenges. A cabin, comfort, heat, comfort food, stews, soups all homemade. Simplicity. I love being creative. In the Spring a garden, a pet. The quiet nights, the stars, The fire crackling.The seasons. The rain, the snow, the wind, the summer nights. Perhaps in my next life. Enjoy . Because you deserve it.

    When you shut down the generator , place the fuel line on the off selection on the fuel switch then let it run out of fuel in the line, and it prevents this from happening . I learned it the hard way ...

    Hey bud take a min and look around look at what u already accomplished, I just spent a day in my office grid woods and it was a recharge just in that I am trying to get more time out but with health problems I am limited in how fast I can get things done , but every chance we get it is a experience! You are stressing about not being in a groove or no progress but that not the case you are making progress look at when you set foot there you could not move two feet without walking into brush or blowdown’s now you have a yard. You are setting a timeline based off your old life what are you rushing for or getting upset about how long things are taking you? How ever long it takes is your time line now you only have to live on your schedule we love watching the experience and you show us the experience you don’t sugar coat it we watch your channel bc it is real we hit same walls in our travels and it nice to see we are not alone that these things happen to everyone we will keep wasting your experience bc of the natural raw footage we feel more involved with you when we see you experience the same little problems we run into that blow a entire day of planned work bc of a wrong size screw or spark plug and now need to do the whole trip back into town for the right one that just added days to the job,cool thing is you are your own boss and that the only schedule you need to keep look around at the beautiful surroundings take a deep breath and try to relax, we will watch your episodes when they hit and will enjoy them just as much we don’t care if it is the same time every week if it can be great but if not just drop it when you can don’t sweat it please enjoy what you are doing and don’t let us viewers become a burden or a hindrance if you let the you tube cause stress and problems it will make content worse and you regret in doing it and I would hate to see that you are one of my favorite channels and I just want to continue to watch your journey I don’t care about a schedule I just want to see what happenes . Sorry for the rant I just see you getting stressed out about the you tube episodes and just want to say we will watch when they drop we don’t care as long anyone keep us up to date thanks bud good luck

    Hey Shawn, IMPORTANT TIP. I'm a graphic designer since 2005. I use a Lenovo laptop which is spendy but worth it.
    Those laptops you're buying will last longer if when you're done editing, wrap it up in like your sleeping bag or get a 2 gallon ziplock bag to put it in. Condensation gets inside the laptop and can cause a miryad of problems.
    I left my Dell in my car overnight a bunch years ago and the next day I had nothing but problems.
    Wrap it or cover it Shawn, that'll help.
    Thanks for the videos too, you're doing what most of us want to. I suffer from neuropathy, so I am stuck near a hospital. Take care Bro.

    When you’re putting a heat shield, you want to have a standoff from the wall, and a gap at the floor - what keeps it from burning the wall is the air rushing behind taking the heat away before it gets transmitted to the wall. Even if it doesn’t start a fire, it will certainly melt your Vapor barrier.

    Your situation demands extreme organization, layers of back-up plans with redundancy in multiples. Prioritize most every task, accomplishing even small tasks at least every day to keep a sense of moving forward. Budget restraints will always factor in but your transportation needs are a must along with basic life needs. Plan ahead in the evening what absolutely needs to get done each day. Keep track of materials and supplies that need replenishing. When you’re at your wits end, use that anger to chop more firewood for that long cold winter. Tomorrow is another beautiful rewarding day. 😢😮😅😊😊😊😊😊😊😊

      And to help clean the carburetor about every 4 to 5 tanks of fuel I will spray about a 20% of a can of carburetor cleaner in the fuel tank on generator on my lawnmower anything that will sits you won’t have to pull carburetor off I have sprayed in my father-in-law‘s generator that was running rough after about 30 minutes with it running under a load it went back to running like a camp a old man showed me that went I was about 14 when I was into finding old gokarts and 3 wheelers I would find them work on them and sell them was a good way to make money as a kid really easy fix for less then a quarter to fix and get going I would do that to a lot of 3 wheelers for a quarter would make a quick 20 to 30 bucks to fix a gokart or 3 wheeler I keep that secret for a long time

    If you are charging the laptop on the gas generator it may be putting out "dirty power". Generators are notorious for high THD or total harmonic distortion, which is bad for electronics. It might be better to charge off of the bluetti.

      if you use the generator to charge the battery/power bank, whilst running the laptop off the battery/power bank. will it act as a surge protector (please correct me if I am wrong)?

  • @ispringle
    @ispringle 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    If you didn't figure out the laptop, it might be that generator power is pretty "dirty". Run the genny to your powerbank and then charge off the powerbank. Electronics like a laptop can be picky about their power.

  • @kevinharding2099

    Even when you live in a city the mechanics and electronics are maddening when they fail. We live in a society where we are dependent on others to fix things we don’t understand. This dependency creates not only frustration, but also takes time and money. You cannot simplify these elements of your life so you need to learn as much as you can. Hard work cannot overcome a lack of knowledge.

    As a mechanic, my experience with fuel especially on stationary and power sports equipment, you need to use premium fuel with no ethanol. ethanol will grab up to its own weight in water and separate out creating issues with both the spark plug life and gunk build up in the carburetor. this will create hard start, poor running and no start issues. shell, petro-canada and chevron premium fuel have been best. hopefully this helps

  • @dirtbikeheaven1129
    @dirtbikeheaven1129 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

    One thing you might consider for your gasoline devices. Use non ethanol gas if it’s available. It will be more expensive than regular gas but it should solve all your starting problems with your boat motor, generator and weed eater.

    A few things you may want to look at if you’re getting smoke from your wood stove in the cabin. The first thing is the you already figured out - run the stove pipe as straight as possible, bends impede the flow. Second, the longer the pipe, the stronger the draft, pulling air into stove and up the chimney. Third, it’s very important to have the chimney taller than the peak of the roof. If the chimney outlet is below the peak, the flow of smoke may be impeded if there’s a wind blowing from the other side of the peak, an eddy current may form on the downwind (chimney) side of the peak creating a positive pressure zone at the chimney outlet. (The same thing happens when the river flows over a rock - it’s smooth flow on the upstream side of the rock and turbulent flow on the downstream side. Your cottage is the “rock”.)

    I've worked on small engines for close to 40 years, and I've said this before, and I'll say it again " DON'T USE ETHENAL FUEL IN 2 OR 4 CYCLE SMALL ENGINES " and I would suggest a cover on your boat motor and tank and generator too if your not putting it in or under cover . All it takes to kill an engine from running is water the size of the point on a needle !!!I highly suggest keeping and using some water treatment for fuel like Heat , the yellow or red bottle .I think the red one is isopropyl alcohol. I know premium ethanol free fuel is more expensive, but not if you take away all your going through . It may not be a sure cure but it can't hurt!!!!!😊 i remember telling you to get two or three extra spark plugs and filters for your small engines , running to town every day is killing your budget and build .

    Your problems with the boat and generator might go away if you use rec fuel. But as one person said. Tutn off or disconnect fuel and run till engines stop. Also, I'd consider building a way use a come-along to ratchet up ramps and away from the river. Just a thought.

    Thanks for the update, you are really up against it at the moment. You have to prioritise what you need for winter and you keep getting thrown with all these extras. Hoping that you can get a break for a change, really enjoying following along. Take care and remember why you're out there.👍❤️

    One of the reasons I enjoy your channel is because you have hardships. If people have never spent time away from civilization, or even lived 10 miles from town, they don't understand the frustration of forgetting something or needing another part and having to stop and waste half a day going back to town. Those of us that have, appreciate the honesty of your struggle.

    Liveaboard Yachtie here, Add couple of capfull's of Methylated Spirits to each tankfull of fuel as it encapsulates the water droplets in the carbie and burns them as normal rather than blocking the main jet. Close the vent on your outboard tank and disconnect the fuel line at the engine after each use to stop moisture entering the fuel thru the carbie. A toolkit kept in the boat with spares could save a long walk.

    I was very happy for you when that generator started! Then the boat motor too!!! Alas with ups there must be downs or up wouldnt actually feel like up I guess. I really hope you can get that boat working steadily for you. I dont know if that thing has an oil pump on it or not but we took everyone we ever had off our small motors and just used mixed gas in the tank. Never have an under or over oiling issue after that. The silver lining is that as you said you already know so much more about small engines than you did when you started and think of what you will know in 5 or 10 years! Keep your head up and keep warm my friend!

    Hi Shawn,
    Glad to see the canoe is saving the frigid swims. Few things can be as frustrating as machines, except maybe people. I speak with some experience as I'm old and been fixing stuff for 40 years. I'm licensed auto truck and Marine small engine by the way.
    Look for an email from me with my thoughts.

    Your motor is only running on one cylinder when it’s not running correctly it’s losing spark on one cylinder intermittently, the power pack is going bad. It is the part that controls spark to the cylinders, it’s not that hard to replace you just have to unhook a bunch of wires from the old one and hook them back up to the new one.

    Ethanol fuel sitting in carbs eats the internals Shawn....run the fuel out of anything that is going to sit for any length of time. The guy before you didn't do that. Draining tanks in something that sits for longer period is the best also, it attracts moisture and will cause damage too. Thx for your videos Shawn......makes you think about the people in the past in B.C.that endured without even the few convienences ....holy......Living and learning is what you are doing......:-)) Good stuff....

    Fuel is not what it used to be. If you going to keep it any amount of time you need to treat it. And use a funnel that removes the water. You can run Fuel system cleaner once in a while but be careful not to rely on it to much. It can also cause problems. Good luck brother.

    Shawn , you really should start stocking non perishable food and getting wood ready . It's not a matter of if you get stuck, on the property in the wint3r , it's a matter of when . When the snow starts staying , it will come fast and lots of it , and it will hit -30 at least this winter .

    Love the channel man ! One thing I would recommend is having many spare spark plugs for your boat because if your 2 stroke engine is running rich like it looks like it is, It will fowl spark pugs regularly. Even if they don't look that bad new plugs will always make a big difference
