  • A customer brought me a Husqvarna 359 chainsaw complaing that it runs bad. I decided to go through the carb and get this old chainsaw running decent again. #smallenginerepair

    Looks like a walbro. Lack of a working vent was a problem. Drilling a hole in the diaphragm cover fixed it.

    You know what solves the running problem of those Walbro HDA199's is to drill a vent hole in the side of the plate that covers the diaphragm. You often see it on Walbros no idea why they didn't on these but it fixed my Husqvarna 357 carburetors completely.

      I'll take a closer look at that but I have to wonder why it ran fine for the first fifteen or twenty years. There must be something else going on. Thanks for watching!

      На Хускварнах 257/262 карбюратор Вальбро HDA120- и там есть это компенсационное отверстие!

    Years ago my 359 had the same issue. I did all of this and, after it ran fine for a while, the problem would return. I finally replaced the carb with a Zama Z3 EL42 and it has run like a champ for years..

    Thanks, great information. Customer might as well replace parts that are done during a tuneup. I got lucky by pressurizing a generator gas tank and working the float up and down. Got the dirt loose and start working again. Take care

    Great video man! I had one question. Was that the original carb you were working on ,that came on the 359?
    Or was that the updated one ? Helpful video, I appreciate it!

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thats a great question. I think the updated carb is a Zama Z3 EL42 and the carb I'm working on is a Walbro, presumably making it original.

    So I finally got a better compression tester in. My 460 Rancher tested 150 PSI, the 562xp I rebuilt recently consistently tested at 125 PSI, and the brand new 550 xp Mark II tested at 110 PSI...the last two don't seem quite right to me, do these saws need to be hot when I perform this test?

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  ปีที่แล้ว

      No they should be cold for testing. I think the new 550's I've tested usually come in around 135 before broke in.

  • @f9qo
    @f9qo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Might you have any suggestions on how to increase fuel going into the cylinder when starting. It takes ten pulls or so to get the saw to kick over, and then it runs perfectly fine. When warm it starts quick, when cold the plug stays dry until that many pulls. The carb has been disassembled and looks in good shape with good diaphragms, metering and pump. I tried shortening the fuel line and also raising the metering lever above spec (grasping at straws), but there was no improvement. Thanks!

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I start a lot of fresh rebuilt carbs and new equipment. if it doesn't have a primer bulb it takes almost exactly 10 pulls to prime the carb and start. Old timers would tell you to get a squirt bottle of premix, remove the air filter and give it a shot. It will start right up. You could check your pulse hose and also if the choke is closing completly. You might also have a condition where the fuel leaks away, like through a weak main nozzle check valve. Pressure test the carb.

    • @f9qo
      @f9qo 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good suggestions, thanks. I thought about adding a carb with a primer bulb, but some hassle to jury-rig the thing no doubt. The choke is ok, I'll take a look at the pulse hose.

    I have a 440 I just bought for $10, I put a Chinese Amazon carb on it but still have the original, is it worth cleaning the original for more long term reliability?

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If the aftermarket carb works properly you're probably ok but it never hurts to have a spare.

    How many times have you refreshed a carb that you wound up having to replace the carburetor? Seems to be happening more frequently for me.

    • @TheGreasyShopRag
      @TheGreasyShopRag  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It happens but you can make it happen less if you're willing to bail out early. Don't think you can save them all. If it won't prime, I bail. If its rusty inside, I'm out. If it runs erratic then maybe but if the OEM replacement costs less than a half hour labor then I lean towards replacement. If its just flooding, not getting fuel at all or sluggish then I go for it.

      Theres no good reason for it. I guess its just my way of starting a video. Lately a lot of people are getting worked up about it but the bench is custom built and makes a lot of noise due to its single point mounting. Decide for yourself:
