I love the flavor in the match. Emrakul versus Liliana Even in the colors Liliana, even though a black walker, being in black white shows the villian fighting for a purpose. It also show that black doesn't mean evil. Emrakul with temur, Green and Red representing the blind destruction of the Eldrazi, and the blue representing that there is more than just kill and devour among the titans. Its just great

It was definitely not an optimal version- wrong removal choices, wrong numbers spread across side and main, etc. The fact that he beat Emrakul was adorable but less based on the deck. However, after undergoing fine-tuning, the deck is now a pillar of Standard.
Dies to tragic arrogance, planar outburst, ruinous path, declaration in stone, foul tongue invocation. Not to mention you can straight up counter it, and there is now a 4 mana counter spell that also counters abilities on the stack in Summary Dismissal. There are also several act of treason spells that allow you to take control of their emrakul and kill them with it. I wouldn't even say half situations with this card are unbeatable. If you've watched all of the PT you would of seen several times where people lost while resolving 1 even 2 emrakuls. I think you're being a bit silly, comrade.
the problem is most answers can't be played reliably on emrakul cuz most of them would be played on your own things or wasted during the turn it takes from you and non-instants that can be played during the opponent's turn are limited.
I was one of the few who believed she was a great card. Everybody else hyped Tamiyo which I thought was meh. People tends to think that Tamiyos emblem is OP, not really realizing that it needs card draw to even be useful. also, when (and if) you manage to pull it of, mana usually is no issue anyway.

I've been watching LSV on coverage since pro tour gatecrash and have never ever once thought he was anything except the best commentator and best personality by far. Although Simon Gotten is my favorite player (pro tour champion as well) and he does fantastic commentary too, I can at least see why some folks wouldn't like him. He does have a German accent that could trip up some stereotypically ignorant Americans, and he is extremely analytical about the game, making everything seem like a pure calculation. But I literally cannot think of a reason anyone would dislike what LSV puts forward on coverage lmfao

Game 3: Owen gets two lands in his opening hand and doesn't see the third land until turn 6, by which point he's facing down a Gideon. There, I just save you fifty-five long boobless minutes.
The commentating seems to be done from the perspective "Turtenwald is the hero, Blohon is just the obstacle". I don't know whether it's American nationalism, or the desire to be always pro-the more established player in order to "prove" that Magic must be more a game of skill. I suspect it's about 30-70

I can't imagine looseing in the finals like that, but he's Owen Turtenwald, this very tournament he was announced to be entering the Hall of Fame, he became Player of the Year which many thought he wouldn't do and yeah, he came 2nd in the Pro Tour, no matter how much that stings, you have to be walking away extremely happy.
I stopped following tournament coverage a couple years ago. Is Owen a douchecanoe or something? I've seen a number of people rooting against him and it feels like they have a good reason.
He's just an asshole to his opponents on coverage. For example, in the last round of the Swiss, the guy he played against was trying to be friendly and talk a little while they played. He didn't even acknowledge him. By acting this way, he is basically advocating for this behavior. Players who are newer to the game and that look up to the pro's will think that's how you are supposed to act while playing competitive Magic. You can be serious and not come across as being a dick. Look at Reid Duke and LSV. I've never heard a bad story about either of them, and both of them are extremely successful.

It was a tough choice, but I think you're right; I wouldn't have kept that hand either. But then, I'm not a pro, so I can't really say that my decision would've been better.
I would have been at table flipping honestly. Every magic player has been there with the two lands and just needing the deck to cooperate. I find it annoying enough at FNM, I can't imagine how bad it must feel to lose when it costs you $20,000 and a pro tour title.
In Luis vs Turtenwald, Turtenwald miss summoned emrakul twice, and never got punished. He was in fact given a warning that should he mess up one more time he will be given a loss. But those 2 times he miss summoned Emrakul may have actually led to Luis losing. You see in this Pro Tour 1 turn could change everything. and he did it TWICE
Did you even watch the game? It is the difference of having three lands untapped or four, not the difference between being able to cast it or not. You do no get punished for making play mistakes, you get warnings. He got two warnings. What more do you expect?
It is because of the false god identities on Zendikar. Emeria was female on Zendikar, while Cosi and Ula were male. So Emrakul is called she still, while Kozilek and Ulamog are he.
I will say this i prefer standard now to standard back when infect was standard because all you saw was the same 4 decks going against each other. Now you see 5 to 6 different decks some have similar play styles while others are completely different

for a deck running 21 lands, owen got majorly screwed. I built a carbon copy of owen's deck to try out and i love it, but im wondering if there is a way to make better use of the tools provided. i feel like you spend the first 5 turns or so ramping and card filtering, but in a deck that can hit delirium as early as turn 2, i think theres a better use of all of the cards. first of all, with all that extra mana, hes not running a single damn copy of lumbering falls, or evolving wilds. he runs like 15 cards that can filter through cards in his deck to get lands, and still gets mana screwed. play a couple evolving wilds to filter even more lands out, play a couple lumbering falls to defend when you simply only have lands. secondly, you have delirium so hard. why not run a couple traverse the ulvenwald? i think cutting a couple cards for it because 1) you can hit delirium on like turn 2 or 3 so fetching up a creature is pretty dope, especially when your whole strategy is based on tossing M&Mrakul into play. 2) even without delirium, it fetches up a basic for you to ensure you can cast your other cards. when you're playing 21 lands, its not a bad idea to have cards that say "go get a land". lets also consider that hitting delirium before turn 4 basically always means that you may as well play like 1 more ishkanah. now, i know what you're thinking "but if you play more ishkanah, they all just die to kozilek's returns that you recast D:" but ishkanah does something like return does, in that it provides a defense against an opponents board state. honestly, in playtesting, throwing spiders into play helps stall the game just as long, if not longer, than a kozi's return. if you're playing against a midrange or aggro deck, you'll see your opponent trying to figure out "oh man how do i attack into this so that i'm getting advantage" while the whole time, you're thinking "if they do anything that puts me behind, i'll just flash in my eldrazi and blow everything else up." anyway, coax from the blind eternities is actually a playable card, which is neat.
Owen is amazing. Finals same time as hall of fame. He deserves it. He plays with class. All around good ambassodar of magic. Congrats Owen. I really mean it
i think they missed a trigger. when you cast emrakruel, you take your opponents turn. so you go through the same motions as your opponent would. So the trigger i think that was missed was the liliana emblem unless it was the zombie he saced and i just missed it
Owen will mature, he is just young and too focused on what he could have achieved as opposed to what he already has achieved. Peter Chapin has this sort of mentality too, 2nd place to some people is more painful than dead last, to each their own I suppose. edit: and to be fair, owen had terrible draws all 3 games, especially that final one.

Owen casts a Kozilek's Return dealing 2 damage to each creature. I am new to the game and am wondering, how they were destroyed when they had Indestructible on them? Was it because the Avacyn was not yet resolved and the kozilek killed them before the avacyn was able to protect them?
702.12b A permanent with indestructible can’t be destroyed. Such permanents aren’t destroyed by lethal damage, and they ignore the state-based action that checks for lethal damage (see rule 704.5g).

To be fair, Turtenwald got pretty fucked on the draw for game one and especially game three.
Especially game 3, but it was his decision for keeping his hand.
It was a tough choice, but I think you're right; I wouldn't have kept that hand either. But then, I'm not a pro, so I can't really say that my decision would've been better.
I would have been at table flipping honestly. Every magic player has been there with the two lands and just needing the deck to cooperate. I find it annoying enough at FNM, I can't imagine how bad it must feel to lose when it costs you $20,000 and a pro tour title.

In Luis vs Turtenwald, Turtenwald miss summoned emrakul twice, and never got punished. He was in fact given a warning that should he mess up one more time he will be given a loss. But those 2 times he miss summoned Emrakul may have actually led to Luis losing. You see in this Pro Tour 1 turn could change everything. and he did it TWICE
Maybe luis would have still lost. But I still call bullshit that he got out of it.
Did you even watch the game? It is the difference of having three lands untapped or four, not the difference between being able to cast it or not.
You do no get punished for making play mistakes, you get warnings. He got two warnings. What more do you expect?

It is because of the false god identities on Zendikar. Emeria was female on Zendikar, while Cosi and Ula were male. So Emrakul is called she still, while Kozilek and Ulamog are he.
I really liked new lilliana just because she was a 3 mana Walker and I've learned my lesson with underestimating those back when Domri kicked my ass

Standard is so trash that a -2/-1 plus 1 won the pro tour. Yeah... I wouldn't say that says anything good about standard.
I will say this i prefer standard now to standard back when infect was standard because all you saw was the same 4 decks going against each other. Now you see 5 to 6 different decks some have similar play styles while others are completely different

for a deck running 21 lands, owen got majorly screwed. I built a carbon copy of owen's deck to try out and i love it, but im wondering if there is a way to make better use of the tools provided. i feel like you spend the first 5 turns or so ramping and card filtering, but in a deck that can hit delirium as early as turn 2, i think theres a better use of all of the cards. first of all, with all that extra mana, hes not running a single damn copy of lumbering falls, or evolving wilds. he runs like 15 cards that can filter through cards in his deck to get lands, and still gets mana screwed. play a couple evolving wilds to filter even more lands out, play a couple lumbering falls to defend when you simply only have lands. secondly, you have delirium so hard. why not run a couple traverse the ulvenwald? i think cutting a couple cards for it because 1) you can hit delirium on like turn 2 or 3 so fetching up a creature is pretty dope, especially when your whole strategy is based on tossing M&Mrakul into play. 2) even without delirium, it fetches up a basic for you to ensure you can cast your other cards. when you're playing 21 lands, its not a bad idea to have cards that say "go get a land". lets also consider that hitting delirium before turn 4 basically always means that you may as well play like 1 more ishkanah. now, i know what you're thinking "but if you play more ishkanah, they all just die to kozilek's returns that you recast D:" but ishkanah does something like return does, in that it provides a defense against an opponents board state. honestly, in playtesting, throwing spiders into play helps stall the game just as long, if not longer, than a kozi's return. if you're playing against a midrange or aggro deck, you'll see your opponent trying to figure out "oh man how do i attack into this so that i'm getting advantage" while the whole time, you're thinking "if they do anything that puts me behind, i'll just flash in my eldrazi and blow everything else up."
anyway, coax from the blind eternities is actually a playable card, which is neat.

i think they missed a trigger. when you cast emrakruel, you take your opponents turn. so you go through the same motions as your opponent would. So the trigger i think that was missed was the liliana emblem unless it was the zombie he saced and i just missed it

Owen will mature, he is just young and too focused on what he could have achieved as opposed to what he already has achieved. Peter Chapin has this sort of mentality too, 2nd place to some people is more painful than dead last, to each their own I suppose.
edit: and to be fair, owen had terrible draws all 3 games, especially that final one.
