      It was a sympathy crash so his friend didn't feel like an idiot. When you drive a house on wheels you better know how to handle it. I didn't see the first guy even go over and check on the 2nd rider, who only had the accident because he stopped to check on him!

      +Johnny Longstroke Looks like the lead Harley rider hit the two areas where the asphalt is worn off which caused him to turn into the gravel and eventually run off the road. The second Harley rider rode past the first one as he went off the cliff. My assumption is he was looking back at his friend. Aas any rider knows, you go where you look. So since he was looking down to the right that's where he went.

      Nah - I can ride the twisties on my 500kg Thunderbird quite well thanks - but then I'm used to it. An anecdote - I was following a packs of HD's (me in a car) up the road to Dante's Peak in Death Valley. Most were dressers ridden by accountants with the full HD branded outfits. (I'm an accountant as well so no disrespect just because of that). Well bugger me but an electra glide on a tight RH corner went belly up. This was probably the first time this tosser had gotten off the interstate - ever. There was nothing particularly tricky about the corner other than being tight & uphill. Oh well - his outing ended on a bit of a downer but no one was hurt.

      You slow down like that on a turn while failing to keep your eyes way in front of you, this is what happens Can happen in just a second or two and you are over the hill , once you run off the edge of the road, you are usually in deep troblem than.

      You´re right this is the case, every one here is saying this and that but the truth is they didn´t have the experiencie in handling the weight of the bike, i clearly see that the second pilot saw his buddy falling and then he proceed to help him miscalculating the side of the road thinking it was wise to stop the bike there with no space for that, gravity did the trick.

    In the U.K. that would be a top quality stretch of rural road. We routinely have 4" giant holes, torrential rain, and tar slip surfaced roads covered in farm slurry. Which makes for very slow motorcycling. Outside of summer, I frequently pull in and wave by slow moving cars. Which is possibly a reason why I've survived 52 years of biking.

      I thought the same thing. That guy said (twice) he was trying to avoid "that hole in the road" and when the camera man swiveled his head around to find said hole, it did not appear to be there. Then he blamed that tiny patch of dust engrained into the road surface. I think they both just needed some riding experience before buying full dresser Harleys.

    The first dumper failed to negotiate the bank of the curve and was going to slow and not counter balancing which caused his heavy bike to basically just roll down the hill. Unfortunately the road wasn't there. The second dumpers both turned their heads to look at the first dumper and your motorcycle goes where your head(s) goes so there it went.

      I'm back here because someone responded to my post from years ago, but I totally get your point. However having just come back from a long tour on my BMW that included a lot of tight steep switch back roads, one issue that led to this might have been how slow you have to corner a big cruiser like these Harleys to not touch anything down, with their lack of clearance, you do have to use quite a bit of lean angle. The super slow speed they took the corner at led to the instability that in the end caused the mishap combined with a lack of basic skills.

    • @MartinKillips
      @MartinKillips 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@fiveowaf454 who knows - you might be spot on. For what it's worth, I have watched the video a couple more times and it seems the first rider to go down was travelling very slowly and also very close to the apex, and it could be that in an effort to balance and gain stability he accelerated off the road. The second rider appeared to want to stop and help his friend out and rode into the apex to stop but realised too late that there wasn't any space to put his feet down. Whatever the cause, both crashed look like beginners errors to me.

    • @fiveowaf454
      @fiveowaf454 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MartinKillips A lack of confidence and therefore low speed is definitely a major factor in the outcome, it makes the relatively simple task of turning the corner so much more difficult and with more speed the rider in front wouldn't have seen his friend fall until he was well past the corner. Having said that I still feel bad for them, there's nothing funny about a fall even if it's only the bikes taking a hit.

      I once had a good friend who lived in WV, so I made it a point to check out the New River
      Bridge, near where he had lived, but prior to the bridge being built....and was actually the river the movie "Deliverance" was filmed on. I actually ended up spending two nights there, as I had to have a front tire replaced and the shop had to order it.
      For decades, I wouldn't even look at a bike if it weren't a Harley. Then one day, in 1970, my brother in law rode into my driveway on a brand new Honda 750. First time I ever really looked at a Honda and gave it a look-over. He didn't have to ask me twice if I wanted to take it for a ride. I was just reovering from an expensive move out of state for a job which hadn't worked out, bouth a house and didn't have much spare money, but bought a Honda 350 twin just to have something to ride to work and gradually worked up to a 750.
      I am now looking at 82 and toying with quitting riding while I'm ahead. However, I have a good friend I met while on that trip and he is right now, considering riding from VA to the west coast, and should he actually do that, I couldn't let him ride all the way here and not show him Highway 1 south of Big Sur along the ocean or Alice's Restaurant, could I? @@blackholeentry3489 A jockey shift is where the cable or linkage is removed that is used to change gears in the transmission and is replaced with a lever to then shift gears with your left hand. Yep, your hand comes off the handlebar to shift. Pretty crazy stuff! Look at an old panhead as the shifter was a linkage thing on the left side of the tank. Guys would customize their bikes and remove it. Looks cool though. Depending on the set up, you replace the hand clutch on the left grip with a foot clutch and linkage on the left side. I had a shovelhead with the foot clutch on the left side best I remember and also had a panhead with a foot clutch. Now that was tricky because coming to a stop the left foot is holding the clutch in and the right the foot brake and your left hand is operating the shifter. As you come to a stop you apply the right hand brake and thus are able to put you right foot down on the ground. Then you had to get the tranny in neutral with your shifter hand while still clutching in order to put both feet on the ground. It was a handful! My panhead sat on a Gary Bang rigid frame, no rear shock, a notable frame guy of times past, had a slight rake to the front wheel which had a spoke softail front wheel and a 180 tire in the rear and drag bars for handle bars. It had kick start too of course. That is pretty tricky starting with the Bendix carburetor. It essentially was a bar bike as such and any putt over an hour either had your back out or you pissing blood from beating your kidneys to death. I did have two springs in my seat. I kept it for a few years till I luckily got that out of my system before I killed myself. This was many years ago and the left/right stuff is the best I can remember. Yes, Hondas are great bikes and I love my Suzuki too. My cuz has the new Gold Wing, amazing bike. You had some nice old bikes, collector stuff now. And I never owned the newer blockhead as was an old shovelhead guy. Wouldn’t mind having one now for just to have it but my Boulevard is definitely my cruiser. Guys like you and I at least have memories with these things unlike those that never rode. Had some great times and hopefully a few more before we put the kickstand down for the last time.

      Been there, nothing better then pulling out a chair out of the saddle bags, a hat out of the tour pak, a drink out of the other saddle bag and being able to give the GPS coordinates to the tow truck while your taking to Harley Road side assistance because you broke the shift linkage rod and are stuck in 4th gear between to steep hills and can't down shift to make it over. 2 hrs waiting for the tow truck, 2 hrs getting the bike back to the dealer, $400 tow truck ride (which the also broke the ABS on the front tile since the driver strapped the bike in wrong), 30 mins waiting for a ride home from the brother, a Saturday wasted, an extended warranty and a first name bases with your HD mechanic...priceless.... Having the gear available for when things go wrong makes it all worth the big bike, bring on the storm, got gear for that, bring on the cold, got gear for that, bring on the sunny day stranded on the side of the road, yep got gear for that too. Best of all I can ride for hours or weeks (when the bike is running of course). Love what you ride and ride what you love.

      Need no. Two wheel and and engine is the need. A naked bike has its time and place: ninja suit and 30 mins of mind blowing speed or 10 mins between bars. But now that I don't try to kill myself every time (some is expected) I ride and no longer hate my liver and need at least 2 hrs of behind the bar time to get over my shit ass week, so I enjoy the music, the nav system, the drink, the place to have rain gear, being able to change my gear and helmet and even pull out a small camping chair when I find that overlook spot to stop and have a cigar.....Having a few luxuries in life make it easier to live without the necessities of life.

      1) If you want to be happy for a day drink, if you want to be happy for a year get married, if you want to be happy for a life time ride...If you don't understand I cant help but might I suggest going to a bike dealer and have you throw a leg over what ever ride you like and look in the mirror at that smile that just crept across your face.
      2) If you don't ride in the rain, well, then you just don't ride. Life happens have the gear for it.

      BigBlue Glide Crike you have more euphemisms than Bill Cosby. When you're 'riding' a couch on wheels and can't feel the road or elements while screwing with every option under the sun it kind of kills the idea of a bike. Maybe I just don't get it as I'd rather test my skill and mettle on a forestry road than asleep on a highway.

    I'm going with Target Fixation. I suspect they were both equally inexperienced. Instead of waiting for a straight stretch to slow down, right signal on, and slow down, they decided to stop. Both looked right the side of the road and they followed their eyes over the edge. Experienced riders can shoulder check and look around and maintain a straight line with no problem. For inexperienced riders, those things can be a bit of a challenge as simple as they seem to many of us.

Then make instant false police reports. (Riders Down)

      Really sad and I don't think either was an experienced rider. I saw no hole either. I ride a Harley - Street Glide and you definitely need to respect the weight of that type of bike. They both did a taboo thing of slowing to a crawl, then turning their wheels to a down grade and braking. With that type of weight, your one leg on the ground is not going to stop the bike from rolling over on it's side. If they intended to pull over or slow down, they needed to negotiate that curve at a much higher speed, and pull over on a straight away. Also, I see a lot of big Harley riders afraid to lean their bikes into a curve which is really bad. That might have caused the first rider to slow down too much and head to the side of the road. Don't know how long these people may have been riding but I believe this gave them a major gut check about respect for a motorcycle.

    • @LinuxGalore
      @LinuxGalore 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Road bad all over down here in NC. The center of your lane is bumpy and raised up and will rattle your teeth out , and that tar they put in to seal the cracks up with is dangerous. It shook my flaring so bad that it broke my big speaker magnet off the speaker. I had a couple of flat tires on the rear, people leave everything on the roads, never plug them like you do a car tire, it will get you home slow but no good, I had 3 plugs in the rear tire, the biggest hole I plugged with a strip plug that you put in and pull back out, going over the rough road in the center of your lane and doing about 70 mph and boom, that plug blew out of the tire ,made a racket when it coame out, and you are flat real fast and you will know it when the bike gets real unstable . LOL I had to get a tube in it, they wanted to put a new tire on it for me, and I said that is a 250 dollar new tire there you just put on for me, so put a tube in it !!! Still going but don't trust that tube either.

    When the car spun its wheels to get moving, you could see how steep the incline of the curve was. This doesn't really show up on video (the steepness). I'll bet the HD riders were not looking ahead into the corner like you should and in way to high a gear - like 3rd. This would be a 1st gear hill on those bikes. They started to stall out and down they went. An experienced rider would have downshifted well ahead of time or even slipped the clutch if necessary to keep the RPMs up - which is a basic dirt riding skill.

    My guess is that he was in a pretty tall gear off the straightaway and didn't downshift into a low enough gear. He hit the turn slow, leaned a little, and didn't have enough torque to pull him through it. That's a lot of iron to keep upright when you aren't rolling.

    • @erichkorman710
      @erichkorman710 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And the second guy? You got it right, a lot of iron that has no place on a motorcycle. Nobody uses it except Harley garbage like this. Even at pathetically low speeds the bicycle frames made of waterpipe flexes, the ridiculous, ancient engine from the first world war shakes and chokes with the rear cylinder 60 degrees hotter than the front and designed by idiots. These clowns do not belong on any kind of motorcycle.
