DCS World IFF functionality primer

  • IFF - Identification Friend or Foe - helps prevent friendly fire and ensure airspace security. DCS simulates this to a certain degree, but most functions only become relevant in multiplayer scenarios with players acting as controllers.
This is a short video explaining some of the broad functionality of IFF in Gen4 strike fighters in DCS. This is not a demonstration of 'correct' technique for you, or how you should aim to operate. Play the game whichever way you wish.

It’s an older code Sir, but it still checks out.

Thank you for doing this, I knew the very basics of IFF when the Hornet first implemented it, but no idea the depth both in and out of DCS now. Super informative as are all your videos, again much appreciated for all the effort!

Nicely done... Lot of detail hard to find anywhere.

Mode one and two are used every sortie (depending on the equipment installed on the jet), but only by military controllers. They are not used to tell friend from foe, but to identify aircraft type and mission. All squawks are found on the Air Tasking Order for the day. Source: five deployments.

Hi Theodosius, that’s good info thanks. Is that recent experience? If so, I wonder if this is aircraft type dependent. I used Modes 2 to 4, but never Mode 1. ~Tyro

@@AIRWARFAREGROUP Hi Tyro, my experience is relatively recent, yes. Plus, our guidance on the matter has not changed. I can only give you the USAF pilot (non-fighter) perspective, though. I suppose it could just be a US thing.

@@ImperatorTheodosius possibly, my experience isn't universal either nor exhaustive. It would be interesting to compare notes on where/how/when we have differences and overlaps, but probably not a conversation for TH-cam comments!

Great video, thank you for the info. I’ve been looking for a detailed video regarding IFF but they all are dated before the last IFF update from ED (Other videos are really about datalink 16). May I please make some questions I still have?
    1. If I understood correctly (I’m not native English speaker), when setting up to fence in, you switch off 3C mode (not necessary in dcs single player I also understood). My question is: will doing that prevent other friendly aircraft to identify you as friendly?
    2. When configuring IFF in the UFC, xP changes to AI. What does that do?
Thank you for your hard work and to the DCS community!

Tyro probably has a better answer for this, but as far as we gather from our ED Testers and other contacts in SIM Development, IFF is not modeled into DCS World like the real world would be. Game coalitions tell who's friendly or not IFF CODES only apply to LOT-ATC with SRS used. If you switched off MODE 3C in a Hornet in the real world, I think you would still have MODE 4 and Datalink plus LINK 16 donors to share your identity and position on SA pages and scopes. Changes in the UFC for IFF do nothing to the AI in game. We have however been able to assign IFF MODE C codes to AI aircraft on our missions. Check out this video...a few mistakes, but read the comments. ~JUICE

Not that it matters but, yours is one of the few I click "like" before I even watch it all. Bad habit? Naw, experience.
On the subject...surprised I've never checked this in DCS, but in the RW Mode3A is base-8 (octal), or numerals 0 - 7, no 8 or 9's. Been a long time since I thought about his though.
