I know I'm very late to the party; but one tip in case you're planning on doing any more of these: Cntrl + Z speeds up the in-game clock and therefore the tutorial voice-over so you won't die out of boredom :)
I believe that this mission was created long before IFA was correctly implemented in the Hornet (I believe it was added sometime in the last 6 months). Wag’s initial videos on startup included the checks, including control surfaces, hook, probe, and anti-skid status. But yeah, it’s incomplete and not a full startup.
Chuck's guide has updated startup procedure, and it adresses the checks Mover mentioned. Also, if the mission date is before the year 1986, you would use NAV mode instead of IFA.
1:32 I miss him, too. Matt "Press Spacebar to continue" Wagner :D 3:55 "Ohl pressure" :) 8:47 I wonder if you have to _hold down_ the friggen thing _for a second_ IRL as well for it to actually ack the cautions and restack the advisories like in DCS... 15:13 Old tutorial, hasn't been reworked yet. IFA wasn't functioning in the DCS module for a long time. 16:14 I'm doing this while the FCS BIT runs and I think Wags also did so on his tutorial video (which basically is where I learnt how to start up the thing). I'm baffled the tutorial mission skips it. Probe, speed brake, hook and launch bar. And later the controls wipe. TBH I usually skip the fire test in the beginning to speed things up.
I was my shop's final checker for about a year while I was in the Navy (AME on the Prowlers), this brings me back, lol. I remember for a while, I acted like I was a second basemen in the middle of a double play relaying the "throw" from the SB side checker to the plane captain, lol. I also took a couple turns as a PC.
With turning the DDI's on after 1 engine start, You can definitely turn all of the on before starting the second engine. I was a engine ground runner and we always did so we could easily see all engine parameters before trying to start the second engine. Never had a power surge.
As much as I enjoyed learning how to start up a Hornet I also really liked watching the real world training the ground crew (4P's on helmets - one behind mimicking the one in front) were doing communicating with Mover during the video. Totally understandable his annoyance at the lengthy descriptions from the narrator but wonder how many years of training/flying it took him to get in that position ;-)
Love how I watch this and have no idea about most of the systems in this cockpit. But I still follow it closely like I’m actually going to remember any of this lol.
Hey Mover, at the time this tutorial was created, ED had not implemented IFA into the Navigation systems on the Hornet which is why he told you to put it into NAV instead of IFA. I believe IFA was implemented about 4 months later. It was cool as hell to see some of the hand signals between you and the ground crew. I'd love a video on that if possible. Maybe get Oral back on to do the same for the Tomcat? :D TOMCATS!
I feel the same way. Every time I am in Cold Lake (Canadian Hornet base) and waiting in the viewing area, I get goosebumps when you can start hearing the jets crank. Love it!
Mover could you show us DCS fans what you would do including checks for a realistic FA/18C start up, taxi and TO please. Really enjoying your content thank you
Mr Mover if you see this comment id like you to know you really inspire me to get into the aviation industry and since i love the hornet and im only 14 i have DCS and try at my best to make each flight as realistic as possible now for a strange request but could you do the f18 start video in dcs BUT its in a single player world and you show off all the checks just like how you did it in your former hornet days
Quick tip to remember Mover; you can pause or adjust the sim time rate or even press space in advance while the guy is talking to skip to the next item provided you've completed the item.
One thing that's kind of annoying for this awesome idea of comparing the tutorials to your real life experience is that a lot of the tutorials are not up to date. That's just the problem with the F/A 18 still being an early access module. Many features have been added/updated while some missions/tutorials just haven't been adjusted accordingly. So expect a few hiccups here and there. Apart from that, as I said, awesome idea! Seeing it side by side with your commentary is really fun, I wonder if they implement correct ground crew functionality outside of the carrier module in the future...
Fantastic stuff Mover, can't wait for more of your commentary around Hornet Ops including ship borne commentary. BZ “they got bored and left” cracked me up :)
I was always fascinated when I ended up working around the Hornet guys with how different the Navy’s procedures for launching a jet is compared to how we did it in the USAF.
You're correct about setting the INS knob to IFA, In DCS, for the INS alignment in the hornet, once you set the INS knob to GRND, you have to immediatley select the stored heading button/ OSB on the Advanced Multipurpose Colour Display and once that's done aligning, you set it to IFA like you were saying, not NAV, otherwise your INS alignment will slowly degrade over time while you're flying, if you select stored heading align and set it to IFA, the alignment will not degrade. Not sure how it works in real life but in DCS this is how it works.
Your right it's IFA for GPS NAV mode. If you check Wags videos he has one on the new procedure for NAV align in the Hornet. There are Kneeboards you can download from DCS, or check the manual for the start up procedures that covers pre Bat check, ENG start and the rest. I think it was the 5 finger check you were referring too (hook, prob, est).
Plane Captian: I wonder what is taking so long. Is there an issue? Mover: starts talking to the imaginary voice in the air, "come on, the plane captain is waiting on us!" Plane Captian: Looks concerned.
If i remember correctly our pilots turned on just about everything as soon as the first engine was running. We had the C models. They also forgot nose wheel steering check and brake checks before final checkers.
Thanks for the video. Very enjoyable and interesting to watch! I still wonder what your opinion is regarding this DCS Hornet vs Real life Hornet, especially avionics (I can imagine real pilots miss the 'seat of the pants'). But a comparison around this time is interesting, especially now considering this dcs module has evolved and should be more fleshed out and closer to real life. The DCS Hornet is planned to go out of early acces this year. Not asking for any classified stuff btw...😉. Anyway, thanks and take care!
Don't know if you know this but if you Left Ctrl+Z It'll speed up time and also make the talking go faster in the tutorials. Shift+Z for normal time Alt+Z for slower
damn thank you so much for this info - i been wanting to keep doing a training session but cannot be bothered to listen to the text all the time lol thanks
On a PvP server what you do typically is switch on battery power, get the engines lit and alignment going, FCS BIT test (all while getting fuel and stores on board), set takeoff trim according to weight. Once alignment is complete and stores hooked up roll out to the rwy (a lot of players settle for the taxiway here, against server regulations! I mean forget IRL regulations LUL) and perform takeoff. Closing the canopy is obviously recommended, but some players I've seen take off with it open so it seems to be more of a personal preference and not critical to the function of the aircraft. I always take care to use the lights properly because the airfields on DCS PvP servers aren't actually airfields, it's the jungle out there so you'll want to be seen. The average DCS pilot is mostly blind however so other players might run into you on the taxiway, either because they're attempting takeoff on a taxiway or because they won't look left/right before turning or... just out of boredom. You might also run into oncoming traffic while performing takeoff roll, even if you've done everything correctly according to NAVY regulations. So it's advisable to keep one hand on the ejection handle at all times until your landing gear is completely up. In case you need to eject however, make sure to look above you first because someone still might be landing on top of you and you don't want to punch a hole through their wing or eject into unexploded ordnance. This is the real world, on DCS online servers. :D Players are in a big hurry to get into the action out there.
Like DCS, the Navy is he or she who knows how to types and submits the mods (draft modification notice) through maintenance chain of command as well as the operation chain command sets the standard operating system: NATOPS. It a lot easier to review someone else's procedures. Eventually, you can put this on your Officer Fitness Report as well add to the Personnel Evaluation of your subordinates. PS...actually there is no difference from the software engineers, programmers, and engineers who develop DCS...
Hey Mover! Your fans can only hope & dream that the USN Blue Angels & USAF Thunderbirds would take you for “incentive/VIP” rides at an airshow in their respective two-seaters. We would love nothing more than to see the pilots turn the aircraft over to you for some “stick time”, for old times sake. You sir, belong amongst the clouds! Love the channel, love what you do, and thank you for everything that you do for aviation, your fans, your family, and your country!
The NAV option is selected due to the fact, that IFA was not implemented yet when this tutorial was created. If I remeber correctly IFA was added last year. As of now this tutorial for the Hornet is outdated. A lot of new functions was added in the last year. Anyway thank you for the compare with the real world. Like that live footage :-) o7
CW LEMOINE: If you’ve been ordered to SCRAMBLE in absolute emergency, how long does this take to start up? Do you really need to align the INS? Can you skip all tests?
IFA is only 6 months old in DCS, before that we were limited to INS only (GPS was simulated, but not functional). Now you have to specifically do a GPS alignment to then go IFA.
I, for one--and as a former Troubleshooter--always appreciated the aircrew getting 1 and 2 going so we can move on with the damn launch and get to final checking/troubleshooting of any issues. This is like a FCF launch it's taking so long... And yeah, your PC and shooters hauled ass because they got bored! Lol...
The autostart sequence does go through the extra checks that the tutorial left out, and it completes the entire sequence very quickly (compared to the tutorial length).
Real cool you took the time to do this vid. Even though its been a while since you strapped in you still have a lot memory still of your time in the seat. When in doubt ask gonky lol
15:45 This tutorial is old. IFA wasn't in effect until a few months ago when the F/A-18C was updated. The INS startup has been updated but the tutorial still uses the old way. It actually uses the "STD HDG" now on the HSI too when you turn the INS on.
The Hornet in DCS used to have no IFA and INS alignment simulated . That's why the tutorial is missing it. It came with an update a while ago. Now you can use stored heading alignment and use IFA after that.
That was informative and useful. Thank you. BTW, what the hell is going on with that performance by the ground guys in your own video? Nothing like that occurs in the Royal Australian Air Force and yet the jet leaves the flight line, completes the mission, and RTBs in exactly the same way; all without the performance art duet on the side.

Would be cool if you would do a talk through of your version of start up in the DCS hornet.
Call it how we did it in the Fleet...... oh wait ;) errr I mean on shore
that would be great to see on shore and aircraft carrier start ups from real pilots ! I hope Mover hears this out :)
A very rare opportunity to see a side by side comparison thankyou. I think this showcases just how authentic DCS really is when compared to the real counterpart.
Really interesting video. Could definitely do with a LOT more explanation as to acronyms, functions, the what and the why, that type of thing. The intercutting with the real thing was really cool!
"They're will also be an accompanying 'deedle deedle' sound to draw your attention"
Mover: "deedle deedle" 😂
Matt "Press Spacebar to continue" Wagner :D
3:55 "Ohl pressure" :)
8:47 I wonder if you have to _hold down_ the friggen thing _for a second_ IRL as well for it to actually ack the cautions and restack the advisories like in DCS...
Pretty cool how this switches from sim to real life views. Appreciate the editing.
Mover if you were on an alert situation and needed to scramble quickly is there a different procedure to start up or do you just do it faster?
Probably you would skip the engine fire tests + the checks mover mentioned (hook etc).
13:28 - "Is it really going to do it? No ****?! It does it." - Lemoine. That's right Lemoine, DCS never ceases to impress.
Shit. Shit shit shit.
This is TH-cam. They don't give a shit about people saying shit.
If a war was on and you relied on DCS to get your jet started it would be over before you taxied.
TOMCATS!
*makes 1 hour clip
Navy ground crew always look so dorky with their motions lol
Mover you are so awesome for this. This is the coolest transition ever.
I'll never forget those cold foggy mornings just before sunrise listening to these birds moaning to life as you struggle to pull yourself together.
I feel the same way. Every time I am in Cold Lake (Canadian Hornet base) and waiting in the viewing area, I get goosebumps when you can start hearing the jets crank. Love it!
4:40, that cut was buttery smooth.
Mover could you show us DCS fans what you would do including checks for a realistic FA/18C start up, taxi and TO please. Really enjoying your content thank you
Thanks, good video!
Wish we could have some ground crew in game, even just for living scenery. :)
Great video . Like the real cockpit cut ins.. oh and God bless ground crews everywhere!
Mr Mover if you see this comment id like you to know you really inspire me to get into the aviation industry and since i love the hornet and im only 14 i have DCS and try at my best to make each flight as realistic as possible
now for a strange request but could you do the f18 start video in dcs BUT its in a single player world and you show off all the checks just like how you did it in your former hornet days
Quick tip to remember Mover; you can pause or adjust the sim time rate or even press space in advance while the guy is talking to skip to the next item provided you've completed the item.
"It's a long and dark process" is always my excuse when my wife complains we don't do foreplay lol
Great video!
Regarding the INS, IFA wasn't implemented at the time this tutorial was made, and is generally outdated
C.W actually listening to the manual.....This is a 1st.........lol
Fantastic stuff Mover, can't wait for more of your commentary around Hornet Ops including ship borne commentary. BZ “they got bored and left” cracked me up :)
Lmaoo lemoines commentary is hilarious. You need helllaaaa patience to go through these trainings.
That is not how it works in real life. Never did a stored heading alignment in the Hornet.
@@CWLemoine interesting to know, thanks for the reply and keep up the awesome videos!
Thanks a lot! That's really nice to make those videos to let us how you really do it.
Note: this video did not include the 5 down and maintenance final checks portion. Mover mentions them briefly.
Plane Captian: I wonder what is taking so long. Is there an issue?
Mover: starts talking to the imaginary voice in the air, "come on, the plane captain is waiting on us!"
Plane Captian: Looks concerned.
The RL and DCS back and forth was really well done
Gamer climbs into a real Hornet cockpit ... "Hey! Where's the space bar?!!!" :)
Can you do the same thing for the Viper? This is super interesting!
you should get a viper pilot for that
@@mikkihintikka7273 Mover is also a Viper pilot.

I find this fascinating, comparing DCS to the real procedures. Plus, mover, your unique perspective...😁
Looking forward to seeing you do some carrier OPS one day.
AFAIK, Lemoine never flew from carriers. That said, he’d still have better attempts than 99,9% of virtual aviators 😏
@Vim Fuego You should check out Lex's videos.
If i remember correctly our pilots turned on just about everything as soon as the first engine was running. We had the C models. They also forgot nose wheel steering check and brake checks before final checkers.
@Vim Fuego vfa-15 out of oceana
It was a change about mid-way through my time at 204. There was concern about putting too much load on the generator and longevity.
Hey, Mover, guess it would be cool if you make a video about all that hand signals and such stuff
i second that
Thats sick, can you do one with the F-16?
Thanks for the video. Very enjoyable and interesting to watch! I still wonder what your opinion is regarding this DCS Hornet vs Real life Hornet, especially avionics (I can imagine real pilots miss the 'seat of the pants'). But a comparison around this time is interesting, especially now considering this dcs module has evolved and should be more fleshed out and closer to real life. The DCS Hornet is planned to go out of early acces this year. Not asking for any classified stuff btw...😉. Anyway, thanks and take care!
Nice to see you back Mover
USN retired here. F/A-18A thru F airframer. Turning the hornet was a blast!
Don't know if you know this but if you Left Ctrl+Z It'll speed up time and also make the talking go faster in the tutorials.
Shift+Z for normal time
Alt+Z for slower
Holy shit you are a hero.
damn thank you so much for this info - i been wanting to keep doing a training session but cannot be bothered to listen to the text all the time lol thanks
Players are in a big hurry to get into the action out there.
CW LEMOINE:
If you’ve been ordered to SCRAMBLE in absolute emergency, how long does this take to start up?
Wow, VFC-13/111 F-5s and ATAC F-21s, nice Det!!
The Hornet in DCS used to have no IFA and INS alignment simulated . That's why the tutorial is missing it. It came with an update a while ago. Now you can use stored heading alignment and use IFA after that.
17:15 “no, no we don’t. Why would you want that?” And now you know how ground crew feels like. Or maybe that’s cus I’m Air Force. Great video!
I'd be interested to know what all the hand signals indicate and why there's 2 ground crew in formation mirroring them?
if i had to guess, field training a newbie
I would love to see you have a dogfight with Growing Sidewinder! That fight would be amazing
What would be interesting is BVR, but that's not happening.
If you do the ai startup (windows key + home) it actually goes through all the stuff wags forgot to say / tell us to do.
Gotta spend the defense budget on something right?
