DCS World | SRS Radio Tutorial and Demonstration!

- Hey guys! While its called Simple Radio Standalone, it can be a little confusing to set up and use SRS for DCS: World Multiplayer.
I have found that just SRS can be one of the biggest hurdles for DCS: World pilots to overcome before they jump into multiplayer missions and servers! This is a very simplified and cursory look at how to setup and use SRS, but I believe that it will help everyone looking to get into DCS World Multiplayer.

Thank you for being THE ONLY ONE that told me that I need to separate my in game (settings) PTT button from my SRS buttons. I was having fits with my in game comms menu popping up every time I talked on SRS, and was under the impression that the buttons NEEDED to be set the same between SRS/DCS. You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

Im in the same boat. Just tried it yesterday, fps takes a hit compared to single player, obviously, but it opens up a whole new side to DCS.
Try it out, I almost exclusivley play multiplayer now - so much more immersive in my opinion

I have tried couple of hours now to find a tutorial about airplane communications itself. Not the terminology, way to talk etc. but just simply "why there are different frequencies and what do they mean". Havent found. I can USE all of em, just dont have ANY clue about airplane radios... So when you say u use only two channels for example... Are those for wingman etc "own" communications AND towers, awacs etc.. or..?

DCS should pay him and implemented into the game. If you guys can, you should really donate to him, this program is so good. You can also use the KY 58 in the F18 to use a secure channel with SRS.

I'm pretty sure they mentioned they were developing their own version to be integrated into the game, complete with the ability for jamming and radio signal quality degradation

Loved your video, have been trying to get my head around SRS but havn't really gotten it working properly but this cleared all of that up. Another video idea for you might be to go over some of the termology that you use in your missions, I think that style of video would be a great companion to this one.
I enjoyed your Early review of the F16. It flies like butter and I love how they included the TGP already.
HOT TIP: Go to the SRS Discord and read the SRS RADIO HELP / common-issues section. Pay attention to the "SRS can only pull the Radio switch PTT from some modules" thread. DCS VOIP and SRS do NOT play nice together. Pick one or the other, but not both.

REALITY: Noodys talking in SRS freq. If you ask why nobody talking to each other somebody reply you "why?"
How does the radio setup/use work for the low fidelity aircraft?
The feedback in a pilot's headset of his own voice is call "SIDETONE", and some aircraft allow you to adjust sidetone.

Ive been playing for about 2 years and still haven't played in a multi-player server lol
I get all the connections except VOIP connection any tips on how to make it connect
I need to get into this and MP! I love DCS. I will say, as an FO on the airbus, I really wish I had left and right ear radios. Working two radios on the ground gets crazy. At O'Hare, I'm frequently talking to ground on 1 while confirming a gate with ops on 2 and then ramp on 2 to confirm our entry instructions. One hand on my pen and the other on the radio to quick turn up who I think is talking to me, meanwhile, you still hear the captain on the intercom. All this at an airport where the ground controller might actually kill you for asking them to repeat.

Thanks for the video. Found it most useful. However, I’m new to SRS, just installed it, seems have changed? Can not find any options to play Comm 1, Comm 2 to left ear and right ear respectively? Am I missing something here?
P.S. Did not quite understand setup for AI comms vs Voice comms to real people?

Great vid Spud! Has anyone ever commented on your widescreen format? I watch your vids on iPad and the widescreen format makes them more difficult to see.
Interesting point! I never noticed this until I just got my new (to me) phone. With a taller screen the widescreen format actually looks better for my viewing circumstance.

Is there a way to set channel priority, so that when an important channel receives the other channels mute or lower?
Can tower or / and awacs etc be "manned" in server to use SRS. If so how can I know when it is, and when it is not? Just from server info itself? Or is it ALWAYS ATC AI?
And... should I put some information also to gamemasters trough SRS about my landings on busy airfields... ? It is just like you said, the comms are most big weidamob when entering multiplayer, there is no anything "hard" in em. Just million little questions you get immeadiatly to head :)

Would it be possible to integrate SRS with Voice Attack (with the Vaicom Pro plugin) such that you can use the same comm keys in DCS to command AI, as well as talk with your friends? Or they must be mapped differently?
So what would you recommend: SRS or Voice Attack w/VIACOM Pro?
You guys do these lessons?.. In new to DCS. I will play multiplier once I get better but for now so many thing to learn especially in Avionics and Aviation.

I have never used a military radio admittedly, but no radio I have ever used or seen being used echoed you when you were transmitting. Is that actually a thing aircraft radios do? Why?
It's called Sidetone. It's instantaneous and not an echo. Not bothersome no more than hearing your own voice when you speak normally everyday.
My game connect won’t turn green at the bottom.

Second: I have been thinking about starting with SRS and I have seen some videos. I thought I had understood it. Seen you have uploaded a video made me happy, cause you do make some good videos. But at the end I was confused again. I thought I only needed 3 buttons and in your video it was 4.
I was thinking if a graphic representation like a diagram (hope it is called that in english) or something. Just a rough one made in Paint, no need for anything fancy.

Trying to set this up in the viper, every time I try and transmit, it is clicking the comms buttons on the icp panel, changing the data display menu each time. When I enter settings are crashes and I have to leave and rejoin the server. Any help?

@@Spudknocker thank you, I was trying to use a switch to go from Comm 1 to Comm 2 and have a PTT button to use for both. I was trying to follow along but didn’t seem to figure it out. On the Warthog Hotas I was trying to assign Comm 1/2 to the red hat switch and PTT to the push button multi direction switch above the board button.
spuds I need some big time advice. i cant play dcs at the moment due to vaicomm pro. it has been running great until last night. now my comms menu keeps auto popping up freezing my game every 5 secs and the going away and coming back every 5 sec making dcs unplayable tried deleting the scripts export lua file in saved games and even pain staking uninstalled voiceattack and vaicomm pro and resinstalled to have issue only to come back. any advice I would greatly appreciate. reason I am asking on this video is this issue started after I downloaded srs with this video.if I don't load voiceattack and viacomm it doesn't happen.
Can you communicate with ground forces from combined arms?
So I downloaded this but i don't usually hear anybody on coms. I get radio checks every once in a while but do people still use it? Is there a way to group up with people who do?

Could you do a section on Hot mic for Rio to pilot for F14 having a little difficulty getting it to work without it transmitting the open mic over discord channel

Hey Spud, I want to join your discord server but it says the links are invalid here and on your website. I am also interested in some one on one training in a multiplayer server. Mainly using my coms and SRS. I fly the A-10 but I need some coms training.
What happened to TARS, and what are the difference between SRS and TARS?
SRS doesnt require teamspeak its a standalone application!

does this work on steam edition? When I tried using it on steam edition it said it couldn't find my DCS profile
my overlay has a huge ugly timestamp log I cant get rid of??
So in the tomcat do I still need to set my com 1 and 2 in srs or should I disable it and just use the in game tomcat com 1 and 2 that you showed

When i push the comms1 to talk on SRS the actual COMMS menu (in white ) appears as well is this normal
Is that in the F-14? If not it sounds like you have both functions boundto the same button
@@Spudknocker hi mate, its on the F18, so with the SRS button i should not have anything set for that button in DCS then? and have a seperate button for Comms Menu. So I have Comms 1 mapped to DCS and have the same button as Radio 1 in SRS
@@dragon121978 they are two separate systems client/AI so separate buttons.
Great vid! But I am deaf in the left ear, Will radios 1 and radio 2 be only on the left and right side of my headset or will communications from both radios be on both sides of my headset. Multiplayer won't work for me if i can't hear both radios. Thanks in advance.
In the vid there's a Left/Right select for each radio. Now there's a slider for full customization.

Not sure if you’ll see this spud but i’d really love to get into multiplayer dcs, campaigns are good but a bit monotonous. My main problem though is my pc’s ram which as of now is 8gb so dcs is stretching it thin enough never mind headtracking and then srs, so so far srs just wont work with multiplayer due to dcs crashing, wondering if you might know of any work arounds or fixes if there are any
yes hey man I would have at least 16 GB of ram for DCS multiplayer, 32 would be best to be honest. You can try cutting your preload radius in half under the graphics settings that can help. I think your crashes are most likely ram related
SRS would have to be one of the easiest addons in history for me.
read the guide, and you shouldn't have an issue.
cs512tr people do have trouble with it tho unfortunately

Abbreviated radio language is called clear text. It is concise and to the point. Not like that garbage truckers use on CBs. Its imperative to master in an aviation environment whether in real life or highly accurate sim worlds. Obviously by your comment you are not an actual pilot or a dedicated sim fan. So simple...go play somewhere else!

I've been playing dcs since January and recently downloaded srs, is there a server you can suggest for practicing my comms. I'm still learning the basics and am very nervous about getting abused for my mistakes. Thanks

You made this far more complicated than it needed to be.
SRS needs to stop being so intrusive. It doesn't need to put ugly dialog boxes on the screen, pester you to update every couple of weeks and it doesn't need to take over your multiplayer experience. I know there are ways to change the default behaviour, but I shouldn't have to.
Apart from that the biggest ongoing hassle I've found after taming its intrusiveness is that it forgets PTT assignments now and again.
