I did it. It took me way longer that I thought it would, but very much worth it! Amazing films and your analysis of Kon's work is very insightful, especially how you describe Tokyo Godfather as coen-esque in its tone, is spot on! Hard to pick a favourite but I would probably go with Millennium actress - just a gorgeous film. Thanks for highlighting such an important filmmaker.

Whenever I hear someone say they don't like anime, I'm like nah, you haven't seen the right anime for you. Anime is a huge space full of great titles from a variety of genres. There's bound to be a few out there that you will enjoy.
Serial Expriments Laine: A total mindfuck about the relationship between people and the internet as well as the line dividing the virtual and the real. Despite being over 20 years old, many of its themes are still relevant today if not more so than when it was made.
Baccano: a nonlinear story set over several decades featuring a huge cast of characters. Part of the joy of watching this show is piecing together how all of the different stories connect and figuring out what the big mystery that connects them is.
FLCL: I can't even put into words what this show is. It's something you just have to experience. The best I can put it is that its a coming of age story, but in the most abstract way possible.
From The New World: The story is set in the distant future where all humans have telekinetic abilities and live in a utopian society where there is no war, famine, or poverty. The only thing children have to worry about is that they might disappear in the night and no one would even remember them if they did. From the New World follows the lives of a group of friends as they grow up in this society and uncover its secrets. It is probably my favorite show of all time because the villain was right. His crime was being born a mortal in the era of gods.
Now and Then, Here and There: A young boy gets transported to the distant future in the midst of a war. He then gets drafted into an army of child soldiers against his will by a maniacal dictator. Probably the darkest anime I've ever seen. Like, Death Note might be about a serial killer, but there is a level of distance between the MC and everyone he kills. He just needs to write a name. In NTHT, it is literally children killing children. There is no glamorization of death or violence, it's just tragic and brutal. But it has a happy ending.
These are just a few that I think everyone should see, no matter if they are an anime fan or not. Each one says something that I think everyone should hear at least once in their life. And if you don't appreciate any of these, then you might want to see a doctor because there's probably something wrong with your heart.
I've also been keeping a list of every anime series I've enjoyed so far. Well worth a peak if you're curious as to what's out there.

Satoshi Kon’s best aspect imo is his cinematography. Like he pushes it to the limit within the medium, and with animated works you can do so much cinematographically that surpasses what is possible with live action, that I’m aware of. RIP Kon

Satoshi Kon's unique style and story-telling will always be missed. But an anime director that, for me, closely comes to Kon's level of inventiveness and creativity in anime is Masaaki Yuasa. Some of Yuasa's earlier works resembles the psychedelic art and direction of Paprika. And Yuasa is one of the few directors who knows how to tell compelling and interesting characters in a short frame of time.
My fave Yuasa anime are Ping Pong, Devilman Crybaby, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken and Tatami Galaxy.
Though his other anime like Japan Sinks, Lu over the Wall, Ride your Wave, Mind Game (he must have been on acid when he made this one) and Kemonozume are all unique and fun in different ways.

Love the video. I started getting REALLY into anime movies this year. I don’t know what it is. Anime films tend to be a lot more engaging to me compared to American animated films and even popular anime shows. I’m glad that I got to discover the amazing Satoshi Kon, but it’s also upsetting that to learn about his tragic passing 12 years ago. It’s sad that he is not with us anymore, but it means we should continue to watch and discuss his filmography to keep his legacy alive.

It's awesome to see people reference his work to this day (particularly Paprika and Perfect Blue). Great video. I remember when I first saw his work 5 years ago I was completely mindblown, because it felt so much more unconventional, mature, creative and thought-provoking than the anime I've seen before. I am also not a big fan of those typical animes with big-eyed characters, simple linear stories and emotional naivety, so every time my friends tell me they don't like anime, instead of arguing I just recommend them Satoshi Kon.

Have you watched Mamoru Oshii's Ghost In The Shell by any chance? Seems like it would be up your alley considering your preference for cerebral/mildly trippy films. It's definitely one of those slow burn movies that you have to sit and process, but after my 2nd-3rd watch I really came to appreciate all the layers of symbolism it uses in everything from its cinematography to its music choices to discuss its themes. It's as dense as a cyborg diver at times, but I kind of love it for that, since it just means there's always more to notice and unpack with each viewing.
(Plus it also introduced me to the Stand Alone Complex anime series and the incredibly adorable Tachikomas, for which I'll be eternally grateful.)

I then watched all the rest of it over time, having consumed it all by the early 2010's. Except for one. To this day, I haven't seen Perfect Blue, because like with a couple Terry Pratchett books, I want to leave that last bit of Kon untouched for a while longer. Something yet to look forward to.

The video did not mention Kon's other work "Magnetic Rose". It is the 1st part of the 3 part 1995 film "Memories". If you like surreal with a message, try 'Death Parade', "Tatami Galaxy' or 'Aku No Hana/The Flowers of Evil'. I will always recommend 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' to anyone who want to get into anime, but it tends to be a bit polarizing to it's viewers, love it or hate it type of thing. It starts off as one thing and then develops into this hole that you can dump all your time into figuring out, what Hideaki Anno really meant. When in reality he was trolling us all and rejecting fandom in general, maybe? I don't know because he won't say!...... Anywho, try those out and maybe you will enjoy them. Thanks for the videos.

It's funny that my toe dip into anime is so reflective of yours. The first anime show I ever completed was Death Note and I loved it! I watched the first 3 seasons of Attack on Titan but for some reason haven't gone back. I also love Your Name. but for some reason didn't check out his other movies. You've convinced me to go ahead and check out Satoshi's movies. Paprika and Perfect Blue have been sitting in my Watchlist FOREVER. After watching the footage from Paprika, I am SO much more intrigued. I love how unconventional it looks compared to other anime styles which (to me) always seem to blend into that overly polished look where everything just looks too pretty. Like you said, it looks like he is willing to make his characters more realistic/ugly which really grounds it and makes it more believable. Junji Ito does this as well in his art when he isn't drawing horrific nightmare inducing shit.

Finally, someone else who isn't enamored with Miyazaki. The only thing of his that I enjoyed was Future Boy Conan.
I'm glad you were able to get into Kon. I wish he was able to finish Dreaming Machine.

You aren't wrong. He was the best there's ever been. I'll never forget where I was when someone told me he was dead. He'd already been dead for years, but It still felt like the world had suddenly become a slightly shittier place.
Anime has always leaned heavily into escapism and wish fulfilment. But sadly It feels like it's gotten even worse lately with non stop adaptation of isekai light novels. But Satoshi Kon always had a weird way of both indulging in and then subverting that kind of escapism. I feel like Dan harmon does something similar, just in a different way/tone. If you haven't already, then you might want to check out FLCL. Its not exactly life changing. But its got a solid sound track. A good mix of the real and surreal. A well crafted animation style. And best of all its only 6 episode.

As far as Miyazaki is concerned, I do think you'll come around to them a bit as you get older. That isn't to imply any immaturity, just that something about his brand tends to connect with the very young and the much older. Even movies of his I really liked on a technical level as a teenager didn't really resonate with me until I was in my late 20s and 30s.

Haven't watched most of the video, but if you want GOOD, but DIFFERENT anime, try out Anohana and Made in Abyss. I watch a LOT of anime, and I don't love most of it, and wouldn't recommend most shows, even ones that I particularly like, especially to someone who hasn't liked a lot of anime, but those are really strong.

Kino no Tabi (you can watch this show out of order, kind of the point), 1st season of Mob Psycho 100 as well as One Punch Man, Patlabor (weird in how it is a really well executed cop show with robots, pretty much one of the best mecha anime ever made), Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia (or other studio Trigger shows, generally they have a pretty distinct style and thing going on), Trigun (that 90's anime that nobody ever seems to talk about anymore), Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō (thanks, Kenny), and if you want to get proper weird, get into OVA's from the 80's and early 90's.

The most common reading of Perfect Blue tends to paint it as a criticism of parasocial relationships and how we treat celebrities, and I think that's an accurate reading, but interestingly, Kon said that wasn't the point of film. It was meant to be about how society treats women, and what it means to be a woman in this world. We see Mima agreeing to do things she really doesn't want to do because she sees it as the only way to have any semblance of a career. The best example is the most controversial part of the film: the rape scene. The male producer thinks that Mima doing a rape scene to ditch her idol persona and be taken seriously as an actress is a no-brainer, while Rumi, a woman, is completely against it. We see Mima enthusiastically agree to it. And then we have to watch it happen. We know it's all acting, Mima knows it's all acting, and yet it's still incredibly difficult to watch. It feels real, even though the viewer and the characters know it isn't. And then later, finally, we get to see Mima's true feelings when she's home alone later on. *Of course* she didn't want to do it, but she felt like she had to. The rape scene may have been fake, but that doesn't mean she doesn't feel as if she'd actually been raped for real. It paints a terrifyingly real picture of what it can feel like to be a woman in society, and that, according to Kon, was the point.

here is my weeb watchlist based on writing
    1. mob psycho 100 (the better then one punch man in writing, and in my opinion funnier)
2.JoJo's bizzarre adventure (skip part 1 and then come back at the end or you will drop it) I suggest starting with part 4 then part 3 and part 5 then part 2 then finally part 1
    3. konosuba (hilarious but not much else)
    4. kaguya sama: love is war (death note if it was a rom com)
    5. horimiya (surprisingly the best rom com on this list)
    6. puella magi madoka magika (magical girl horror)
    7. code geass (my current obsession. death note meets Gurren laggan with some of the best writing I've seen)

  • @userasdf
    @userasdf 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Recommendations from me anyway, Madoka Magika (it's short and not what you expect from the cover art/first couple episodes) and of course Full Metal Alchemist: brotherhood (Don't watch the original anime. Brotherhood is the better version IMO). I'm not very prolific in my anime watching either but the ones I have watched are my favourite stories. (Naruto kind of ruined me for anime for a while... 1000+ episodes with such a disappointing ending...)
