    Historically men at arms do counter archers with their shield and armor in the context of European warfare. A heavy Warbow can penetrate riveted chainmail with gambeson, and some metal armor such as brigantine and cheap plate armor, but adding a shield will significantly reduce your chances of injury. The bow is more useful against unarmoured cavalry, medium armor and unshielded units. There are of course exceptions

    • @redcastlefan
      @redcastlefan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      we are talking about a man at arms not something like a heavily armored knight. I understand that they shouldn't be completely countered by archers but their sponginess is just absurd.
      heck english archers are not that weak compared to the archer line. honestly they need a buff

    • @Asterix958
      @Asterix958 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, cavalries should have low Pierce armor (even full plate + barding Knight isn't as strong as heavy infantry) but they should have immense bonus damage against archers (archers didn't have spears, they only have short sword for defending himself) just like pikeman against Knight. I made a list that + mean soft counter, ++ medium counter, +++ heavy counter.
      Heavy Cavalry: + + + swordman, - - pikeman, + Light Cavalry, + + archer, = crossbowman, - - hand cannoneer.
      Light Cavalry: + swordman, - - - pikeman, - archer, - crossbowman, = hand canonneer.
      Swordman: + + archer, + + spearman, + crossbowman, = hand cannoneer.
      Archer: + + spearman, + + crossbowman, + hand cannoneer.
      Spearman: - - - hand canoneer, - crossbowman.
      Crossbowman: = hand cannoneer.

      @@redcastlefan the other archers use short composite bows that are more efficient. The English just overcomes this with brute draw weight. In terms of other cultures it depends. Some horse nomads shoot heavy bows too such as the mongols and manchus

      @@redcastlefan Considering that knights were also referred to as "man-at-arms" when they served in an army, there isn't much difference between the equipment of the two.
      Though them "countering archers" is a rather weird claim by OP - bowmen were used extensively in the age of plate armour until gunpowder weapons seriously outperformed them. Real battlefields don't work like video games.

      In my opinion, I really don't enjoy the fact that early game has lost its value.
      At least from the games I have played, everyone mostly ended up turtling themselves in, and turning everything into these long, drawn out matches, with barely any skirmishes.
      AoE 2 had fun skirmishes, and you could out maneuver your enemy, by plopping up with an entire barrage of baracks behind his own town.
      In AoE 4, maps are way way too large, for a proper rush to have any significant game ending effects.

    One thing I noticed during the 100 year war campaign is that the Arbalétrier is countered by the longbowmen due to the longer range. If the Arbalétrier has it's pavise ability up then it cant move, meaning that the longbowmen can safely shoot at the Arbalétrier beyond the Arbalétrier's range. If enemy Arbalétrier move into range and use their pavise ability all you have to do is move a few tiles back and safely fire at them from your superior range while the enemy cant shoot back.

    With 20 years of aoe2 experience and about 25 hrs in aoe4, i kinda feel like the man-at-arms need something. Granted man-at-arms certainly can do their job, lower pop needed lower gold cost and still tanky enough to get the job done. Yet still, I've been able to ignore man-at-arms for many situations in a lot of matches so far, and as an overall feel for the matches i've played, i can effectively play around the man-at-arms at many points throughout the ages by having their counters on hand, opening up the flood gates for me to spam cavalry and ranged units.
    Its really cool that spearmen have a brace mechanic to help them counter heavy cav charges, and i feel like man-at-arms need their own ability as well.
    Something like the ability to make a shield wall that can absorb cavalry charges OR ranged attack damage from archers, at the cost of heavily reduced speed. (keyword is OR, they should only reduce damage from one damage type at a time). I think that could create a more engaging dynamic, allowing the man-at-arms to perform better on the battlefield vs typical counters, at the expense of requiring a higher skill ceiling with micro and the increase in spatial awareness late game to avoid the devastation of mangonel shots vs a deliberate blobbed group of infantry.
    EDIT : Ontop of the fact that they'd be even bigger sitting ducks for crossbows. Sure their shield wall can reduce the incoming damage from ranged attacks, but the crossbowman extra damage bonus should still penetrate the damage reduction simply because the man-at-arms are moving so slowly they open themselves up to more bolt salvos.
    I think giving man-at-arms that kind of ability has the potential to give the counter system a lot more variety and increase the number of potential outcomes, let alone the plays required to pull them off.

      A whole 25 hours in AOE4? *Laughs in 85 hours*
      PS. Men at Arms are fine. They fill the role they're designed to do. Giving them extra resistance against crossbows or absorbing cavalry charges negates Horsemen and Spearmen. MAA are a general purpose, slow moving meat shield unit and they fill that role perfectly. @@shykorustotora if there are mangonels or other aoe weapons, they just delete enemy infantry, or even knights, if theres enough of them. Chinese bombards with 12 range and fast fire are awesome. AoE siege weaponry is really bad because of no friendly fire. They are surely expensive, they track the target, so one can evade it somewhat. But a whole formation ? 3 stones and each one does aoe. Surely it is not guided, like gun arty, but that one is not doing aoe, which is good to prevent arty overspam.
      Springalds and other non-aoe can overkill a single target, but a mangonel has no such issues, even if intended target evades, others are getting it and on top of that no friendly fire = bad. Perhaps increase the rock spread, reduce each stone aoe and then you can increase the rock damage. So that the rock hurts, it actually would need to hit. Those hyper-fast rocks, those should also fly slower. A balanced approach. Right now there is nownside to wide aoe at all.

      - Cavalry have speed and now ALSO have access to extreme burst damage through charge ability.
      Man at arms have... ??? They CAN still tank. But I can literally achieve the same outcome in many different situations with a line of spears and ranged units while my cav wreck absolute face from the flank.

    9:45 I've been playing delhi a lot lately and bombards are an alright soft counter but you need a large mass of spears in front just to block the from getting in close because once an elephant is in there is no running away from it. However, something underrated I find is the springald. The springald is cheaper and with even just a few of them it's quite easy to micro down an elephant. They're ironically faster too despite being siege. Tower Elephants are not siege, but I'd argue that springalds are a hard counter to them.
    Horsemen are deceiving because you'd think that bonus damage will help, but it's really not enough and complicated by the fact that a normal elephant hard counters them so the delhi player only needs to mix in a few elephants to protect themselves against any onslaught of horsemen. Knights are also tricky because you'd think they'd be good, but if the delhi player has crossbows o the elephants and other normal elephants it is way too costly. Best to stick with siege and spearmen, maybe backed by crossbows too if you're confident with your micro
    Edit: I missed a big one, the ribauldequin is a ridiculous counter to elephants. The only problem with it is like the bombard you have to have units in front to block the elephants, however if you have the choice always go ribauldequin against elephants.

    A note with the men in arms vs knights... HRE men in arms are a fairly hard counter to knights (though not the hardest) with the maces upgrade, with two handed weapons increasing it even more.
    Two handed weapons by themselves make HRE men in arms a neutral counter to knights, with a slight advantage when knights are only using melee and already used their lance cooldown.
    English men in arms with the armor clad bonus has pretty much the same effect as two handed weapons, however having the battle last longer so hit and run tactics using the lance cooldown from knights would be slightly stronger.
