I don’t know the writer’s intentions but I always kinda felt like Amber didn’t really know Mark was superhero, like maybe she just said she did to try and save face or something because she was still pissed and didn’t want to look like she was fooled by him

This episode is why Amber get's so much hate. If she knew for a long period of time that Mark was a superhero why did she blow up at him last episode for "not being there"? Like, at that point she's should've just confronted Mark about his being a superhero instead of continuing to yell at him for being late or absent for things she knows he has no control over.

Show Amber is the sacrificial lamb to wokeism and SJW culture. Some blue hair brought on for an equality hire saw comics Amber as Mark's love interest, and demanded she be changed to black, and to have SJW trash politics injected into the show.
So Kirkman agreed, and rolled it all up into one character, knowing that Amber will be gone from the story soon enough anyway.
Don't believe me? Check out the "recommended reading list to impress Amber" that William tells Mark to look into early on in the season. One of the authors is a black supremacist that believes all white people should exterminated.
Fourth wave feminism, yadda yadda yadda.
The person demanding the woke crap be added to the show is not a forward thinker, they rarely are. They don't have the intelligence for it.

@@jerekheadrick3379 comic book amber was a little boring yes but at least she was more caring and understanding and her love for Mark was strong , why couldn't black Amber be just that ? a loving, caring gf . why make her so aggressive ,snappy and intolerant to him when she already knew ? they wanted to make her more assertive but they just turned her into a b**ch . she's supposed to be 17 , why does she talk like a 35 yo woman ? 🧐
it's more understandable for a character like Eve to act more mature, because she deals with real life tragedies every days , but Amber thinks that soup kitchen matters more than saving lives . she's smart enough to figure out he's a sup but not enough to figure out why he didn't tell her right away ? 🧐

@@eglantinepapeau1582 Do not get why you're defending comic Amber like she was his Mary Jane, she cheated on him at that party when Mark went looking for William. 💀
Kirkman has stated with every comic to show adaptation that the shows are what he wanted to do with the comics, i.e The Walking Dead, this is no different. Amber in the show (great job calling her Black Amber and exposing yourself btw, you should do that more often) is more relatable due to her still being emotional about Mark's absence. She's upset because he never told her, seems pretty simple to me.
Now read up on some cultures besides America, cause that borderline racist shit you just spit out was BRAZY.

The reason people hate on Amber now is because she already knew Mark was a superhero and broke up with him without considering his responsibility to have a secret identity, while also expecting him to make the move rather than coming to him about knowing. She wanted him to go way past half way with being honest about his identity, while she chose not to be honest about knowing it. Either she doesn't understand the point of a secret identity, or she was too selfish to care for it's importance in place of what she wants. Yes, they should have broken up, simply because his schedule conflicted with the attention she needed from him.
To be clear, I'm not one of those "She's the bad one" type. They are still high school kids learning how to navigate the world. She has the right to be mad, because she feels Mark didn't trust her. At the same time, it is about protecting her as well.

Rex's backstory wasn't revealed yet in the show, but judging by his comic book story, I'd wager that much of the hatred he got from the public (all of it carefully planned by the showrunners) should melt away sometime in the future.
As A. Lincoln (or should we say The Immortal?) once said, "I don't like that man. I need to know him better".
And this is the last episode in which the Show treats us with kid gloves. The next episode is going to be brutal. And I do mean brutal. People had to hold on to their lunches watching that. Be warned.
About the Amber/ Mark thing, the etiquette for super heroes is to keep it a secret for as long as you can. Another show that dealt with this question (in many instances) was Superman and Lois. You might want to check on it.

I really hated this change to Amber from the comics. Up until this episode, all of her reactions to Mark are completely understandable, and the audience is almost universally on her side.
But then the reveal that she's known for *weeks* means that her recent behavior isn't just nonsensical--it's narcissistic and abusive. As soon as she knows he's a superhero, she'd be able to deduce what he was actually doing most of the times that he was late or absent: Invincible isn't some underground hero, he's relatively well-known, and his battles tend to be pretty flashy.
She *knows* that there are people who would literally be *dead* if Mark had prioritized dinner dates with her. She *knows* that he jumped in to save William at the campus, and got the shit beaten out of him. And she can probably guess that his "hit by a bus" excuse was more of a "beaten half to death" situation. And yet she yells at him in public for being a coward, and then refuses to speak to him.
And she's upset that he didn't reveal this massive secret after only *five months* of dating? That's insane...he didn't even tell his best friend whom he'd known much longer. And to top it off, revealing his secret identity *also* has a good chance of revealing his father's secret identity, on account of him yelling "Dad!" out in public when the aliens attacked and Omni-man showed up.
This isn't something that can be taken back if things don't work out. He'd be betting his friends' and family's safety against the discretion of a teenager he's known for less than a year.

I very much agree that Mark and Amber should have just broken up earlier in their relationship, because sticking with it just made them both look bad - if Mark couldn't trust Amber with his secret identity (which is valid), he should have just ended things rather than make himself look like a bad boyfriend and disrespect Amber's time.
At the same time, Amber should have just broken up with him instead of trying to find excuses to keep dating him after he kept showing up late or missing things he said he'd be there for. She could have also broken up with him once she, on her own, found out that he was a superhero - I mean, why not just confront him about it as soon as she figured it out?
Like, I definitely don't think Amber deserves as much hate as she gets, but I don't think she has any right to get so pressed about not being trusted with Mark's superhero identity, as they've only been dating for a few months. She has every right to be pressed about Mark being late and missing things all the time, as it IS disrespectful, regardless of the reasoning behind it (which I guess boils down to the whole "intent vs. impact" thing).

    • @project5877
      @project5877 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think people that date a superhero (especially one as dense as Mark) have a right to know what they are signing up for (at least by the time your relationship has lasted months). At the end of the day, if a supervillain targets those closest to them, they shouldn't be left in the dark. I think the show could have had more people side with her if she expressed her anger from that angle instead of this weird reasoning she has this episode. Like it would be really hard for Mark to argue with the fact that Amber's family could be in danger at any time and they have no clue or say in the matter. It may not be fair towards Mark, but I think more power in a situation like this should be given to the person who doesn't have superpowers as opposed to the person who can fly or crumple a car with their bare hands.

@@project5877 You are missing the point of the secret identity. It is there specifically to prevent super villains targeting those closest to the heros. The fact that Amber didn't know Mark was a hero is what was keeping her safe.
And no, it isn't something you just tell to somebody just because you have been dating for a few months. Because the moment something goes wrong and you break up, the possibility that she is going to get on Twitter and spill the beans in a fit of revenge is way too high to risk.

So no comment about how Amber had been lying to Mark for weeks? She knew exactly why he was late but still pretended like she didn't. She even chastised Mark for saving their lives at the college campus when Chester the android attacked them, despite knowing exactly why he "disappeared". It is the very definition of gaslighting. As soon as Amber figured it out (which is bullshit that she did) she should have immediately made a decision. Stick with Mark and accept how things are going to be, or decide that she doesn't want to be in a relationship with a super hero and all of the difficulties that entails, and break it off. But no. She decided to do neither of those things. Instead, she decided to be cruel, manipulative, and emotionally abusive.
And sure, Mark wasn't exactly the perfect boyfriend, but he never lied to Amber like she was lying to him. Yeah, he didn't tell her he was a super hero, for very good reason, but he also explained to her that he had responsibilities with his father, and he was having a hard time making it all fit. Which was 100% true.
And when Amber supposedly figured it all out, instead of cutting Mark some slack, realizing that what he was doing was bigger than their little high school romance, she doubled down on him, making demands she knew he couldn't keep, then blaming him and chastising him for not keeping them. And even when he did finally tell her, her only response is that he should have trusted her sooner for some reason? As if that is how trust works? Then flippantly told him to "fly away flyboy, or take the stairs. I don't give a shit." as if he never mattered to her at all. It was literally dehumanizing. How exactly is that not considered manipulation and emotional abuse?
And keep in mind, this is Mark's first relationship, but clearly not Amber's. She should know better. But she does it anyway.

My whole point is: Yes it's not fair to blame Mark, but Mark has the upper hand by knowing the truth. He knows he's deceiving her. He can fess up and deal with it, or keep lying and deal with that. Breaking up with her is really the only choice and he won't do it. @@funnylilgalreacts Except Mark wasn't deceiving her. He told her straight up that he had responsibilities with his father and was having a hard time balancing that with his personal life. Which as I already said, is 100% true. When Mark said that, Amber did not even attempt to ask him what those responsibilities might be, because she didn't even care. All she cared about was demanding that Mark "figure it out" and do what she wants. She never even offered to provide him with a little more leeway, knowing he was having difficulty.
The only person who really actually lied was Amber. She apparently figured out Mark was a hero, and new for multiple weeks, but still treated him as if she didn't know. She even berated and chastised him in public for "abandoning" her during the attack when she knew exactly why he left.
And people keep saying things like "he can just tell her" or "he can fess up" as if that is some easy solution. It isn't for 2 very good reasons.
      1. It is literally a matter of life and death. It isn't something you trust to just anybody.
      2. Amber already knew, and it didn't matter. Mark told Amber, and it didn't matter. Amber didn't want reasons, she wanted Mark to change. She wanted Mark to prioritize her over being a hero. Even if Mark told her from day one, it wouldn't have mattered.
And like I said, this is Mark's first relationship. He doesn't know any better. He wants it to work and is trying to make it work and giving up isn't really in his playbook. Amber has plainly stated that she's been in at least a few relationships already. She's the one with the experience and the knowledge.
Which brings me to the most obvious problem here. Amber is the one with the problem. She is the one that doesn't like how the relationship is going. So why is everybody mad at Mark for not breaking up with her? Why does Mark have to break up with Amber for her benefit? To save her from the relationship? Isn't she "strong independent woman" enough to handle that on her own?

What a brilliant villain reveal. Never was a character capable of such total dishonesty and brutal cruelty.
    Speaking of course of Amber.
Who it turns out - even after Mark had just saved her life *again* - decided to gaslight and humiliate and shame him for having "left her in harm's way" because it was the most hurtful thing she could think of to punish him for not having told her his most important secret just a few months into a high school relationship, something she has absolutely no right to have expected in the first place.

Amber was angry Mark wasn't spending enough time with her because he was off saving people's lives. She was also angry he didn't tell her his secret identity she figured out for herself, but never mentioned or hinted that she knew. Then got mad at him for prioritizing saving countless people's lives over getting to their dates on time. Never mind the fact that he was going out of his way to get gifts or trying to do other thoughtful things for her to make up for it as she herself said. Or that he was almost killed a few days ago, and was in the hospital for around 6 days. Amber had every right to be mad that he was late when she didn't know he was a superhero, but as soon as she figured it out, and still wanted to get mad at him for not being on time, she lost most empathy she had from me. Keeping his secret doesn't mean he doesn't trust you, that's not the reason superheroes keep their identities a secret from their loved ones most of the time, it's just a way to try to keep them a little bit safer(both you and the superhero). And probably a fear of rejection.
So keeping information that could put her in danger a secret, all the while making sure to buy her nice gifts, leave notes, and doing his best to maintain their relationship and balance a life he's still new to makes him an asshole- because he wasn't ready to tell her yet -but her keeping it a secret that she knew is fine, even though the more responsible thing to do would be to just tell Mark " Hey, I know you're Invincible let's talk about how it's affecting our relationship."
That's a five-month relationship at most, and he's been a hero for at most 9 months at this point(I think). She thinks he should be ready to tell her his biggest secret and that he's stringing her along just because he likes her but isn't ready to give up his biggest secret?
He wanted to make it to all those dates, it's not his fault villains were attacking. He can't plan for stuff like that. He didn't even tell his best friend, whom he's known for a lot longer, and he was lying to him for just as long. He saw William less than he saw Amber, and William understood just fine. Sure, he's not romantically involved with Mark, but they're still close. I can understand her being mad at being lied to *if* she wasn't also lying through omission about knowing he's Invincible. But she knew for weeks that he was putting his life on the line to protect her and other people, and was still mad that he disappeared to save William and made a point to belittle him publicly for it. Even though she knew and saw that it was Mark getting his ass kicked by the cyborg while he was protecting everyone there.
I don't think Amber can handle a relationship with a hero, but the comics handled the relationship better. In the comics, she thought he was involved with drugs, and that's why he was making bad excuses and missing dates. She realized the truth after talking with some friends about him, and they consummated their relationship. Her reasoning that he's making her feel stupid and unimportant kinda goes out the window when he literally does everything he can to keep you happy, and all you do is make crappy jokes and complain, the stupid thing is especially dumb since she knows he's a superhero and that the best superhero team on the planet was murdered a few months ago, why wouldn't he be cautious about who he tells? You called him out on his excuses for being late and he bought you an $800 gift to make up for one missed date. How are you feeling stupid or unimportant? Everything is already about you, and your clearly smart enough to figure out his secret identity.
Eve showed that she wanted to start a relationship with Mark, but when she saw that he was with Amber, she backed off and even tried to help them stay together. That's someone Mark could realistically have a relationship with, without all the drama that comes with dating a regular person.

I was getting ready to view your reaction Invincible S1-E8, but I saw that this video for E7 was posted 5 days ago and the edit for the S8 reaction might still be in production.
I’m also a relative latecomer to the series, watching season 1 this summer after coming off the high of The Boys last season finale and I was not disappointed. I actually went full nerd and purchased the first Invincible Compendium for Kindle/Comixology, because of how much I loved the show, so I could see how much the comic differed from the animation. My original intention was to stop at the point where the show stopped and then continue along when Season 2 finally gets released, but I caved and bought and read Compendium 2 and later 3 and I loved all of it.
IIRC it’s been a good 15 years since the first issues dropped, so you can see how Kirkman refined, streamlined and in many ways improved and updated the storytelling for the screen. The last time I recall a film surpassing the original material like a comic or novel was Fight Club, the book was superlative, but the switch to the big screen the way that played out that screenplay was just superlative and it elevated the storytelling to what I’d consider to be a masterpiece, so although I partially spoiled some of the plot points for myself, I’d say it’s akin to a fan of any comic book, watching an animation or finally watching how it has been adapted to the big screen and was rarely disappointed.
There are little but welcome nuances of change that came with the transition from comic to animation, like making Amber’s character a person of color, with an appreciation for the Filipino culture. Although they did not name the dessert that Mark and Amber had on their date, it was unmistakably Halo-Halo. In the comic, she was certainly a love interest, but she also happened to be a blonde in the comic and didn’t have as many dimensions aside from being in love with Mark and dealing with the complexities that he is also Invincible. The Green Ghost was also a white male in the comic and Shrinking Rae was Shrinking Ray, also gender changed for the sake of diversity.
I’ve also been watching many Invincible reaction videos like yours, and I found it to be a great way to pass the time while waiting for Invincible season 2 to drop. I also must say that most of your intuition throughout the series thus far has been spot on only getting caught whiffing a couple of curveballs like Robot’s character arc, but finally having those “aha” moments leading up to where you finally figure out what he was on about, and being spot on with Debbie, William and Amber’s characters. Needless to say, I can’t wait to see your reaction to the season finale.

"I don't know if they give us the cat guy's name" - not out loud, but in the subtitles he's referred to as "Battle Beast" which I think is his canon name.
The Amber thing... I have some feelings about the writing on this. I think it's good that they're not leaning on the oblivious girlfriend trope, but I feel like they really bungled the execution. In hindsight, this twist should have made a lot more sense. I think the real key thing that would have made it a lot more reasonable was if Amber, before, when they were "starting over" before their trip to the university, she asked Mark specifically, "This time, can I trust you to tell me the truth?" or maybe later, she jokes about secrets or asks about keeping secrets or something that would give us a hint that she knows something that's being hidden from the audience. And when he says she can trust him without saying that he's a superhero, she can sigh or maybe look conflicted, and then that would make the boiling point at the university a lot more justifiable. But as it's written now, it feels like they wanted to execute the twist so that everyone gets blindsided and for the audience to have this huge reaction to Amber knowing the entire time, but they failed to do what a well-constructed twist does. It drops hints where you could have figured it out, so that in hindsight it was clear as day what the hints were. When I re-watch Invincible, I can't pinpoint when Amber thinks that Mark is a superhero, so it comes off as a twist for the sake of being a twist. She says she's known for a while, but it doesn't help when we can't tell in which episode she figured it out.
I think that the side-effect of this is making Amber seem unlikable and kind of selfish, but with a little tweaking this could work. It just felt like they prioritized the twist over writing the characters properly. Some people have proposed drastic re-writes for Amber, but I don't think that's necessary. I just think that, if they did drop hints, they were a bit _too_ subtle, so the twist doesn't feel earned, and it just feels random.

Nah man, Amber never asked to date a superhero, she wanted a normal relationship, Mark decided for her that she needed to be dating a superhero who didn't have time for her. She is justifiably pissed that Mark has lied to her and strung her along for 5 months without trusting her enough to tell her the truth (we only saw snippets of all the times he's been a bad boyfriend in that time). Mark decided to keep the relationship going for selfish reasons, because he wanted to have everything, no matter how it made Amber feel. If Mark felt that Amber couldn't know who he was and why he was being such a shit boyfriend, then he should have ended the relationship and let Amber find someone else. And besides, the 'he didn't tell her to keep his loved ones safe' doesn't exactly work, because she is one of his supposed loved ones, and her not knowing just puts her in more danger because she doesn't even know there is a chance a villain could find out his identity and she could become a target. He decides for her to put her in that danger instead of telling her and letter HER decide if she wants to be in a relationship with a superhero.

    • @danieltaylor4185
      @danieltaylor4185 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@VelcroSnake93 I wasn't saying "it could work" in the sense that the relationship could work - I knew it was bad and I think Mark deserves to be broken up with. Mark simply can't provide for Amber's needs, and there's nothing wrong with breaking up over something like that. While it would suck for Mark because he loves Amber, they aren't obligated to stay together just because Mark is a superhero. Just because he can justify his actions on a moral level, that doesn't mean that they should stay together as a couple. I agree with OP throughout the whole series thus far, that Mark and Amber would not last. And I think that's true regardless of if Amber knows about his powers or not.
What I was saying is that, from a writing perspective, I think it could have been written better. Nothing needs to change about how Amber feels about Mark, or the concept of her knowing he's a superhero and testing Mark to see if he'll tell her or not. I actually think that's a really interesting direction to take when writing a story about a superhero who has a boyfriend/girlfriend. My only issue is that, as far as a twist goes, there really aren't many indications that Amber knew, or when she figured it out. When people get plot twists where they don't get enough hints that there was something going on, they get frustrated instead of having some kind of "mind blown" moment. I think some people just displace this frustration onto Amber, even though, in my opinion, she's actually in the right. Trust is very important in a relationship, and every time Mark pretends that he's just a normal person to Amber when he was actually out fighting crime or saving the world is damaging to the trust that Amber is going to have for him, when she knows that he's lying to her.
Some people are going to think that Amber was wrong regardless, I just think that some people would be less likely to say that she was in the wrong if it were a lot clearer that she was hiding something from Mark, rather than being the "Oblivious Girlfriend" beat for beat up until the reveal. There are times where she tells Mark she doesn't like how he's late all the time, and that's fine. I just think that it overlaps too much with the trope and that we should have gotten at least a couple more clues than her just not being satisfied with the relationship.
Or maybe I'm just bad at picking up on subtlety.

    • @that.ll_do_pig

The main reason she is judged harshly is because of how she publicly shamed Mark after the college campus attack when she already _knew_ he was a hero and why he "disappeared "
She "put up with all of his bullshit" and then dumped and stonewalled him when he was ready to talk. _Then_ she compared his _father_ lying to Mark to Mark keeping his secret from her. The writers made it really easy to judge her.

12:13 And that's why everyone hates Amber.
She's a narcissist who gaslighted and guilt tripped Mark. I was completely with her, right until this moment, in which she hit rock bottom for me. Telling someone your secret identity, after just a few months, especially at that age, is just stupid. And it wouldn't even be just his secret identity, but also that of Nolan. There's literal lives at stake here, including that of Debbie. If she knew, she should've either broken up with him if she cannot handle having a superhero as partner, or just be supportive and understanding, since Mark is literally saving people's lives when he comes late. And not being a hero when you have those powers? I mean come on. It's hard to imagine good people not doing it. With great power comes great responsibility!
