The pet allegory with Debbie is a great one because, however you like to see it a human can have a pet like a cat or a dog and can truly love that pet, even considering it like a family member but even if that person truly loves that pet, it knows that it will outlive it and is far more stronger and smarter than the pet, even if truly want is the person could never see the pet as an equal besides Omni man was trying to convince himself as much as he was fighting mark that he was not changed on his time on earth

"You dad. I'd still have you." Shows why he's Invincible, not because of his powers but because of his spirit. Even after everything his father did, he still loved him and believed he'd be there for him 500 years from now. I like to think everything Nolan was saying to Mark is actually him trying to convince himself off what he's doing, not to convince Mark.

I love how layered the show is. It's easy to look at Nolan and be upset at him, but that's a little short-sighted considering his indoctrination and the length of time he's been alive. If you lived for thousands of years, conquering planet after planet, the whole time knowing the inevitability of Viltrum overthrowing this new planet and that the life you're living peacefully with Mark and Debbie will be just another forgotten footnote... it puts things into a different perspective we can't relate to, but can empathize with. It's not about Nolan's actions being "right" or "wrong", but about his pragmatism and there being no way to 'play house' any longer once Mark is discovered to be one of Nolan's people. It's the illusion being shattered. Nolan would have been much happier had Mark never developed powers. Throughout the episode (and the series), Nolan is shown to feel guilty about what he's doing, believing it's now an inevitability, battling his indoctrination with his feelings for Mark and Debbie. He throws out tons of qualifiers and disclaimers that he DOES love them, but Debbie--no matter what--will live a fraction of his lifetime, hence the 'pet' comment. He's preparing himself to do his duty. Sometimes people say nasty things because it's easier to cause a full break from someone and give them closure than it is to leave them with constant unanswered questions. Think of how'd you feel if the life you're living right now was one of a 100 you'd have and then look at how he answers the episode's questions.
It's not really that much different than Nolan being a colonist and Earth being the early Native Americans. He tried to make a life, he tried to enjoy what time he could while always having in the back of his mind the notion that other colonists would come one day. That eventually, colonists would wipe out the Native American way of life and it was just borrowed time. He's seen it thousands of times before. Experience guides logic.

If you think about it, he’s probably never had anything close to the life he lead on Earth for those few short years. Lord knows what kinda childhood a person born on Viltrim has. Probably like Sparta or something. Then he went from genocide to genocide for 1000’s of years. This sending an officer to prepare a planet for conquest thing is new. This is probably the first time he’s ever had any kinda regular life. Probably has tons of kids he’s never met because I’m assuming their breeding programs don’t involve parenting as we know it. Probably just mated and went on to his next war. Never being able to raise a kid. I’m speculating but the point is, this 20 years was probably the best his life has ever been and it changed him.

      @@Anubisblack so spoiler here:
On viltrum, if you like a mate, you take it. Woman or man. If they get raped they assume they deserved it for being too weak to stop it. Usually, you pick someone "strong" so you can have strong children. Viltrum ain't like earth. I think super weak kids are killed immediately. Based on what thragg did on the bug planet they likely have nurseries, but after it becomes a toddler it has to be strong enough to not die to random viltrumite stuff by accident, then "teenagers" get sent into the field. If you die, you were too weak to live.

I like that throughout the entire episode and last, whenever Nolan is arguing why he has to do this to other people...he's also arguing with himself. He loves his life here, as short as it has been, and he's struggling to come to terms with the fact that he doesn't want to do it, but is so certain he has no other choice.

  • @gork8468

The Viltrimite purge montage shows that Viltrimites can die to something as strong or stronger than a Viltrimite. They're long lived, tough, and heal quickly - but not invincible or immortal. They're also not all equals by default - they can get stronger and tougher by pushing themselves, like Nolan said when they were flying over the desert. Mark *needs* to be pushed in order to get more powerful, so getting his butt kicked is kind of good for him. With Viltrimites, it really is 'that which doesn't kill you....'.

You gotta remember he sent mark across the city with one punch and he’s been shown to be fast enough to catch up to the flung mark. Only reason he’d think to do this is if he *knew* that viltrumites have the medical technology to help mark recover

  • @TankInATree
    @TankInATree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

What Nolan told about Viltrum shows just how significant his change of heart is.
Logically we can say that by removing the "weak", he wasn't talking about physical strength, but those who had empathy and couldn't kill others, including family and friends. All that would be left is psychopaths and sociopaths with no regard for the life of others or loved ones.
I don't know how old Nolan is at this point, but considering how he looked in the flashback, it has probably been at least 1000 years of strengthening that attitude in him. He has killed countless beings without a care... and it was unraveled in 17 short years.
Nolan is a terrible person, but I can understand just how strange of a Viltrumite he is... it is very much a "miracle" what happened.

    • @yessum15
      @yessum15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

@@TheBreathless24 In the comics 90% of the Doomsday fight takes place in sparsely populated areas far away from the city and it is an explicit priority of Superman to minimize civilian casualties.
One of the things that makes the fight so compelling is Superman having to juggle between saving civilians and fighting Doomsday. A major part of the whole plot is keeping Doomsday *away* from cities.
It's really only the last few minutes of the fight that take place in Metropolis and even then civilians casualties are minimized for 2 reasons:
      1) Both combatants are so tired they're pretty much standing toe-to-toe and just trading punches.
      2) Doomsday cannot fly, so although he's very strong, he's not really able to dictate _where_ the fight takes place and Superman can at least keep him semi-contained to the middle of the large streets.
The biggest issue really is not the direct contact with civilians but rather the damage caused by the shockwaves generated every time they hit each other.

If Dragonball Z would have an R-rating. The Viltrumites are similar to Saiyans in DBZ. And Nolan is basically Vegeta back in his evil days, teaching his son Trunks how weak and fragile humans are compared to them. (Nolan is also if Goku didn't bump his head (lost his memory) and continue what he was ordered to do on invading the planet he was and so forth). In the Dragonball series there is so much destruction and human casualties, but you don't get to actually see all the gore behind that. And thats why you care less about it. This show just goes the Hardcore way, and i love it. We have enough Disney and Marvel stuff for kiddies these days.

When they’d eat at nearby restaurants wearing the Superman costume, they’d get mobbed for autographs and photos. Whenever they’d go dressed as Clark Kent, they were virtually never bothered.

All those horrible things Nolan said, about Debbie, about Mark, even about Earth... I feel he was saying them more _for himself_ than for Mark, that he was trying to distance himself from the people and things he'd learned to love. Donald was right, in the end it was his blood that got him.
This is why he was so upset when he learned Mark had powers; Debbie (and Mark) had made him go native; by that point he'd probably convinced himself that Mark wouldn't get powers, that he could essentially take an eighty or ninety year vacation before doing the job he'd come to Earth to do, that by that point, with Debbie and Mark dead of old age, he wouldn't have any ties to humanity and he'd be able to conquer Earth without remorse or regrets... but when Mark got powers suddenly he couldn't wait any longer; Mark would live thousands of years, so he couldn't wait for him to die, and now he had to train him and convince him before he became too powerful... or kill him, if he couldn't turn him.
And, in the end, his ties to his family, and to Earth, were too strong, despite his efforts to break them, and he couldn't force himself to do it.

The MVP award in this goes to Debbie & Mark for humanizing Nolan. During Nolan's final battle with Mark, Nolan was yelling at Mark but trying to convince himself (IMO).

While watching that beating, I didn't feel like Nolan was going all out on Mark. Instead I felt like I was watching how a Viltrum parent spanks their child for being "naughty".
As for Nolan comparing Debbie to a pet that didn't matter in the grand scheme. Nolan has the opposite viewpoint on things compared to Red Rush. Debbie's entire life must seem like a week to Nolan. From episode one - it seems deep down Nolan wished Mark was only human so he could wait until Debbie & Mark's old age deaths before conquering Earth.

So the cat guy is called Battle Beast, in the comics he's one of the most powerful beings in their universe.
He went toe to toe with the leader (and most powerful) of the Viltrumites, and while he eventually lost, the battle lasted days and devastated a planet.
I hope we see more of him in Season 2 and I'm wondering if they're gonna introduce the aforementioned leader of the Viltrumites at some point.
And you also have some interesting ideas for where certain stories might be going for future seasons.
As you said, seems unlikely Nolan would go back to Viltrum after abandoning his post, since he'd be seen as weak for leaving, and him going out in search of another race to help protect Earth would be a good way to begin some sort of redemption arc.
Of course at this point it's all just speculation, so we'll have to wait and see.

But I don’t think anything quite compares to that one. “You dad… I’d still have you.” is Quite possibly one of the greatest written lines I’ve ever seen. Even after everything Nolan said about Debbie, his friends, and his family- Mark loves him.
And that HUMAN LOVE is the only thing that stopped Nolan. We spent two whole episodes showing you that anything you throw at him, he can overpower. He can physically fight just about anything.
    But Nolan couldn’t fight *that*…

I may be in the minority here but I empathize totally with Nolan. It's easy to sympathise with Mark and humanities PoV simply due to the show being from their perspective,
Nolan is 1000s of years old, indoctrinated into a fascist society where strength above all matters, he came to earth where the population is akin to cows and dogs to us humans, hence the refering to Debbie as a pet (she lives for what is akin to a year of Nolans life span, so she is a pet which he does love)
He even delayed "uplifting" the planet until he was sure Mark was like him...
So much of Nolans thoughts and feelings are just not shown throughout the show until the last episode where he has committed to seeing his plan though.
I just find it's too easy for ppl to just say Nolan Bad (;_;)

Imagine you, being almost Inmortal, sent to a place to be weaken. You fall in love, so you delay your mission. You have a kid, but maybe you can live with them until they die, then follow your mission. But your son inherite your powers, so he is almost inmortal, like you. You have to confront the situation now he is young, cause you will have to confront him anyway. But you dont know how...
Imagine you, having to kill your wife and your son, cause there are powerful people who are gonna do it anyway, and because it is your duty as a military force.
You dont kill them, cause you notice that you loved them, and you cant it .
Doesnt matter how much you try to convince yourself that it is the right thing to do, you have changed.
You are going to be punished, dishonnored, posibly killed, by people much much powerful than you, cause you didnt fulfill your duty.
    You forgive them anyway.
"Fuck Viltrum, i love my family. But i already made a mess... What the hell do i do now?"
    Thats Omniman now.

If the Guardians had shown up to save those people where Nolan threw Mark, Nolan would have just killed them all like he did the original Guardians.

The comics are absolutely worth a read while you wait for Season 2. The show's main plot covers roughly issues 1 - 13 with a few stories pulled from later on (Robot becoming Rudy and Titan becoming the boss are both from the early 30s).
There are 144 issues of Invincible (as well as spin-off comics). There is still A LOT of story to go!

imagine noland as a child, watching his parents and granparents being exterminated due to weakness. He's not being a dick to mark, but hes def trauma dumping. to be fair, only mark could somewhat compare to noland. Fight ur fam, ur country, ur wife. if u dont u all die. gotta be strong to save the weak. u can see nolands blood shot eyes. he was honestly hoping his son wouldnt be a viltormite. not bc the challenge, bc nolands already done what mark will have to do.

When it comes to the Potrayal of Collateral Damage in this episode,I always felt that this is what Zack Snyder wanted to be able to do with the DC Superheroes but couldn't since it was owned by WB and had to marketed to the biggest Audience available, forcing Man of Steel's Final Battle between Zod and Superman to feel gratuitous but also not willing to go far enough to show the true depths of cruelty someone like Zod/Omni Man would sink too.

I just recently subscribed and just binged all your invincible reactions, and they are excellent. Even the ideas you had that didn't own out were interesting, and I really enjoy your reaction style. I liked pretty much all the changes they made from the comics, but the right with the guardians was my favorite. Omniman wipes them out without breaking a sweat in the comics, and this version works better because, if he can kill the world's most powerful team without damage, how are they a threat and why bother?

The sad things is Mark was right Nolan just didn't want to accept it, his love for his new life and his family, and another terrifying fact is....there are at least 6 more Viltrumites even stronger than he is, the three at the end of the Flashback make up three of them

What Nolan said was true, Mark's stubborness is the reason so many people died, if he only remain calm and pretend to agree with his Father, and come up with a plan later, none of this would happen.

    • @Khay-77
      @Khay-77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

No, it would have been way worse if he complied and Nolan notified Viltrum. At this point in the story there's absolutely nothing earth could have done to stop a Viltrum invasion, it's the wake up call they needed. Without Nolan nearly beating his son to death and thinking back on his time here with Mark and Debbie he would have gone through with his orders.

There was absolutely no way Mark could have beat his father. It was his strength of character and will to never give up that truly made him Invincible. Also, he's a dumb teenager and shirked his training repeatedly so he never really got stronger. It's something he learns from eventually.
