  • Graveyard Point agates are famous for the stunning plumes and patterns that can be found in the seams - but I never imagined something like this! Jim and I visited Graveyard Point in Oregon, accompanied by our friend and guide Julie. We explored an area that used to be an agate mine, but has since been abandoned, leaving piles of spoils behind. The traditional agate is thick and plumey, but the pieces we hauled out had something even more special - incredible blues and greens, cemented in matrices of orange and brown. I cut some of the pieces when I got home, and was amazed by the colors and patterns that I found inside the rocks. It just goes to show you - there are SO MANY beautiful rocks!

    I miss my Oregon beaches! I have the biggest fist sized chunk of opal I found in Oregon. No rock, just opal. So Oregon coast used to be my stomping yard and I’ll tell you my secret places. Agate beach near Beverly beach is really good. But the cream of the crop is the wayside pull off just north of Heceta Lighthouse. I think it’s mile marker 169. Hike down to the beach and at low tide you’ll find gorgeous fossils and agates and maybe a gorgeous chunk of opal. @Katiedid, this is why I’m still struggling on the Yellowstone. I’m having a hard time recognizing good stones and ages. One of these days, I’ll have to show you my Oregon beauties.
    Oh! If you find a flat round or oval sandstone rock, take the time to split it open down the side. They usually open fairly easily with some persistence. Inside you find whole shells and if you’re really lucky there will be a muscle belly, the agatized mollusk. They are stunning.

      Hey there! Keep trying on the Yellowstone - pretty soon you'll develop an "eye" for those agates, and then you won't miss the Oregon beaches so much. :)

    Have you experienced any issues with your 10" Covington saw? Any complaints? I'm considering picking one up this year

    • @KatyDidRocks
      @KatyDidRocks  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey there! The saw works great, the feed vice is fine. Biggest issue is that changing oil is a huge pain, as there are just two bolts in the front that you're supposed to remove to drain it. We added some copper pipes to make it easier, but it's still kind of a pain.
