Yup I agree. He needed to create some space to dry the powder in his second pistol. Clearly he had no confidence in an honest fight and believed his best chance was to get off a lucky shot
Maybe that's why his shot didn't kill edward. If he was trying replace the powder while running away from edward, than in his haste he probably didn't put a sufficient amount of powder in, which resulted in a weak shot that most likely just bruised edward.
My head canon used to be that he was so good at stealth that he had little to no experience with sword fighting. A little contradictory because how could you not kill Edwards in the woods where there’s all those trees and bushes, but maybe he wasn’t thinking straight.
I also think Edward could just be extremely talented since he puts down train soldiers like fodder. Plus he was able to adapt to the assassin style pretty quickly.

What the Assassin's Creed movie got wrong was that Duncan and Baptiste gotten descendants from modern-day that are loyal to the assassin doctrines. This makes no sense to me because their ancestors betrayed the creed for selfish reasons. Duncan betrayed the brotherhood for fortune and recognition. And Baptiste joined the Templars because his hatred for Jeanne Aveline's mother. Even he was angry at Agate his brother- in- arms for abandoning him to find her in Louisiana. This caused him to help the Templars reveal Agate's location and being their hidden spy.

@@Ash-Winchester It's just they witness their memories and have the bleeding affect with their ancestors trying to get into their mind. Ehhh the actions and reasons of your ancestors are not your own. Simple as that. Heck I think I remember there was a possible descendant of Shay that WANTS to work with the Brotherhood so there's that
After returning to england edward got a pardoned from robert walpole who also thanking edward for dealing with his cousin duncan walpole. I’d argue Duncan gets unnecessary hate. Yes he gets absolutely bodied, but if you take Edward out of the equation you potentially have one of the most influential assassins in all of the series. Imagine if Duncan had successfully defected, and given the Templars both the observatory and the sage. Leading the templars to completely destroy the assassins in the West Indies, and potentially even farther afield. And the only reason that he doesn’t succeed in this is because he meets Edward fucking Kenway. Who is ACTUALLY one of the most influential assassins in all of history. Almost single-handedly wiping out the Templars in the West Indies and the Americas. You can almost argue that Kenway killing Duncan was the most historically significant assassination in the entire series. I don’t fault Micheal Jordan for getting swept by Larry Bird, and I don’t fault Duncan for falling to the man who would become one of the most powerful and influential assassins ever. It honestly has nothing to do with training. (It’s also kinda obvious to me that you’re going to body him when he’s the first enemy you fight in the whole game). He also only fights you because he’s cornered, and AFTER trying very hard to run away. (Compare him running to Charles Vaine later in the game and I think the difference between an assassin and a non-assassin is obvious) Duncan’s death has always more highlighted Edward’s prowess than Duncan’s “lack of” for me. Edit: If that’s not enough, consider the fact that if Duncan had killed Edward, then NONE of the Kenways would have been born. The second most influential family in the entire Assassin Templar conflict, gone. No Haytham, No Connor. Just imagine what that would have done to the world… And his [Duncan’s] second pistol likely only worked because he had given it time to dry out before shooting it. I think it speaks to his intelligence that after attempting to shoot Edward, after he realized he was a threat, and the pistol was non-functioning he tried to escape. I think that’s the smartest next move. And considering that they both barely survived that shipwreck, I think he was rather calm and decisive where most might not be. That also speaks to his assassin training.
Honestly Duncan Walpole is just another reason, why the Assassins can be just as equally incompetent as some of the Templars. It's honestly a good thing, showing neither side is perfect, even if the Assassins are supposedly the "Good Guys".
@@Kenzar23 Edward was *not* injured and the shot did *not* happen because the synchronisation bar (health bar) decreased when Walpole shot him which means the shot did not happen to the real Edward.
I think you should do a video like this with Roshan from Mirage. I know she has a lot more screen time than Duncan but a lot of her backstory is left out of the games and it’s actually pretty interesting.
is it weird that i can kinda see a full on game happening that focuses on Duncan? i mean yeah he's a scumbag and a disgrace to the brotherhood - but it'd be interesting to see just how stupidely easy it took for him to not only defect to the templars, but to almost single handedly destroy the brotherhood as we know at the time
From the conversation between Edward and Rogers, it also seems Duncan was the type of man to flirt with not just a married woman, but also the wife of a man he intended to work with
I think Captain Chevalier de la Vérendrye from Rogue is up there as well. He got stomped by Shay, who’d only been in the assassins for a little while, if I remember right. Yet the Captain was a veteran of the seven years war and had decades more experience than Shay. He left his ship, (a man o war,) where it could be easily taken out and it couldn’t save itself, whereas a much smaller and barely outfitted ship did. Plus he was arrogant as all hell and remained as such to Shay, even after having his ass handed to him. And like the other assassins, refused to consider that their mentor’s repeatedly sending them off to retrieve the precursor artefacts was leading to potentially millions of innocents dying. Plus he shot Shay in the back like a coward, when none of the other blind to the truth assassins did so.
After finishing the game I got an idea that I wished happened in the game. First, when both him and Edward manage to get to the shore, show him extracting a large piece of wood that was piercing his stomach. This would be the reason for him being easily defeated, because he was too wounded to fight. When the governor assists to when they are declaring the sentence of Edward, Duncan would appear, citing that he could not be easily killed by a mere pirate, that he lied unconscious for a couple hors, then he woke up, stole a fisherman ship and got to the governor where he explained all that happened, being that the reason they discovered Edward wasn't Duncan. After Edward escapes and goes after the governor and the other templars, we would fight Duncan, having a way more difficult and epic fight now that he is in perfect conditions, that ultimately Edward would win once again, and we would get the classic talk on the white space where Duncan gives all his reasons for betraying the brotherhood, and Edward reflects that this could have been his own path if he didn't got forced to grow and change as a person.
Definitely agree with this. But also think Duncan Walpole is an honorable mention. The one and only time his character ever makes an appearance, he gets killed by a pirate who steals his identity. Not very assassin like
i like Walpole and wish we could have his robes (without mods) in game i do wonder how the story of ACBF would've shifted if Edward would've actually took the "offer" from Duncan. what nobody can deny is how sick Duncans entrance was in the opening tho
In defense of Walpole, even though its entirely hypothetical, he could've been the type to stay stealthy rather than all out combat like how Basim is pushed to do in Mirage. Also, though maybe guns didn't work like this, he could've went to clean or dry the other gun he jad before using it.
@@sozo4483 It's just like how people say that it's bad writing the Edward Kenway can do Parkour and fight before becoming an Assassin, forgetting that Ezio, Arno and Connor could do Parkour before becoming Assassins. Black flag is such a wild card in the series Now that Unity is partly fixed, probably the wildest Having a heartfelt storyline, nice look at the assasin/templar fight from a bystander perspective, with each side being somewhat sympathetic, great characters, one of the best ship mechanics (after some pirate game I forgot the name of) and bosses, boat hunting and actually good bell diving missions (I love them)... But also giving the ungodly terrible island collectibles, tailing missions (which, suprise, dont really affect me as much as these fucking small islands required to be searched individually), next to nothing in a dlc section, the worst master assasin and combat being less preferable, than qte to kill a man or make his future offsprings go through an earthquake for 3 seconds before killing a man
I never gave Duncan Walpole much thought/consideration until this video. I just seen him as a plot device to move the game forward. Maybe it would have been a better idea if he was written in a way where he wasn't a master assassin, and this was some kind of proving mission for him to be promoted or ranked up or something if he could complete this assignment.
Black flag was my first game, i knew nothing about the lore beforehand - all i knew was Assassin’s were almost unkillable and deadly killers. I was so surprised when Edward, a lowly privateer killed him so easily.
I feel like at that point of the time Brotherhood is like Jedi Order, you get promoted regardless of your abilities as long as you are believing in the tenets of the creed faithfully.
I need to say this because a lot of people forget this… from Edward killing Duncan, to the end of the game was 6-7 years. The first time you make it to Nassau, Ed Thatch (Blackbeard) already knows of you (from your past privateering days) and respects you as a combatant. There was no training time other then experience in those seven years. All the stat upgrades from gear and whatnot were gameplay features. Edward killing Duncan says more about Edward’s skill at combat than Duncan’s supposed lack of skill. It was mainly poor writing and decision-making. Honestly in the remake, they should have had them fight on the beach and then left Edward to explore… give him the good old “Make your way off the island” objective. It wouldn't change the story and it would be better for the lore.
on topic of the remake, i wonder if they're gonna do a flash back kind of thing where you play as duncan in the prologue and then the prologue we have right now is the first mission, its getting you attached to the character because you play as him before his untimely demise, it would also let ubisoft explore his backstory beyond what you described
I think what the creators were going for with Edward so easily killing Walpole is the insane amount of talent Edward has gives him an edge in every fight. It is mentioned throughout the whole game how talented Edward is, not only his physical skills, but also his 6th sense (the ISU sense/Eagle Vision) is insanely strong since he ''had it since he was a lad''. Additionally Edwardd seems to be really intelligent. Furthermore, the whole Kenway lineage seems to be insanely talented. Edward, Haytham and Connor all seem to have insane talent in combat and other physical traits, problem solving and ambition.
I think that this kind of characters are also needed in the franchise. They show that not every member of the Brotherhood has to be crystal clear goody two shoes but can be selfish and arrogant. That they are just normal people with some flaws.
Love your video and keep up the great work. You are awesome, and I think it is cool if we can play as both and we need to choose which side we want to be
To be fair, the Colonial assassins probably struggled to get anyone of use, so for whomever they could, trained whomever could handle it, and ranked whomever was at least somewhat competent. The rank of “master” for that brotherhood is probably akin to being a top ranked cop vs a top ranked marine.
eh Shay's turn was more because of stupidity and hot headedness. he only tried once to tell the Assassin's about the danger of the manuscript, and he did so while screaming like a madman and elaborating on nothing. did he calm down and come back later? no. as far as i'm concerned Shay might be a bit more righteous in his turn, but he's dumb as a brick. he had options. chalk it up to bad writing.
I mean, he may go about it in the worst case possible (given that he had just witnessed the destruction of Lisbon), but even he initially wanted to just take away the manuscript away and hid it. He didn’t even join the Templars until much later when he had witnessed the depraved levels in which the Assassins had gone to. Monroe and others didn’t reveal their Templar affiliations or even reveal the Manuscript they had taken from Shay until Shay had seen how the Assassins were behind the gangsters terrorizing New York and made up his mind on actually fighting the Assassins.
@@alexanderchristopher6237 well that's just my point. bad writing. he hadn't just seen Lisbon destroyed. it took six months or more to cross the atlantic. he had more than half a year to cool his jets and think about it, yet he acts like he just got off a four hour flight. and the assassin gangs terrorizing things is just pure character assassination, no pun intended. all this stuff blatantly defies the creed and it's never revealed until after Shay leaves. and again he could have talked reasonably to Achillies and they could have worked something out instead he chose the most bone headed path. it's just very contrived writing
7:26 I always thought this guy is descendant of some French assassin (first time I thought about Arno Dorian, but actually Lynch is Arno's descendant) because he has a phantom blade during the fight with Abstergo.
I remember I was playing the AC most praised games for the first time, and Black Flag was essentially my 4th after Ezio trilogy, and after 3 games of being the scary, intimidating ghost tale, you kind of forget how scary assassins are supposed to be to others? At least I forgot. And then opening to Black Flag. There is this assassin staring at me, with his hood on, unbothered by the storm. And I'm thinking, "I have plot armor, no way will I die in first mission, BUT WHY ARE THEY SICKING AN ASSASSIN ON ME???", all for the guy to die in 10mins. Like yeah, it's the beginning, but that's just embarassing my guy.
I like how this guy is a veteran and master assassin, but meets his end because of one greedy git with a chip on his shoulder waylaying his ship during a storm and killing him in single combat the day after.
I didn't even know there was this much lore about Duncan Walpole of all people. I have even read all of the AC games novelizations. In which novel is he featured in though?
Official Movie Novelization. There are four extra chapters exploring memories of the ancestors of the main Assassin group who assisted Cal in escaping Abstergo. Those were Duncan Walpole, Shao Jun, Baptiste and Yusuf Tazim.
Duncan sounds like Altair at the beginning of AC1, I wonder if Altair could have been manipulated to join the Templars had things played out differently 🤔
To clear up a little mistake you made the reasoning behind he didn't use his second pistol was because the gun powder in it would of been wet which is why the 1st one didn't work and why it his 2nd one is able to used later on as probably enough time would of passed for the gun powder to dry back up and the reason he was probably unable to kill edward with it too as probably wasn't able to fast enough from the gun powder being wet
So Duncan was written to be Edward's foil. Lol Edward successfully aided Governor Torres, Helped A Tabai and rebuild the West Indies branch of the brotherhood, defeated the Templars, secured the peice of eden, fully understood the Assassin's goal and Philosophy then returned to Britain and became a legend along with all the riches he gained from his time in the Caribbean. BTW and spoilers Edward met a similar end when he was stabbed by a regular crook but that was years after AC black flag and I think there were multiple of them.

I think that he reloaded the powder of the second pistol, as it would've been wet from swimming. At least that's what I've always thought
I never even knew he had a character. He was literally created just to die and give Edward an excuse to wear the hood.
Master assassin is our true hero, a guy who loves assassin’s creed who actually knows what he’s talking about
I remember when I first played AC IV, When Edward finally came face to face with Duncan after chasing him for a while, I was like “Damn we getting a Boss fight right at the start” and braced myself, and then Walpole died after just one Counter I was left stunned and laughing like crazy 😆
Same, I got so used to rpg games that when he died it was just utter culture shock. It was refreshing to play games like these, where humans are just as fragile as your charavter. Gosh i wish i could replicate that feeling again.
He was more competent in the manga (yes it has a manga), he dies after reaching to beach and nearly killed Edward in his last breath. Edward actually terrified of him. Wish we got that version.

Duncan is what a master assassin would be without plot armor. He’s great.
I remember defeating him for the first time, when I was 7 and it was incredibly easy
Also you should make more of these
He was easily defeated because he was HEAVILY wounded. Why does everyone forget this?
@@lucasgrey9794 well Connor was heavily wounded when he DEFEATED Haytham, and also Ezio in Revelations defeated that captain in the intro so, but fair enought, we all know that he is an idiot
@@TheSerbianAssassin13 Haytham literally let Connor kill him because he couldn't bring himself to kill his own son. Even the writers said this. Is there even a braincell between the average 100 AC fans?
@@lucasgrey9794 ok we all know he let him win, but you got to agree it's still a little impresive I mean Duncan doesn't seem like he is that hurt, like he still is able to parkour, run and fight with Edward. I mean if he was a Master Assassin atleast he would put up a good fight, but I guess that just depends on the way you fight with him. Because if you choose to just counter kill him, it would seem like he didn't even try, but if you play a little diffrently it he might last longer. I feel like this is pointless, like the game is 10 years old, but you are still correct about why Connor was able to kill Haytham
@@TheSerbianAssassin13 Parkour is much easier than fighting. Did Edward put up a good fight against the random pirates that beat him down after Roberts betrayed him? No.
The actions of your ancestors are not going to be the same actions you carry out. Duncan and Bapitiste may have betrayed the brotherhood but that's not a guarantee that their descendants would too.
@@Ash-Winchester It's just they witness their memories and have the bleeding affect with their ancestors trying to get into their mind. Most modern day people who were descendants of past assassin are civilians. It makes sense for Desmond to join the fight because he was born in the brotherhood and realized his parents were telling him the truth.
Ehhh the actions and reasons of your ancestors are not your own. Simple as that. Heck I think I remember there was a possible descendant of Shay that WANTS to work with the Brotherhood so there's that
This is not the direction that I thought the video was going. I am all for this.
I like the Assassin’s Creed: Rogue that we got, but I think people were expecting a story closer to Duncan’s for that kind of game.
After returning to england edward got a pardoned from robert walpole who also thanking edward for dealing with his cousin duncan walpole. Robert said that duncan brought dishonour to the family for betraying the assassin, even tho robert himself are neutral regarding the war between the assassin and templar
Seing how the animus recreate memories it would be hilarious after playing Edward eliminating Duncan like a low level guard to play as Ducan with the animus recreating him like a "Let me solo her" kind of oponent with overly stupi speed power and automatic counter to each attack with the olny objectif being "Survive" x'D
The other pistol got wet as well he probably dried the powder after leaving Edward, but he’s still an idiot for missing an open shot.
I headcanoned Walpole as not actually a master, he just claimed to be one to the templars.
Honestly Duncan Walpole is just another reason, why the Assassins can be just as equally incompetent as some of the Templars. It's honestly a good thing, showing neither side is perfect, even if the Assassins are supposedly the "Good Guys".

I think you should do a video like this with Roshan from Mirage. I know she has a lot more screen time than Duncan but a lot of her backstory is left out of the games and it’s actually pretty interesting.
is it weird that i can kinda see a full on game happening that focuses on Duncan?
i mean yeah he's a scumbag and a disgrace to the brotherhood - but it'd be interesting to see just how stupidely easy it took for him to not only defect to the templars, but to almost single handedly destroy the brotherhood as we know at the time
another vid. another masterpiece.
From the conversation between Edward and Rogers, it also seems Duncan was the type of man to flirt with not just a married woman, but also the wife of a man he intended to work with
Duncan Walpole kind of reminded ME of Mizuki from the Naruto series. A little Weasel Shinobi who wanted to sell his own for selfish reasons. 😜

Not very assassin like
Please make a video about each assassin's Character. And their Descendants.

Black flag is such a wild card in the series
Now that Unity is partly fixed, probably the wildest
Having a heartfelt storyline, nice look at the assasin/templar fight from a bystander perspective, with each side being somewhat sympathetic, great characters, one of the best ship mechanics (after some pirate game I forgot the name of) and bosses, boat hunting and actually good bell diving missions (I love them)...
Even edward was assassinated by a templar, assassin was assassinated, the irony.
You are awesome, and I think it is cool if we can play as both and we need to choose which side we want to be
"He missed the killshot" no no, the plot demands Warpole "misses" and has to die so Edward can take his place.
To be fair, the Colonial assassins probably struggled to get anyone of use, so for whomever they could, trained whomever could handle it, and ranked whomever was at least somewhat competent. The rank of “master” for that brotherhood is probably akin to being a top ranked cop vs a top ranked marine.
The fact that he betrayed the assassins for money is just tragic
eh Shay's turn was more because of stupidity and hot headedness. he only tried once to tell the Assassin's about the danger of the manuscript, and he did so while screaming like a madman and elaborating on nothing. did he calm down and come back later? no. as far as i'm concerned Shay might be a bit more righteous in his turn, but he's dumb as a brick. he had options. chalk it up to bad writing.

He may be bad in many different meanings of the word, but his robes are fantastic! Most underrated in the series in my opinion.
I don't think Duncan is a real master assassin by the way Edward with no training just took him out😂😂

Duncan sounds like Altair at the beginning of AC1, I wonder if Altair could have been manipulated to join the Templars had things played out differently 🤔
Altair was born within the Creed, though. Even if his selfishness and ego rose up, there’s little chance he would join with the Templars outright.

*Edward takes damage from the shot*
There was that Assassin from, Revelations, that also turned Templar as well.
That ending had me rolling
The biggest crime Walpole did is not permanently getting his robes. Edward makes it look good.
Tbf Duncan missing the “kill shot” is understandable guns back then were NOWHERE near as accurate as the game makes them out to be basically it’s like shooting a marble down a smooth steel tube no rifling in the barrel whatsoever
