Very informative and helpful video. I must say however, that the Love You Baby shawl looks absolutely GORGEOUS against your face. The colors really do compliment your skin tone. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this information.

Thank you for sharing such good tips!
Then I choose color order for my several colors projects I usually put good for my skin tone color closer to my face, and crazier colors further away from it (with shawls good to my skin color goes in the middle cause of the way a shawl folds being wrapped around the neck).
Also when I pick muted colors I sometimes put a photo filter on the color wheel picture and pick colors from it - this ensures my colors stay cohesive.

Super helpful! Marling or adding a mohair are a great way to chill down a wild color too!

Good to see you. I just looked at my viens so I am warm. Ha ha. Never knew. I definitely pick colors that compliment my skin tone for sure. I look at flowers and plants sometimes for color combos also I look through desert books as cakes and pastries have great combos as vegetables. I am sure you will definitely get some feedback here for sure. As for variegated yarns I always pair them with a solid as too much varigation doesn't work for me and I never could pull it off. Stay good lady.

Yesss! Pairing speckles with solids -- Another great way to tone them down. And I love the idea of dessert-inspired colorway combos. Now I'm hungry! 😋 Great tips, Anderea! 💖

If I'm trying to choose a colour for an garment I want to knit, or buy, I always try to find a mirror, preferably in daylight, and hold the skein up to my face.
I go with my first reaction, do I like it? Does it make my skin glow? If not, look for something else.
Pretty obvious tip, but a great way to choose.

Fun vlog! And I also have a skein of that Black Elephant Acid Hologram because How Could I Not??? I remember that I tried to talk myself out of it, but it was too good to let go of, despite it being less than practical, or so I feared at the time. My skein was in a sock base, so I have since knit a pair of patterned socks with it, with just the toe in a contrast color (which happens to be your Not A Creature Was Stirring 🤩). And I’ve also used the leftovers for contrast toes in other socks. I actually feel like it mellows out a bit when knit up, and has such depth, but it’s also still incredibly vibrant. I love it!

I’m so lucky that my favorite color looks good with my skin tone and my eyes! I love purple! 💜 But I also have a tendency to squirrel 🐿 and get distracted by pretty colors that look terrible on me but I wear anyway. That skein of acid green yarn would be right at home in my stash!

I always knew I was warm-toned but my feet looked straight-up green yesterday when my veins were visible. Thanks for the advice! You did a great job at articulating things I vaguely knew but couldn’t put into words.

Hello! I love your sense of colour and colour combinations 😍 I have blue veins and tend to suit blue-based reds. I found the part about finding ones eye colour on the colour wheel interesting...but my eyes are brown. Whereabouts on the wheel would I be?

Had to go to the googles to get some answers for this and the colors I see repeated the most are : deep reds/oranges, olive greens, warm leaning golds, lighter purples, deep blue-greens and browns. Based on skin tone AND eye shade you got a lot of wiggle room to experiment with but consensus seems to be that one should go with lighter shades for lighter brown eyes and deeper ones for dark browns. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for explaining the color theory. This video helped a lot😊 I love wild colors sometimes, but they do not always look good against my skin. Sometimes my veins look blue or green depending on the lighting so I have always had a hard time determining it I was warm, cool, or neutral. I LOVED your shawl! Maybe re-knit it in colors that you would wear?

Would you have any advice on patterns for garments for a beginner sewist? You’ve been an inspiration but I lack your condolence. I struggle with cutting pattern pieces out.
    Thanks again Kristin.

I did read somewhere that the green-blue vein thing is not really working for very pale people. And I agree - I'm very pale, and my veins look very blue, just because I have almost no pigment and the veins that are close to my skin. But I definitely have strongly warm undertones, and very yellow-olive skin tone (quite typical for Slavic people). Which is a pain, as most make up foundations that pale are way too pink for me :D

Thanks Kristin! This stuff is really interesting although I must say I've always been confused about the skin undertones thing, at least for my skin. I can only assume I'm neutral, I think leaning more towards cool as I can only get away with a red lip if it is on the bluer side. I can't say there are any other colours that are unflattering on me that I'm aware of. My wedding dress had an ivory under-dress with a bright white hand-knitted gown over the top and I think it suited me and didn't look weird? My daughter's blue eyes absolutely pop when she's in bubblegum pink. She's three so it's easy for her to get away with that shade! Thanks again for the info. I especially found the colour wheel to be interesting and I will look into that further.

You may be like me (I'm accidentally commenting on my bf's account again oh well), you may be cool toned with rose undertones. So you'd respond well to cool-toned colors but not necessarily all of them.

    • @Knitkatpaddywhack

@@butcherball1040 wow that's interesting, I've never heard of rose undertones. So that's different to warm undertones?

Interesting, I never knew about the vein thing....since it is 9:00 at night and we are having a thunderstorm, I'll have to check mine tomorrow. But I tend to wear all colors, except peachy or coral colors. I look horrible in them.....and I don't wear pastels, as I'm young looking and they make me look younger....but I do like strong loud colors...chartreuse and fuchsia are favorites. But I get most compliments when I wear purples.....I was once asked if I only wear loud colors....and I said no, I love a good grey..and when I was a sophomore in HS, I only wore grey...I was into the tweedy look. (I went to HS in the 80's, so I also enjoyed the neon colors too....) Anyway I told the person, that no I don't just wear loud colors, but I'm not afraid of color....color is fun!

Could these also be used with crochet?, on another note in terms of eye color.. what if your eyes change color? my eyes change between green and brown depending on the lighting, my mood and sometimes depending on my makeup or what color clothes I'm wearing. What would you suggest when it comes to that? I am in love with that bright yellow colorway as well, I love mustardy yellows and deep bronzey gold tones :)

Great question, Carly! You could probably get away with any complementary or opposite color between green and brown. Here's another color wheel example that shows additional shades values (images.app.goo.gl/ypAJ3SvQUSzjqjxE9) So anything between violet, blues, and blue-greens should work for you ... and this can work with anything from knitting, crochet, sewing , makeup ... just about anything! 😄

I'm warm toned, but I can wear almost any colour, I've just got to choose a good shade.
Reds; nope; warm toned folks need blue based reds, cool toned; orange/yellow based reds.
Same with lipsticks. I can't tell you how many times I've seen women with the wrong colour red lipstick on...

I'm sorry but I would not consider brown, green or yellow as cool colors, these colors are warm. That is what you are.Blues, blue greens, blue pinks, white are the cool colors, they are what I wear. I am a cool, blond, blue eyes and skin that is almost a white, I am light. No way are you. SORRY< but you are way wrong. By the way, your eyes are more on the brownish green which is a warm color. I have worked with colors for many many years, I do know what I am talking about. I am in my sixties, I have had a lot of training on color. So so Sorry
