Crazy creative, effort. had that been me I'd have slapped some cheap veneer on top, sprayed it with dye and lacquer and been done with it. Admittedly, I might have turned it into firewood from the beginning .... I'm a lazy bugger.
So lovely to find a restoration channel with no music, minimal speeded up footage, and just the sound of birds in the trees for company. Very relaxing, and very nice result.
At first I read that wrong, I thought you wrote “conversation” and actually both could work 😄 it’s already getting late here in Belgium, my eyes are getting tired 😂 But yes true, conservation is appropriate too!
Ok so not my specific style but your creativity made me subscribe!! I am VERY IMPRESSED with your abilities! I am excited to see what you will do next!
Thank you so much-that really means a lot to me! 😊 I’m genuinely grateful that you took a chance on my channel, even if it’s not your usual style. Thanks for subscribing and for your kind words-they truly made my day!
The brush for the gold leaf? Thank you! 😊 I’m so glad you enjoyed the sound of the brush-there’s definitely something calming about it, isn’t there? ❤ It’s one of my favorite parts of the process too!
Wow! very beautiful. This piece reminds me of 1965 when my parents built their new home in Sydney, Australia. They had emigrated from England with two children in 1963, one me aged 6. Cupboards were the same but i remember the hardware was shaped like styalized boomerangs . My then boyfriend and i repainted it in 1973 to modernise... deep purple LOL
Hi from the other side of the world! 😄👋 Thank you so much for sharing that beautiful memory! It’s amazing to think about the journey of these pieces and how they’ve been part of so many lives and stories. That boomerang hardware sounds fantastic-and a deep purple makeover in the 70s? Love it! I can imagine it must have looked so groovy back then! 😊 It’s always special to hear about how these pieces bring back memories. Thank you for watching and taking me down memory lane!
Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words! 😊 I’m thrilled you found it impressive and creative, that truly means a lot to me. Your support keeps me inspired to keep creating!
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I’m so glad you appreciated the restoration and the gold leaf details. It was definitely a nod to its original charm while adding a fresh touch. Your support means a lot!
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the artistic approach, it’s always fun to try something a bit different. I appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts!
I love what you have done to the buffet 😊. I wasn’t so sure how the gold was going to turn out, but it looks great. I would definitely call this a creative piece for sure 😊😊
Thank you so much! 😊 I am really glad you love how it turned out. The gold was definitely a bit of a gamble, but I am thrilled to hear you think it works. I appreciate your kind words about the creativity behind it. Thanks for watching!
You certainly did an excellent job on all the prep work. Well done. To me, it now looks reminiscent of Art Deco style, while at the same time, the design does remind me of my long ago teenage days, of the early 80's. At this moment in time, I'm actually unsure if I like it, however, what is important is that you are happy with it, because it's your work, and it's obvious that you gave it much thought. Looking forward to seeing what else you do.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It’s true that you can’t really put a style or date on the design I guess cause it just came out of my head 😅 and yes I’m happy that it’s getting a new life!
Thank you 🥹 Not going to lie, my patience was tested on this project 😂 but I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a kid, so I guess that’s where the patience comes from ☺️
I see this as a piece of functional art work. In the right setting it will look great. It is not traditional but it carries its age well. You did a great job!
Thank you so much! 😊 I love that you see it as functional artwork, that’s exactly the balance I aim for! It’s definitely a bit unconventional, but I agree that in the right setting, it can really shine. Thanks for the kind words!
I would can call this a creative restoration! haha I know that wasn't one of the options but you restored it and then used a lot of creativity to make it better! I really like it, well done!
Very creative! Turned out amazing! I think I would have stained the bottom insides with an ebony color to camouflage the mold discoloration. And I think I will use your gold leaf idea on a cabinet door in my small bath, but I will use a crane stencil. Really enjoyed watching you work.
Thank you! I did think about staining it darker, but I thought that would have been to different in color, but might have looked good still! Ooh yes a crane stencil sounds like a great idea! Curious to see how that works out!
I guess I'm that one who wasn't thrilled with the turn out. Its not that the design was dated, but I think the design was too '70s. You did a lot of hard work prepping, nice... Sorry to be that one downer. I so applaud the efforts to revive pieces of history, and those who undertake those tasks. Keep on doing what you do.
Hi, thanks so much for your comment! 😊 Everyone has their own tastes, so no worries at all, it’s what makes each piece unique! If we all had the same style, every home would look identical, and where’s the fun in that? 😅 I hadn’t intentionally aimed for a ’70s vibe, but now that you mention it, I can definitely see those lines. I really just let the buffet cabinet guide the design, maybe this is what it wanted to look like! I’m glad to hear you appreciate the effort to revive these pieces. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!
Me too. Lead test the paint Amy needs to add Oxalic Acid generously to the entire surface. Let it dry. Then rinse of and dry again. Not apply a patch, immediately scrub it off. Amy needs to use a container for her hardware. The rust and metal filings will stain her enamel sink and block the drain.
Some people would think you’re crazy. I understand that what looks like a lot of tedious work is relaxing when you enjoy working with your hands and seeing the beautiful finished product. I love working in my yard, flower beds and garden. My neighbors think I’m crazy but it makes me happy and relaxed. It is a lot of tedious work weeding and dead heading and constantly watering in the summer but I absolutely enjoy it. I enjoy getting up all the leaves that fall. I keep my house pretty clean but it’s not something that relaxes me. I’d rather be outside!
Thank you so much for sharing that! 😊 I completely understand where you're coming from, there’s something so rewarding about doing what you love, even if others might think it's a bit crazy. It sounds like your yard and garden are your happy place, just like furniture restoration is for me. It’s not just about the work; it’s about the joy and relaxation it brings. Keep doing what makes you happy, I love your passion for the outdoors!
Trippy! I haven’t seen anyone get this creative with an old piece of furniture in a long time. The design took me back to all the 70s sci-fi I read growing up. We thought that’s what the future of design would look like! Great job.
Wow, thank you! 😊 Greetings all the way to South Carolina from Belgium! I'm happy you enjoyed the video, and it means a lot to have you as a new subscriber. Excited to share more projects with you-thanks for being here!
I have a similar kitchen piece from my grandparents that I use in the garage for storage. These pieces were "factory" painted so the plywood was never meant to be exposed. The plywood is pretty low grade with all the knots etc. So maybe a new veneer could be an option but is pretty expensive for a junk piece and not that easy with the rounded corners. It turned out okay but I like the video more than the end result. If you have the option you should look into better sandpaper like the 3m cubriton line. It speeds sanding up so much that you never want to go back to the diy store stuff. Groetjes.
I agree. The telltale signs of this are the knot holes in the face fronts, no real design aesthetic and cheap quality of wood. It was meant to be painted for utility. Nice job.
Amy i just discovered your channel and watched a couple of your videos. You are also quite courageous to have quit your job to pursue what seems like your passion. You are an amazing artist! I wish you the best of luck and will fillow every one of your videos!
Thank you so much for subscribing, each subscriber brings me just a little closer to my dream! :) It was a big step to quit and I'm still living on my savings at the moment but I have big hope that it will all work out!! Thanks so much for following along and feel free to check out other ways to support my small business in the video description. But no obligations at all, your follow and comment is already massive support for me 🙏🏻
I think creative re-interpretation, particularly liked the different shades of stain, a very unusual piece of furniture, i look forward to seeing more of your videos.
Interesting finish and a lot of hard work removing the paint. I liked the finish, but not so much the gold leaf…it clashed with the silver colored hardware. I subscribed!
Thank you so much for your honest feedback and for subscribing! 😊 I totally understand-finding the right balance with finishes and hardware can be tricky, and I love hearing different perspectives. It means a lot that you appreciated the hard work that went into it. I’m excited to have you here and look forward to sharing more projects with you!
Gorgeous! Oooh! I just saw a woman furniture restorer use Dura Gold Abrasive Cleaning Stick on her sand paper disks and belts. I looked like it was magic. I think she said it gave her sand paper 4 times the use. Worth looking at. I believe Amazon has it. (Like everything else, 😅😅)
Nice work turning a utilitarian piece into a statement! I would ha e never thought of using different stains to tie the defects together. Very creative. May I offer a suggestion? That mold has penetrated the plywood. It may appear dead on the surface but will resurface with time and humidity. If the bottom can't be rep!aced, seal both surfaces with shellac then paint the three cabinet bottoms so they match.
Thank you so much for the kind words and thoughtful feedback! 😊 I’m really glad you noticed the creative approach with the stains, it was a fun challenge to turn the flaws into features. I truly appreciate your suggestion about the mold and sealing with shellac! I’ll definitely keep that in mind for future projects. Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Wow! It looks three-dimensional. This is the first time I've watched your videos. I noticed you are very patient and persistent. You also have pretty hands.
Thank you so much for noticing all the little details! 😊 I’m thrilled you enjoyed the 3D effect! And thank you for the kind words about my hands! I'm so glad you found my channel and hope you’ll enjoy more projects to come!
New subscriber! This is definitely a restoration, and a great labor of love. I would recommend getting a wire wheel instead of soaking hardware and risking staining that beautiful sink with rust! :o) Keep up the good work!
Welcome to the channel! Happy to have you here! That's a great tip! I do need to find a better way to clean my hardware then my kitchen sink... Thanks for the tip :)
First, not the original handles. Did you test for lead? You're a gifted videographer. Very nice visuals. I like the way it turned out. Lots of detail that, I'm sure, took a LOT of time, but it was worth it. Bravo!
Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and kind words! 😊 You’re absolutely right, the handles are not original, but I felt they added a nice touch to the final look. I didn’t test this piece for lead, but I always take precautions when working with older finishes. I’m so glad you enjoyed the visuals, it means a lot to hear that you appreciated the details and the time it took to bring it all together. Thank you again for watching and for your encouragement!
I do love it when the restorer adds stripes of color! (Just a personal thing I appreciate). Wondering why you didn’t replace the board with the mold? Would it have been difficult to do that?
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m so glad you love the stripes of color! As for the board with the mold, replacing it would have meant removing the whole underside of the buffet and taking it completely apart... Sometimes it’s a balance between restoration and replacement, but I really appreciate the question and your curiosity!
Great job, You instilled new life and beauty in a piece of furniture that would probably gone to the trash dump.. In our culture "'U.S.", we have become a throw away society. I remember in high school taking the tubes from my Grandmother's TV and radio down to the local Thrifty's drug store in Glendale California, to test them and buying replacement tubes for he tubes that were bad, to install later in her TV and Radio.
I think it’s not only the U.S. that has become a throw away society! It’s a shame to know we used to replace parts, now you would buy a whole new tv.. thanks for sharing your story! ☺️
My mom and grandmother had the same coffee maker, blender, refrigerator, pots and pans, toaster, for decades. I just bought a new toaster. I could literally smash it with my fist. It’s flimsy plastic. Why buy several of these kinds of unimportant things throughout your life? It’s a waste of time and money. Take any product from the 50s thru the 80s and the quality is far superior to anything you can buy today, and yet the products today cost more!
The only other thing that you could have done was to cover the whole thing in veneer, but I don't know that would have come out better than what you did. I think that it turned out great, congratulations !! 👍👍👍👍
Okay. First. Nice Job getting All that paint "Skin" off. Very Satisfying! Your Prep work is Excellent! I also liked the Kintsugi You did. But the gold leaf didn't work for Me. The piece Really begged to be painted. The old photo showed it painted. It's Very Utilitarian. You could burn the wood like Shou Sugi to highlight the grain and give it some depth. McCluskey Restorations has done a couple pieces that I liked. She has a nice touch. I love watching People from Other Countries restore stuff!
Thank you so much for the detailed feedback, I really appreciate it! 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the paint removal and prep work. I can see where you’re coming from with the gold leaf, it’s always a bit of a creative risk, but I love hearing different perspectives. Burning the wood for that Shou Sugi Ban effect sounds like an amazing idea! I’ll definitely check out McCluskey Restorations, thanks for the recommendation. It’s wonderful to connect with restoration fans from all over the world!
I'm not sure if you know this already, so apologies if you do. But if you have a lot of layers of paint, you can apply the paint stipper and then wrap it in cling film, this will speed up the process and it should penetrate deeper.
Absolutely amazing transformation amazing very skilled vision and artwork and in truth i think it comes together extremely well - however my marginal preference is restoration to what it was including bumps etc
Great job. Looks good. Just to let you know, that type of furniture was meant to be painted due to all the patches and imperfections in the wood. A stained piece would be made from all the same type wood with no knots or blemishes. It's hard to tell what type of wood is under all the paint until you remove it. Again, great job.
So would you call this a restoration or creative re-interpretation? Let me know!
very creative re-interpretation
@@2ndlife.furniture.restoration a beautifully creative reinterpretation. Well done.
Furniture flipping. You're not restoring it to what it was
It is definitely not a restoration. The piece was terrible when you bought it but it was even worse when you finished it.
Crazy creative, effort.
had that been me I'd have slapped some cheap veneer on top, sprayed it with dye and lacquer and been done with it.
Admittedly, I might have turned it into firewood from the beginning .... I'm a lazy bugger.
Wow. I think the kinsugi idea is brilliant. And I love the gold!
Thanks! 😍
Holy smokes….this is actually a work of art. Love it.
Thanks! ☺ That's ver kind!
A sign of an artist, taking a disappointment and making it beautiful. Well done!
Thank you so much 🥰
Watching the paint bubble up is so satisfying 🤩
I know right 🤤
Wow, wow and wow! Awesome job!
Thanks, thanks and thanks! 🤩
You did a great job. Very nice!
Thanks 🥰
So lovely to find a restoration channel with no music, minimal speeded up footage, and just the sound of birds in the trees for company. Very relaxing, and very nice result.
Ooh thank you, that’s so nice of you 😊 Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
You could call this a "conservation" You are conserving its original beauty with your own touch.
At first I read that wrong, I thought you wrote “conversation” and actually both could work 😄 it’s already getting late here in Belgium, my eyes are getting tired 😂 But yes true, conservation is appropriate too!
It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!!
I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thaanks 👍🏻

Great job--it looks fantastic! Worth all the hard work that went into it!
Thank you that's very kind 😊 It was a lot of hard work indeed! But very rewarding!
Fantastic design. I love the painted lines and gold.
Thank you so much 😊
I think you did a fantastic job. Keep it up!
Thanks you ☺️ I’ll do my best to keep it up!
Amazing!! Beautiful interpretation of the whole thing.
Thanks ☺
This is absolutely gorgeous. So creative. You just got a new subscriber.
Oooh that's amazing 😊 Happy to have you as a follower!
I love segmented drawers. So handy!
Me too! I wish I saw more of them in vintage furniture, it's such a rare find.
The furniture as was only fit for firewood After cleaned off and back to wood Beautiful The decor was very tasteful when finished
thank you very much 😊
Appreciate all the work you put into restoring the wood. Love the gold leaf and lines. A nod to what it looked like originally. Perfect.
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I’m so glad you appreciated the restoration and the gold leaf details. It was definitely a nod to its original charm while adding a fresh touch. Your support means a lot!
I would say its both. Beautiful and skillfully done
Thank you so much 🥰
Very interesting approach and artistic, too.
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the artistic approach, it’s always fun to try something a bit different. I appreciate you watching and sharing your thoughts!
It was a pleasure watching your video. What hard work can reveal is amazing. Glad you found this piece and saved it from the landfill. Linda Beals.
Thank you Linda!! ☺️
Excellent job restoring this piece.
thank you :)
Amazing job! That looked like a huge effort but the result is definitely worth it! 👌
It was!! Thank you 😊
Absolutely loved it. Very creative and trendy
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you loved it. I had a lot of fun working on this piece! 😊✨
This is insanely creative ❤
Ooh thanks 😍
I love what you have done to the buffet 😊. I wasn’t so sure how the gold was going to turn out, but it looks great. I would definitely call this a creative piece for sure 😊😊
Thank you so much! 😊 I am really glad you love how it turned out. The gold was definitely a bit of a gamble, but I am thrilled to hear you think it works. I appreciate your kind words about the creativity behind it. Thanks for watching!

Very well done. I like your "creative license" with the gold leaf. It made me smile.
Thank you so much! 😊 I’m glad the gold leaf brought a smile to your face! Thanks for watching!
This is wicked creative! Fantastic job! You must have the patience of a saint.
Thanks! 😊 True, I guess there is a third option!
Hello from Ireland 👋🏻☘️ I’ve never seen such a gorgeous rescue of a piece of furniture ~ it’s just fabulous!
Hello to you in Ireland! 👋🏻☘ That's so kind of you! Glad you enjoyed it ☺
I would say a creative interpretation restoration you combined both a restoration and Kinsugi beautifully :) love it
thank you :)
Absolutely stunning!!! Well done 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thanks you 🥰
You inspire me. I love how it turned out!
Thank you so much :)

Reminds me of printed canvas wall hanging I had in the 70s.
I would have primed and painted to be more like one of the photos, and kept for myself.
So creative!
Thank you!

Trippy! I haven’t seen anyone get this creative with an old piece of furniture in a long time. The design took me back to all the 70s sci-fi I read growing up. We thought that’s what the future of design would look like! Great job.
Thanks! 😊 It does have a 70’s retro vibe, I wasn’t going for that but you’re right!
the paint stripping is so satisfying!
I know right!!
Yes one of my favorite parts!
❤ your filming and your solution to cabinet flaws
Oooh thank you so much 🥰
So enjoyed the video thx
Thank you for watching ☺️

Wow, thank you! 😊 Greetings all the way to South Carolina from Belgium! I'm happy you enjoyed the video, and it means a lot to have you as a new subscriber. Excited to share more projects with you-thanks for being here!
I wonder what it will look like in its next restoration a few years down the road.
Oooh yes true! Maybe someone will make a video with '50 years ago somebody painted these ugly lines on it, let me restore it..." you never know 🤣
I really love how this turned out. The colors and curves look more 70s than 50s to me but overall I think you did great.
Thanks :)
Very nice result

...Nonsense...that OLD rule went away YEARS ago!!!! Women were told to NEVER mix gold with silver jewelry...whoever "THEY" is...was wrong.

Thank you so much! That’s great to hear ☺️
Heel mooi artistiek, love, greetings from Brugge 😉
Dankjewel! 😊 Groetjes terug!
I like the way you did the lines of different shades of stain I'm not a fan of the gold leaf but that is a personal preference all in all great job

Ooh dankjewel ☺️ jaa het kan frustrerend zijn maar als je doorzet komt er toch meestal wel echt iets moois van!
WOW!!!
🤩
I LOVE the lines. The gold leaf not so much. But the lines are amazing!!!
Thanks! 😊 Yes the opinions are divided on the gold!
I’m not a MCM fan but the design on this piece is stunning.
Thanks ☺️
The only other thing that you could have done was to cover the whole thing in veneer, but I don't know that would have come out better than what you did. I think that it turned out great, congratulations !! 👍👍👍👍
Ooh thank you so much 😊
A wonderful transformation.
looks really good. Only, I would have painted the door handles black.
But that's just my opinion.😄
Ooh black! Interesting choice! I didn’t think of that, but I bet that would look very nice!
Okay.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I really appreciate your perspective. 😊
Great job. Looks good. Just to let you know, that type of furniture was meant to be painted due to all the patches and imperfections in the wood. A stained piece would be made from all the same type wood with no knots or blemishes. It's hard to tell what type of wood is under all the paint until you remove it. Again, great job.
Thanks! You’re right! Anyways we can only try to make it the best it van be 😊
Is the pick thing you used to remove paint from a dental set or a clay modelling set because I've been looking for something like that.
It's neither, It's a very old skincare tool I had but I actually just bought these dental tools which are better: amzn.to/42jKHsG
creative re-interpretation. I love it. What's happening to it now?
Thanks!! Now it's going to live a long and happy life in a wonderful new home 😊
Hmmmm. Not sure if I'm a fan of it. Not my style, but definitely unique and makes a very nice statement. Nice use of color's. Well done!
Thank you ☺️
Работа большая. Но, к сожалению, сусальное золото положено не очень аккуратно, что немного портит впечатление.
Restorative Creative Artful Restoration…I hope you signed and dated the back somewhere …
No I didn't! But maybe I should start doing that! Great idea :)
Did you test for leaded paint?
No… but I really have to!! I just wasn’t expecting this, but I will buy a lead test for my next projects.
